I was about to call a plumber and was gritting my teeth for the expense. Tightened the packing nut, no more leak!! Thanks so much. 65 years old and happily handy here.
When using a wrench to tighten the hose connection, don't squeeze the clamps more than you need to just hold the connector and make it turn. If you squeeze too hard, you can bend the connector "out-of-round", which increases the probability of leaks.
2 different issues here. Washer at the hose connection is always missing or rotten washer. Easy. Water spraying from the stem is almost always loose packing nut that a half to full turn of the wrench fixes. Worst case is new packing or replacement of the hose bib. My experience with apartment maintenance. And contracting. Im a licensed California contractor. Good video and thank you
I always tighten the packing nut just enough to stop the leak and then cycle the valve shut and then back open. Over tightening the packing nut can lead to so much friction that the stem will actually shear off.
Both my outside spigots were dripping. Fixed them both in 5 mins thanks to this vid
Thank you it's been doing that for 5 years and it's really bothered me. People like you making these videos make the world better.
Suggestion: When tightening a fitting, use another tool to counter the rotation rather than stressing the pipe or mounting hardware.
Tightening the nut worked! I’m a 75 year old woman with just an adjustable wrench. Thank you so much!
dude, I bought a house 2 months ago and I've been watching a ton of your videos thanks bro
Awesome, congrats on the house and best of luck on all the projects 🙌
My hero today is you. The loose packing nut was the absolute problem. Thank you.
Tightened the packing nut did the trick. Thanks! Now the timer is set and lets see how it goes.
99 percent of the time it's the packing nut
I agree
I thought I was facing a major plumbing project to replace both my outdoor hose spigots that were leaking. After watching this, it was about a 30 second fix to just tighten the packing nut. No more leaks. Thanks Scott! Really appreciate your videos.
Hey Scott,
I normally go out every year around March to change the washer inside the stem and also replace the washer that belongs to the hose and to the vacuum break connection. Doing that each year to make sure that we have no issues or no leaks.
Had a leak and was going to follow your advice, but it turned out that the leak disappeared once I turned on the faucet all the way. 😐 Lol
I thought I was going to have to replace the whole thing. Thanks for saving my Saturday!!
...well it was simple as that...1/8 of a turn and problem solved.... Thanks !
Yay!! I just fixed my years-long leak by tightening the packing nut!
I couldn't really afford to have someone come fix it. And I was afraid to deal with it. I could envision breaking off the pipe in the wall and creating a real huge mess for myself. Thanks!
That’s what I worry about as well.
I love how thorough you are and how clear your videos are ... thank you
Good grief. I've had buckets under 2 hose bibs collecting the dripping water for 3 years. I saw this video, grabbed a crescent wrench and fixed them both in 2 minutes. Thank you! Gotta love UA-cam videos. A plumber would have charged me $300.
I just tightened the nut under the turn valve and problem solved!
A strap wrench will help prevent marring surfaces and leaving marks that can cut the hand of the user.
Channel Locks should be the last choice.
Oh my goodness, thank you for this video. I almost called the plumber and then saw this video, leak fixed by tightening the packing nut.
Those nice knipex pliers are chewing up the fittings. I like to use the flat jawed knipex pliers for things like that
Unless it's chewing up threads or sealing surfaces (or wrecking the nut to the point you can't get a wrench on it later) it really doesn't matter. Properly adjusted cobras or crescents will still be gripping in a roughly parallel manner. It's only superficial damage.
I made a quick tighten and I am leak free. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Just tightening the nut was it! Looks like many others as well. Thank you!!!
I was expecting a major project. This video saved my weekend. Just tightening the packing nut did it! Thank you!
Always nice when projects are easier than expect. Just wish that happened more often 😅
Hi, First, thanks for the info.
I have a question if you wouldn't mind answering. My hose attaches directly to the spigot. That anti siphon part, Im unfamiliar with, and is it necessary to have. I don't have one. My leak is at the faucet area. I did try white plumbers tape, but it still didn't work, and I have a good rubber washer in the hose.
Thank you!
An anti-siphon device is a good idea anywhere (i) contaminated water could come into the supply lines due to reduced pressure in the supply lines or (ii) connected lines might freeze (such that the anti-siphon valve acts like a DWV vent and facilitates draining, like in an outdoor hose).
