I love Star Trek so god damn much.
Both are superb and different. Star Wars is grand space fantasy, a brilliant morality tale with pure themes of good vs evil. Star Trek is thoughtful sci-fi, a superb story of exploration with an optimistic vision of the future. No need to deride one in order to prop up the other. Neither Star Wars nor Star Trek require any kind of public defense. The fanbase they both enjoy, the decades and decades of success they've both found...that cannot be argued against.
I can agree with Tyson, I like star wars more, but I get it.
College Humour said it better than anyone one else with: Star Wars is like philosophy for children.
I'm gonna steal this comment hahah
UH OHH A STAR TREK NERD!!!!
😂😂😂 best comment ever
They are obviously both fiction. I think he is correct in terms of what he is looking for between the two. I agree with him star trek does adhere more to basic principles of physics even though both use a bunch of hogwash language to bridge the gap of actual science
Yet Star Trek has inspired more scientific exploration and invented more devices in use today compared to Star Wars. e.g., cell phone technology, tablets, medical devices, etc.
Amen. What I appreciate about Star Trek more is also the philosophy: in Star Wars good has to win but there is always a heroic fight, meanwhile in Star Trek, while there is no shortage of bad guys and epic space battles, usually the best outcome is when the weapons fall silent and negotiations and peace can follow. To quote a UA-camr whose name I don't remember, Star Wars is about winning a conflict, Star Trek is about resolving a conflict.
Star Wars is not trying to be based in physics. It is a style of visual art and large scale metaphorical story telling. I love Star Wars my whole life and I discovered Trek at age 20 and I really love Star Trek too but for very different reasons. I am a visual artist and I personally have more passion for Star Wars because of that.
Favorite Answer... Probably the best too! I was the same. Loved Star Wars as a kid, didn't get into Star Trek till I was 22 and instantly became addicted. As a visual artist I'm sure you can appreciate Star Trek's backgrounds, sets, lighting, etc... but Star Wars does Viz Effects on a whole different level. ILM much? (Industrial Light & Magic)
Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of the best known Astrophysicists in the world is more in to the SCIENCE-Fiction Genre of Star Trek than into the Space Fantasy World of Star Wars?
Who would have guessed?
Love em both.
star trek happens in our universe star wars happens in a different universe so our laws of physics may be different or nonexistent in the star wars universe
I mean galaxy
+Manuel Iñigo the laws of physics are constant across all galaxies
The laws of physics don't change from galaxy to galaxy
As far as we know.

Who are you responding to?
I agree with Neil, I love Star Trek franchise stronger 😍🤩🥰
I love Star Trek so much for too many reasons to explain.
Sta Trek "pays attention to the laws of physics"
ROTFL!
Only Trek has... 'Cracks' in the Event Horizons of Black holes (Re. Star Trek: Voyager)
+Dan Gutridge "First get your physics straight then bend it at your leisure" ekhm ekhm-parsec-unit-of-time-ekhm
Dan Gutridge you can't say that is inaccurate because we have very little knowledge of black holes, but we do know that magic doesn't exist
"but we do know that magic doesn't exist" i find it very amusing that some one named harry potter is the one to say that.
Shabbernigdo Xingjian, using names are not a valid source of evidence.
THANK YOU!!!!!!
Thank you , I saw him once
Someone, please tell me what that black globe s behind Tyson!
This man is genius he likes star trek and brave to go with it. So im thx God.
I like Both series.
I haven't watched a single movie or series of star trek ever
Watch one.
It's good
Star Wars is a space fantasy why can't it be just that
Star Wars is an American epic space opera media franchise, centered on a film series created by George Lucas.
It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away".
The franchise began in 1977 with the release of the film Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope in 1981), which became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon.
It was followed by the successful sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); these three films constitute the original Star Wars trilogy.
A prequel trilogy was released between 1999 and 2005, which received mixed reactions from both critics and fans.
A sequel trilogy began in 2015 with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The first seven films were nominated for Academy Awards (with wins going to the first two films released) and have been commercial successes, with a combined box office revenue of over US$8.5 billion, making Star Wars the second highest-grossing film series.
Spin-off films include the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) and Rogue One (2016), the latter of which is the first in a planned series of anthology films.
The series has spawned an extensive media franchise including books, television series, computer and video games, theme park attractions and lands, and comic books, resulting in significant development of the series' fictional universe.
Star Wars holds a Guinness World Records title for the "Most successful film merchandising franchise".
In 2015, the total value of the Star Wars franchise was estimated at US$42 billion, making Star Wars the second-highest-grossing media franchise of all time.
In 2012, The Walt Disney Company bought Lucasfilm for US$4.06 billion and earned the distribution rights to all subsequent Star Wars films, beginning with the release of The Force Awakens in 2015.
The former distributor, 20th Century Fox, was to retain the physical distribution rights for the first two Star Wars trilogies, was to own permanent rights for the original 1977 film and was to continue to hold the rights for the prequel trilogy and the first two sequels to A New Hope until May 2020.
Walt Disney Studios currently owns digital distribution rights to all the Star Wars films, excluding A New Hope.
On December 14, 2017, the Walt Disney Company announced its pending acquisition of 21st Century Fox, including the film studio and all distribution rights to A New Hope.
He forgets that Star Trek has time travel which is impossible according to the laws of physics.Especially in the past.
Check out tachyons...can actually go forward and backwards in time... black holes are real...who knows what's possible?
Black hole is real and Einstein's theory of relativity is real. So according to laws of physics its possible in theory but cannot be tested in practical..You know the clocks on the satelites needs to be adjusted daily to sync with us.. why do you think that is ?
Trek ≥ Wars. Reply with anything, upvote, or done vote my comment if you agree.
Fun fact: George Lucas is a trekkie
The thing is Star Wars isn’t about physics it’s not Sci Fi it’s Fantasy so you can’t really compare the two
startrek is a standup comedy
He’s an actor, not a physicist.
Rian Johnson ruined all that. The arguments in the bar after TLJ have gone way beyond plastic lightsabers and he has now turned the Star Wars franchise into a political movie that has successfully divided people it used to bring together.
Star trek is scientific accurate and star wars its about religion and politics
How about if our lives is about to merge those two together
He is right in his point .. star wars is just space fantasy...or fantasy in space .. while star trek is sci-f
but StarTrek is nothing more than utterly lamer , made up and senseless technobable throwing terms arround trying to get cientific while ignoring most known laws of physics
I'm surprised he likes either of them considering there both inaccurate as heck. I always assume all the yale level scientist dont even bother with science fiction.
If Star Trek fans would rule the world they would be constantly comparing their ships to everyone else saying their phasers are more powerfull than nukes, their shields infinite and they would beam torpedos to the enemy ship reactor..

i like cheeseburgers!
