I lift heavy and train hard. I've worked out at several PF locations in the US!. As long as you don't have a dckhead attitude with other gym goers, continuously slam the weights, grunting excessively loud like a corn star, not sharing equipment you will be fine. The only complaints I have gotten is footwear it was reasonable, (wore work boots instead of sneakers they asked me to stay off the machines). One didn't like that I had a gallon of water with me asked me to leave it in my locker.
Arnold was asked if he preferred dumbbells or kettle bells in his workouts. His response was "Your muscle doesn't know what you have in your hand" So Planet Fitness might not be what you're used to but you can probably make it work and your muscle doesn't know what gym you're at anyway.

Great video. So over the "let's get kicked out" videos. Glad to see a grown up doing a genuine review /test lift. Like you always say lift heavy be kind!
When you go thru life with a smile like this guy does people respond to it and usually drop any preconceived judgements. This video is an example of how just being a positive/nice person goes a long way. Cheers on you mate, well done.
True. Generally good to consider our own facial expressions and check if we're scowling hard without realizing it. 90 percent of the time that is what people react negatively too.
I've been a member at my PF for 3 years. There are other gyms in town that may have more features, but it's more about what you put into your workout, than where you train. In the last year I've put an inch on my arms, hit a 820lb 2RM on hip sled, dropped about 5% body fat, and have yet to hear the lunk alarm even go off. For ~$10 a month, it's well worth it.
It's not 10 dollars a month, they have annual fees and signup fees, so that they can pretend they are cheaper by having a lower monthly fee. They are a deceptive business and that alone is a good reason not to go there
Great video I'm a 67 year young retired natural pro bodybuilder I've been training at planet fitness since they're conception all over the country and in my opinion for what they offer it's the greatest value for your money. It's clean friendly and accessible 24 hours a day in most places.
It's refreshing to see someone genuinely being open-minded and making the best of the situation you're in. You offered some great advice for anyone entering a new gym environment.
I work out at Planet Fitness 5 times a week. I am not a bodybuilder, but i am fit and strong. You can get the workout you need at P.F. Definitely a great value at Planet Fitness.
No, I can't get the work out I need From PF. I'm 46 and I Deadlift 585, squat 450 and bench 325. Hardly impressive numbers for a male with 31 years of off and on again experience, but injuries and a physical job take their toll. So maybe you can do your little routine just fine there, but let's face it, PF wants stronger guys to go somewhere else, and their clients are intimidated by anyone stronger than a soccer mom.
Most folks at PF could care less about who else is in the gym.. Most folks are doing their thing and minding their own business. At 70 yo and a light weight I can assure you that I don’t care who comes to the gym, no one is watching you….maybe you wish they were.
@@notsure1783well you are a power lifter with a very specific training programme. If you're a casual lifter or even a bodybuilder to an extend you can easily make it work
I have had a PF membership for years. There are guys who have clearly been involved in the sport for many years. The are always super friendly, ALWAYS willing to share their knowledge, and always willing to help me correct my form when I ask for help.
I'll be honest. Initially, I wasn't a huge fan of you, on a competitive (fan) level. Your attitude and content has proved me wrong. Love the message. Keep it up.
I used to work out at planet fitness and only left because of the dumbbells and no barbells. The environment and equipment were really nice. I would say for a younger, single guy, this is the gym for you. People here are a bit less serious about their workouts and more likely to start talking to you. For guys wanting to meet girls, this is the place. I am married but also observant.
who cares about the other people if they are serious of their workouts. I didn't pay for a gym to see if people are serious of their workouts. When i go to gym i am focus & serious of my workout only. Stop looking at other people if they are serious. Focus on yourself.
@@Bitcoin_GoldI didn’t read the OP’s comment as a judgement. Seemed to be indicating that you’re more likely to be interrupted during your workout, as there are more novice trainees.
This was solid. Not everyone can do this, but if you are a late shift person, PF is a lot more laid back after 10pm. Im someone who used to lift pretty heavy. You can absolutely get in the best shape of your life at PF with a little modification. The dumbbells only going to 75lbs kind of sucks, but just do more reps and slow down your cadence.. or prefatigue the muscles doing something else before you hit your set. There's always a workaround.
Thanks for this. I got a membership at a planet fitness near my house and started going back in March when they first opened. Thanks for the refreshing perspective and the advice on how to get the most out of the equipment they have.
The little video screen that literally shows you how to use the machine is so cool. Usually there's a diagram but sometimes that's not good enough for depicting proper technique.
This was absolutely terrific! Without ever having been in a Planet Fitness gym I always thought it would be a "non-workout workout" . You've certainly changed my mind.
I like my Planet Fitness. It's well staffed, the equipment is in good shape, it's always clean, people are polite. There are some crazy strong people who work out right next to grandma. I love it
Yup you can make weight feel heavy by doing super slow and controlled reps which is actually better for bodybuilding anyway but def not so much for strength building, power lifting where the goal itself is moving heavy numbers.
Nice to see an adult doing this video. I'm 66 yrs old and have been working out in different gyms since I was 18. PF works for me because now. I'm just trying "not to let the old man in". If everyone there was as massive as Mitch, like I use to see at other gyms in the past when I was trying to become as big as they were, I would quickly loose my motivation to work out at all. Although your tips are extremely helpful and I don't have to bother your workout in the gym to get them. Outstanding work Mitch.
One of the great things they do offer if you get their back card membership, is it allows to use any of there gyms across the country. So if you're road tripping you can always get a work out in, or if you are overlanding in your vehicle you have access to a free hot shower. Overall its really not a bad gym
I find it funny men can't wear tank tops but women can wear skin tight spandex. Back when I was going the girl at the counter stopped me from going and and checked out my shirt. It was just a shirt with the sleeves cut off nothing over the top. Meanwhile a girl walked in and I could see her camel toe and nothing was said to her 🤷🏽
Can confirm overnight employees don't care. I workout at midnight, I don't drop weights or grunt but I do carry my bag around and have a gallon jug of water.
@@MB-vi8zp I have workout in the mornings at the same one I go to at night. There is this mean old lady, everyone hates her. She hit me with the lunk alarm because after I was sprinting on the treadmill and got winded, I was breathing to loud. She said I couldn't wear a tank tops and my water jug was too big. Not bragging but I'm easily the biggest and fittest person in there. I do competitive bodybuilding, I think that's why she is always up my ass.
Only reason I go there is because once or sometimes twice a week I get stuck in northern VA for work and have 2-3 hours to kill, otherwise I would never go there.
“Cater to the environment you’re in”… That statement is such a gem 💎 that has clearly been abandoned by today’s society. It should implemented in all aspects of life.

