3:30 - Just like Wil says that he invented a series of buttons to do each specific operation on the ship, William Hartnell, the first Doctor in Doctor Who said that the children would notice whether he was hitting the same buttons each time he did something, so it was extremely important that he remember, and that Patrick Troughton learn it (as long as they had the same console).

Neil deGrasse Tyson is now my favorite scientist. Heres why: He is literally the High-Lord Supernerd. I felt like I was stepping into a conversation between myself and my friends about this sort of topic.
Yeah people bash on Neil because he does so many "celebrity" type projects so they say he isn't a "real scientist". Really though they are just jealous that a dude that is that smart also has the personality and charisma to captivate audiences when talking about just about any topic. In summation--Neil is da man.
MrPoster42 Exactly. Any scientist can go out and do a talk about mindblowing jargon-heavy scientific concepts, but it takes a certain personality to be able to explain these concepts to laypeople, and make it accessible and easy to understand, AND interesting to listen to. NDT has that personality, watching his videos, watching Cosmos and suchlike, it does what 5 years of secondary-school classes failed to do: It makes me interested in science and want to learn more!
MrPoster42 Yeah, they said the same thing about Carl Sagan. How dare they try to bring some understanding of science to the mostly scientific illiterate masses....lol.
ShadowIsatis static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/One_of_us_745.jpg One of things that I like about this event is you can tell that Neil is "star struck" being next to Will just as much as Will is being next to Neil.
I am still trying to get my sister to understand that we OWN the words 'nerd' and 'geek' now. This was a lot of fun. And those other three people? I like their ability to jump in, be funny and not disrupt things.
One idea that Neil has expressed in multiple interviews over the years is that people have a general interest in science but between schooling, testing, and their everyday lives, their desire and passion to learn gets essentially beaten out of them. Finding new, interesting ways to get people to pay attention and have a discussion/open their minds to science is important, and segments such as this can go a long way towards doing that. Having comedic relief (in my opinion) can also make these ideas more accessible to the common viewer. It is nice to know that you don't have to be a scientist, or even particularly smart in order to have a discussion and start thinking about science. Science doesn't always have to be serious discussion. Perhaps the first step into getting someone interested in science again is to make it fun and accessible. So for all of the people complaining about the comedians on Star Talk, you really need to get over yourselves and just enjoy the show.
Iif you want more people to read your stuff, put some empty lines between paragraphs. This block hurts my eyes! That said, I think you are right, however I felt like 30 minutes was wayyyy too short for Wheaton and Tyson alone, so I understand why everyone is so annoyed by them.
(A huge fan of Neil, and really everybody on stage), loved it. I thought it was kind of funny that Neil didn’t break it down and explain to Kristen exactly what a light year is 😄. When I don’t know something, I like it when somebody talks to me like a little kid. 😊 It helps one to understand
*Sigh*... It would be nice watching this without the 3 people to the left. They brought extremely little to the conversation. I imagine Will sitting there facepalming in his thoughts throughout most of the time they opened their mouth.
8:40 Ho ho hold on a minute! I've got to TOTALLY nerd out here... What Neil, bless his heart, describes is NOT warp drive. No sir-ee bob. What he is describing is technically more of a "jump" than what propels one of our favorite spaceships along through space. When you hear in a sci-fi show that they are performing a hyperspace JUMP, they're doing what Neil is describing. What a warp field does is more akin to squeezing a watermelon seed between your fingers. The engines actually WARP space (and time? help me out here, guys...) around the ship such that it literally squirts it forward very quickly. Which is why they can go faster than light and not reverse age or something like that. They are literally in a bubble of Space/Time scooting along. In a weird way they aren't really even moving. And as warp engines got more powerful (over the series) they began to be able to make that effect larger such that they reached to their destination more quickly. But whatever. There ya go. A "jump" and "warp engines" are not the same. Thank you and good night. :P
Yeeeeaaah and that's what I was saying. Yes, the Spacing Guild in the Dune universe used a form of folding space like Neil described. Just like any other sci-fi story where the travelers "jump" across a gap of folded space, whether it happens instantly or takes a short period of time to do so. And your point is? heh, heh. ;) :P
aerowerks Also, yeah, "warp" is sometimes used synonymously in some sci-fi with "jump". Hence, probably the confusion. But, regardless of what any ooooooother sci-fi stories out there use to get their crews to travel long distances, what Neil described here is NOT how the Enterprise (NX-01,A,B,C,D,E or not bloody any of those letters) travels. :)
I was about to comment on that, my good sir, but you saved me a wall of text. Thank you *very* much for the precision. Nerd. (This is not an insult, you know that, right? hehe)
Évelyne Lachance I know it's not an insult! ;) I was actually laughing out loud as I was typing because, well, that's what us nerds do! We have this habit of expounding on things which, to others, have no real purpose or "real world" goal. It's just what we do... ;)
This was hilarious!!! I love Neil deGrasse Tyson. You can see how passionate he is about science. I would love to have an opportunity to sit and chat with him.
