I know this is a nitpick, But if you thought a spoiled, obnoxious rich kid with super rich friends and a super model girlfriend was supposed to be even remotely relatable, then I think you've misinterpreted the purpose of his character. Especially since his character development has him slowly devolve into a mass murdering sociopath
Exactly what I was thinking.I also can't imagine how they thought the good ending is Jason going back to his rich kid life in South California now that he loves murder and explosions. He couldn't adapt anymore now that all of his talk topics are about that one time he killed 20 people and 6 dogs to give an outpost to a group of island savages who don't even have footwear and are drugged out of their minds.
I related to him more like a adventurous slacker who does not know who he is but has to awaken the warrior within to rescue his friends and family form a dangerous psychopath but when he has to do even more dark shit he becomes dissolution with the warrior lifestyle but in the end he finds out that deep down he is better then that.
Mansen He's supposed to be a really nice guy in real life too! My friend who works for Eurogamer has met him a couple of times and he said he's quite a laugh to be with! :)

The way Vaas is approached and handled, he easily comes across as being the main antagonist of the story and presumably will end up being the "final boss" of the game. The whole act of killing him off at that point came across as a rushed decision or someone from upper management wanting something, because everything there after was far weaker than what had been done up to that point.

This review definitely convinced me to give this game fourth shot. I'm one of those guys who never made it to the second island lol. You mentioned that the second half is a bit limp, but the missions in the first half were at times very tedious, à la GTA V, though that pot field mission is fucking incredible. The best times to be had in Far Cry 3 are taking over outposts or driving around the island and stumbling into shit, in my opinion.

