Yeah, doing this exercise with dumbbells feels so much better on the elbows compared doing it with a straight/ez bar. Even if you go heavy still feels comfortable and no unnecessary elbow pain.
Been doing these with dumbells for 4 months now and wow! My triceps look amazing already and my strength has improved like you wouldn't believe which in turn has improved all my pressing movements like never before in such a short space of time. Definitely can't recommend this exercise enough guys!
I began using the dumbbell version a few months ago and you can definitely feel the stretch better and I feel a tighter contraction than with the bar, great recommendation
Jay has forgotten more about weightlifting than I’ll ever know, but that movement I stopped doing a long time ago. Skull crushers. Even with good form it hurt my elbows a lot and would leave me with pain.
@@andrewledford3865 dude he was just saying what works for him and that he also uses what Jay was just showing. Plus some people respond differently and also if you love a movement and it's somewhat effective it's going to work better than others because of consistency. You're more likely to do it more often if you like it. But like I said as long as the thing you like also works and is it dangerous Chillout
Funny, DIPs are much more effective for me than any triceps movement and I tend to do then very slowly and very light weight to really focus on the muscle, but still can't feel a thing when I do overhead extension or moves like that. Dips on the other hand, I tend to do them with no extra weight with 20 - 30reps, and I feel a burn in my triceps everytime I do them, in a good way of course.
I've started to do French Press with one heavy dambell after Jay's advise in an another video of him. Inner head of triceps responded perfectly 💯 Thanks legend 👍🏻💪🏻
I absolutely love the lighting setup of his gym. I'll do bench press at my gym and my eyes are burnt out my skull with the lights. 🇦🇺. Cambered bar? That's what you call it. Curl bar here.
Haven't done these in a while (focusing mostly on heavy-ass hammer strength dips and overhead rope cable extensions for triceps) but love doing these on a decline bench and bringing the dumbbells past my head for an extra stretch at the bottom. Gonna have to reincorporate these this week!
Hammer grip = Inner head Palms down grip = Inner & Middle head Palms up grip = Outer & Middle head Been doing them for years and that's what I noticed when I started playing with different hand positions doing these with dumbbells.
I've always done these but on incline with dumbbells.. and my rotation of my wrists might be a little different but definitely feel it in the longhead of my tricep which is what i'm trying to do.. didn't know it was called a french press 🤘🏽 thats sick.
My first workout for my tricep it will be either the lying down skull crusher using the straightbar or ez bar, but the other day again for my tricep will be the other variation using the dumbell doing this exercise the lying french press,, it gives my tricep so much stretch thats why i build a good tricep and after the end the finisher will be the tricep push down.
I love these..I feel like doing it with the dumbbells are slightly easier on the elbows..I work with heavy steel, hammering etc etc all day so my elbows can ache like a bastard with some tricep movements.
How is it any different than a cable push down? To me a cable push down or whatever you call it is the best for triceps and I always had huge ones. You can drop set quickly. You don’t have to worry about sitting back up with dumbbells where under strain to failure you pull something sitting back up, etc. Dumbell work helps tie all your connectors together but for pure focus on the triceps I’ll take the cable push downs
@@lesliechow7286 All I can tell you is that dumbbell skull crushers is the only exercise that absolutely sets my triceps on fire. It mainly hits the inner head of the triceps. I do rope extensions, but I really don’t feel it all that much tbh. Doesn’t mean that aren’t good or they aren’t doing anything, it just doesn’t give me the same feeling.
Nah man... Skull crushers are hard on elbows... And even activate ur pecs a bit. This one the other hand is completely isolated triceps exercise that I personally felt have u the best stretch
I have a question for you regarding triceps. It might sound dumb. I use 3 different exercises for triceps, cable being my favorite. When working them heavy and the intense burn is there, I keep going and after 3/5 more reps, the burn subsides and I can keep going burn free. Further sets are then burn free.I can then add a little more weight and do even more. Should I keep going AFTER the burn subsides or should I stop during the burn. I dont want to hurt myself.
If Jay is recommending it, it is probably easier on your elbows. The guy knows how to stay healthy.
He actually says in a different video, be careful with these workouts, and try not to go too heavy as it will blow out your elbows.
Yeah, doing this exercise with dumbbells feels so much better on the elbows compared doing it with a straight/ez bar. Even if you go heavy still feels comfortable and no unnecessary elbow pain.
100% most important thing is to angle out slightly like he’s doing. If you go straight back you’re putting a lot of stress on the elbow.
Was legit just thinking of tricep workouts
Yes trt😮