Great video. Also love the focusing in the background being blurry to make sure that even if you get someone in there, you're respecting their privacy. I'm probably going back into the gym for the first time in a couple years next month. See if i can get back to being able to do a pull up tbh

16:53 - You are correct. The first machine is more of a fixed pulley. These just allow you to redirect the direction the weight is pulled. You still need to provide the full amount of force to move it. The second machine has more of a compound or block and tackle pulley which is giving you a mechanical advantage allowing you move heavier weight with less force.
Great stuff. I work out at Planet Fitness and love the atmosphere. Plenty of weight for my 81kg physique, but I appreciate you showing how to work with what you have.
I have been to more than 60 PF locations. The primary problem with PF is not the equipment (or the almost never used lunk alarm, lol), it is the demographic it attracts because it is usually the low cost provider in a market. In small remote areas the demographic is fine, in large urban areas it is the default gym for rif raf, that trash the locker rooms and gym. Good point about the difference between a block and tackle and simple pulley system, every PF has one pull down cable that is a simple pulley, never understood why they have the one outlier. And the equipment models will vary from gym to gym, newer models will have more weight in the stack. There are tricks to hack the older machines to add more weight.
The yelling isn't necessary but the dropping weights is for safety. When you do the set to failure, the muscles cannot control the movement to place the weight on the rack or floor. Dropping the weight prevents injury.
@@RP-16 There is a lot of space in gyms. The weights are not being thrown, they are being dropped straight down to the floor. No one should be right next to someone lifting. The risk of injury is greater when not dropping the weight when working to failure. With that said, this is for free weights, machine weights should never be dropped as it can damage the machine.
I train at a Planet Fitness because it's the only 24 hour gym where I live that isn't ridiculously overpriced - and I have to travel for work occasionally, so with my membership level I can use any PF. There are things that frustrate me about it - mainly from an equipment standpoint, notably not having some things I would like. However, I can get a good solid workout in - and in a strange way, the lack of some extra pieces of equipment that would be available in some gyms means I can get much better at the basics. Some machines don't go heavy enough - others I wonder why they go as heavy as they do, oh well. I have found that not all Planet Fitness locations are created equally. Some have heavy stacks on their cable machines, others stop at 95 lbs. Some have dumbbells up to 95, others stop at 75. Some have machines that while being pin loaded, mimic the movement and motion of plate loaded machines - especially for pulldowns, shoulder press and incline chest. There are also some really jacked regulars in the planet fitness I go to, so you can definitely get a good workout in them with the right plan.
@@bdegrds Agreed. There are plenty of good machines but in my almost 4 years of lifting now, almost every movement I have trained has felt much better in the freeweight variation, which makes it hard to get fired up over a machine only gym. This will not be everyone's experience but denying beginners freeweights is probably planet fitness' biggest mistake.
@@hooktraining3966 they’ve been so wrong they are the most successful gym chain in the country….they aren’t denying beginners anything. They are providing members a a certain type of gym.
@@bdegrdsThey have dumbbells just not barbells so you can still use freeweights. And there are some extremely jacked dudes that hardly if ever use freeweights, they aren't necessary by any means. Though I understand from a personal preference if you prefer them then not having them is definitely not great for a gym.
My push day is almost identical to what you've done here (I go to PF) and seeing a pro strongman doing the same workout really validates my program for me. Good to know I'm on the right track.
The reason i go to snap fitness over planet fitness is dumbells up to 100, a squat rack and bench press. The owner of the one I go to even brought in 110s. I have been working out for 5 months and i already press 80s in a 12-14 rep range. Being capped at 75 would not feel great for me. Also smith machine benchpressing is hard on my shoulder i perfer barbell benchpress. I can see planet fitness working for some people but i am happy i have other options.
With overcoming isometrics you don't need heavy weights but still create high stress and stimulus. For example, if you a towel put it over you back and have you had holding down where you can only move half way up in a push up. If you use 80% or 85% of you max pushing strength to try the breakthrough for 3-5 seconds. The recovery is amazing and it is easier on the joints also.