Far Cry 3 is a timeless masterpiece. On its surface it’s another rescue FPS. But once you start playing, you start going down the same rabbit hole Jason falls into. In the time I’ve played it, I’ve noticed there other important themes: Insanity, addiction, and manipulation. As it was portrayed in Alice in Wonderland, everything was mad, or irrational, even Alice. Both Jason and Alice deny those however and both begin to indulge in the fact they’re the only ones who are in control of their environment. Jason does this by capturing outposts, killing pirates, and taking drugs. Which leads to the theme of addiction. Far Cry 3 is a game self aware, meant to draw in the player. The Rook Islands are said to be a place where you can do anything, much like a video game world. Buck even says, “I’m not playing the bloody game, you are. I’m just a spectator.” Under the influence of drugs, killing, and rituals, he seemingly becomes stronger, and thus becomes addicted to his role as savior of the islands. Of course, he was also easy for Citra and the Rakyat to manipulate. Dennis tells Jason he is special because he was given the Tatau. Citra lures Jason into the promise of power and glory for exacting his revenge of Vaas, and killing Hoyt in the name of the Rakyat. By the end of it all, Jason has become the perfect killing machine, just as Citra and the Rakyat intended. Thus you are left with a choice; save your friends, leave the island, and return to society from whence you came, or kill your friends (cutting you off from the last remnants of society), stay with Citra and let the insanity of the islands consume you entirely. Vaas said to Jason that insanity was doing the exact same thing over and over expecting things to be different. This is exactly what Jason was doing when he decided to continue his killing spree. But by the end of it all, things were barely any different. These make Far Cry 3 in my opinion one of the greatest video games of all time. In short: it’s like watching a movie written by Stanley Kubrick and directed by Michael Bay, and it didn’t suck.
Ubisoft: Do you know the very definition of insanity? Is to do the same thing over and over again expecting the same result. Also Ubisoft: Makes basically the same game over and over again.
I got into this game when the commercials came out for Far Cry 4 on the telly. It looked fun but I knew better to just get the last game to see if I liked it at a reduced cost. ^_^ Great review by the way.
Hey gman, loved the review! I've been following your Far Cry series reviews and they are awesome. I just have a suggestion for a correction however, I believe it runs on the Dunia engine not the "Junia" engine. It could be an accent thing though :P.
+civilwarfare101 Awful? Far Cry 3, The Walking Dead, Dishonored, Sleeping Dogs, XCOM, Spec Ops: The Line, Max Payne 3, Borderlands 2. That really doesn't seem like a bad year.
Max Payne I mentioned FC3 in the beginning post. Most of those games are overrated especially Dishonored. I am not forgetting awful games like Resident Evil 6, Ninja Gaiden 3, Hitman Absolution, Silent Hill Downpour, Assassin's Creed 3.
I was watching "Better Call Saul" the other day and saw this actor that I couldn't place. It wasn't until about halfway through the first episode that I realized "Hey! That's fucking Vaas!". It's that voice man, it's very recognizable.
Vaas was the best thing in the series. FC2 is the best mercenary sim out there, and was the most realistic. FC1 was one of xbox's best titles. FC 3 is good fun, but is very video-gamey. It's worst offense was that outposts and their patrols were permanently destroyed, meaning that the once alive feeling island is never dangerous after the first visit. FC2 didn't need any more check points because of its modest size. I play without them, and only a few minutes are added to a mission. FC2 doesn't get the love from players it deserves.
GGG have you ever played "The Thing" game ? what do you think about it ?(from what i read from the wiki, The game seems to be set as a Sequel and endorsed by John Carpenter himself)
+Uber Tiga Yes it was a bit of an underrated gem. But it had one massive flaw where enemies would show up as uninfected on blood tests, then turn into monsters 5 minutes later.
I just started a new run of this after discovering my long ago in progress second run was lost when I had to reset my PS3 to factory default a few years ago. (My Internet connection went down during a system update) I'm glad they removed weapon degradation and jamming because Far Cry 2 was one of those games where the gun jam rate was so absurdly high that games where the guns never jam are actually more realistic. I hate how easy it is to take fall damage. I swear sometimes it feels like falling off my kitchen table would be enough to knock Jason down a health bar section or more.
It actually does make sense if you miss a shot and they know where you are. Play a pvp multiplayer game. One of the best ways to find someone hiding is to bait them to shoot at you so you can locate their position
That guy playing Vaas is awesome in better call saul as well. And was one of the only highlights of that silly clones show orphan black or whatever it's called
Played Far Cry 1 in 2006. I still remember most of the names of the people in it: Jack Carver, Doyle, Valerie, Krieger. I still remember each of the fantastically designed levels by heart. Played Far Cry 3 in early 2015 for 50 hours (according to Steam). Had a lot of fun. Don't remember a thing though.
and the lack of healing without syringes and the(good) fire system. and the insane difficulty modes. And even the malaria... Vehicles breaking down before exciting chases occur were a bit of a buzzkill though. Also why couldnt we shoot and drive until far cry 4?
Fa Kenews but master mode is definitely in the same vein of difficulty as 2. Just not quite as difficult, but hard enough you have to change your playstyle.
Taking it slow and stealthy and playing smart seemed like a good idea for Far Cry 4, but I found out it was pretty easy to just cheese my way through it. Is the AI and stealth systems better in this one or just as easy to cheese through?
so i'm thinking of picking this up now that it's on sale (8 bucks or so on steam) problem is,the notes say i still need to use / install uplay somehow ? honestly, fuck that so..does anybody know exactly how that works ? cheers
