Absolute great video on the steps to remove
I’ve got a 72 Super & removing the dash pad was one of my favorite modifications! Thanks Slade!
Thank you for being here! I like that metal look. It just takes me back in time. Plus my wife asked if we could make it look like an earlier model. So she wins!! 😁
Outstanding video. I am confident I can now do this. Thank you sir!
Great Video 👍🏻😊 it's all about knowing what to expect.... Good call on the Old School dash, they're my favorite ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks Leonard!! I like the old school dash!! Thanks for being here!
Excellent job.
Thank you very much, I truly appreciate that.
Awesome work my friend, stay safe
cool project the dash will look old school give it that extra vw charm.
Thanks Dan! I love old school look!
I learned lots of stuff I didn't know with this video. The dash retro look will look great.
Thanks Williams, I just sent you a message on FB today to see how you are. I hope the rest of your week goes great!
Definitely going to do the retro look. Heather had put in her two cents and got her way.
Thank you for your videos
Thank you Oscar, I really appreciate the great comment. Much more to come my friend!
Thanks for the detailed video.
Thank You!
And thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
I definitely like the look of the early dashes. Very informative as usual
Thanks my friend! I truly like that metal vintage look!
man those dashes look so much cleaner without that pad. nice job.
Don’t care for the desk has a whole lot, I don’t hate them, but I like that old metal work.
Worst thing they did was start adding those dash pads. Looks so much better removed.
Hey Hector,
Hope you are well! Now that’s what I call a classic!
The older cars make me smile!!
@@SladesVWBeetle hey, 😂, stay safe
I really needed this training video!! Thank you very much! My uncle passed away and he was in the middle of a restoration on a 1970 bug and i bought it from my aunt and didn’t have a clue about where all these parts go and you have shown me a hell of a lot. Keep up the good work people like me depend on these videos. Ps. I need to work out where all the air plumbing goes. I’ll stay tuned hahahaha
Excellent
Thank you!!
We were lucky here in the UK, beetles retained their metal dashes right up until the late 70s. Another great video as always 👍🏻
Yes you’re absolutely right Ben!!! Over here, they did the dash pad in 68. For safety reasons. I really don’t believe that dash pad is going to keep me safe. 🙄😁
I've watched all your videos and have learned so much! Thank you!! I bought one of your shirts and can't wait to wear it around! You have an amazing skill my friend.
Thank you very much Bob I truly appreciate the kind words. And I truly appreciate you purchasing a shirt.
It’s always a wonderful thing to get the name out there. And I hope my videos are very helpful. I really enjoy helping others!!
again you have made another very good video on a subject i was unfamilar with. keep it up.
Thank you very much Steve, I am glad to have been of help. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment.
Thankyou Mister Slade, Class act all the way!
Thank you Chris, I truly appreciate you taking out the time to leave a pleasant comment. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks for another helpful detailed video. Changing my dashpad tomorrow.
Thank you brother! I hope your dash pad installation went well! Don’t forget to post pics on the group.
Thanks for the video can't wait to see the finished product one day.
Thank you Douglas! Definitely going to take my time and do it properly, I’m excited about the end result to lol
Great job 👍 Wow it's going to look cool going old school with the dash . Have a great rest of your week...
Thanks Eugene! I hope that your week is starting out well, and thank you for being here.
Thanks for making my life easier
And thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
Good video…you did a great job taking that apart. Very thorough and always good tips. I’m learning the hard way about saving screws and bolts
Thanks my friend, I appreciate that. Oh trust me, I’ve had my share of losing nuts and bolts. It’s not fun
@@SladesVWBeetle I worked on this today. Your video helped a lot
Your videos are always helpful. I'm restoring my 72 Super Beetle myself and every so often I use your vids to speed myself along. I'm thinking of removing my dash pad because I like the look and the pad on mine isn't in great shape (good though). My first bug was a 65 and I love the simple German engineering!
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
I think the bare metal dash, gives it that true vintage look from back in the day.
The German engineering, even though approximately 1938 concept was really amazing.
Looking good slades, it’s the small things that cost the most. Thanks for the info keep safe mate
Love the little cartoons and breaks you put n the video. I used to use baggies zip lock kitchen style either snack or sammich size for screws, bolts etc. when I was working on airplanes. I labeled them so I could find where they go. On wires I would use masking tape and put some on the wire and a piece where the wire hooked to and number them with the same number for the wire and connection or a label. I take it VW did not install cigarette lighters in their Bugs / Ghias to go with the ash tray?
