I watch all of the fancy Aussie car channels, but I get so excited when a new Back Shed episode comes up in my notifications. It truly has to be my favourite. You truly are a living legend Mick and love your love for all old Aussie cars, especially those that have been left for dead by others. The Falcon Ute is beutiful and you're right, a sweet little 289 Windsor in her would just be the best. Keep up the awesome work, mate. I look forward to the next episode.
Ya way too kind James, I really appreciate ya saying mate thanks made my week. I love finding old junk and getting it to a point where it’s got a second wind. Thanks mate and stick around as there’s heaps coming mate from all brands . 🍺🍺👍
Ditto
I come from this generation, used to sell them in fact right from the very first Falcon, the XL had a beefed front end suspension, I still remember the name of my first customer.
From this generation the XM was my favourite model, having a tighter and better handling body, the Ford slogan of the time was 'Certified Golden Quality' amazing for me to find your channel, as I now live so far away from OZ.....
Thanks!
Cheers mate 🍺🍺👍
The reason you have vacuum lines going to the fuel pump is , the car has vacuum accessories like windshield wipers and HVAC that is vacuum operated on a lot of them and the fuel pump makes more consistent vacuum than the engine does ! I hope this helps you in the future and I look forward to seeing more of your shows 😊
🍺👍
Love the body lines of the old Falcons, running down the side and around the tail lights , she's a keeper, always wanted one , 👍
🍺🍺👍
Your dedication to detail is exemplary..explaining probs with fuel ⛽ tank ..and rescuing it ..work alone ..your plan to save it ..mate this is better than watching a hit streaming show Netflix..work detail is amazing ..U deserved every beer 🍺 after ur hard day work getting this video out .
Cheers John🍺🍺👍
I agree
That tool you found is to remove rubber hoses from things like radiators, fuel lines, water lines.
That ute is the same model and colour as we had on the farm just needs a bench seat
Yeah right I can see that now , to put down the side of a hose to unstick it 🍺🍺👍
I have one I've used it for over 35 +years
I'm pretty sure You'll find out that it comes in pretty handy removing most hose clamped type hoses it will save you from a lot of twisting and pulling to break the seal
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
This will be the first one i watch without a beer lol (8am). 😂
Hahah yep 🍺👍
Poor form it's lunchtime somewhere, get one into ya!
It’ll be the worst video you’ve watched for that single reason Hahhaha🍺🍺👍
My dad had a wagon version of this model after he crashed the earlier XK wagon. He was a shearer and travelled many many miles on back roads of NSW and Qld. It was better than the Holdens in wet flooded areas and seemed to go forever. I have wanted to get one to resurrect for years.
Good job mate.
Cheers mate for watching🍺👍
What a find!! The body is so straight & nearly rust free. And even the grill looks near perfect!! You don't find many XL utes in this condition. I hope it gets a full restoration.
You never know mate 1 step at a time always forward👍🍺
I wonder if the car has papers??. Not sure how it works in that country far as registration and ownership
here in Australia he will have a receipt from the wreckers he brought it from.
These are the only proof of ownership required to get it registered. Various states have different requirements for proof of roadworthyness and insurance requirements. ( some are easy some are not )
But chasing titles is not a thing here.
I like her a lot..She's got really nice lines, and those wheels really suit her too..Thanks..UK
Cheers Paul thanks 🍺🍺👍
You do great work, but I think I'd have rebuilt that carb about 5 steps ago!!
Hahaha yeah it was always going to happen hahahaha, I let it go for a bit as I’ve had ones before that came good with a little running. Cheers for watching mate🍺👍
Great video. Just love the old fords. My dad had an XM falcon. Enjoying your vids. Thanks Mick
🍺🍺👍
Love the bloopers. Another awesome project. 👌
Cheers Barry
Yeah there was a few stuff ups and bloopers in this one I’d just finished a nightshift so my brain was out to lunch hahaha🍺👍
@@backshed5295 good old nightshift.
another great vid
love seeing these old girls get saved
🍺🍺👍
Amazing find. More amazing it started and ran so well! Give that old girl a full restore. She deserves it.