The leak you described might be due to a worn seal or mineral build-up near the valve seat. (I assume it's not a ball valve.)
My packing needs replacing. The problem is, I see no way to remove the handle. The screw holding the handle isn’t a normal slotted, Phillips, hex or any other removable type. It is just a smooth dome shape. I’m not even sure it’s threaded into the stem. I’ve considered grinding the head off, but I don’t want to chance destroying it since replacing the faucet would be a large pita for this 80+ year old man. Any advice?
I don't know if you've done the repair by now, maybe not advisable with these pesky outdoor hose bibs. Depending on how much room there is around the screw, you might be able to carefully cut a slot in it using a Dremel tool with a cutter wheel. Then back it out with a slotted screwdriver. That's a trick best used in non-plumbing work.
Exactly what I needed to know, you made me look like a genius to my wife, thanks!!
WOW THAT WAS MAGIC! Saved me lots of time and $$$ thank you. Grateful!!
Happy to help!
Leaving the garden hose attached to the bib then over tightening the washers leads to problems. Just keep the hose off when not in use and dab plumbers grease on the washers to keep em from cracking and getting hard.
I needed to re-pack and tighten the bonnet. But my issue remains. I actually have water leaking from the anti-siphon valve, which is on the top like the brass fixture you show. Not sure how to tackle that one 🤔
Check the end of this video. I will point you in 3 different directions depending on the type of leak. 👍
Thank you it's been doing that for 5 years and it's really bothered me. People like you making these videos make the world better.
Thank you for the quick fix. I tightened the Packing Nut and it stopped dripping. It is harder to turn it on and off. But it stopped dripping. Wow.
My faucet looked like a small fountain whenever it was turned on. I was expecting a fix to require replacing the entire faucet. Searched online for a guide to repairing or replacing the faucet and found your video. Tightened the packing nut and no more fountain from the faucet. It's also good to know you have a video on how to rebuild the faucet when it reaches the point where tightening the packing nut no longer works. This was a simple fix, but it always feels so satisfying when I fix a nagging issue like this.
How dare you call those Knipex Cobras "channel locks"‽ Balderdash!
Oh man, no doubt. I am sure Knipex would not be happy. I used to work for Caterpillar and and hated it when people would call a skid-steer a "Bobcat" 😂.
Packing nut was loose like you said. Keep the stuff coming. Thanks
Thumbs up for your work & thanks. Tightening fixes it for me, essentially always. I think I replaced the packing material 13 years ago when we bought the house. We also use a quarter-turn valve for everyday use, so that the main valve is opened and closed once or twice a year.
Fabulous! I will try tightening the nut. I hope that is it!! Wonderful
🤞
Incredible…. I fixed mine just as you said, tighten it! Thanks a lot. I was about to replace it unnecessarily.
Always nice to find a fix that is easier than expected 👍
I just did this yesterday. I tightened the packing nut and leak stopped m
Nice!
How does Scott always seem to know what I need to do tomorrow on my "honey do" list?
Was able to stop mine without even buying any parts, thanks 100x
Just the packing nut here .. frustration came to an end in 3 seconds 😂
bless you, for making this video, saving me the headache and ruining my foundation, each time I turn my water hose on water is licking and even dripping to the basement. My Son had to search on youtube on how to fix and found you. you saved us money, time my poor foundation of my home wow. thank you so much!!!
I was keeping a bucket under hose to catch water for years 😂
Thank you so much stay blessed
Excellent! Thanks for getting to the point quickly.
Every spring, I have to fuss with the packing nut on my Prier frost free faucet. I used a Sharkbite FF faucet on my other outlet and no issues . I always replace rubber washers with new every spring.
Very good instruction... this old woman is going to try without calling a plumber! thanks.
I had one just a couple weeks ago that - after using it for the first time in months, when I turned it off it was leaking bad/practically squirting from around the stem/packing nut. I went ahead and tried my hand at desoldering and soldering a new one in its place. A tip that I learned the hard way was that using MAP gas instead of regular propane made all the difference!
This may be a weird question, but I'm wondering if hose splitters play a role in exacerbating spigot leaks?
I have a leak behind the faucet handle on an outside spigot that seems to worsen when I have the hose splitter on (and when it's not on, sometimes there is no leak behind handle).
