    Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
    Back in 1975, Beretta introduced a line of mid-size semiauto pistols. The Model 81 was in .32 ACP (intended for the European market) and the Model 84 was chambered for .380 ACP for Americans. These both used double-stack magazines, and single-stack versions followed a few years later (the 82 and 85). Additional models were also available with a variety of safety and control configurations.
    Well, at SHOT Show this year Beretta introduced its reboot of the Cheetah, now called the Model 80X. It now uses an aluminum frame, slim grips, ambi controls that allow carry either cocked-and-locked or decocked, and an optics mounting cut. It is only available in .380, and uses a 13-round magazine. The DA trigger in particular is fantastically good.
    I'm joined today by Matt Haught of Symtac Consulting, who has been shooting Model 81 Berettas for a long time, and who is excited to get a chance to try out the new 80X on the clock. Much to his chagrin, I did manage to beat him - but only by a single point. The match was a lot of fun, and it's hard to complain about a pistol that we were able to take 2nd and 3rd place overall with...
    Disclosure: Beretta did not pay us for this, but did send the gun for free.

    The 80x does NOT have a three-position safety. The fact that it will stick in the halfway position is actually a problem if you're not aware of how the gun operates. Many users have reported the pistol discharging while in what is described by these guys as "cocked and locked" position. To make the gun safe, you must push all the way to the decock position. Somebody didn't read their manual.

    • @Clutch_Kick187
      @Clutch_Kick187 22 дні тому

      They are talking about the trigger returning to a half way forward position after decocking the pistol, which pushes past the fire position and springs back to the fire position, and the trigger moves forward to half way, instead of fully out in the full double action position..

      @@Clutch_Kick187no, they are not, they are talking about that but also about the “3 position safety”, which is a dangerous misconception as the user above commented

    My carry gun is a Beretta 81. Matt is right. The light recoil makes accurate shooting a snap. I think shot placement is everything. I carry it it because I'm 10 for ten when shooting it, versus 8 for ten carrying my compact 9mm.

      @@peewee102100. Since when is 9mm a hard round to handle ? The argument you just made is the exact argument that the fbi made for 9mm. Why stop at 32acp when you could get even less recoil with a .22lr or better yet a .177 cal Daisy BB gun.
      Depending on headshots is not a very good plan either which is why pretty much no reputable defensive firearms trainer would recommend relying on headshots but that’s pretty much what you have to do when carrying something with as little penetrating power as a weapon chambered in .32acp. You can absolutely forget about any form of barrier penetration with the .32acp because a Carhartt jacket is probably enough to slow the 32acp down to a walk.

      @@Gieszkanne .32 isn't dying. It will always have a place in micro-autos because it's available in smaller guns and has less recoil than the mini .380s (which can get pretty nasty).
      Off the top of my head, there are at least four .32s on the current market; the Kel-Tec P32, the Seecamp, the Beretta Tomcat, and the NAA Guardian.
      There are also over 100 years worth of guns that are already floating out there in the hands of gun owners. Any many of these (like the 1903 Colt), are excellent shooters.
      The .32 acp can also be loaded with heavy bullets in the larger steel guns (look up some of the articles written by Ed Harris to find out what it can really do).

    • @joshtiscareno1312
      @joshtiscareno1312 5 місяців тому +1

      The .32acp is a reloader's cartridge. If you reload it yourself, it becomes SUPER cheap because it uses *tiny* amounts of powder and lead. And you don't need to worry about using expensive hollow points because .32acp doesn't go fast enough to reliably expand. Cast lead bullets are cheap and perfectly adequate for .32acp, and they can hit a lot harder than you'd think.

    Not sure if it was mentioned in the comments or maybe i missed it. But you can't carry the 80x cocked and locked. That semi-locked position that is sometimes thought of as locked isn't in fact locked, If you pull the trigger enough or put side pressure on the pull, it will in fact fire. And beretta does include this in their manual. In my experience, the more you shoot it, the less it will in fact stop in that half locked, or safety position. But again, maybe I missed something or am mistaken on what was said at around 3 minutes in.

    You have me hunting down the 380 80x. Ian mentioned the similarly sized CZ 82 which is also double action. In addition, there is also the Browning BDA. If I remember correctly, the BDA almost a copy of the Beretta 82 Cheeta with a closed top slide. I regrett selling my BDA and my CZ 82 was stolen and never recovered : (

    I have a CZ 82 that has a fantastic DA/SA trigger. but the grips are too thick for me to carry it. If Lok Grips would make some slim grips for it like they do for my Beretta 81, I'd carry it too.

      @@mrb692 I don't think so. Ian and a lot of others compared its recoil to 9mm and low recoil is a big draw for .32 ACP.