I never said the buddy system was "awful" in Far Cry 2. Nor did I say it's a "bad thing it's gone". The only thing "nice" here is you pulling words out of your ass to make up an argument. Mate.
u put the comment that theres no buddys in your negative section of the review, mate. you also said that the buddy system was useless and makes the missions last much longer. Just face facts mate you stupid kangeroo
I also don't like when you miss a shot it gives enemies kordinates to youre location. but i have read somewhere that ubisoft did this just so that stealth weapons aren't too OP!
Hey, gggman! I would encourage you to check out the doom mod Skulldash! It's a really cool arcade style WAD I came across that has some really cool twists on Doom gameplay. I beat the whole thing and had a blast, I bet you'd like it too!
Absolutely love Far Cry 3 and watching this made me want to play it again for like the 8th time. Vaas is just one of the most amazingly well done characters that I think exists, though he is killed WAAY too early and frankly the weird boss fight didn't feel right. The vicious stabbing is dank though
It's linked to finding collectables. For every type of collectable. There is a "special" weapon that is linked to them. Just look in the notebook and on the bottom, there is a lost of showing what every image on the Notebook list means. If you look for 9 Letters of the Lost, you will be rewarded with a Japanese knife to replace your machete. If you Complete every "Trial of the Raykat" on the first half of the Rook Islands, you will unlock a special LMG. If you clear about half of the outposts you will get a special "SMG." In order to get the "Bull" Shotgun, is to find 10 Relics. If you save up some cash you can purchase maps for loot in the store. It's near the bottom of the list. If you find 40-60 Relics you get recipes to make invincibility and one hit kill drugs for you to use. I generally used the Invincibility to jump off cliffs when I would flank outposts.
This was my favorite FC so far, the gunplay and maps were se enjoyable. And yeah, the "stealth" system was so refined, that you can take over an outpost using an RPG without being detected. Seriously, and its far more effective.
I've only played 2 and 3 but I gather from every Far Cry game they take core gameplay differently. 2 had you pulling up a map every 20 seconds with bizarre gps accuracy but its a fun game. 3 had an excellent narrative behind all the superb gameplay. Primal hasn't appealed to me but seems like an alright idea.
I can see why people don't like the story, but for me, I loved it. I guess it has to do with how much you immerse yourself in the environment and the progression, and the playstyle you want to take it.
I really prefer the story in Far Cry 2 over Far Cry 3 or 4 because it's so minimal, yet good as it's almost a Heart of Darkness adaptation. Most of the time you just go, and shoot. That's one of my main gripes with most FPS's these days, as the story feels really tacked on and you dont get invested in it like in classics such as Deus Ex or Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay because it really fucks with the pacing. That's why i really enjoy the Borderlands series, even though people hate the writing (cuck Burch), there's almost no custcenes and everything apart from shooting can be pretty much skipped or is as short as possible. Also, please review Chronicles of Riddick - Escape From Butcher bay, it's a masterpiece.
FC2 has awesome story imo. When jackal asks us what has happened in this country because of us in the last mission; we soon realise that it is us who have destroyed almost everything in the UAC. Think about it. If we had killed jackal, surely some other weapons dealer would have surfaced within a year and do the same things jackal had done. I felt like I was the bad guy and he was good considering i sent him to blow the mountain full of charges and allowing ppl to escape.
Good review my only gripes with the game and many people seem to disagree as they hated this is Far cry 2. The game got so boring once you take over all the outpost, I loved at the beginning where you'd be doing a mission to just running around and a enemy patrol would drive past or walk past. this stops once outpost are defeated and makes the game boring, also they should have limited how quickly you can take over radio towers, I did like 3 missions then spent the next couple hours just unlocking towers because I wanted weapons, before a quarter of the game was completed I already had all weapons on Island 1 also farcry 2 had a better weapons system, side arms, main and a special weapon, I felt way OP carrying 4 primary weapons, why have pistols if I could carry 4 rifles or machine guns. and last gripe was the repair tool took up a weapons slot, nothing sucked worse in the game than being stranded with a broken car out in never land with no outpost insight and you have to run for 30 mins. otherwise great game
Ted E Bear You mean the three second animation that happens once every few hours? I still don't get why people hate that so much. If your any good at the game you won't be caught in the open stroking out from malaria, and you won't be jamming your weapons so much. It seems to just be a case of "get good, or go home."
Liam Harris Jamming never bothered me it only happened when you picked up weapons off the ground. The pills were annoying esp when you always strategically run out, it had nothing to do with skill, it was an annoying mechanic which didn't add anything to the game.
Ted E Bear I suppose that the enjoyment of the game was more a matter of perspective than anything else. People were too suprised by such invasive mechanics, while others saw them as reasons to shoot up another base.
I loved vaas and I didn't mind that he died too early, i think they didnt overuse his character which made his moments much more memorable, it felt like a arc ending
One of the most special games I've ever played. Besides Crysis 2, Dead Space 1 & 2, FarCry 2, Bioshock and Dying Light. I hope they'll convert the PC version in an improved and extended version for the Xbox Scorpio. I'd love that a lot. Fans want more Vaas.