I am a former PF member. Here's my criticism of PF. They don't do enough to educate members about gym etiquette. My #1 pet peeve was: people lounging on the seated machines while doom scrolling on their phones. This is particularly frustrating during peak hours (weekday early evenings.) Or somebody who is hoarding a machine for 30 minutes to do 5 sets all at one go with minutes long rest breaks in between sets. Nobody wants to harsh someone else's groove by asking, "Mind if I work in a set?" Do one f'ng set, wipe it down and move on, especially during peak hours. #2 pet peeve: nobody reracks weights. Nobody wants to run around the gym to find where that special weight denomination has gotten to. Or to pull 350 lbs of weight off the Smith machine before you can use it. #3 pet peeve: complacent security - showing your membership barcode on entry seems to be optional. How many of those people working out on the floor are really members? I had my locker broken into and $200 stolen while I was working out during peak hours. Now admittedly the lock was an inferior luggage combo lock that I bought at the front desk but I'd hate to think a legitimate member did the deed. Last complaint: NO SAUNA. Sauna has a legitimate physical fitness claim because studies show it promotes the body's production of human growth hormone. I never want to belong to a gym again that doesn't have a sauna. Am I too judgemental?
I agree with the cell phone and weight racking, but I find this at other gyms as well. I am at the point where I now just go up and say " How many sets do you have left" which usually gets them moving. Also, women grabbing up 3 or 4 sets of dumbbells, dragging them off somewhere, then not putting them back.
It's the same here in Australia, yes it seems that the signs are directed at me but the atmosphere itself is great. And the equipment is actually pretty nice, I realise that it wouldn't have served the purpose of the video but a band could easily have added to the chest press by running it from one handle, behind the seat and to the other handle, after asking staff it was ok to do that of course, it would be an easy way to add some load without adding stress to the cable
I trained at PF for over 2 years, and I got very lean. (Also, I lost my job, and PF was in my budget) When I get employed again, I'm definitely going back to a hard-core gym ( GYMU in NYC). Thank you, PF, for making me lean & tight.💪🏋♀️
PF in america is funky , when you come to the PF in South Africa it is an entire different vibe, no purple, no lunk alarm , ALOT of free weights , you have all body types ranging form beginners to people who are definetly not natty...just weird
Mitch, very good video. You showed how you can still get a very good work out at Planet Fitness even for very strong people. You did it respectfully and adapted to the environment. You weren’t purposefully trying to get kicked out. You did a very good and fair review.
It’s insane only they can judge. I went one time in Boston when I was visiting family never again. They didn’t like the jug of water and they said both my headbands were possible gang so I couldn’t wear it. I didn’t know hulkamania headband and camo was gang related lol
@@shane_rm1025 aka working hard and actually lifting... i could never hit up planet fitness, would get kicked out right quick for training to hard (like that's a bad thing)
I really appreciate your attitude and approach to things. The LHBK philosophy is awesome. You seem like a genuinely good man, not just a strong man. Well done sir.
The cable weight isn't about changes in direction, it's about whether or not one of the pulley wheels moves up and down when you pull the cable. You could make a cable go around an infinite amount of fixed pulleys, changing direction an infinite amount of times, and it wouldn't change the fact that pulling it one meter would lift the weight one meter. A moving pulley wheel, on the other hand, will cut the effective weight in half because you have to pull the cable twice as far as the weight will move. I work for a shop that makes material lifts and most of them are rated at 500 lbs. and have normal pulley systems. One of the models is rated for 1000 lbs. and it has a pulley wheel in the platform that moves up and down. This is because it would be really hard to hand crank it up with 1000 lbs. on it. By having a pulley wheel on what is effectively the weight stack, it makes it feel half as heavy but takes twice as long to crank up.
Exactly - additional pulleys only affect the weight if they travel with the weight, and for gym equipment specifically, ratios besides 2:1 are pretty rare, so for keeping track of lifts it's almost always simple to figure out where to set the stack at different gyms: x or 2x.
Thank you for going to Planet Fitness! I recently went there to work out with my Marine boyfriend. I began working out about 2 months ago to strengthen my back and to lose weight. I found it a little intimidating at first but then changed my self talk and told myself that I have just as much right to be there as others. I also reminded myself that no-one,only my Marine, knows what I have been thru health wise. 1 major car accident that left me disabled and blowing out my ankle...1 plate and 7 screws later I am walking! The only downsides I found were the people who sat on the machines playing on their phone and not being able to have my bag with notebook and gloves in it. Liked and subscribed. Thanks again.
Mitchell, you are a truly nice guy. Unlike 99 % of the social media fittness influencers who show up to PF acting like dicks and being treated like they act. The other people there are very nice and respectful.
That planet fitness I went to that few times, cool to see someone makes a video on you tube about it. World Gym still more of my scene as it has a room where i can cool down and stretch.

