    Far Cry 2 is an open world first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released on October 21, 2008 in North America, October 23, 2008 in Australia, and October 24, 2008 in Europe. It was made available on Steam on October 22, 2008. Crytek, the developers of the original game, were not involved in the development of Far Cry 2. It is the second installment of the main Far Cry series; the sequels Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 were released in 2012 and 2014, respectively.
    Ubisoft has marketed Far Cry 2 as the true sequel to Far Cry, however the sequel has very few noticeable similarities to the original game. Instead, it features completely new characters and setting, as well as a new style of gameplay that allows the player greater freedom to explore different African landscapes such as deserts, jungles, and savannas. The game takes place in a modern-day Central African nation during civil war. The player takes control of a mercenary on a lengthy journey to locate and assassinate "The Jackal", a notorious gun runner. As of January 23, 2009, the game has sold 2.9 million copies.

    Far Cry 2 is one of the few mercenary orientated games out there and the slow-paced storyline and action allows players to appreciate how alive they are in an war-torn African country, that is, until the darn Malaria kicks in.

      @@rambo-cambo3581 always? It feels to me that later Far Cry games are not about mercenary but freedom fighters. FC3 has a survivor liberating the islands off pirates, FC4 and FC6 has you become a freedom fighter againts oppressive regime, FC5 has you working for the US marshals.
      In fact, the only mercenary themed Far Cry is Far Cry 2. Where your whole purpose in that country is to make money off whoever it is willing to pay you. There is no noble just cause, just diamonds.

    The most amazing driving experience I've ever had in a game was one I had in Far Cry 2. I was driving to the next mission when I suddenly heard the loud engine revving of an enemy technical that had spawned on the road behind me and caught up to me. I started taking some evasive turns, but instead of seeing machine gun bullets flying around, I instead saw trees and stuff exploding around me. The technical that was chasing me had a mounted grenade launcher, aww jeez. I took a hard turn into the jungle, but the thing about FC2 is that the jungle is so thick that you can't really drive through it, you'll get stuck. But the road through the jungle was perfect because it was narrow, twisting, and hemmed in on both sides by trees that gave me cover whenever I was able to get them between me and the chasing truck. I must have weaved through this narrow road for 30 straight seconds while grenades exploded everywhere, until I was able to do a tight turn around an obstacle in the middle of the road that my pursuer hit and was stopped on. When I noticed that I wasn't being chased anymore I stopped, snuck back, killed the men, and took their truck.

    I like how Farcry 2 felt oppressive, that weapons actually could be jammed or so shit they'd explode mid combat. It added to the chaos and made it more wildly different, helped by requiring you actually hold up a map when using it vs just a minimap. Felt more like an adventure vs the latest ones that are so by the numbers and boring.

    As dumb as it might sound but it is one of my favorite Hardcore FPS games. This game doesn't really take your hand and wants to see you dead. The furious and realistic enemy AI is amazing. The graphics, environment, level interaction unmatched. The location (Africa) is also very unique. The driving isn't even that much of a chore to me. I don't need fast traveling. And most of the time, using the bus is fine. I like seeing the world and hunt for diamonds. The whole gameplay is just so hardcore and raw and there isn't even a real HUD. I am always able to dive really deep into this world. The music and sound is amazing too.
    The only thing that is a bit annoying is the guard and patrol respawns... They are really a chore and destroy most of the nice traveling because all 1-2 mins you either meet a guard post or a patrol and have them chasing you to death while your car gets broken and you cant drive anymore. I mean the mechanic can be cool, but the way how it is implemented is really annoying. Got used to it though. Still, doesn't mean the problem is fixed.
    I don't find the missions or story that bad. I kind of like its raw approach. But yeah, the missions can get a bit repetitive sometimes.
    I like this game more than the other FC games. I wish they would make a remaster of this game with adding some of FC3s features such as wild life, no guardpost respawn, less patrols. But lets face it, I don't see this happening. Ubisoft would rather make a new game like FC6 set in Africa again, maybe with trying to put some of FC2 aspects back in the game like weapon jamming and such.