Well hopefully he takes his skills to the military or contracting work. That way he hopefully mitigates collateral damage in the future.
He was relatable in a sense that he’s still a normal person without combat training in a fucked up situation and somehow overcoming it
I related to him more like a adventurous slacker who does not know who he is but has to awaken the warrior within to rescue his friends and family form a dangerous psychopath but when he has to do even more dark shit he becomes dissolution with the warrior lifestyle but in the end he finds out that deep down he is better then that.

Also, Vaas dies WAY too early in the story and his South African replacement is a poor imitation.

+Larry Bundy Jr I would genuinely like to know the creative decision behind that, because it strikes me as very bizarre.

Maybe they thought the story was too short and tacked on the second part, or maybe (and knowing Ubisoft more likely) it was meant to be sold as DLC originally, but they knew they'd get a lot of bad press for it as it is the second half of the game.

I actually enjoyed all the hundreds of collectibles especially the Japanese letters. They gave you a kind of narrative on what happened in the island earlier. But they could have done so much more with the letters like developing a dedicated quest chain that allows you explore more on the Japanese experiments, just seem like a missed opportunity. Everything else in this game i loved. This was the perfect FPS for me.

It actually does make sense if you miss a shot and they know where you are. Play a pvp multiplayer game. One of the best ways to find someone hiding is to bait them to shoot at you so you can locate their position
Great review man. What part of Australia do you live in?
This is the game that started all the xp system, skill point, checklist filling open world games coming out non stop
he said far cry 3 was released in 2002
You just reminded me how much I loved this game when it came out. I think I'm gonna reinstall it.
I loved this game, I even liked the story. Jason actually evolved as a character.
It's sort of explained in the collectables and notes that Rook Island had some strange effect of turning people insane over time.
looks great for 2002
it came out in 2012
PureDragonn, it's sarcasm.
YES! Your reviewing my favourite game in the series.
Far Cry 3 came out in 2012 messed up little bit but great video loved this game
Great review GGG, as usual =D.
is mistating the release date a new thing for you similar to your iconic "sunny jim"?
+Nutritious Bag Circles No it was a fuck up.
I missed weapon jamming :/
+Kis Kacor And the buddies...
and the lack of healing without syringes
and the(good) fire system.
and the insane difficulty modes.
The only real problem with this game is when you take out all the outposts there are no more bad guys to shoot, they fixed that in later games though
anyone else notice the black border around every character you see in cutscenes and in gameplay?
I never knew you could fast travel but now it makes sense
Taking it slow and stealthy and playing smart seemed like a good idea for Far Cry 4, but I found out it was pretty easy to just cheese my way through it. Is the AI and stealth systems better in this one or just as easy to cheese through?
The Avid Gamer Thanks.
I think that you get to second island in last 1/3 of the game, not half. So you get that wingsuit quite late in the game.
+Gggmanlives are you going to review far cry blood dragon ???
Top notch sound design for the weapons in this game.
Not too shabby.
so i'm thinking of picking this up now that it's on sale (8 bucks or so on steam)
problem is,the notes say i still need to use / install uplay somehow ?
honestly, fuck that so..does anybody know exactly how that works ? cheers
good review, hey, you should totally check out the splinter cell series :)
do you plan on doing a review on borderlands 2
love how he says the buddy system is awful in far cry 2 but then says its abad thing its gone. Real nice mate
@@Gggmanlives ur just a below average reviewer whos only popular because you have that bogan aussie accent.
and when I say popular, ur not really cause most people can see through ur shit reviews
I also don't like when you miss a shot it gives enemies kordinates to youre location. but i have read somewhere that ubisoft did this just so that stealth weapons aren't too OP!
Love this game. Enjoyed it more then 4. Needed to mention the outstanding sound track
Can you do Hard Reset next?
how did you get your game to run so smoothly?
Hey, gggman! I would encourage you to check out the doom mod Skulldash! It's a really cool arcade style WAD I came across that has some really cool twists on Doom gameplay. I beat the whole thing and had a blast, I bet you'd like it too!
1:04 Far Cry 3 was released in 2012 not 2002.
