I don’t think this is ECU/ECM as from my personal experience bricking a Volvo ECU/ECM trying to modify firmware and flipping pins wrong way around resulted in the entire car being unable to start or maintain running condition. Could be BCM or Body control module has gone bad, I know the wipers are wired to the BCM, not main power for them but the control wires are, as are the hazard lights and headlights and taillights. Only thing odd is DIM or vaguer cluster is entirely offline, that is usually wired right to CEM however I have seen other cars/brands where the network is offline that the gauges use to communicate causing them to basically operate is if unpowered. The good thing about a BCM is usually not performance oriented so on these cars. if it is BCM then can pull a BCM from any volvo of similar age and same chassis type. Downside is BCM is usually locked to VIN numbers so would still need to modify it in software or clone old BCM to new one. I haven’t been following the series, so I don’t know what they did exactly but sounds like may have flipped some wires back to front somewhere when rebuilding something..
@@nilsutt eh, once you actually own it (cause yeah the purchase/registration price will be a lot), its not that bad. A V70R costs 8000 dkk/year in taxes, and then insurance/gas is likely similar to Sweden. So definitely more expensive, but still perfectly doable. I love this series so far! I know it's disheartening to have electronics fail but you completely fixed the smoke problem!!! You have to remember the victories too. Keep at it man I want to see your vision of a fixed V70r.
My 88 year old friend had a battery short out. He didn't know so hooked the battery charger up and fried the calibrator ROM on the old EEC-III on his Lincoln Mark VI. Blew the alternator as well as several fusible links. We are still hunting down problems. Feel your pains!
Also I had those sunroof tubes issues ended up with a lake in my passenger wheel well. I removed the volvo drain tubes and stupid L shape plug and replaced it with a larger longer hose from a hardware store. no more issues. I do check the drain hole at the top where the pipe connects the the pan.
If you haven't, be sure to re-tighten the throttle body after the car's warm (run the car for 20 mins (when it runs properly) then re tighten). After tightening, hit max boost to make sure it won't pop off. I managed to pop the duct off with just a wee bit of boost the day after I replaced the PCV and had to limp home for 30 minutes at 30mph max :D
Your uncle is such a legend. Hope you get the ECU all sorted out soon. I think you should keep peeling the onion on this one, it's definitely worth keeping.
I must admit I wasn’t following this series up until this video. It really caught my eye because when I was 5 or 6 the ABS module in my dad’s 1998 Volvo V70 GLT caught on fire. I don’t remember if it was a faulty module or a leaky master cylinder. I do however remember seeing smoke coming out of the hood and telling my mom about it. After the fire was put out my dad showed my family a very burnt and misshapen ABS module. Good times.
Maybe find someone who has DICE with a laptop. Get a read-out of all the computers. Worked fine for a Volvo of mine. Shows which computers are on the car and the diagnostics.
This comment needs to be at the top, also pretty sure that with an electric throttle body the car needs to idle for 15-20 mins if the battery is disconnected for an extended period of time or it'll run rough.
You need either a brand new CEM, or one known working from a junkyard. Hopefully, your "fixed" CEM didn't permanently damage something else in the process of frying itself.
Keep it going. If it’s gotta come down to it just take it to Volvo and have them diagnose it. I’ve currently got a 2007 Volvo S80 V8 AWD I’m replacing radiator and hoses in, these rare Volvo’s are worth fixing and getting back on the road. Just keep going man, I enjoy all your videos. Love from California.!
This video had a bit of everyone in it, including JR who apparently never sleeps so he can be in 3 places at once! I also can't remember the last time I saw any of my favorite automotive UA-camrs doing any Volvo content, so I'm enjoying watching this (I'm a GM guy, I know jack about Volvo's) - I hope you get this sorted out Elliot, sorry I can't be of ANY help on this to even offer a suggestion other than "you have electrical gremlins" 😅
Had similar issues with my CEM in my V70R (2007). Sent it to Xemodex twice, and it did go back to running ok. The electrical system is so picky in these things. Just before I scrapped mine, the wiring in the engine was shorting, and you can’t buy new wiring for it, but what was the end of the wagon was the angle gear crapping out. I’d recommend dumping yours, or make it a real project and find some other drivetrain to put in it - maybe a Subaru 2.5 turbo?