Also, just realised, we got Kristen Schaal and Neil Degrasse Tyson onstage together, and this is before they worked together on Gravity Falls as Mabel Pines and Waddles the pig!
Wil is a funny guy, but he also is enough of a science geek that he understands most of what Neil is saying, so he can make relevant jokes. The 3 comedians are like "I know most of those words, but I don't get how they have arranged them."... one of them thought a light year was a measurement of time.
I absolutely loved this! I am not smart enough to be a part of this group. But apparently, I am enough of a science/Star Trek fan to get all of the references. I felt like I belonged! 😊
The impression I get was that the whole segment was rushed. There was a strict 30 minuet window and there was just too much to cover. Take away the 3 comedians, (who I though were okay) and you would still have a ton of material with just Wil and Neil. Just too many people on stage for the time allowed.
I got the impression that warp drives worked by creating a bubble around the ship which wasn't quite fully connected to the surrounding universe. It created a new frame of reference, one in which the speed of light is not exceeded by the ship, even though the bubble itself (not being matter) is able to exceed the speed of light. Thus the ship effectively moved at many times the speed of light without ever breaking light speed.
I love this video. So funny. I had no idea Wil was so engaging. And I like the comedians there as well. Made it even more entertaining. This is the 3rd time I've watched this.
I love stand-up comedy, and I think all three of these comedians are funny. They did what they were brought there to do. I'm just baffled as to why they were brought there to do it. Wheaton and Tyson are charming and energetic enough to carry the show. Having Mirman, Tompkins, and Schaal there felt a little bit like having jugglers at a spelling bee.
I love this!!!!! Everytime Kristen Schaal or Eugene Mirman speaks all i can picture is Louise and Gene Belcher and it the greatest thing I have ever watched!!
Just wish I was smart enough to hang out comfortably with these two and be able to contribute to the conversation. I'd bring nothing to that table, but boy would I enjoy the show!
Apparently I have to correct what Neil said about traveling across the galaxy. people in Star Trek never traveled across the Galaxy (except by accident - Voyager). Even going across a quadrant of the galaxy needed warp drive in order to not take forever though.
The thought that Wil did not finish (I think he was going here) is that the Prime Directive on Star Trek meant you could not go to the past and alter it in such a way that it would change the future (they actually broke this rule all the time). But by existing in our time, Star Trek may have altered the future by presenting inventions that inspired us to invent them, thereby altering the future [cue Twilight Zone music].
I was thinking the opposite. Had it been Neil and Wil only, it would have been awesome. But the addition of the other three, whose sole purpose was to interrupt every explanation with nonsense was so very distracting.
Been to this theater many times, just across the I-5 from the Univ. of WA. The Friday and Saturday Midnighters are legendary. Film Noir ... to be sure. First place I saw Rocky Horror performed by audience members, complete with props.
+Brandon Blume The man is brilliant... combine a carismatic actor with all geekness and you get Will... I'm not a Star Trek fan, but I find him brilliant
that would be because he understood about 95% of what Neil was talking about, and had amusingly relevant anecdotes where the comedians were like "I know what a microwave is."
I have not seen Toy Soldiers, I went to wikipedia and searched the film immediately after the reference at 2:19 or so and now I really want to see that movie. Sounds interesting and with several fine actors. Yet another step in my personal film appreciation class I put myself through. Thanks Eugene Mirman. For not only being funny but challenging my mind. Plus I hope i spelled his name right because that was from memory.
The BEST Star Talk has have ever seen!!! The author of Tom Swift Sr said "if man can think it, it can be done" or something similar.. See any of those books and you will about everything he imagined in use today. And don't forget Tom Swift Jr ✌️❤️😀
Lol the "So this time Patrick and I did the thing..." Reminds me of when Mica Burton mentions "Uncle Pat" [record scratch] "You mean Sir Patrick Stewart." "Yeah, uncle Pat."
i know this way posted in 2012 but what is weird is that 2 of the comedians are voice actors from bobs burgers, and when i listen i see them as the characters.
As I understood the warp field made a space where the speed of light was far greater than it is in normal space. His theory of wormholes was not till DS9. This also explains why some regions of space were damaged by warp fields. Spacetime was warped by the field and did not just "snap back".