Cheers Don🍺👍
This has become my favorite revival vlog. Watching from the states
Cheers G man , please share it around over there mate 🍺👍
Mate just love you videos, not only do you know what your talking about but your very clever, and funny as! Luv it!
Haha I don’t know about funny mate it’s more stupid hahahah
But seriously thanks for watching mate🍺🍺👍
Hey Mick. You know, I'm no Ford bloke, but boy would I have jumped at that one myself had I been there and seen it. Reason being that - as you said - she was so complete (and untouched) under the bonnet and the lower half of the car was so well intact and obviously not full of poo, so she was obviously a bloody good contender and well worth giving a second chance at life.
I'm also a sucker for that era Falcon with their rounded nose, little fins, body lines and the shiny dress mouldings that just highlighted them. I love the dual-circle tail lights as well, although that XL has a bit of a Marty Feldman thing going on, eh! I much prefer that generation over the XR to XY era as the earlier ones had more detail, but that 2nd generation had some good lookers amongst them too.
She's a great little project, mate - and I commend you chucking them modern seats as far from it as you can! I reckon even my 5'9" frame would have had trouble squeezing in there. Modern seats are good if the look fits and they are generally better at holding you in one place, but those didn't suit and it's pointless having seats that won't let you get in and drive the beast, eh. If that little six is still strong - and it seems like it is - it seems a bit of a waste to me to pull it and sit it to one side in favour of a wee eight. Sure, a 260 / 289 / 302 would give it the right sound for those wheels and make it more appealing to a wider group of people to maybe sell it to, but that ol' 170 cube six and three-on-the-tree seems more fitting to me because it still works so well.....albeit with a noisy thrust bearing. Reckon she'd stand a cam swap and a bigger carbie just to liven her up a bit??!
(As a side note, I had a noisy thrust bearing in a car that had sat for years too. When it was making the noise, the car used to be difficult to select gears and would creep while in gear and the clutch fully depressed. After a couple of thousand miles, it shut up for about 90% of the time and after 5000 miles it made no sound at all....and yes, things still worked as they should. A mate of mine had been harping on at me to change it, but I did 30,000 miles in that thing without a problem before I sold it. My advice is to give it a bit and see if she shuts up on her own. What's the worst that can happen?)
Looking forward to seeing more on this old girl when things come together to make it possible. All the best.
Love the story here and your insight too.
Cheers Lance yeah I reckon there’s other more important things to work on than the clutch bearing at the minute so I’ll take your advice and just let it do it’s thing for a bit haha🍺🍺👍
🍺👍
History of the world
@@xbgtfella - Sorry mate. Did I strain your brain with all those words? Better go have a lie down then, eh.
Another bloody good episode Mick. Love the way the old falcon just started up and no smoke, love the wheels on it too .
Cheers mate
Cheers Ian yeah that was 1 I was confident of then way not confident of then surprised it idled almost straight away. Hahhaha 🍺👍
Those tires and wheels look absolutely perfect for that thing
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
Thanks again mick looking forward to see what you get up to with this one.
Piss funny bloopers 😂
Hahaha yeah I get heaps of people saying they love bloopers , me stuff up and being a dick Hahhaha . Im just doing what I do Hahha 🍺🍺🍺
Great score Mick . Shes in pretty decent nick for her age. Good ol 6 Banger good old engines. So simple but reliable.
🍺🍺👍
Love those XK, XL, XM and XPs. Beautiful cars, particularly the coupes and utes. Bugger all around though
🍺🍺👍
Mate. That thing is a bloody pearler. What a score.