I've done 3 of those PCV systems all on cars well over 200k. I'm honestly surprised that they didn't sell you that part with the broken pipe in the kit or at least suggest it, because yeah those always break when moved around for that repair. I actually have a 2004 S60 R (autotragic) 265k miles and have never had an issue with the CEM. They're clearly a pretty major electronic component, but typically relatively reliable. Best of luck with the repair these really are great cars when running correctly.
Please don’t give up on it!!! I love these and it’s low key a dream ride of mine. I want to live vicariously through you and see it fixed up!! Not gonna lie it’s the car that had me subscribed to you lol
I've owned two of these cars, they're inexplicably my favorite cars. It's really inspiring to see you work on yours, they're so rare, so please if you have it in you keep it up
Don’t give up on it no matter how bad if you love the car, I have 6 old Mercedes and my 140 needs lots replaced from not having it done before cause the parts were lasting so long for the last guy, it all adds up quick for all them and especially the 140 but I love the car and do what I gotta do, that’s just my opinion but you do as you think best, it’s just satisfying for me to replace and repair a car from the brink of death even if takes a while
Hey dude! I accidentally got to watch your Video today! Interesting channel :) I do work as a Volvo technician here in Sweden, and with that said I have 2 comments two here to say 😃 1. In my whole career as technician I don’t remember that I replaced an ECM in a Volvo not even once. In other words I never experienced an ECM failure. 2. Before you go wild and spend money on expensive repairs always check the wires and the contacts. 90% of the faults are laying there. Good luck
You should see the PCV system on the 3.2 engine. They learned their lesson. Can be changed in minutes. Also, a lot of those DTCs do need to be manually cleared using Vida or code reader compatible with the Volvo digital network.
I'm wondering if something is dodgy with the wiper control line(s), not the power and ground. Perhaps there's a short from +12v to a control wire within the wiper motor unit. The motor unit may still bench test okay as its power and ground is intact, but when connected to the car, the motor unit backfeeds +12v without current limiting to the control output on the CEM. This could certainly fry the wiper driver MOSFETs/transistors, releasing the magic smoke - and they could have failed in such a way that they are preventing the rest of the CEM from powering up properly. This could certainly explain some of the repeated CEM failures- particularly if they just replaced the wiper driver components. A bad wiper motor unit could be killing that part of the CEM every time it's repaired. Maybe it would be worthwhile to check the control pins on the wiper motor for 12v when power and ground is connected on the bench, and perhaps compare that against another wiper motor assembly.
Great video! I checked my '14 Cayman S and I had three center caps that pointed to the valve stem and one that did not. I took two tiny screwdrivers and inserted them into the holes and was able to twist the cap so that it did point to the valve stem. Cool catch! CRC Brakleen is amazing stuff, but wear gloves when you use it. That stuff will literally take the oil right out of your skin, which causes an annoying tingling sensation. And NEVER get it near flame or something hot: It breaks down into a chemical that is highly poisonous...
About that smoking problem. Get your head under the dash and check the wiring. Something may have melted. Also, I would check to make sure each connector is connected to the correct items. I've seen them crossed before on other cars some DIYer that didn't know what they were doing cross plugged things.
argh! so stressful, what a bummer, hope the computer returns and works correctly, but I'd go looking for where that smoke came from in the meantime, hopefully the cluster's not ruined too.