+Neurotic Wolf Yes I know that.
Gggmanlives its cool, everyone makes mistakes
Absolutely love Far Cry 3 and watching this made me want to play it again for like the 8th time. Vaas is just one of the most amazingly well done characters that I think exists, though he is killed WAAY too early and frankly the weird boss fight didn't feel right. The vicious stabbing is dank though
Cool review, keep it up! ^^
Also where did you get the bull shotgun
It's linked to finding collectables.
For every type of collectable. There is a "special" weapon that is linked to them. Just look in the notebook and on the bottom, there is a lost of showing what every image on the Notebook list means.
If you look for 9 Letters of the Lost, you will be rewarded with a Japanese knife to replace your machete. If you Complete every "Trial of the Raykat" on the first half of the Rook Islands, you will unlock a special LMG. If you clear about half of the outposts you will get a special "SMG."
In order to get the "Bull" Shotgun, is to find 10 Relics.
If you save up some cash you can purchase maps for loot in the store. It's near the bottom of the list.
If you find 40-60 Relics you get recipes to make invincibility and one hit kill drugs for you to use. I generally used the Invincibility to jump off cliffs when I would flank outposts.
Thanks.
This was my favorite FC so far, the gunplay and maps were se enjoyable.
And yeah, the "stealth" system was so refined, that you can take over an outpost using an RPG without being detected. Seriously, and its far more effective.
Far cry 3 was released in 2002???
I've only played 2 and 3 but I gather from every Far Cry game they take core gameplay differently. 2 had you pulling up a map every 20 seconds with bizarre gps accuracy but its a fun game. 3 had an excellent narrative behind all the superb gameplay. Primal hasn't appealed to me but seems like an alright idea.
forgot to mention the co op and multiplayer part
Is it weird that I love Escape From Butcher Bay, but still think Far Cry 2 is absolute shit compared to Far Cry 1 and 3?
FC2 has awesome story imo.
When jackal asks us what has happened in this country because of us in the last mission; we soon realise that it is us who have destroyed almost everything in the UAC. Think about it. If we had killed jackal, surely some other weapons dealer would have surfaced within a year and do the same things jackal had done.
I felt like I was the bad guy and he was good considering i sent him to blow the mountain full of charges and allowing ppl to escape.
Gman you might want to put a annotation in the video so people stop mentioning 2002 lol
+Jman Rising There is an annotation.
+Gggmanlives Sorry Gman I must not have seen it because of my phone. I wouldn't be surprised if people ignored it to correct you anyways though lol
Good review my only gripes with the game and many people seem to disagree as they hated this is Far cry 2.
The game got so boring once you take over all the outpost, I loved at the beginning where you'd be doing a mission to just running around and a enemy patrol would drive past or walk past.
this stops once outpost are defeated and makes the game boring, also they should have limited how quickly you can take over radio towers, I did like 3 missions then spent the next couple hours just unlocking towers because I wanted weapons, before a quarter of the game was completed I already had all weapons on Island 1
also farcry 2 had a better weapons system, side arms, main and a special weapon, I felt way OP carrying 4 primary weapons, why have pistols if I could carry 4 rifles or machine guns.
and last gripe was the repair tool took up a weapons slot, nothing sucked worse in the game than being stranded with a broken car out in never land with no outpost insight and you have to run for 30 mins.
otherwise great game
FC2 was so good. FC3 was more casual. Typical Ubisoft n
Liam Harris if far cry 2 didn't have malerria I'd still be playing it
Ted E Bear You mean the three second animation that happens once every few hours?
I dunno, I always really liked Hoyt. Second island is great challenge. But I have to say, story missions gameplaywise start to fall apart there.
I loved vaas and I didn't mind that he died too early, i think they didnt overuse his character which made his moments much more memorable, it felt like a arc ending
2002?
1:03 ...... ummm not 2002 .... 2012 it was released.
+callum micallef It's 2020
damn how long has this game been out?
Since 2012
+SHAWKLAN 27 I know
dat Skrillex *WUB WUB* song always gets me
One of the most special games I've ever played. Besides Crysis 2, Dead Space 1 & 2, FarCry 2, Bioshock and Dying Light.
I hope they'll convert the PC version in an improved and extended version for the Xbox Scorpio. I'd love that a lot.
Fans want more Vaas.