Cheers Mick🍺🍺👍
Nice one mate! Full credit for saving the old Ute. Keep up the good work mate, enjoyable as always 👌
Cheers Philip I appreciate ya saying mate 🍺🍺🍺👍 she ain’t done yet
backshed.net.au/
Hey can’t thank everyone enough for watching and the comments , I really do love this junk and ya’s make me want to work harder to get stuff / new episode up quicker . Cheers people 🍺🍺🍺🍺👍
The patina on that rig is perfect.
Cheers mate🍺👍
Ha! That spare wheel extraction went exactly like the one on an old XM ute I did years ago. Had a petrified rat in there too. Good times!
Hahah yeah I feel ya pain hahaha. 🍺🍺👍
Good job on saving another Classic Mick, I wonder if somebody Jacked the Car up using the Sump?
I’m guessing something like that mate🍺🍺👍
That was fun. Imagine a bird loitering around your shed looking at a Falcon. Good job Mick. the old bird looks ok for it's age.
Hahah cheers mate🍺👍
That tool you round like a scrib is a steel fixers tool for wiring foundation steel, like for cement floor's and concrete skie scrapers, etc, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
🍺🍺👍
Wow, just discovered your channel, i have some watching to do now... Nice Falcon, last year i pulled an 1968 xt Ford Falcon ute out of the scrub from a friends station. 3 hours of towing through the malley scrub at 60km/hour and i hit bitumen. Farmers used to take the radiators out, as in the scrub that is the first thing stolen. 3 days later the farmer dropped off the radiator and told me it was running around 20 years ago. My XT ute is in a very similar condition to yours but has a few bullet holes and a roo shooting platform. I am tempted to get it roadworthy again with a scrub and maybe a clear coat to retain the patina. I am now so inspired!!!
Excellent to hear mate 🍺🍺👍
Great episode. Can't wait for the next installment on this rig
I’ll try not to make it too far away mate🍺👍
That car is so over the top cool I can't take it! I'm super jealous, I rarely find anything like that here in the States and if I do they are all so overpriced. Can't wait to watch more content on this one. GREAT JOB!!
Cheers Paul🍺👍
I’m glad this channel popped up in my suggested videos. I love it, keep up the good work Mick
Cheers mate welcome aboard 🍺🍺👍
Love seeing these Aus car shows. Great video.
Cheers Eric🍺🍺👍
What a great find. Nice work saving it from the graveyard. Don’t see many in such good condition anymore.
You sure don’t mate 🍺🍺👍
Great find. I wouldn’t clear coat it. That looks kind of fake to me. The wax is a better option. Btw that little rectangular Ford badge goes on one side of the lower front mudguard. If you google a 1963 Ford Falcon XL brochure you will see it. Well done on bringing it back to life.
🍺👍
Straw inside it ..chooks be laying eggs 🥚 in it ..amazing ford ute never the less ..I love the old style Ford retro tail lights ..they are so cool 🎉
🍺👍
Pretty good video!
Like all the birds going at it!
Watching your video and my parrots were going ape shit! 😂
Hahaha yep we have a fair bit of wildlife here hahah👍👍🍺
Great work Mick. Had me smiling all the time. What with you your commentary and seeing the success of getting the old girl going. Looks like powder blue with a few spots of sunburn. Already looking forward to the next instalment.
Cheers Ross thanks for coming back for another video mate 🍺🍺👍
Full metal jacket on the top of the tank, nice one!
🍺👍
I love your enthusiasum, I would have given up along time ago, Power to you..........
Cheers Noel I appreciate you watching mate 🍺👍
Okay let's go. Firstly I was going to say vacuum wipers but you answered you own question. Secondly now I wish I had have told you to use solder to repair the fuel tank back when I watcher the HQ episode. 3rd.. If your going back to the wrecking yard to get the seat get the fuel tank too. It might be okay or make one out of the two. Cheers Stew
Hey stew yeah I hear ya mate , I don’t give up real easy mate but solder or weld that tank is beyond me. It started with a few then the more I moved it and cleaned it the more holes opened it’s paper thin 😞. As for wipers yep I learnt something new 🍺🍺👍
My first car was a 63 XL Falcon with a 170Pursuit motor. It was about 10 years old when I got it. When you wondered what that second vacuum line was for I was trying to tell you “ for the wipers”. I remember when driving in the rain if you put your foot down the wipers would nearly stop and as soon as you took you foot of the accelerator the wipers would go mad fast 😂😂. My sedan was the same blue with a white top , was a great first car, I graduated to a 68’ Monaro GTS after that . Thanks for the memories. Look forward to seeing what you do with it .