A few years ago, I had a 2007 C70 T5 with a very similar issue. I was on a road trip from NC to CA. After fueling up somewhere in Nevada, the car started doing strange things. First, the engine cut off entirely while I was driving on the highway, lost power steering and all the gauges. I pulled over and tried to restart it, only the wipers turned on without me turning the wiper stock. The cluster lit up like a Christmas tree. Then I unplugged the battery for 5 min, then restarted it, it started, but I couldn't roll down all windows, there were no gauges, and the radio doesn't work either. I drove to San Diego like this then parked it overnight, the next day everything was fine. I used it for the entire trip from CA to WA, then back to NC. On my way back home, the same thing happened again in IL, this time the car simply won't start. Got it towed to a local Volvo dealer, the guy knocked the alternator with a stick, which it worked. After getting back to NC, I replaced the PCV, which it needs replacement before my CA trip, nothing else, and the car became normal again. That was the strangest thing I have ever experienced.
My 09 Rabbit (CBTA 5 cyl) had a similar CECM issue. The problem wasn't the module itself, but the main panel fuse between the module and the battery. I don't know if the Volvo CECM is a fused panel, but check the harness and wiring between the connector for the module and the engine bay fuse box. You might find a fried fuse, bare wires, or some other issue preventing the CECM from powering correctly. Good luck mang!
Man, I thought Tyler had the worst luck in the business. I guess I was wrong! That said, you tend to handle your frustration and disappointment in a much more... sardonic manner. which I appreciate. I'm sure everything will end up ok but please feel free to continue the self-deprecation humor. hits all the right spots lol. best of luck sir... i wanna see this bad lad up to snuff eventually
I seem to have suffered the same CEM failure on my 2003 XC90. The transmission would thump (it is Aisin 5-speed automatic), I'd get a sound like relays clicking, lost most of my electrics and the engine (2.4 litre D5) was still running. There was a "BRAKE FAILURE - STOP SAFELY" and an SRS message on the display before the instrument cluster stopped working. It has been with a local specialist for just over 2 weeks (at the time of writing - 1st November 2022). I'm hoping that they will be able to repair the CEM. $600 seems a bit steep for a CEM repair. I know of another specialist (Volvo Diagnostic in Tilbury, UK) who offers a CEM repair service for £150 (early P2 platform) and £160 (later P2 platform) plus shipping. Even a replacement remanufactured CEM is cheaper at either side of £300 so it probably would've been cheaper to ship your CEM to them in the UK. I know that you've got it all sorted since you uploaded this video. I just wanted to share my own CEM issues.
I wish l still had my 1974 Volvo 142 manual shift. Easy access with no air conditioning, floor mats and radio options at point of sale when new. I bought it without
Got a 2004 S80. Most sensitive electrial electrical system I've ever seen. If you've been changing computers and and the main one does'nt recognise it you may well have to get it reprogrammed. On mine the battery being low gave me erroneous trouble lights. When I got mine, a lot of strange stuff went away as I repaired minor stuff that would appear to be unrelated. You can have two lights that work but are from diffrent companies. The car thinks there's a light out because they read diffrent resistance. It's been a great car, been easy to maintain, but it will throw you for a loop somtimes. I would be tempted to check the ignition switch.
The car almost stalling when you let go of the throttle is probably the TPS. It's located inside the throttle body, is non-serviceable, supposedly non-cleanable, and breaks all the time on these things. There's an updated ETM with a yellow sticker which supposedly fails less but I've had yellow sticker ETM's die in my Volvo all the same. My first one broke shortly after I cleaned it, by the way, so I'm crossing my thumbs yours doesn't mind what you did to it in this video. I talked to a Volvo mechanic about it and he said that the TPS has some oily membrane on it that anything even remotely aggressive will clean right off, and it'll fail after that. Mine was on its last legs when I cleaned it though. I also wouldn't go about replacing the amplifier when you know your CEM has issues, 'cause it feeds power to the stereo. Well, among other things. Check if your heated seats work, and if your 12v accessory outlet works. If those are borked, you've pretty much 100% got a dumpy relay inside the CEM which has to be replaced. I guess that's pretty hard to test now. And get Vida and buy yourself a subscription to Volvo's services so you can flash your own stuff. I never did this, but I also never screwed around with anything that required it. If you're going to keep doing that, you'll save money in the long run.
I had a 2005 s60r with the m66. Had over 200k on it. Even traded a 6 speed saab 9-3 aero for it. The thing ran fine, drove fine, felt great. BUT would eat oil. Got rid of it while it ran but still miss it to this day.