      Disabling outpost respawn makes no sense to me. Player doesn't belong to any faction, so he can't claim these outposts cleared or for ally faction.
      Prolonging the respawn though - that would be nice. Wish Ubisoft weren't a bunch of old potatoes and made SDK for FC2. There probably would be a mod by this time that adds shifts to outposts that change during the day via trucks or some sort

    This game, while frustrating, is in my opinion one of the best in the series. This took a much more realistic approach to the game, and the new ones are just so different. The way you heal is much more realistic. You have a lot of healing items, but as soon as those run out, you dig out bullets or glass shards as a last resort. In the new ones, you just repeatedly re-bandage the same wound or dig out the same bullet. While in this game, you have to get into cover, and make sure you aren't hunted.The gun jamming was also a good feature I don't see in a lot of games. The weapons that the enemies have are cheap weapons made to be bought in bulk, which means they will suck. The weapons you buy will always be better, however CAN become suck as well. And its always great to have those "OH SHIT" moments when theres 3 guys running after you and your gun jams.

    A big problem I had with playing Far Cry 3 after 2 was that FC3 felt like it held the player's hand too much.
    In FC2 combat was more lethal, takedowns less forgiving (you had to execute an enemy afterwards), you could only carry 3 weapons and they were in different classes (So you couldn't carry an assault rifle and a sniper rifle at the same time) etc.
    In FC3 though the game was much more streamlined, you had a minimap, you could heal yourself at any time, there was little incentive to sneak in outposts other than because you wanted to due to how forgiving combat was. I found myself enjoying the game a lot less and I didn't really find myself employing things like fire that often. I also didn't like how the player could hold 4 weapons of any type and you unlocked most of them at the start of the game.
    I can see why Ubi did it, because of how a lot of people complained after Far Cry 2. But personally i didn't like a lot of the changes and thought Far Cry 2 was better overall.

    This is also my favorite one in the series, the one that immerses me the most.
    The lack of an instant fast travel really helps with immersion. The fact that at night enemies take longer to notice you also helps with immersion because you can plan on how you want to approach the missions (that's a good use of the safe-house, fast-forwarding time).
    Another use of the safe-house is to store weapons from the Stores to be accessed in them, so for example, if you want to complete a mission with a sniper, but to get there an SMG is better, you can store the sniper in the box and access it from any safe-house that is nearest to the mission.
    One thing you forgot to mention is the limited "inventory". Sometimes it doesn't make sense that you can't use a certain weapon in a certain slot, like the Tranquilizer Rifle (a "Special" weapon and only silenced sniper in the game) in the primary slot (usually for "big" weapons, like any other sniper rifle in the game in fact) and another weapon in the Special slot, like the crossbow.
    At the same time that it's weird, it forces you to think and be tactical about the weapon combinations you carry, making the gameplay more varied, because usually when you choose a different weapon than the ones you use, you have to change the whole combination (so you can be "ready" for any situation).

      @Homer Simpson Right, I mean people say it happens in the middle of a gun fight or when they are driving away from enemies but they clearly aren't being completely honest. The mechanic is designed to happen at the most convenient time when you're not getting attacked or when you're in a town or a gun shop, very rarely do you actually experience the Malaria attack during a inconvenient time. I think it's only happened to me like twice or something and it actually doesn't run out that quickly it's meant to run out as you progress through the story so if someone decided to do the radio towers and find all the diamonds in the first region before progressing through the story they wouldn't actually run out until doing a few main story quests.

      If only they added elements from Far Cry 3 into 2 than it would have been awesome.
      Far Cry 2 stuff: Keep Weapon Jamming, Keep the much more detalied Healing animations, keep the African setting, which I found much more interesting than Tropical Islands, Keep the minimalistic interface, keep the map.
      Far cry 3 Stuff: Add wildlife that was prevelent in Far Cry 3, add much more fairer enemies and no respawning checkpoints, add the Stealth system of 3 that imo is better than how 2 handled it, add the weapon mods like suppresors and sights.

    I think almost every thing you listed as "frustrating" I think is phenomenal, I specifically picked up guns from enemies, because jamming is fun and a sudden rush of adrenaline, a gun exploding in my hand and me needing to scrounge for a new one somewhere on the ground is again, fun and sudden. The only thing I agree is annoying is vehicular combat, it is fun trying to juke and ram the enemy but most the time you just have to get out and shoot him, which is no fun.
    I think the biggest mistake people do with this game is coming in and expecting Far Cry, Ive honestly got a much more similiar experience to the STALKER games with this one.