Is this coincidental, or is the hose splitter something, that by design, will exacerbate a leak? note: the spigot is a frost-free, anti-siphon type that is only a year old. I've used a repair kit to replace gaskets, etc. on the stem, but still have the leak.
OMG!! Thank you for this info!! I had 2 outdoor spigots that leaked from the knob and this fixed it!! Hitting that Sub button!! Thanks again!!
I'm watching this, because, and because I'm pretty stoned out of my mind right now. Great tips though!
😂😂😂..good idea!!!
Good video. Can you do a video showing how to fix a water hammer issue caused by a irrigation timer connected to a hose bib? I have tried using those water hammer arresters from Amazon and they don't last. Maybe you know a way to correct this issue?
Mine leaked when turned on out of the handle. Tightening nut didn't work.. turned water off and Replaced the rubber washer in my spigot/faucet with Mainstays 42 Piece Rubber Home Washer Assortment $5 from Walmart fixed it!
my house is 100 yrs old and outdoor faucet looks very old, older then any outdoor faucet repair on youtube. Mine is leaking from the packing nut and that nut is frozen, cant tighten or loosen. I will make a second attempt but afraid to put to much pressure trying to loosen it, dont want to break it. In the basement my faucet is soldered in, if it was the screw in type Id just go buy a new faucet from home depot and screw it in like I did at my moms house. Ill let it leak before I call a plumber lol, it only leaks when the water is on.
My valve for the shutoff outside that is in the basement is starting to leak. Actually green corrosion from the copper holding it together but I think I am going to have to get a plumber in here for that. Also need a new commode. Trying to save up enough money to do it all at the same time because they charge $120.00 just to roll a truck out. It's ridiculous. $80.00 it used to be was ridiculous.
I have the option you held up in your right hand my anti-siphon valve is chrome-colored not brass but it seems to be leaking or dripping at that packing nut right after the handle
Tightened packing nut and in 5 sec the leak was fixed. You guys will put plumbers out of work! Bu t THANK YOU!
Great video!
I’ve actually had to put a twist or two of the resin packing cord in there and that fixed it but thru the years I’ve had to do other things as well. I take care of 4 houses so, it’s always something!
Your friend,
Barry
Thank you! Tightened up the packing nut (took 30 seconds) and stopped a leak that’s been bothering me for years!
Mine is Fusan anti siphon asse-1019, it is dripping. Do you have any idea where I can buy the fix kits including the washer on other end of the stem? Thanks!
Hi Scott. My house has 40 yr old faucets that have been gery-rigged. Can you point to a video that walks me through a complete faucet replacement? Thx Karen
That BP vacuum breaker isn't always that easy to get off. It is either bent or the set screw is broken off to prevent removal. You should point this out or people won't be able to get it off. Tightening the packing nut usually fixes the stem leak. If not, you just put a new packing on as you mentioned.
Thanks for All the Awesome Informative Videos.....👍😎
You bet, happy to help!
I have a question! I’ve been watching your videos because i have an outdoor faucet with a vacuum seal with it, the issue is that my Spicket is extremely hard to open and close and I think that it may just be corroded or there is a lot of pressure in it .. can you get any advice ?
LOL I guess I'm stronger than most I just reach up there with my bare hand and twist it on never had a drip or leak. I'm talking to the guy that says used to wrenches. One hold the other end. Haha that's funny. Great video by the way has always I love your videos. The comments are entertaining also. Haha
I have a leak which appears to be where the spigot attaches to the brick wall. It only leaks when the water is turned on. I accidentally left the water on with one of those hoses that has a valve to shut off water at its end. The valve was closed. This back pressure and leak lead to the whole basement flooding. Any simple advice or should I just call a plumber?
I have turned the outside shut off years ago.
Opened outside.knob.
The hose hasn’t been hooked up in years .
I have a few drops of water.
I am from Canada, do I do it now in December, or wait until it’s warner out?
I don’t want to have water inside my house either.
I have a bib whose packing nut constantly gets loose and leaks. I use a 3/4in wrench to crank it tight again, stopping the leak but within a few weeks it is back to dripping. It is maddening. It is under a covered porch so it is not like the sun is heating it up, then cooling at night to get loose again over the days. I'd replace it but the builder did not put an access panel behind it, so 3/4in wrenching it is.
