  • Stanford students need to get their posts to go viral for a class assignment for CS 278 (Social Computing)! Should I post links to their posts on my channel with 980,000 subscribers (it's jacknjellify lol) to help them get to their goals? 😲😲😲 (EDIT: I actually just found out, the deadline for that project is April 5 at 11:59 PM, which is only 20 hours from now. LOL)
Here's the Stanford class assignment! cs278.stanford....
At Stanford, you can sign up or drop a class within 3 weeks of the start date and not be penalized for it. So, I could still technically take this class this year! (And the syllabus looks pretty interesting, with stuff like "wisdom of the crowds" and "Antisocial computing" coming in the future too). Maybe I should? It seems right up my alley of things I'm interested in!

I feel like the thing about helping people in the class go viral is it kind of defeats the purpose, cause you can't like recognise if your virality strategy is actually very good! How do you know if you should try something different if it gets loads of views anyway? That's what I think anyway. Also part of me thinks if everyone gets the extra credit then is it really an extra credit at all :O

That's a good point! You only learn how to go viral when you try things on your own and either fail or succeed, and then analyze. If a friend gives you all your virality, it doesn't teach you much! So yeah I prob won't share their posts.
Also, yeah, a lot my college classes have grade inflation (most people get As) because of all the extra credit! Kinda weird, but I ain't complaining 😛

Using your connections to help promote yourself is (part of) a strategy though. Getting the attention of someone big(ger) and having them draw attention to you (even if you didn't plan on it happening) is potentially a major factor in going viral. The important thing from the perspective of the assignment would be recognising and explaining this.

@lazykh Isn't looking for connections and trying to weaponize them to promote whatever content you created a valid strategy on its own tho? Probably one of the most obvious and arguably laziest ones, but still a strategy nonetheless.

Having someone famous like and support something is a major factor in things going viral though.

I’d love to see some of the assignments that succeeded in “going viral”, just for curiosity’s sake. that probably isn’t public information though

Being honest, that's actually a very well made assignment, I mean it teaches the student a lot about the modern world of media. And how hard it is to get an idea out there. Plus he even compensated for the fact that you don't go viral which is so awesome. I hope to go to stanford one day.

Yeah, props to Michael Bernstein for crafting it! The struggles of going viral definitely aren't typical college material, but it could be super useful for things like starting a business / getting users / getting fundraising. So it's helpful to learn! And also yes I hope you get into Stanford too ThatEcstaticGuy, I believe in you! :D

Maybe one day! I do think it'd be amazing to become a college professor or something fancy like that, and then I can give lectures on whatever I want to LOL

I agree with the top comment that it wouldn't really be fair to share other student's links on the other channel, but if you were taking the class, I think it would be more than fair to do it for yourself/submit one of your previous works or the channel itself. You've been doing the work yourself for years, so you definitely demonstrated that you know the principles.

I wouldn't do it because when explaining how their content went viral the main answer would be "my friend showed it to his audience which was enough to start a snowball effect"

LOL yeah I do think that would be such a cop-out answer 😆

If you know how you should help them by telling them what stuff goes viral in general (through a public video that i can watch)

"Standford profs very willing to give extra credits" Yup, I had a prof that got his PhD at Standford and he gave so many bonus marks! One guy I knew got 9 out of the 5 bonus marks. Yes you read that right, he got bonus marks that weren't even listed as bonus marks cause the extra features he'd implement were really awesome.

If you took that class, would you be allowed to just submit any of your channels and just stomp everyone?

    • @beskamir5977
      @beskamir5977 3 роки тому

I don't see why he wouldn't be allowed to? He did spend multiple years building an audience after all and even had several things go viral on their own merit.

you could promote all of the content and then the community could promote what they like. that way everyone has a shot to go real viral.

A great book about what it's like to go viral overnight, something I think (maybe) the class would enjoy, is "An Absolutely Remarkable Thing" by Hank Green

It would be strange to push people to actually go viral, because if you're interested in going viral and you're a Stanford student, then you have a project go viral you would probably just pursue that instead of going into a computing job. At least that's what I would've tried.
It is an interesting topic though, and to study virality probably would teach you a lot about 'the algorithm' for UA-cam, or similar things like webpage tags and other technical methods that influence virality.
But yeah, I guess to me, saying your grade is based solely on how viral you go is awful, because many many celebrities and personalities say it's down to luck. It makes more sense to judge why it should've gone viral, and consider why it didn't go viral. Also in that case, boosting other students' projects would be a little unfair and slightly defeat the purpose of the study.
Edit: just some more thoughts, I suppose I'd say consider what you'd actually push to go viral. I can't think of many things you've pushed in videos, but something like that flash game you played as a kid, obviously you're happy to feature it and talk well about it because you enjoyed that product (do you call free games a product? Idk) but anyway, I'd say it's unlikely one of your friends would make something you have such a great experience with, especially in such a short time frame, but if you felt like it would make a good video then go ahead and talk about it with no mention as to the project it's a part of. Similarly you could do it on a smaller scale if it's good, but slightly less interesting. Like do a community post or tweey saying 'hey this thing is pretty cool' and then it would gain natural traction as if any other internet personality had posted something similar. It would also act as something they could write on, like analyse the help that a mention from an established community gives, as opposed to you talking about the project because you want them to get a better grade, and them possibly lying about what made the thing go viral. Maybe also consider how you discovered it, like were you browsing that Facebook page, or did they message you telling you to like their image? If you discovered it naturally then I feel like it's much fairer to then share it if you also enjoyed it, because that's how things do spread.
I'll stop rambling now, it's kinda fun to think about though