    No other open world game has as much environmental detail as this one. The way the fire spreads and the interaction with the foliage is amazing and all this was accomplished with an engine that will run on a toaster.Shame that the developer did not replicate this in Far Cry 3 and 4.

      Exactly,I had Far Cry 2 on a medicore-at-best laptop and I was surprised how it could run at a smooth 45-60 FPS even in caotic fire fights with the fire spreading everywhere and cars exploding,or how it ran just as smooth in dense jungles as in plain deserts.
      However I was the disapointed how Far Cry 3 couldn't run at even 5 FPS on my machine.

I loved the way firefights played out in the jungle areas, like how when you started shooting, you're bullets would occasionally cut away bits of leaves, bushes and branches, the same with the enemies, and you could also run away for a bit, and one of the dudes you were fighting would scream: "Ceasefire! Ceasfire!" Like they lost your position, and the way you could essentially block off routes to flank you by setting the grass alight with molotovs. It was incredible, and still is.

    No word on the subject of diamond hunting aside from missions and sidequests or did I miss it?
    That aspect, together with the slow pace of the game overall (which is no flaw at all), makes for a very entertaining playthrough. On your way to a mission, you always check that blinking sensor while driving, so the "boring" driving passages become a lot more interesting that way. In fact, I often found myself getting distracted by this exploration feature and payed a lot more attention to it than I should've. Well, I ended up with a lot more time well spent, though. :P
    And since each map has some sort of indicator how many diamonds are still missing in this region, they implemented a collectable item that makes actual sense, has a proper value and rewards exploration, and it never gets old somehow.
    I was actually expecting more flak for the ever respawning enemies at outposts after you cleared one and it gets out of sight. A mechanic that is a pain in the ass usually, but somehow... works in Farcry 2. I guess the gunplay is just so much fun an way better than in later Farcry games that it remains fun to, as you put it, experiment with weapon loadouts. That semi-automatic rifle was pure gold btw. ;)
    And you are right about how ruthless the enemies truly are. However, the stealth mechanics to catch enemies off-guard work great in this game and are nicely balanced, yet they're still more challenging than the crappy MGS 5 in which standing still in the open made you invisible. lol
    btw, is there a reason you never headshot anyone in the video?

Yeah the missions can be quite repetitive but the amount of experimentation with the various weapons and tools at your disposal more than makes up for it. Also, the limited healing and weapon jamming mechanics while frustrating really add tactical depth into firefights and encourage you to work for those upgrades which ultimately feels really rewarding.

    I always get frustrated when thinking about Far Cry 2, because it's one of those mediocre games that was very close to being great, but was ruined by a few bad design decisions. All they had to do was to change the respawn time, fix the stealth system so that enemies don't hear you stabbing someone from 100m away and maybe add some backstories to the side missions. I tried to finish the game maybe 5 times now because I like the core gameplay and the different playstyles you can use, but I always get bored to death halfway through because of the tedious clearing of outposts every 5 minutes.

    I thought I was the only person who enjoyed the game despite it's flaws. I really liked the setting and how the game gives me this Lord Of War-movie feeling as I play it.
    Personally I disliked how the game intro portrays this war-torn African country where the people are trying to flee a country riddled with war, but all of this is absent when you start the game and you never see these civilians after that again. It is just constant barrage of mercenaries who want to kill you on sight from that point on. Nothing else, no people struggling, no wildlife trying to attack you, nothing.
    Another gripe I had was the stealth system that was really relentless and broken. That is one thing the newer games got right, because I was able to pull stealth off in Far Cry 2 maybe once or twice.
    Then I also felt that the weapon system was pretty dumb, how weapons are either assigned to slot 1 for secondary, 2 for primary and 3 for special weapons. So if I wanted to carry out a sabotage mission with C4 I would have to leave my sidearm behind, same if I wanted to bring a silenced sniper rifle I would have to leave my special weapon behind etc.
    But that all put aside the game had a pretty terrific world and organic gun play. Whenever you are attacking enemies head on or sniping from a distance before moving in and finishing the stragglers with an uzi.
    I still remember a moment when I popped an enemy with my sidearm, only to make the enemy fall down injured and reach for his handgun. As I was about to pop the guy one last time, my handgun jammed.
    It was a pretty hilarious standoff where the guy was reaching for his sidearm as I was desperately trying to unjam my gun. Cleared the chamber at the last second, popped one last round to the guy and watched him fall over. Something I even still remember.