Hey Mitchell, regarding the physics of pulleys... I'll try to keep this brief. Static pulleys (don't move when the cable is pulled) do not decrease the force required to lift the weight. Dynamic pulleys (move with the weights when the cable is pulled) halve the apparent weight. So if there are 4 pulleys, but only two of them move it cuts the weight in half twice. The reason is that dynamic pulleys cause the cable to move a farther distance than the weight. So your limbs move the same distance, but the weight moves less, which requires less energy.
I use PF because I get a free classic membership through my employer. Most of the barbell exercises I do can be done on the Smith Machine. I have outgrown the 75lb dumbbells, but I just do more reps or sets.
Well, its ok if one who considers themselves non-judgmental does the judging for the sake of determining who they should judge in order to keep it a judgment free zone. I think that's what they're going for...
Literally haven’t been judged at a planet fitness been going there for 10 years. The only thing people seem to complain about is a little sign that obviously mandated from corporate. If you can’t handle the little sign on the wall, maybe stay at home.
Its nice to see someone give actual tips on how to better use the equipment that is there. My social anxiety isn't gonna see me in any 'more serious' gym any time soon.
A note on the cables - The Work done when moving anything is the weight (force) of the object times the distance it’s moved. Or, Work = Force * Distance (W=F*D). A change in direction doesn't actually change the force needed to move the weight (if anything, it slightly increases the force since there will be some friction in the pulley) So, when a cable goes around a pulley which is fixed in place, the force changes direction but not magnitude. But Michell is spot on about the pulleys where the attachment is in the center of the pulley. When this happens, the weight attached to the center of the pulley moves only half as much as the cable. So Fc * Dc = Fw * Dw (Force and Distance of the cable and weight) Since the cable is moving twice as far as the weight, it you’ll need only half of the force to do so, thus, it feels half as heavy as the actual weight.
It was great seeing the mutual respect between both sides at the start. The owner looked like he fully appreciated what you was trying to do instead of just assuming your going to mess around
The reason I don’t like planet fitness is the following: They say it’s an “all inclusive environment “ but the single out people who like to train hard and who are above average in strength, if you lift heavy you don’t belong at planet fitness is basically their motto so I don’t think they should be praised at all. On the other hand making it safe and enjoyable for new gym folks is amazing but a lot of gyms do that so I feel like planet fitness needs to rethink their marketing. Great video !
I train at planet fitness and there's never been any judgement to people lifting heavy. I think it depends on your location. There are plenty of bodybuilders at the gym I go to.