That’s half the fun mate isn’t it , the memories! 🍺🍺👍cheers mate🍺
Well mate shes a good find. And i like the way she didnt want to rev early. We dont want to sprint straight after a sleep. We wait til our bodies warm up abit b4 going hard out lol.
Hahaha yep🍺👍
Gotta love those vacuum wipers...Idlleing great, but under acceleration sometimes nothing hahaha..But what a find..
100% mate stick around heaps more coming 🍺👍
Mate. Enjoy the channel and you have some great tips. How do you degas the fuel tank for welding ? Interesting about the acid to get rid of rust..
Those old Ford sixes are the bomb. Me mum had a the XM 170 Super Pursuit and a mate the 144 in a wagon. Solid
lifters, no syncro on first. 5 turns lock to lock on the huge steering wheel. Good brakes. Those donks will not die. Get into it. That motor will come up sweet with a good flogging. Exhaust manifold cast as part of the head stopped them getting molested. Never as smooth as a Holden red, as you noticed.
But. I have to confess. I was watching you trying to get and keep it running. I was thinking.... Why is he not using the
choke? It seemed to be connected. Sorry, but I was shouting at the screen. Use the choke, use the choke !!! 🙂
Yep.. .the clutch is knackered. Starter a bit sad. But I like those wheels. Windsor in those have been done. I reckon a bit of rust repairs and a bit of paint and she would be a great shop truck. On a fine day. Those vacuum wipers get old very quickly. I think the later models had electric ones? Retro fit?
Anyway... enjoy the channel, and it good to see some old tin get back on the road.
Cheers mate I appreciate ya watching
As far as degas mate I generally acid first then water then weld but this one I just flushed water then started cutting because it was that bad the acid wouldn’t have stayed in it long enough to clean it hahah . As for the choke yeah I guess I could have used it by disconnecting the cable ( cable seized) but it was a 30degree day and I was probably more watching the lack of accelerator squirter and the vac leaks but hey that’s what happened on the day hahah🍺👍
I was siting on the bonnet of one of those (station wagon but same year) was spotter in the long grass for stumps. We were out to chainsaw some logs..........we hit a stump and I went flying! Took the three of us to lift the front off that stump. haha! Good times.
Hahahah yep good times 🍺👍
super fantastic choice = i saw one 50 y ago torquise with all mustang emblems 4 wheel disc`s big locker diff 289 hipo quad webers 4 speed - dripping with chrome and paint ! wish i was rich .
Cheers Ronnie thanks for watching mate🍺👍
Hi Mick, I think your ute has vacuum wipers and that pipe you mentioned probably feeds the wipers. Really good find not much to do after all. the bearing noise operating the clutch will as you suggested will be the throw out bearing. Keep them comming...John
Cheers John🍺👍
Great show! Well explained and interesting to follow. Good to see old engineering brought back to life.
🍺🍺👍
Genuinely good stuff, you have a knack of matching cars and wheels, it has its best mod before it left the trailer!
100% mate . We’ll see where this one takes us 🍺🍺👍
Just found this channel, love your work Mick, and sense of humour, hilarious when you called yourself a dickhead for not realising something you missed. 😂😂
Hahaha cheers mate 🍺🍺👍
When I bought my first car (XL Falcon, with a beautiful hood ornament to boot) I had really wanted the ute, the dashboard had two tiny plastic silver ornaments to distinguish the petrol and temp gauges, hence your holes in the plastic facia. Also loved the colour names they had for these models interiors, Koala grey, Pacific blue, Waratah red, Wattlebark Tan etc. So good to see you bring this one back to life. On ya.
