    Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
The Type 94 Nambu pistol is best known for the exposed sear that allows it to be fired by pressing on the side of the gun. This is actually not really the safety issue it's usually made out to be, but that's a point for another video. Today, I took a Type 94 to my local Backup Gun Match. This match has stages intended for limited capacity, close range guns, and is a great chance to do some quasi-practical shooting with guns like this one.
Unfortunately, the Precision Cartridge ammunition I used for this match was inconsistent and underpowered, leading to several malfunctions (I should have made a point to get Steinel 8mm Nambu...). Other than that, the gun was very nice to shoot - it has a good trigger, small sights, and is much more comfortable to handle than it looks like it would be. It is also a more durable gun than the much nicer-looking Type 14 Nambu, and it's smaller size made it more convenient for the pilots, tank crews, and others who carried it. I chose to shoot the match with an issued katana as well, which forced me to shoot one-handed...

Yeah, 2/3-gun matches are very competitive but I think some of the best fun you can have with firearms ownership is putting yourself in these kinds of events with a "theme" or otherwise handicap for the fun of it. Shooting a C&R gun at a range is great, but it's at a match like this that you really get to experience the handling of the gun.

Two world wars dented their reputation, but there was once a time that if you wanted to modernise your armed forces , you'd ask the French to send you military advisors to do so. When Japan decided to modernise, it used a French model for its army (what is a banzai charge but Attaque à outrance) , the British for its navy and the Prussians for its police.

Yeah, that PCI stuff can be really all over the place. I've actually only ever fired my dad's Type 14 once (as in one round), because something, be it the cartridge or something else, snapped the extractor clean off. He's long since had it repaired and even gotten a Type 94 as well, but he's been too nervous about breaking something to fire either of them. Might have to look into this Steinel stuff so that he can actually even get to shoot the things once.

    • @nolanolivier6791

@@clothar23 Shin Guntos aren't typically actually katana. They were manufactured on inductrial scale using modern methods. They are nowhere near as expensive as even a new shinken, the price has gone up a bit but they're still pretty easy to find. The myth that japanese families were having heirlooms refitted in IJA marked furniture is in most cases just that - a myth. Frankly, a type 99 with an unmolested crystanthemum is harder to source. Also, given the methods used to produce them, it's not as if they're fantastically sharp (or sturdy).