How often were you increasing weight and by how much?
What cycle you on ?
How many pins a week ?
How would you compare it to dips?
Yup. It’s a great one
Jay is in great shape for a retired pro
He's going to compete again
He’s in great shape by any standard tbh
I was thinking the same thing. He looks great.
He will be competing in the Masters division when he hits 50
@@lancemanyon7645 He already told 100 times he 100% will not compete.
I’m 69. Bad shoulder. Started this routine. Love it, feel it, see it. Thanks
Keep it up man
*69? Nice!*
yeah you type like a grandpa too
you comment like a youngin@@yeeyee52
Keep it up
Started doing it recently and its now one of my top triceps exercise
This is no doubt the best tricep workout. An absolute must everytime I work my arms
This guys gym blows my mind everytime. So fkn nice
Close grip bench press on a slight decline is great if you have elbow pain
Thanks for all the advice and tips!
Triceps are so important for overall strength. This video has inspired me to switch up my routine.
Looking huge, love these pro tips, helps so much. Appreciate you Jay.
Just tried this few days ago and my triceps are S O R E!
Instant favourite! 👌💪
Having Jay Cutler do these videos and break down the exercise is a great learning tool. And an advantage. Thanks Jay
Nice definitely adding this one to my routine. (This is my 2nd year working out)
Jay you’re a legend, you look amazing bro - thanks for all these awesome technique videos - been using them in the gym and loving the help
Super underrated exercise. Rarely see people doing these
This is what mainly built my triceps
I see them all the time here and there.
Jay is a solid guy through and through. Very down to earth and friendly. Love watching all his free tips to help better our workouts.
The more movements you do the more elegant you look!
Great content as always! Thanks Jay!
Great to see the legend putting out these solo workout vids. ...fired up to hit the gym!!!
I love this, been doing at for so long now, best symmetrical growth for tri
Your videos are sweet and simple ,strait to the point !
I added this excercise to my routine 3 weeks ago. I feel better activation in my tricep than skull crushers
This made my day, I work out in an apartment gym. Thanks brother.
it's so epic to see this epic physique like Jay's Cutlers to get back in shape again! Keep it up legend!
I began using the dumbbell version a few months ago and you can definitely feel the stretch better and I feel a tighter contraction than with the bar, great recommendation
I've been dong it this way for years, feels so good on the joints and it works.
Jay has forgotten more about weightlifting than I’ll ever know, but that movement I stopped doing a long time ago. Skull crushers. Even with good form it hurt my elbows a lot and would leave me with pain.
this is fax. skull crushers and close grip bench press add so much mass to your triceps
I love these gym tip shorts
Wow i loved to do these for a while, super glad to see jay condone it
I might sound dumb here, but aren’t these just Skulk Crushers?
That's correct. These are "skull crushers" and a "French press" is a standing triceps extension.
Same thing
I actually think the dips and the overhead extension build my triceps but the french press are the third exercise I use every now and then.
Yeah I'm sure Jay Cutler has no clue what he's talking about.
@@andrewledford3865 I don’t think he was saying jay was wrong

Wow thanks Jay youre amazing i only have dumbells at home so this is very good!
So thick! You’re amazing, Jay!
Love this movement, its solid 💪🏼💯
Love this one especially cause this feels great on the elbow
Very comfortable move. Nice dumbells👌🏻
I've started to do French Press with one heavy dambell after Jay's advise in an another video of him. Inner head of triceps responded perfectly 💯 Thanks legend 👍🏻💪🏻
Thanks Jay. I will be implementing this at home!