As long as you treat people and the equipment with respect, there are no concerns about getting kicked out.
Bravo. I'm 58, and still train like I did for high school athletics: the basic lifts + functional movements. To save $$$, I joined Planet Fitness for about six months. And I managed to stay jacked. You've just got to adapt and try new things! Many ways to skin a cat. I'd recommend PF to 95% of the populace. Great atmosphere. Friendly employees. Cool members. It's clean AF. PS. I moved on to a gym with a fully-stocked weight room. Costs more, but worth it.
Just get a 24 ounce water jug and refill it. It is not difficult to do, unless you can not do simple math to figure out how many 24 ounces equal one gallon. In that case, keep track of how many jugs you drink and use a calculator.
For the physics bit, the basic equation is an application of the Conservation of Energy: Work In = Work Out, where Work is Force times distance. In brief, a small force acting for a large distance translates into a large force acting for a short distance! The cable system in the machine is a Block and Tackle. For more information on this, I highly recommend "Basic Machines and How They Work," which is very inexpensive as a paperback and can be found online as well

The biggest reason, aside from wanting to be a bit more serious about lifting, that I left PF, was due to them fining me for wearing a sports bra that did have thick straps. I had no idea, at the time, that they wouldn't allow bare shoulders. They were at least, nice enough to get me a shirt to wear over my sports bra. I just embarrassed for being called away from my workout in front of a gym full of people.

Most folks at PF could care less about who else is in the gym.. Most folks are doing their thing and minding their own business. At 70 yo and a light weight I can assure you that I don’t care who comes to the gym, no one is watching you….maybe you wish they were.

Nice to see an adult doing this video. I'm 66 yrs old and have been working out in different gyms since I was 18. PF works for me because now. I'm just trying "not to let the old man in". One of the great things they do offer if you get their back card membership, is it allows to use any of there gyms across the country. So if you're road tripping you can always get a work out in, or if you are overlanding in your vehicle you have access to a free hot shower. Overall its really not a bad gym

While discussing the Lunk alarm and whether to wear a tank or not, there was a guy walks past in the distance in a tank lol right around 6:25
You can wear a tank at planet fitness
Personally love the no yelling or no loud dropping weights. That shit is pointless.
The yelling isn't necessary but the dropping weights is for safety. When you do the set to failure, the muscles cannot control the movement to place the weight on the rack or floor. Dropping the weight prevents injury.
@@Hunters_Dawn that just makes the environment more dangerous for others.
Have you ever pushed past failure? Sometimes you gotta yell through it , then drop the weight . Just once. I workout at home though

Yep. Sam Sulek often trains at PFit…..you can get a workout no matter who you are.
Without freeweights the workouts will always be second rate, I personally couldn't get motivated for that
@@bdegrds Agreed.

My push day is almost identical to what you've done here (I go to PF) and seeing a pro strongman doing the same workout really validates my program for me. Good to know I'm on the right track.
Happy to hear!
I see this gym every day,I go a different gym and feel I could recommend it to people! Thanks so much😀🏋️♂️
I am a former PF member.
Bro it's always women grabbing like, all the 10 lb and 5 lb plates in random zones and dropping them off everywhere 😂@@kevinnelson9716

That was cool to watch! Had to share with my 24 year old son who is heavy into lifting and will enjoy this as well!
It's just basic ratios, functionally no different than a gearing system in a car or bicycle. Strange to see people confused about this.
Exactly - additional pulleys only affect the weight if they travel with the weight, and for gym equipment specifically, ratios besides 2:1 are pretty rare, so for keeping track of lifts it's almost always simple to figure out where to set the stack at different gyms: x or 2x.