    Far Cry 2 was one of my favorite games of the last gen. So many heart pounding moments that many modern games still haven't been able to replicate. To me its biggest drawback was a lack of a stealth mechanic, it was so frustrating not being able to sneak around as much as you'd like. That said it felt so authentic and real and rather realistic weapon degradation if you know anything about firearms. I wish the series will go back to the Far Cry 2 formula.

      I think this game has the best, most realistic stealth I've ever played. None of this 'indicators' and 'marking' nonsense, you actually have to pay attention to your surroundings, be patient, make good use of luck here and there, and remember that concealment often beats cover. Know where the enemy is and keep something between you and him. Stealth is totally OP. You can sneak up on guards, hold your gun up to them, and they'll drop their gun and bargain with you for their lives. I've ghosted more than a few main story missions, cackling as I blow up the objective with a single IED from a mile away, never having made a sound. All it takes is patience and situational awareness.
      And the silenced Makarov.

You would notice if someone was there, so why not your opponents as well. This game did a good job of making your opponents feel like actual humans.

    My favorite game in the series as well! I think this is the only one that lives up to what the name ''FarCry'' implies. The environment feels exceptionally hostile and I think the malaria gimmick helps a lot with this - even if you are not fighting anyone the place itself is still slowly killing you! This is the only game in the series where I felt like I am someone who is braving realistic harsh conditions and not just someone having fun with his guns on a pretty island. In general this game has a ton of great ideas that are just underdeveloped. What I dislike about the later installments of the series is that they did not keep and improve these elements but skipped them altogether in favor of a flashier simplified play style. I would have liked a deeper more realistic experience like the one that FarCry2 is aiming for although does not fully achieve. Lastly I would say that the best way to play this one is to only use the safe houses as saving points - it made the game 100 times more immersive for me!

    I still remember buying and playing this game on my Xbox 360 the year it came out for that console and having tons of fun with it.
    I really enjoyed the open world aspect, the weapon reliability system, the malaria sickness system and the multiple approaches that you could take to attack the enemy camps and bases.
    But what really bogged down the experience for me was the enemies, the side missions and the repetitiveness.
    You were always fighting the same 3 or 4 guys who spoke with the same 2 voices, used the same vehicles or weapons and said the same things.
    The side missions were always the same ones and made you go to the same places to kill the same guy or blow up the same building over and over again.
    While it took me some months, i eventually started to see how repetitive the game had become and decided to unlock the SVD Sniper Rifle and the M249 LMG and use those 2 weapons for the remainder of the campaign since i had learned through experience that long ranged attacks and weapons that carried 100 rounds were far more reliable than short range attack weapons and weapons that required frequent reloading.
    But even that didn't save the game for me and in the end it had become so repetitive that i simply gave up playing the story mode and gave it to a friend who was dying to play it, only to find out a month later, that he had also grown tired of its repetitive gameplay and had it sitting on a shelve in his room doing nothing.

    Surprised that it's your favorite Far Cry too... I mean even though I thoroughly enjoy Far Cry 3, this one just has this atmosphere to it, and some really great and sometimes really bad design choices. I love driving a swamp boat with a machine gun through rivers that are in-between colossal cliffs, making a massive trench, with all the vines and foliage hanging in between, it's something to behold. Oh and plants have detailed destructibility, hacking at plants with a machete like an adventurer in a jungle causing branches to fly off, high caliber machine gun rounds cutting apart bushes and ferns as you slaughter your foes, great fun.
    This game should have had a single player map editor, I would have loved to make a custom single player campaign.