Cheers Brett thanks for watching mate , I do love the memories old car bring with them. What colour would mine be? 🍺👍
@@backshed5295 I think the colour is called Starlight Blue. Good luck with future restoration/ preservation.
Cheers mate
@@brettsalter3300 Thanks Brett, those color names are 'cool' to recollect here today in our time.
I had thought I saw a hint of blue in the finish of this ute...
My Aunt’s first car was a white 63 saloon Falcon. When I was about 3 or 4 I found a nice can of red barn paint and proceeded to go to work on the passenger side. Good times
Hahahha🍺🍺👍
You do a amazing job this one is coming up clean
Stick around mate there’s heaps more coming 🍺👍
Backshed is a top channel. Thanks for taking the trouble to share these stories. Love the merch. I'm leaving this comment here and wish you fine weather and happy trails.
Cheers mate and if you bought merchandise thanks twice hahah but seriously I do appreciate it as these old girls ain’t free and I’m dumping heaps of $ into new cars that are coming soon so cheers for the support 🍺🍺🍺🍺👍
@@backshed5295 Yeah mate, I got a cap and stubby holder and putting both to good use. I know you put a lot of work and cash into these shows and you've got a winning formula I reckon. The chats and demonstrations, tunes and general vibe very enjoyable. Look forward to the next one! Cheers
She’s a sweet looking car mate , just love it! Good on ya 🤙🤙🤙🤙
Cheers Steve 🍺🍺👍
So nice. I’m thinking 289 or 302 with a lazy slush box. Your classic white steelies and centre caps. Slight lowering job. Patina paint. Mint.
Your onto it Lurch 🍺👍, I like your thinking.
beautiful property mate another nice find imagine the ute with a splash of paint love the wheels
Thanks Russel🍺👍
Spent my young years rescuing early falcons from farms tips and wrecking yards around melbourne...Love these old cars and would do it all over again...cheers to a great video buddy...My XL had a 289 windsor and toploader...they were made for V8 swaps...this cars in good hands !!!
Thanks mate and yeah I agree on the “made for engine swaps “ 🍺👍
Great episode legend..
your starting to get the old wrecking yard pre start dialed..
Unfortunately I didn’t get to start that one out there it just got winched on but maybe next one 👍🍺
Congratulations on the good engine 😊
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
Just finished a 63 great job
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
Another killer video mate! Can't wait to see part 2
Cheers Bruce 🍺🍺👍
THANKYOU for an entertaining video
Your most welcome mate👍🍺🍺 thanks for watching mate
Hi Mick that tank looks a lot like the tank in my XY ute, the filler neck was on the opposite side because the sender faces the rear. Those tank halves are the same maybe you could reposition the filler and sender openings, turn it upside down and make a new lid, if the top was any better. If it all turns to shite get an ally one made job done. Good luck, Cheers from NZ, Phil.
Cheers mate yeah I’ll cook up something haha🍺👍
Ah sunday morning and an episode of Backshed Mick. Perfect👍👍
Cheers Bryan🍺🍺👍
It was very refreshing watching someone from a different continent go through the same issues and triumphs as every other car buff world wide. That ranchero is on my wish list. I hope you have fun with it.
Cheers David thanks for watching mate and please share the videos with your groups abroad for me 🍺🍺👍
Jesus watching these vids has me looking at my Dads VY, extractors new alternator, brake upgrade and no im not having a moment with myself 😂 enough talk get stuck in...
Hahaha yep less talk mate hahah🍺🍺👍v6 or LS VY ?
@@backshed5295 the mighty 3.8 ecotec 350k's zero oil consumption pulls like a train all day but those brakes I go down the Clyde Mountain and end up having to call Repco halfway for new rotors they are shite... a set if 18in Rims and 330mm rotors etc incoming
This video was a revelation to watch. Just goes to show that you can bring something classic back to life when it seemed well and truly dead sitting in that car boneyard. You are really doing a great service in resurrecting these tarnished gems.