In the video at 13:03 when you turn the ignition on, the dash is lighting up and turning off then lighting up. As soon as I saw that I knew something was wrong with your system. It's likely the CPU wasn't programmed correctly for your year which is why they thought the wiper motors weren't correct. Has the computer been replaced before? Or is that for sure the original? You know the car was running well before, so you have good bones if you will. Work on diagnosing the electrical and you'll have a solid runner. I say keep at it!

I haven’t been following the series, so I don’t know what they did exactly but sounds like may have flipped some wires back to front somewhere when rebuilding something..
meehhhe Of You welp that’s good
Save the bugger. It's probably a simple electrical problem and when identified it will be fine. Then ship it off to me in Denmark.
in Denmark this car would cost an absurd amount to own. creatings from Sweden. All I learned is cars are expensive in DK
(I say this as a student in Denmark with an old 850, so I know what ownership costs haha)
@@xJonathan6405 Nice I also drove a 850 as a student. Have since upgraded to a v70 D5 manual 2013, looking for a C30 T 5 as a seeking car
You should get a Volvo vida dice. It would have told you directly what needs to be replaced and what Dosent. Its a life saver with these P2 volvos
This this this. It’s almost infuriating to watch him ship this stuff put for these prices without scanning it with vida
Elliott, you have to keep throwing money at your Volvo, because it’s UA-cam gold!
Mitchell, as much as my financial sense says otherwise, I think you’re right!
Please don’t give up Elliot! Regretted getting rid of my s40 for a saab so much that i traded it for another s40, dont let this gem slip away!
As much as things sucked for you in this video! You are still the best youtuber in Kansas! Thank you and keep the videos coming!
Can't give up on Spaceball 1 yet!! Especially after all that work cleaning up the PCV system and refrying the computer. Seems to me for $600, they would have sent you a known good computer and not tried to rebuild YOURS. Good luck and make sure to appreciate your Uncle and Jacob (even injured!) !! So cool they help out!
He paid $600 for a repair, not replacement.
@@kraignadjkovic5494 Most places that do this work swap your computer for a known good one, then they repair your old one to "refurb/new" specs so they can send that one to someone else.
Thanks! I’m very thankful for my uncle and Jacob’s help. They are the best!
Oh yikes! Thanks for the tip!
Your uncle is such a legend. Hope you get the ECU all sorted out soon. I think you should keep peeling the onion on this one, it's definitely worth keeping.
Thanks AJ! I appreciate that. I’m just worried about the endless amount of money this car seems to want 😩
@@ElliottAlvis Well ... it IS a Volvo after all. :P Anyways, i can tell you from personal experience that the end result is worth it.
If at first you don’t succeed, try try again! Keep at it man. You’ll get it figured out and it’ll be so rewarding. And entertaining for us 😂
Haha, thanks man.
Good times.
Oh wow!
Let’s hope that’s not the case. But I think you’re right John.
Thanks for the positive vibes Jacob! And thanks for watching!
@@ElliottAlvis anytime man, keep the awesome content coming!
Keep fighting! You´ll get it right!
Thank you!
I hope it gets sorted soon! Really love the Volvo, and I hope it sticks around for quite some time.
I've owned two of these cars, they're inexplicably my favorite cars. It's really inspiring to see you work on yours, they're so rare, so please if you have it in you keep it up
Don’t give up on it no matter how bad if you love the car, I have 6 old Mercedes and my 140 needs lots replaced from not having it done before cause the parts were lasting so long for the last guy, it all adds up quick for all them and especially the 140 but I love the car and do what I gotta do, that’s just my opinion but you do as you think best, it’s just satisfying for me to replace and repair a car from the brink of death even if takes a while
I don't know what's better, the video, or the fact that a "You gotta be kitten me?" shirt exists. My respect for you has increased, sir!