The flat rubber washer seal (or square O-ring) needs to have a flat metal surface on the male threaded connector for the rubber to seal against. Modern faucets and hose ends have evolved to no longer have this necessary sealing surface. I make a bushing on my lathe to install into the male thread ends to give the rubber washer a mating surface and secures a proper seal.
The water leak between the spigot and the hose at my pool deck has become a big puzzle to me. What happens is that I have a hose repaired with a mender hose connector (those metal hose connectors used together with a metal clamp). Whatever I have done, water will squirt out between the spigot and the hose connection as well as the connection between the hose connector and the hose. I have a new washer on the hose, I have tightened up tight (and also tightened up only a little) the connection between the spigot and the hose connector, I have tightened the hose clamp on the hose, and I also have used Teflon tape on the thread of the spigot. I just don't want to spend money on a new water hose with the connectors in it as I am not even sure if a new hose would have the puzzle solved. Any advice from anyone would be appreciated.
Sir, the leak of my outdoor faucet is only when you open the faucet. The leak stops when you close it. What is the problem?
great video. is there a sequence to tightening the packing nut and the other nut below it? I pulled the handle out, it’a round like in the video. and at the internal tip is a rubber seal that is held on with a screw. the seal was deformed and chewed up. replaced the seal. but when tightening everything back there is a minor drip leak. maybe the seal is slightly too big? or is there a sequence for tightening? thanks.
I have a fourth issue- copper is too soft on a very old faucet. Need to replace. I would but I’m worried I’ll create another leak I can’t see. Got a video for that?
Tightening the packing nut worked for me. Both outdoor faucets were leaking on a 15 year old house.
Just replaced washer at the back.. second time in 2 months.. maybe 3... what else could be going wrong to cause the leak
Mine is still leaking through the packing nut, and I tightened to the point where you could barely turn the knob and the water still came out of it. Do I need to replace the whole thing?
Modern outdoor faucets don't have packing nuts anymore so if they leak it's going to be from the actual gate valve and you didn't show how to address that
I have an old spigot I need to replace AND relocate higher up in the foundation so that I can correct some negative slope in the yard. Oh well, what's yet another hole in the foundation?
I really like the silicone hose washers sold by Lee Valley. They compress easily and get a good seal. I've been using them for a couple years and they seem to last and stay flexible. Great videos by the way, thanks.
Hey John, thanks for the feedback 👍
Putting a new (like the one you used) washer into the hose connector failed to stop the leak. Is there another easy to fix problem?
I can't believe I've had this huge water spraying issue for years and all i had to do was tighten the nut......
So my leak is coming from where the faucet meets the shingles and it’s not even a leak per say it’s like sporadic water pressure Bursts
What is the function of the small screw located on the top portion of the vacuum break fitting?
Tightening the packing nut 1/64th stopped my leak!! Thanks!
I may try to get a new gasket for my hose because my leak was coming from the hose faucet connection and it was bad. I mean I was soaked by the time I finished washing my car
I have an old brass 2-way splitter and a new one. Both of them leak like a sieve. What am I doing wrong?
This solution worked GREAT!!! Thanks for the Video
When you dont connect the water hose, there is no water come out leaking. But when i install the water hose back , it leaking . What happen?
If the outside spigot is leaking will I hear water running by the water pressure pump in the garage???
Hooray!! No more handle leak! I had been thinking I was going to have to sweat off the soldered faucet and replace it. It is a non-standard size too. Much thanks! 👍👍👍👍
After putting the oring it still leaks for me, do you suggest putting in teflon tape ? Thank you so much !
Is water coming from the vacuum brake normal when you shut the water off righty tighty?
What would cause water to spray from the 2 holes in the piece the knob attaches to ...while the water is on ...thanks!
At 2:02 he refers to "this guy." What's that part called? I need to buy one.
I can't pull out the stem inside out. The video everyone shows is not showing how they actually take it out
Many thanks. Fixed two leaking faucets in < 10 minutes. 👍
Just tightening it fix my issue. But I do need a washer for the freeze part of it or whatever that was the air gap.
I tightened the packing nut and it stopped, but it got a lot harder to open the valve. Did I make it too tight?