It's Star Talk...they get somewhat famous comedians and sciencey people to talk science and laugh...that's the premise, get over it. Yes, sometimes the comedians aren't hilarious, again, get over it. It's a great show, but you don't have to watch it if you're just going to complain about it. It's a big UA-cam out there, lot's of videos to watch, go watch them if you're going to complain.
I think it's pretty obvious why they invite those comedians. They don't want their audience to consist only of "hardcore science nerds", so they make it more lighthearted and entertaining. And it works... ;)
+Connor McKee People are allowed to express their discontent. Get over it. You don't have to read the comments. Get over it. There's plenty of other comments on UA-cam you can read and enjoy. Again, get over it.
+novusvoss It more likely has to do with the fact that more people know who various B-level comedians are, like Kristen Schaal due to her numerous Daily Show appearances, than they do A-level popular scientists, like Brian Cox. Who do you think would draw a bigger crowd of viewers on UA-cam and in a theater: Amy Schumer or Brian Greene? The answer therein is why they have comedians. Skeptics Guide to the Universe is mostly doctors, IT people, physicists, NASA engineers as guests, etc.; actual professionals in scientific and mathematical fields, and amazingly enough they somehow manage to also be funny while being informative.
+Connor McKee Nobody mentioned anything. But if you don't like the freedom of speech, you can always sign up for Mars One, or migrate to Raqqa. Sometimes the trollary is entertaining, but it doesn't add anything to an excellent conversation, except brainfood for the brainless. There, I said it.
Dang it Neil, you are wrong about warp drive AGAIN. A "Negative Mass Field" (which is a concept in theoretical physics that is technically possible to create) is configured in such a way that the field forms a "bubble" of "warped spacetime" around the ship. This "warp bubble" is controlled in such a way that it locally contracts space in front of it and expands space behind it. To put it another way, space itself is warped: Within a LIMITED area of the bubble, the warp field condenses space in front of the ship, or "pulled" closer together, to the extreme. Then, the space behind the ship is expanded, or stretched back to its normal density/normal state. Imagine a very long red carpet that was placed on ice. Laying face down on the carpet, you use your arms in front to pull and wrinkle, or "contract" the carpet towards you, then using your feet and legs to push and un-wrinkle, or "expand" the carpet behind you. Thus, you traveled a certain distance on the carpet by moving the carpet under you like a treadmill. This NOT the same as Neil describes in the video. His description involves folding spacetime to connect two separate, extremely distant points of space with a wormhole. It's a totally different concept. In the case of the long red carpet, it'd be like taking one end of the carpet and folding the carpet over till it touches the other end and then using a knife or needle to poke a "hole" through both ends, representing a wormhole. Here are some links to further explain the warp drive that Miguel Alcubierre developed as a theoretical model. It is a more advanced, "flushed out" version of the exact same physics concept that Gene Roddenberry wrote into the ship technology of Star Trek: phys.org/news/2017-01-alcubierre-warp.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive Neil has, somewhere along the way, misunderstood what warp drive is. He is constantly using either his tie or a piece of paper to fold spacetime and connect two points of space with a wormhole to explain what warp drive is and its misinforming his listeners.
I haven't read all of the comments, so forgive me if this was already mentioned by someone else. At 14:20, they start talking about the Holodeck but their first assertion is incorrect. The Holodeck was not an original construct of The Next Generation. It was originally seen in the The Animated Series episode "The Practical Joker" as part of the "Rec Room." Since it was seen on the Enterprise in TAS, it was always there in TOS, it just wasn't shown on screen in any of those episodes as it wasn't directly relevant to any of those stories. According to Wikipedia, "This feature was originally proposed for the original series but was never used." Presumably, it was never used due to budget and/or special effects restrictions.
Wil Wheaton and Dr. Tyson were awesome and entertaining. The comedians were pointless and annoying, and actually made this less funny every time they talked.

Wheaton and Tyson are charming and energetic enough to carry the show. Having Mirman, Tompkins, and Schaal there felt a little bit like having jugglers at a spelling bee.
Star Trek is a foundation for the future of technology. I think it is great that it has such an influence.
Holy shit I couldn't be on this show....I'd constantly tell people to "Stop *$#&^@@! interrupting me!!!!"
I get the feeling that the whole segment would have been more inspiring and interesting if the left side of the video was removed... :/
I fail to understand their purpose participating in this video.
Gottogetbetter
missing the point of this, this is supposed to be like random comedians and science minded people in a casual convo; i think its great
cbilljones The "comedians" are "like" not amusing except perhaps the woman on a few occasions.
I kind of feel sorry for them - they are completely clueless about the conversation, but they're desperately trying to be relevant.
While I disagree with you, I felt that Will & Neil were much more entertaining than the comedians.
FYI:
VISOR = Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement
You can dramatically increase the quality of the talk by skipping all comments from the left side.