That gym is horrible, most depressing place to train.
Gonna add this to the workout!
I love this one. So much easier on my elbows.
Im adding this 2 my routine. 💪I've done these before years ago.
Love these jay! Boston ma 👍💪
He makes those 35s look like 10s 😂
Best tricep exercise for sure!

I swear by this excercise. It blew up my triceps like crazy.
Love french press/skullcrushers, use camber bar is ideal. Do those and then tricep v handle(i think thats what you call it) pressdowns and all set
Awesome 🎉
This is great to mimic french press with dumbbells 😮
Sick music!🤘🔥
I love this guy. I want to meet him. He is the most humble guy in the sport.
Jay a true legend 💯
Tried yesterday my tris exploded. Love it
that form is IMPECCABLE
Number one exercises dips😮
I'm gonna try this. It looks safer than skull crushers too.
I am the biggest fan...so plz come to INDIA....
Do you have any recommendations for a slightly torn left shoulder rotator cuff?
Wow so good the gym I Love You ❤
Definitely trying this today..
How are these different from dumbbell skull crushers? Or are they the same just different name?
Hammer grip = Inner head
Palms down grip = Inner & Middle head
Palms up grip = Outer & Middle head
Been doing them for years and that's what I noticed when I started playing with different hand positions doing these with dumbbells.
these also get my forearm muscles pumped
You are boss always ❤😊 always legend
Jay is The Man! Thanks Champ!
This exercise really works great
One of my favorites!
Number one elbow destroyer. Overhead single dumbbell extension is better. But I do have a great long head.
I've always done these but on incline with dumbbells.. and my rotation of my wrists might be a little different but definitely feel it in the longhead of my tricep which is what i'm trying to do.. didn't know it was called a french press 🤘🏽 thats sick.
great exercise..... great contraction
Facts Jay💯💯💯💯
Best tricep exercise is the one you enjoy to do and do with the best form.
As you extend your arms and the triceps shorten are you also mentally squeezing them at the same time like flexing to burn them with each rep?
My first workout for my tricep it will be either the lying down skull crusher using the straightbar or ez bar, but the other day again for my tricep will be the other variation using the dumbell doing this exercise the lying french press,, it gives my tricep so much stretch thats why i build a good tricep and after the end the finisher will be the tricep push down.
French press is great but i prefer a percolation brew method like the v60
I love these..I feel like doing it with the dumbbells are slightly easier on the elbows..I work with heavy steel, hammering etc etc all day so my elbows can ache like a bastard with some tricep movements.
This is actually a dumbbell skull crusher, and I agree that it’s the best tricep builder.

I do rope extensions, but I really don’t feel it all that much tbh. Doesn’t mean that aren’t good or they aren’t doing anything, it just doesn’t give me the same feeling.
Pressdowns are the #1 most popular at any gym...Arnold's #1 favorite also
that doesnt hit the same head
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 thanks!
Can I suggest you superset these with kickbacks
French presses are guaranteed to give you painfully inflamed elbow joints. Rope extensions on a cable machine are optimal.
Is the french press the same thing as the skull crusher?
They look like skullcrushers to me.
Nah man... Skull crushers are hard on elbows... And even activate ur pecs a bit. This one the other hand is completely isolated triceps exercise that I personally felt have u the best stretch
French presses are standing overhead triceps extensions.
This is indeed a skullcrusher with dumbells
Love how Jay always says repetitions instead of reps
Isn’t that skill crushers with dumbbells?
Yesssur I love doing the French dumb bell work and yes it does work I've been doing those for a long time. 💪💯👍
I've doing this exercise for 9 months probably, and it seems great. However, I feel it is hard to increase weight. Is anyone feeling the same way?
I always feel something in my bicep when I do these
French press ? Thought this was called skull crusher.
I've always done these. Just a better move.
as a french person, i can certify that i am a press
Stop the press!
Just do with a slight incline on the bench and youre golden
Big jay 💯🥊
I aggree. This the best size adder for triceps
Added it. I usually do the barbell French when I do them, these definitely take some focus
I have a question for you regarding triceps. It might sound dumb.

3 heads. Overhead press - long head. Pressing down - Outer head (horseshoe) push or press away - inner head.