Thanks for being here, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I’m not a professional or anything so I just kind of mess around.
That is technically what I do, I use a little sandwich baggies and a sharpie marker. Most of the stuff I can remember, but as I’m getting older, I’m not as sharp as I used to be.
Actually the 73 super beetle that I did in my first series on here had a factory cigarette lighter in it.
Thank you for making these videos they are very detailed, interesting and informative.
I am thinking of buying a 1970 beetle that has the sun roof and it is a project car for the most part so these videos will be very helpful.
Thank you Rob I truly appreciate the kind comment. Just check it over very well, I did a video on what to look for before purchasing one.

Good video
Thank you Randy I truly appreciate that.
Nice video sir Injoy the knowledge you share About the beetle can’t to see more 👍🏻👍🏻take care and stay safe god bless 😀👍🏻
Thank you Antonio! I truly appreciate your being her and God bless you my friend.
You are awesome thank you very much for your knowledge
Thank you my friend for the very kind comment!
Excellent video - hat 25 minutes went by fast!! Good detail and commentary. Keep up the good work....
Thanks my friend, and thanks for always being here.
Pretty Cool Slade, Making that 68 look like a Vintage VW. I never would have thought it possible but that's where your experience glows on this channel. Good job Buddy
Thanks so much Tim, I truly appreciate the kind comments. I have to binge watch, and catch up on all of your videos. I hope you have been doing well.
doing good, yesterday went to a old high school friends celebration of life picnic. one of my friends favorite local bands was playing too. going to things like this is strange trying to recognize folks from high school in the late 60's
@@TimsWorkshopTJY That’s do nice!! I haven’t seen many of my high school friends. But I did run into a childhood friend from grade school. I was so happy to see him!! Oddly enough we knew who each other was.
Another great video Slades. Your glovebox and air intake sure did look easy to remove compared to when I did mine LOL. Glad to finally get caught up on some of your videos.
Thanks Blake! I’m going to do the metal - look, the old-school one. It was fairly easy to get everything apart. I hope that you have been doing well my friend!
@@SladesVWBeetle been doing very well friend. Just been so tired from work working 7:30am to 6pm isn’t fun especially as a mechanic can wear you out but it’s money and I enjoy it just now I’ve got less beetle time.
Good job again, Slade. I couldn't say it better.
It's nice that you have a dash that's never been cut.
Looking forward to seeing how you do the doors off (hopefully with a stubborn bolt)
Truthfully I’m in shocked that the dash pad is in mint condition. It is an original. And nobody hacked the radio slot thankfully.
I’ll be doing the doors next week, and I know dang well, they’re going to give me trouble. 😁
@@SladesVWBeetle well, my father heated them up with a torch back in the days, to lose them up. But I want a clean removal for the oval with no damage. I hope it go’s fine for you, we will see.
@@VWBEETLEOVAL1955 I really don’t like putting heat to them if I don’t have to. Actually I think I’ll go ahead and do that video this week. I use the impact driver, with some PB blast.
@@SladesVWBeetle Pb blast is the same as WD40? I never have seen anything penetrating before losing up. I think I have seen a video on UA-cam about that.
@@VWBEETLEOVAL1955 honestly I don’t use WD-40, that’s more of a lubricant. PB blast actually works very well. I have something even better in the garage, but I can’t remember the name. Mechanic gave me some recently.
I've had my padded dash off so many times but not everything was in place, surprised to see how much there is to remove on a stock one that's not been messed with.
Yes there is quite a few things to remove surprisingly. I like that metal lock, although this dash pad is in mint condition, so it’s tempting to put it back on.
@@SladesVWBeetle mines pretty beat up in places and stained but I think it's the original one, not sure how to tell but that alone is enough for me to fit it.
As usual nicely detailed video. My 71 dash is original. There’s a small check in the glove box corner. I choose to leave it
Haven’t read much good about the replacement dash pads.
Thanks Gordon, and thanks for being here. The aftermarket ones are total crap. At least that’s what I have found out. They do not fit like the original ones unfortunately. If you just have a small imperfection, I would leave it alone to be honest with you.
@@SladesVWBeetle In general I try to keep as many original parts as possible.
Years ago aftermarket parts were pretty good. Now not so much…..