    When I started playing PC games this was one of my first open world adventure game, amazing game of all time, because it constantly keeps you very busy, yes for some it is too much, but it was so much fun for and some of my friends, also the manual map without pausing the games is just icing on top, also as someone who has finished this game multiple times, game is very very cool, moral of story is a bad merc changes and sacrifice yourself to save a lot of people. I loved this game so much, the realism with weapons is very cool, some of my tips - Start doing new weapon mission from the shop as soon as possible, only use new weapons, change them every time you visit a gun shop, also for stealth missions grab a sniper and somehow for every mission there will be a mountain top position get there and finish them (also buy stealth upgrades and car upgrades from shop), then go and take the outpost, fun game. And the graphics even by todays standard is an amazing looking game, has the best sunrises and sunsets. Also use the buses as much as you can. It is like the taxi system from GTA 4. Also save a lot. Also for every mission you have alternatives to work with your buddies who other main characters you did not chose when the game started, do all of them much needed variety and you will need them when you go down they will come and save you. Also extra diamonds baby, buy all the shop upgrades. Also find the golden guns if you can in game, they never get stuck. I have played this game many many times on PC and never seen any of these bugs. Remember you only get 4-5 pills at any given time, so every 3 attacks I do a pills mission.

      +Cactino Yeah, that bothered me as well. Everything felt either too brown, or too washed out. However there are some graphical tweaks/mods that are pretty easy to install and make the game far more colorful. The only thing they can't really fix is the fact the jungle foliage textures are actually rather blue, instead of green. Savannah foliage is fine though.

    I really enjoy Far Cry 2. I played it so much in 2008. I played it on the PC when I first built mine in 2012. I had such a blast with the game and the only complaints I really have ever had are the Brown and the Malaria. I really enjoyed what they tried to do with the Buddies. Mods today have fixed a few of the things, but it still has its quirks. If only I had known in 2012 what Far Cry 3 was gonna play like I may have saved myself the hype and just forgotten about it though. I feel like Far Cry 2 feels desperate and lonely while 3 and 4 feel like Cookie Cutter Sandboxes. Great Review as always m8

    I loved this game, it had such a realistic and immersive approach to action FPS. I wish the later far cry games tried to maintain that. They are for the most part still good, but there is something to be said about that shiny new shotgun wearing out over time with use to the point that it stove pipes in the middle of a fire fight and you have to take cover, and rapidly tap releod to clear it. Go to long and it blows up in your hands, not to mention preforming triage on yourself by removing bullets with pliers.

      I just don't see how its a problem, it breaks up the shooting. Its not necessarily a shooting game its more like a survival game and the shooting is so intense so its nice to kick back and go for a drive. My only gripe is there is no radio like in fc3 in the vehicles .

    • @birkbengtsson5297
      @birkbengtsson5297 7 років тому +2

      +Devonian You're entitled to your opinion but I don't find it fun to drive long stretches of nothingness between *EVERY* mission throughout the whole game. I've tried getting into the game three times now in the spam of two years or something but the driving is such a turnoff for me and I like driving usually. Its kind of like a rollercoaster of fun and boring but you drive more than you shoot so the boring outweighs the fun in my opinion.

    This game is just like Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain (except MGS has less respect for your time with boring helicopter rides). One game is loved, one is hated. I wonder why?

    • @matman000000
      @matman000000 8 років тому +9

      +TadejVig MGS V doesn't require you to clear every checkpoint between you and your objective. You can easily go around most of them or sneak through thanks to much better stealth mechanics, and fultoning soldiers and vehicles from checkpoints rewards you for your actions. In FC2, there are only a couple of checkpoints you can safely bypass and the best reward you can hope for is a box of ammo, so it only slows you down. MGS V was basically FC2 done right, because it was very similar, but solved FC2's problems with a lack of progression and repetitive gameplay.

    • @TadejVig
      @TadejVig 8 років тому +1

      +Max Payne MGSV has really repetitive gameplay in my opinion. Hop on a heli, wait for 5 minutes, either sneak in or shoot your way in for the 500th time with the same enemies and in the literally same base (in chapter 2, with literally same objectives/missions), then run out, wait for the heli for 3 minutes, and go to the base which takes about 10 minutes, where you can upgrade stuff - if you grind enough before that. And you have to wait real time for stuff to unlock, like in a free to play mobile game. If you don't go back to base you have to ride for 10 minutes to the next objective, or if you dare to bring another buddy, walk there for 10 minutes or look for a car for 10 minutes and then ride there for 10 minutes.
      Also, MGSV basically abandoned all that made MGS series great in favor of another generic open world game, so it's even worse.