😂😂🐈
Hey dude! I accidentally got to watch your Video today! Interesting channel :)
I do work as a Volvo technician here in Sweden, and with that said I have 2 comments two here to say 😃
1. In my whole career as technician I don’t remember that I replaced an ECM in a Volvo not even once. In other words I never experienced an ECM failure.
2. Before you go wild and spend money on expensive repairs always check the wires and the contacts. 90% of the faults are laying there.
Good luck
Thanks man, I’m on a wire hunt as we speak!
@@ElliottAlvis good luck with that my dude! gonna be looking forward to see the results in the next video 😊
Sounds like a real glowing endorsement of the company that rebuilt that ECU.
I saw an S70R today. I probably wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t watched this series of Volvo videos.
Years ago my 164 caught on fire on the maiden trip home from the dealer sale , rewire was a nightmare. Never right again. I feel your pain.
I know it looks really bad, I know this is horrible, but there is always a path to fixing it. Maybe it takes time, but a car like this is worth it
Thank you! This is the positivity I needed today lol
Great content 🤌🏻 v70 gang
V70 gang!
Yeah, it was an unfortunate thing. I’ll continue trying to track it down.
I’m rooting for you friend!! Can’t wait to see what’s next!!! ❤️❤️
You have to fix it!! It's just such at great car, and I'm sure you'll find the errors eventually. Especially since the engine is in a good state.
@15:36 epic face palm 😂😂😂
Lol trust me… I know. 😂
That is a shame. Hope it will be fixed soon. It will be a great car when done. Just keep reminding your self. Love the cat shirts.
Thanks Deon!
Lol you said open the door , shut and try all the magic . Your uncle disappeared 😮
I hope that your friend Jacob, gets better soon. Very sorry about the outcome of Your Volvo hopefully you get the right Part soon.
I think you need a Volvo Master Tech friend to do a deep dive. It’s not my money but it’s a worthy car to save.
I think I need to get a Volvo tech to make a house call 😂
Lol. Got an ad to become a notary during your video
Haha, that’s great 😂
If this doesn’t scream hoovies hooptie rescue mission I don’t know what does
It pretty much is at this point. Lol
Elliot, I appreciate the little bits of life advice at the start of your videos.
Your handbrake needs adjusting as wall 😂
I don’t doubt it, but it works better than the handbrakes in most of my other cars 😂
2003-2006 Saab 9-3's had the same terrible amp location under the seat. They all end up dying from moisture and corrosion-related moisture. :(.
Keep trying dude, she will be worth it! Sometimes the dealer or specialists are best for these modules
I had a 2005 s60r with the m66. Had over 200k on it. Even traded a 6 speed saab 9-3 aero for it. The thing ran fine, drove fine, felt great. BUT would eat oil. Got rid of it while it ran but still miss it to this day.
Geesh! That’s just not right! Good luck with the new computer. Third time will be the charm!!
You need to get Robert DIY out there to look at your Volvo :P
cool car, It deserves to be perfect
In the video at 13:03 when you turn the ignition on, the dash is lighting up and turning off then lighting up. As soon as I saw that I knew something was wrong with your system. It's likely the CPU wasn't programmed correctly for your year which is why they thought the wiper motors weren't correct. Has the computer been replaced before? Or is that for sure the original?
You know the car was running well before, so you have good bones if you will. Work on diagnosing the electrical and you'll have a solid runner. I say keep at it!
Short in the loom🤔 hens why the wipers didn't work in the first place🤷♂️
14:44 "A wild John Ross has appeared!"
Oh the joys of having computers in your car.
Oh man! What a bummer, that the CEM smoked itself. Hopefully it gets fixed this time. 🙏
The opening comment about high school girlfriends.... wise words indeed. 🤣
We’ve all been there, right? Lol
I’m sure your wife appreciates it, but she’ll appreciate it more if you could please remove your wedding ring while working. Don’t get “falloned” bro. I appreciate your content and don’t wanna read that you’re in the hospital for something avoidable.

The reprogrammed / remanufactured CEM should be fine next time around. Fingers 🤞. Or get a used known working one from a scrapyard parts dealer, that might even have a hood in the same colour too.