@@gordondonahue4810 you’re so right Gordon. The parts in the late 70s and early 80s were great when I was getting them. Now when we get a part and it works we’re surprised. 🤦🏼♂️ truthfully shouldn’t be that way.
👍😊
👍
If I took a pic with my phone I still wouldn’t know how to put it back, 😂!
Sure you would!! You’re a smart gal!! ❤️
I would of assumed that you would like the dash pad. Nice original glove box. Oh yeah and request time would you have any idea how to set the fuel filler gage because I'm tired of guessing how much gas I have
I’m still up in the air, but I’m leaning towards the old metal Dash look!! I like that vintage style.
I don’t believe there’s any setting on it. It sounds like something went wrong.
A ‘79 mexico haves the same dashboard in metal like yours? Thank you!
Very helpful. How did we manage before phone w/ cameras?
Thank you Kenneth!! I always complain about technology and say things like, “technology ruined everything”!
But I’m the first one to use it. 😁
I have a 1971 super beetle. I would like to put wood contact paper on it make it look like wood. Do u think 🤔 I would have to remove the whole dashboard like so???
Do you have a link to your video that you converted your dash?
Have a 75 super beetle . I want a 67 dash is it possible to swap out.
Nice! Do plan to keep the defroster vents or weld those openings shut?
Thanks my friend, I plan on getting the defroster vent, the center one, from heritage for the earlier models so it sits flush. I’m going to utilize all the vents.
Slade - this video was extremely helpful ! I have a 68 bug that has the padded dash in it. Do you know if that is how the 68s were made (with the padded dash?). I'm not sure what I'll find underneath.
I’m very glad it was helpful. Yes the 68 came with the Dash, that was the first year. They put through regulations for safety reasons. You will find the same thing I did underneath.
@@SladesVWBeetle Thanks Slade ! I will be taking off that padded dash. I am going to be meticulous about notes and pics as I go along so I can get all those wires hooked back up! It seems to get the hood off the car there are bolts on either side to take out . . . ?
Hi, is this applicable to all models from beetle or not please???
Great video… but where is the Super Beetle dash… the one that’s about 8” deep…. This just looks like non-Super Beetle dash.
I did a 73 super beetle the first time around on the channel so you’ll want to scroll back.
Another excellent video Slades. Does a 1968 dash fit into a 1970 VW sedan? If so and you wind up selling this dash please let me know how much you would want. My original 1970 dash was so cracked and I replaced it with an aftermarket dash which hardly fits. Thanks. Keep these videos coming.
Thank you James, I will have to make sure, I know it would fit a 1970, I would just have to check the knob location. This is an original German one. That’s why it fits so nicely. I’m just shocked that it’s in mint condition.
My email is:
sladesbeetle@yahoo.com
@@SladesVWBeetle Thanks for checking Slades, you made it look easy and I know it wasn’t for me. 👍
Is that the original pad you are removing? If so, odd the original owner didn't order the radio!
It appeared to be an original German pad, it just puzzles me that somebody never put a radio in, at all. If it wasn’t original to the car, it was definitely an original German pad though
O- Tay
Great video! I have a '74 standard Beetle and want to get the same metal dash look. Would you happen to know if that's possible by just removing my dash as well? If not, no worries!
It would actually be the same Dash set up. The knobs may look slightly different. I prefer the metal look, it puts me in a mind of her 60s vintage car.
But yes you can absolutely do that. I’ll be removing the dash pad on a 74 beetle within the next 7 to 10 days. It’s the same one that’s on my channel once in a while that I did the disc brake swap on, it’s my buddies. He wants a new dash pad.
@@SladesVWBeetle thanks for the reply! I'll have to look out for that video when it's uploaded!
@@tylersanders6080 Should be within two weeks!!
Do you still have the dash pad ?
Unfortunately Jessica I don’t have it. Somebody on here asked if they could purchase it. Once in a while I do have access to original German ones though. Thank you for being here.
The aftermarket dashboards don't fit well.
You’re so right, the aftermarket ones fit like crap. I kind of had a hunch it was an original Dash, but I was confused because it is in mint condition.
When I pulled it off and flipped it over it’s definitely the original to the car.
@@SladesVWBeetle
Save the original dashboard. Its worth good money, for someone with the same year bug.
@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle Yeah I see the original ones go for some pretty decent cash. I can understand why with the way our aftermarket parts are.