    • @matman000000
      @matman000000 8 років тому

      TadejVig It is very repetitive, unfortunately. Mainly because of the mission objectives, which are almost always about extracting a person/vehicle and escaping the area. It lacks the unique moments that I've come to expect from MGS games.
      I'm also not a fan of the base management part. It was fine from the start, but towards the end of the game it really started feeling more like FarmVille then MGS.
      But I still enjoyed MGS V a lot more than FC2 thanks to all the different gadgets, weapons and buddies you get. FC2 had weapons for different approaches, but MGS V took it to a whole new level. You can plan operations to the tiniest details, create distractions, use environments to your advantage and just generally play with the mechanics for hours. I've got 80 hours of playtime and I'm pretty sure I still haven't used about half of all the secrets and mechanics available.
      The other thing is that the game's world reacts to your actions. Every soldier and every vehicle matters. Enemies adapt to your tactics. If you get spotted, close checkpoints will be alerted as well. This is what was missing from FC2: the world seemed dead, artificial. You returned to a cleared outpost after 2 minutes and it was repopulated like nothing happened. It demotivated me from using different approaches because in the end, carefully sniping everyone with a dart rifle and blowing the place up with a grenade launcher had the same effect.
      While I'd say Phantom Pain is a pretty weak MGS game, I think it's a better mercenary simulator than Far Cry 2.

    • @matman000000
      @matman000000 8 років тому +1

      The Avid Gamer It doesn't, though. The enemies can hear you stabbing someone with a machete from a mile away. And even if you manage to get through using silenced MP5 and the dart rifle, there's no reward for stealth like in MGS V or FC 3. It has the exact same effect as blowing a checkpoint up, it just takes 3x longer to do.

    • @ZamboinElite
      @ZamboinElite 8 років тому +1

      +The Avid Gamer Most sites that reviewed MGSV did not actually finish the game. They went to a Konami held press event where they were given a set amount of time to play the game under supervision. Which on average gave them a 30 hour play through. This is part of the reason, but also because people who review games are morons or lack integrity. MGSV is just unengaging, shoddy, disappointing and in a lot of ways pathetic.

    i always liked how the AI in far cry 2 felt kinda realistic, the way they only have one leader and pretty much no organisation. the lack of different types that would like command the others seemed to fit the idea of a third world civil war. also, the safe house upgrades always seemed worth it to me. they would allow you to use the safe house as more than just a save spot, you can use it to resupply and store high quality weapons that wont jam in the boxes, so you dont have to back track all the way to a gun shop if you want to swap weapons.

      When I said interesting story I meant the scientific side of it,
      The genetically modified monsters and your battle against them was what separate all other Far Cry's and the 1'st one. In all other you fight boring humans and some animals. But in 1'st one you have monsters which are much more interesting as opponents.
      I would pay to have entire Far Cry game killing only them on an entire island. With the elements of base building and army organizing. Now that Far Cry would rock.

    Game is great yet flawed and I would take it over far cry 3 and 3.5 any day.
    Story - Not much to say here but playing as a merc tracking down a corrupted arms dealer in central africa is far more engaging that playing as some college kid who holiday takes a turn for the worse when the Pirates who run the island show up.
    Gameplay - Far cry 2 wins for me because of the focus on realism. Taking out your map, reacting to weapons failing and enemies having the chance to see you before you see them is far better than having a dam eagle come out o the sky and start tearing at your arm. Far cry 2 does not hold your hand, you have to properly scout outposts, and manage your supplies in multi stage missions. Far cry 3 casts you as a super soldier and stops being serious in every " gameplay " vs realism decision, and for me the hit on immersion is ultimately too much.
    Presentation - Crytek have made some of the best looking games ever on pc, and far cry 2 is no exception. You are constantly looking and the world with almost no hud elements apart from the number of syringes you have left and ammo. Far cry 2 is constantly shoving its ugly UI in your face. From the mini map that shows ever dam green, yellow and blue PLANT (?!) to the menus, which are also hideous and you are forced to use them for far too many tasks.

    I loved the atmosphere and how immersive the game was. I always chose to do the missions during the in game night and you could use the buses and then drive on the railroad or off road to avoid several of the road blocks. That made the driving and the game extremely atmospheric.
    Far Cry 2 is much more immersive than Far Cry 3, which feels too cartoony at times. I don't think Far Cry 2 was perfect, it was too repetitive often, but you really felt part of that world.