This was fun : )
Neil embraced indigo, Wil forget about those footballers, Kristen got a lightyear, Paul unstable, Eugene the last laugh
This made me completely anxiety free for 33 mins. Thank you for that.
I was thinking the opposite. Had it been Neil and Wil only, it would have been awesome. But the addition of the other three, whose sole purpose was to interrupt every explanation with nonsense was so very distracting.
"We used to build telescopes just to look at visible light, in the universe..."
"--fools."
LOL

By far the very best Star Talk in the history of .... ever!!
Been to this theater many times, just across the I-5 from the Univ. of WA. The Friday and Saturday Midnighters are legendary. Film Noir ... to be sure. First place I saw Rocky Horror performed by audience members, complete with props.
VISOR is an acronym for "Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement"
Wil Wheaton is all kinds of awesome times 47.
+Brandon Blume The man is brilliant... combine a carismatic actor with all geekness and you get Will... I'm not a Star Trek fan, but I find him brilliant
Little Billie Horton from the star wars is great - Yeshmin
how will wheaton can consistently make better jokes than professional comedians...
that would be because he understood about 95% of what Neil was talking about, and had amusingly relevant anecdotes where the comedians were like "I know what a microwave is."
He's a LOT smarter. Wesley Crusher has nothing on the real Wil Wheaton.
And don't forget Tom Swift Jr
✌️❤️😀
A bit annoying watching this with those guys interrupting Neil.
To paraphrase Oliver North's lawyer, Brendan Sullivan: They are not potted plants.
The Milky Way contains between 200 and 400 billion stars and Neil is on first name basis with a lot of them.
i like how Will mentioned how star trek has actually influenced science....like it did in the history of the orville
Two of my favorite people together talking about my favorite things! Star Trek and scienece Yay!
"...and I am doing a set at Stand UP MRI"
Bravo Mrs. Schall. Bravo!
I live in Seattle, how did I not know this was going to happen? Why was I not there? Fail on my part.
just love how everyone has to talk over each other
Anyone else wanna party with Dr. NdGT ? Dude seems like he'd start getting into some strange universe-sh!t about 2am
REV J he would be great to smoke with
Lol the "So this time Patrick and I did the thing..." Reminds me of when Mica Burton mentions "Uncle Pat" [record scratch] "You mean Sir Patrick Stewart." "Yeah, uncle Pat."
Awesome! Thank you for the upload, very fun to watch 😀👍
i know this way posted in 2012 but what is weird is that 2 of the comedians are voice actors from bobs burgers, and when i listen i see them as the characters.
same
The first guy one the left looks like he should stay away from burgers for a while.
god damn those 3 on the left ruined this entire video
Set phasers on mute.
Hey, that's Ron Burgundy
I found them pretty funny, especially Paul F. Thompkins.
They kept the conversation grounded and entertaining.
VISOR: Visual Instrument Sensory Organ Replacement
Wil Wheaton was my first crush, and I'm proud of that. He ended up being fucking awesome.
As I understood the warp field made a space where the speed of light was far greater than it is in normal space. His theory of wormholes was not till DS9. This also explains why some regions of space were damaged by warp fields. Spacetime was warped by the field and did not just "snap back".

Door Gag: Season 2, Samaritan Snare 28mins into the show. You're welcome :)
Thanks! 👍
I have to say this is the first video I watch where I like Whil Wheaton. In this video I find him charming and funny.
"Some people think that is how Rick Santorum was formed" I fell out of my chair...that was hilarious! The Star Trek chat was the best!
And it works... ;)
novusvoss agreed
To put it another way, space itself is warped:
Within a LIMITED area of the bubble, the warp field condenses space in front of the ship, or "pulled" closer together, to the extreme.
It is a more advanced, "flushed out" version of the exact same physics concept that Gene Roddenberry wrote into the ship technology of Star Trek:
phys.org/news/2017-01-alcubierre-warp.html
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive
Neil has, somewhere along the way, misunderstood what warp drive is. He is constantly using either his tie or a piece of paper to fold spacetime and connect two points of space with a wormhole to explain what warp drive is and its misinforming his listeners.
Ok
Am I the only one who understands what LCARS is?
I thought it was brilliantly distracting. It's like eating your veggies, and ice cream, at the same time.
Reference to Geocities and web rings. Old timey web stuff!
Why are these other 3 people there? Every time they open their mouths I yell at the screen "Shut Up! Stop Interrupting!"
Whaaaat? I seriously can't hear you!
@@goggletoggle1294 r/woooosh
I wouldnt mind if they werent saying super retarded things half the time.
22:20 Please edit them out.
Yes, please explain the jokes, because explaining jokes makes them funnier.
