- How to manually retoppo a high poly scan from Polycam to a clean low poly model with Instant Meshes and Blender. *Different technique from my last tutorial
Process:
- import Polycam scan into blender
- Edit Mode / Mesh / Cleanup / Merge by Distance
- Go into shader tab, remove normal map, then replace image texture with albedo
- Use Boolean intersect modifier with a cube or simple mesh to cutout desired object(s)
- Sculpt and delete unwanted geo (experiment with different selection methods and views)
- Once happy with mesh, export obj and bring into Instant Meshes
- Retoppo in Instant Meshes and replace obj with quads low poly obj
- Play with vertices of low poly version to fit perfectly 1:1 with high poly mesh silhouette. May have to model with the extrude and bridge tools, snap and merge vertices, etc.
- Add new material to low poly object (if one doesn't exist already)
- In edit mode shift select, double click to get entire line, and mark seams using the edge menu. Watch a UV mapping tutorial for best practices.
- Once your UV map is readable in 2D, add a tiling UV texture to the low poly mesh material to check if there's any poorly UV'd surfaces.
- Using cycles renderer bake diffuse texture with Select to Active (first shift select the low poly model, then the high poly model), then set Extrusion to 0.001 m and Max Ray Distance to 0.01 m. Note, these values only work for default Polycam scale, if you resized it, you have to tediously experiment with values which takes a looong time to get right.
- Wait 5-30 minutes (depends on resolution and complexity) for texture to bake. Save baked texture in texture paint window, or hit Alt S
- Use clone stamp tool in texture paint mode to clean up the texture, then save as you go.
- You're basically finished. Pat yourself on the back, you've successfully retopologized a photogrammetry scan in Blender!