And that trick with the starter motor...you wouldn't believe it...I had to try for the first time on my XD this morning when it decided not to turn over. I used to do it years ago on an XC so I gave it a shot. Started straight away! And a few hours later here you are explaining it to the viewers😀
Hahahah yeah pretty common once they get a few years on them🍺🍺👍
Sad to see so many projects, never be !!! …… but you do a great job saving what you do. Love the old XL Ute , love to see more of it. How’s the arm wear on the drivers side door, reminds one of the days when every self respecting boy from the country had his elbow out the window. Cheers and Beers Mate 🍻🍻🍻🍻
Yeah that drivers door patina is perfect 🍺🍺👍
Luv it my dad had 1 when i was a kid.
Cheers Kenny🍺👍
I want to see more of that Falcon Ranchero.
I have a’61 Falcon Sedan. It has a ‘65 200 (3.3) and runs great. I plan to pop a Holley Sniper on it soon.
Great job mate!!!!!
🍺👍
@@backshed5295 Hey mate! I didn’t catch what size those tires and rims are. Would you mine letting me know? Those look awesome. Really changed the look.
Wheels on my Falcon are too tiny for my liking.
Rim size is in the start of the video but tyres are 235/35-18 and 215/35-17
@@backshed5295 Sorry. I don’t hear so well.
I was hoping I could make a 215/50/18 fit all four, then lower it slightly. First thing I need to do is get rid of the four lugs and change to five.
Thanks for the info.
Hey Mick, as someone else mentioned you can get fuel tank restoration/sealer kits. KBS and POR15 both do a good one, the sealer dries to a hard ceramic coating and will fill any small pinholes. Have used them myself with good results
Cheers mate I’ll look into it🍺👍
Those wheels look cool.
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
What a ride! If it were over here in the states I've got a sweet 302w that would make it go real fast . Keep up the good work
Cheers Tim 🍺👍
Awesome video. Enjoy watching all of them . Why on earth was that in a wrecking yard ? After a scrub n a wash she looked a million bucks .
Cheers Jamie I can maybe explain that mate is it wasn’t that long ago maybe 20yrs that these type of old cars were worth nothing and I really mean that . I sold a registered HQ 4 door in 2002 for $700 bucks and that was what it was worth. The owner of these cars probably bought them at a similar time but too his credit Didnt crush them for scrap. Stick around mate there’s heaps more coming , even some more from that wrecking yard. 🍺🍺👍
That tool is a hose remover....although I use it for everything .....from pulling Orings to scribing.
Good for unsticking radiator hoses.
🍺🍺👍
Hey mate, recently discovered your'e channel, you are a fucking genius! Iv;e had dozens of old Holdens ,Fords, Vals and other assorted clunkers in my time, all power to you, keep going, cheers!

The wheels actually (in my opinion) actually suits it.

Thanks Ian 🍺🍺👍
Dude, love this old ute mate and have to say thanks for rescuing it. Hopefully you finish it fully as it deserves it. Sounds awesome and how many modern cars would idle like that after sitting all those years...lol
Cheers Roger I appreciate ya saying and watching 🍺👍
Hey mick. Another good video. That thing you got out of the passenger door is a good pick. For cleaning the shit out of the bottom of horses hooves. Random place to find one haha
Very random mate Hahhah🍺🍺👍
It’s a friggin hoof pick. Not a good pick. Haha. Was pretty busy at work when I wrote it. 🤣
The tool you found in the door is a radiator hose removal tool. Love the vids:)
Cheers mate🍺🍺👍
My second favorite Falcon after the XE. So glad you saved her

Great show bud love the restos

That noise is absolutely the release bearing the same thing happened on my 65 C10 so I replaced the clutch and all the components
