  • How to fix a leaky outdoor water faucet fast and easy.
    One of the viewers brought this issue to my attention: The big nut is 1+1/8" and the smaller nut is 7/8" but this is just on this manufacturer and yours might be different. You can get away with using pipe-wrenches, adjustable wrenches, vice grips or even the closest metric sizes you can find, as long as they're not too tight.
    Thank you for all the kind responses, the thumbs-up and especially for your time. It's truly great to help so many people and help save them money in these crazy, uncertain times.

    Thank you for a very helpful video, especially the parts where you zoom in to show detail. My husband is disabled and not able to help with these kinds of repairs. I’m trying to learn as much as possible so I don’t need to call a repairman. This was perfect for me and now it’s all fixed, thanks to you!

      I'm glad to help Shirley.
      Most common jobs around the house are not physically difficult. It's more about using common sense and having the right tools. This is what's great about UA-cam... video makers are saving a lot of people a lot of money and jobs that might seem difficult are not hard at all. In many cases the professional repair people aren't doing much more than taking advantage of the home-owner's ignorance.
      Peace

      @Shirley Ellison Brown my husband passed away years ago and I’m having to do the little repairs around the house that I can. I can’t afford hiring a plumber for every little thing so UA-cam channels like this I have saved me in many ways. Unfortunately I am disabled myself so doing things that need to have hand strength is very difficult for me. Fortunately using a little leverage is key.
      So far I got off a stuck hose end from my backyard spigot and now I see the handle is dripping a little. I tightened it up a little bit so when the water is off it doesn’t drip. Although I know I am either going to have to replace the washers or the whole spigot since my house is older than me and that’s old.😂
      Please know you’re not alone. I’m without a husband and my only son isn’t close by and has a demanding job with little spare time. So we will learn together the things we can do.
      God bless you and this gentleman who posted this video so clearly.🙏🏻❤🙏🏻

    Thanks John! My faucet was simpler, I only had one nut to deal with. I had done the replacement a long time ago but forgot the procedure, this helped a lot. Only the small one on the back needed replacement. Before heading to the hardware store, I checked my collection of rubber seals and to my delight, an old seal from the kitchen faucet looked identical so I gave it a try and whadaya know? It worked! I like saving a trip. Also before I reassembled the faucett I put a light bit of a product by Permatex called anti seize, it's an aluminum colored muck so I if I need to repair the faucett again it will come apart easier. The replacement seal was marked "OO" These old faucetts needed the seals changed more often but they are relatively easy to do. Think about that before someone talks you into "buy a new one." I have done it plenty of times with the kitchen, shower and outside faucetts. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Hi,
      Yeah - the right tools are everything: Especially auto repair and some jobs are simply not possible without some specialty tool you're probably only going to use once or twice in your life. This is where renting the tool comes in handy.
      The problem with outdoor faucets is: they're in the weather all the time and the weather does an incredable amount of damage with rust, dirt and seizing parts together. Even with the right tools it can turn a 10 minute job into and all-day stress-fest.
      Thanks for your time.

    • @JohnDisque
      @JohnDisque  2 роки тому

      Hi Ronnie.... The best thing I can say about this is: it helped a lot of people at a time when money was tight.
      At the time I published it there were other videos on UA-cam about this issue but many of them took forever to get to the point.
      It's a common problem for home-owners and it seems like it would be complicated or difficult. My job was to simply show and prove that it's neither complicated or difficult and they CAN do it for a couple dollars in 15-20 minutes tops.... which saves them roughly $200 per faucet on a plumber.
      It's all about giving the folks what they came for.
      Peace

    Thanks for this video. That's some legit useful DIY info, because I have a leaky hose faucet on the patio that I now know I can fix myself. It looks simple enough and shouldn't take too long. Having a pro plumber come out and do it is just not economically practical anymore at the prices they charge. I have a dripping laundry tub faucet, too... I'll be looking for videos on how to tackle that one as well.

      I have leaks in the same areas as you. Outside hose spicket and laundry tub faucet leaking at base. Thought it was the washing machine leaking but it was the tub faucet. It leaks nonstop even when not using the faucet or washing machine.

    • @JohnDisque
      @JohnDisque  4 роки тому +2

      @@adam1984k It's all basically the same concept, Adam. You have water constantly pushing against the outlet (faucet) 24/7.... Something has to stop it from getting through and that's the job of the faucet...
      If water is getting past the faucet then you have to turn off the water getting-TO the faucet, disconnect the faucet, take it apart and see why water is getting past the faucet.

    There are a lot of different, fancy and freeze free outdoor hose bibs on the market today, but few can beat the utility and durability of an old solid brass hose bib. Fifteen minutes of your time and a dollar's worth of washers or bonnet packing and you good for another five to ten years before you need to service it again. The original outdoor faucet on your older home will usually last the life of the home for 100 years or more. The only necessary practice is to turn the water off inside and open the outdoor faucet before the winter freeze.

    I did one today. Mine is one nut for all. My problem was the top nut had a crack in it. I had an extra stem. It wouldn't fit. The thread pitch was wrong. I had an oddball 5/8" 20 thread top nut, not 1/2" pipe thread. Nobody had a 1/2" die. I had to bypass the stem and cap it off. I added an inline valve to turn it on & off. If it goes bad, I can turn it off in the basement. The basement was fully finished with the pipe in the wall. No way to change it out. I made an offer to my neighbors to install a frost free faucet if I can try their faucet where they wasn't using. Didn't work out. Just about every faucet was different. None of the parts interchanged and I put back 3 that I tried. Stuck with a mini lever on the side below the faucet.

    • @JohnDisque
      @JohnDisque  2 роки тому +2

      Sounds like you had to get creative. So you put a hose on the faucet and added a valve in the hose or in the pipe going to the original faucet?
      The Frankenstein system doesn't work with all things - I'm restoring an old Craftsman compressor and you can't get the parts anymore. The parts for other compressors just don't fit and it was purposely done so people couldn't fix them and had to junk the old ones and buy new ones. Auto-manufacturers are notorious for doing this.
      It is what it is.
      Good job in sticking with it.