@@SeyaDiakite7Show it to us, when ready
Hey Mitchell, regarding the physics of pulleys... I'll try to keep this brief. Static pulleys (don't move when the cable is pulled) do not decrease the force required to lift the weight. Dynamic pulleys (move with the weights when the cable is pulled) halve the apparent weight. So if there are 4 pulleys, but only two of them move it cuts the weight in half twice. The reason is that dynamic pulleys cause the cable to move a farther distance than the weight. So your limbs move the same distance, but the weight moves less, which requires less energy.
"Safety " is key word of avoiding lawsuits due to injury
I use PF because I get a free classic membership through my employer. Most of the barbell exercises I do can be done on the Smith Machine. I have outgrown the 75lb dumbbells, but I just do more reps or sets.

Lol pf is introverted asf.. I love it
A note on the cables - The Work done when moving anything is the weight (force) of the object times the distance it’s moved. Or, Work = Force * Distance (W=F*D). A change in direction doesn't actually change the force needed to move the weight (if anything, it slightly increases the force since there will be some friction in the pulley)
So, when a cable goes around a pulley which is fixed in place, the force changes direction but not magnitude.
But Michell is spot on about the pulleys where the attachment is in the center of the pulley. When this happens, the weight attached to the center of the pulley moves only half as much as the cable.
So Fc * Dc = Fw * Dw (Force and Distance of the cable and weight)
Since the cable is moving twice as far as the weight, it you’ll need only half of the force to do so, thus, it feels half as heavy as the actual weight.

So drinking out of a gallon water jug will get me banned? Wow, this is more ridiculous than I thought. 😂
It won't.

I also didn't know that you had a UA-cam channel but you have a new subscriber now.
💪🏼😎🤜🏼🤛🏼🙂👍🏼
Planer fitness judged us we were not lifting heavy or making noise. They just didn't like our workouts. We were alternating on machine and lifting between because there where 3 of us. They came up to us and said we had to leave . And our memberships were canceled we had been going for 3 years. And Jason had been there for 8. We wernt allowed to ask questions just told to leave. Crunch fitness is better . Ty Planet judgementness 😊
Buy equipment. Workout at home.
@@fjccommishDon’t tell me what to do.
I canceled PF because of they allow whatever gender one identifies with to use the locker room they want.
I love my local PF. I joined as soon as it opened (6 years ago). Never regretted it once. It's far and away the best deal on the 'planet'.
type of gym "telling people not to be rude, by being rude themselves as they tell them"
Fun with Physics presented to you by Mitch Hooper, WSM (and great guy). 🤘😎
You got “fined?”
@@PurpleHeart-gh6sv Yeah they charged my account for breaking the rules.
That is bullshit.
@@junoleigh6302as someone who works at PF, i dont know what the hell the staff were smoking on because that’s not how that’s supposed to work.
yes you would be warned about it (something that even I think is a stretch), but unless you’re a repeat offender they’re not supposed to charge you. even if you are a repeat offender, you usually just get kicked out the gym. that shit sounds shady af
Seeing the locations and realising again that Mitch is from my hometown is crazy.
most judgmental judgement free zone.
yeah... pretty hypocritical
I’m 75 and not in great shape. My insurance pays for Planet Fitness and I am always comfortable there. It’s very clean, has just been remodeled and the employees are nice.
It's all about the staff. I lifted heavy (for me) at a PF early in the morning and never had any issues at all for several years. The guy at the desk was super chill.
Planet fitness is a parody gym 💯
I love PF.
Extremely clean. Never had any issues. Everyone minds their own business. 👍🏻
Pizza Planet!
Baby reps!
But why would that be a bad thing though? I would love to be able get some pizza from my gym.
Definitely a bonus
They don’t do pizza or bagels anymore since the pandemic
@@reneaguilar1000 yeah but they're stuck with the stereotype now 😁😁😁😁😁
