    To you all at Lilium, let me give you another perspective of what your hard work is doing: When the Concorde retired, it was the first time in my life I felt the industry was taking a step back as, contrary to what had happened for decades, decades and decades, there wasn't anything more innovative, more advanced in Aviation to look forward to. This project of yours, as far as I am concerned, has relighted my admiration for the Human Spirit, in what relates to conquering the skies. It might be a small, apparently insignificant endeavor in the grand scheme of the industry but it truly encapsulates the wonderment of amazing things to be. Congratulations to you all and keep up your great work.

      Well said, sir.

      Because all of the aviation advances have been inside the aircraft. Not easy to see, but the advances in technology have continued. Just not as obvious because you can't see it. Cleaner burning ngines 70% quieter, and 30-40% more efficient than a 757! Computers, fly‐by‐wire, flight envelope protections, runway over run protections, curved precision approaches, improved auto land capabilities, longer ranges etc etc etc. The technological advancements in the years since the money-losing Concorde was retired have been just as exciting as the years the Concorde was in service.

    • @MoraqVos
      @MoraqVos 2 роки тому

      The Concorde was a failure from the start: too loud, too ineffecient, too expensive. It only found a second life marketing to the very wealthy, then crashed and burned.
      This project will not revolutionize flight. It will be yet another small private plane destined for a tiny market of rich people. The world really doens't need this.

    • @adamchurvis1
      @adamchurvis1 2 роки тому +1

      @@MoraqVos I hate the fact that the world needs millionaires and especially billionaires to fund their unique forays into the future, but we DO. Such things are beyond the ability of government bureaucracies to even agree on them, much less successfully bring them to fruition, and so uber-rich mavericks like Musk, Bezos, Branson, Allen and the like are needed to "Just go for it" using their own nation-sized bank accounts for financial fuel.
      And you are absolutely right about the Concorde. I used to do some software work for an executive for a massive gold-mining concern, and he would travel back and forth to Europe on the Concorde all the time. He said it was unusually cramped inside and a bit uncomfortable. But don't worry: I immediately called the Red Cross to meet him at Charles de Gaulle Airport so they could fan him down and replenish his champagne.
      Apparently, they got there just in time.

    Impressive looking demo. For those wondering about power requirements, it takes a watt of energy to lift a kilo one metre, so in the absence of any lift from alternative sources, the aircraft will be consuming its’ weight in kilograms, in watts per second, just holding a vertical position clear of the ground. Double that figure for every metre climbed vertically and it soon adds up to a lot! Then there are the losses due to electrical resistance and fan inefficiency, so perhaps add an extra 25%. Horizontal flight with lift provided by the wings reduces the power requirement, but drag forces increase by a factor of four every time the speed doubles. So flight at any speed much over 160 kph will become less efficient due to power requirements due to drag forces overtaking the benefit of lift from the wings. There is a sweet spot where horizontal speed and wing lift are precisely balanced to minimise power requirements. That can be adjusted to some extent by aerodynamic reshaping but the fundamental limit will remain of how much power the batteries can supply to lift the aircraft a given vertical distance for a given period of time.

    There are many benefits of using electric ducted fans; quiet, more efficient, placement over wings adds lift, easier to place multiple smaller fan units than several large engine driven props. I would buy one if able. The large and airy cabin is a bonus. Doesn't look or feel like being stuck in typical fuselage. There is a major move in auto industry towards multiple electric drives, one per wheel. Same benefits as the Lilium.

    What happened to the airflow meter between 0:32 and 1:32 ... for one minute a tenth of knot constant airspeed? Isn't it super critical to have a real airspeed meter that works during the entire time for the flight computer to calculate the manuever? Do you use non redundant hobby grade components? I wonder how it glides with no power. Maybe this eventuality is not considered probable or is designed for. Must be a lot of drag in both vertical and horizontal thrust vector positions. When the thrust vector is set horizontal, the impeded flow through the fan blades would lead to a slow down of airflow over the top of the wing and result in an increased pressure over the wing top-side - not good for lift, or drag. Maybe this is not enough to prevent a useful glide to safety however.

    This should be a hybrid craft. Have an engine driving a generator with batteries only for use in case of engine or generator failure. Just have enough battery power to conduct an emergency landing which is made vertically. A failure when in winged flight and most of the descent would be under winged glide using little to no battery power.
    With windmilling fans excess altitude or speed could be used to add charge to the batteries just as restorative braking works on electric cars.

      The multiple motors are are redundancy.

    • @sthomas6369
      @sthomas6369 2 роки тому +1

      @@skateboardingjesus4006 that doesn't address my point. What if an entire bank of motors fails? How could that happen? Simple, you get a break in the power that supplies electricity to those motors - a broken wire, loose connector, etc. Say that can't happen? then you haven't worked on real life aircraft (speaking from experience as an aerospace engineer & pilot who has maintained real life aircraft).
      Helicopters auto-rotate as a redundancy to maintain flight if there is a loss of power. But there is a zone of performance where auto-rotation is not practical because the lack of horizontal speed and altitude of the helicopter make the physics of auto-rotation not work. If you're in that zone of the performance curve and you lose power, you're gonna crash, period, full stop, there's literally nothing you can do about it. The only way to mitigate that crash is structure (like landing gear or skids on a helicopter) designed to absorb that impact.
      My question is: how does THIS design handle that failure mode, when it's in hovering flight close enough to the ground with insufficient horizontal velocity that the wings won't develop enough useful lift to glide safely to the ground in the event of propulsion failure.
      The answer can't be "the motors are redundant." What if there is a total power failure? (analogous to a fuel powered engine running out of fuel - don't say it can't happen, cuz I guarantee it can) - commercial airliners have had all engines fail when there was supposed to be redundancy, but even they were left with some ability to glide. Let's not even get into the mathematics of the probability of failure of multiple components vs a bank of connected components.

    • @skateboardingjesus4006
      @skateboardingjesus4006 2 роки тому

      @@sthomas6369 I'm referring to each motor being independent of each other, where the loss of a couple can be compensated for. That's assuming they also have physically separate power source connections? If it suffers an event of multiple motor failures, it's screwed. The altitude is laughably too low to transfer vertical momentum to lateral gliding flight during a failure, so it's screwed. I imagine the geometry of the wings trailing edge and motor placement, is to help with laminar flow under powered flight? If so, it's probably not great in glide mode? I also can't imagine it's very efficient either, and battery energy storage capacity, isn't even close to making this have any appreciable range. Certain aeronautical applications of electric propulsion have promise, but not in this configuration.
