An error from Ryan here in the idea that Gimli expected Moria to still be a going concern. Gimli expected that Balin had taken Moria, after the events of the Hobbit, thousands of years later. The fall of Moria, and the existence of *something*, not necessarily a Balrog, known as Durin's bane, was well established.
Plausibly, Ryan meant that if the Balrog were 'known' at this time, then Gimli would not imagine Balin's colony would be a success, but if Gimli knew, Balin would know, and would not have ventured the matter. Ultimately, the comment doesn't make sense in this interpretation.
Fundamentally the premise in LOTR is that *something* happened, and that 'something' is lost to history. Given the extreme depth of time, this is consistent with ... well, nearly anything that is not observed by 'immortal' (or as Tolkien would have it, co-longeval with the life of Arda) characters.
Massive error made about the fall of Moria and its state through the years It’s quite clear from this video the guy has not read the books and that tarnishes his credibility in opinion
Yeah Dain ironfoot saw it after killing azog
Well in the books Gimli didn't really expect Balin to have succeeded. He knew Balin hadn't been heard from in many years and was not surprised by the state of Moria the way he is in the movies.
@@jakedixon448 was trying to be (and this is no criticism) slightly gentler than that. I do very much enjoy Ryan's videos, by and large, but I would caution him on commentary of this sort, which requires a very detailed knowledge. I would not say that the video suggests not having read the books (LOTR, at any rate). There's a lot in there and I could believe that someone who has read LOTR and Silmarillion more than once could get this wrong. I am something of a completionist, and expect only a handful of commentators satisfy my Niggling mind.
Mirkwood wasnt Mirkwood (it was a pleasant forest called Greenwood) until Sauron immigrated to Dol Guldur after he was defeated by the Last Alliance.
Also, Sauron never touched the elven rings, so he didn't "give them" to the elves. Canonically this is important.
@@collinhawkins4857 thats some of that 'great writing' people are so happy with. they all want LOTR, but not the way it was originally written.
@@tooslow4065 I hear you, but these corrections were for the video, not necessarily the series.
You are right but greenwood was precedent to all of that , I think people even some well versed lore fans just use Mirkwood all time due to habit . But with time compression it’s not stupid to have oropher and Isildur living at same time
@@tooslow4065because the book sucks. It's a musical
Small thing but Ryan said twice that it's been 3 years. Season 1 was released in September of 22. It will be a little less than 2 years when season 2 comes out.
Thank you. I felt super old when he said that, and now I don't feel quite as old.
Thought that it hadn’t been that long👍🏽
I came here to say this. S1 ended 19 months ago - I wouldn’t even quite call that ‘almost 2 years’ ago
❓❓❓
I still hold out hope that the Stranger is one of the Blue Wizards: Alatar and Pallando! 🧙♂🧙♂
I hoped too but that "always follow your nose" comment was pretty...on the nose
Ditto m8
@@elib7502 Ha! True. 👃 However, those references could simply be meant to indicate he's SIMILAR to Gandalf: that he's a fellow Wizard.
Well they did both go east to Rhun, so fingers crossed.
Also, the people hunting the stranger in season one said “he is the other“. The other what? My money is on the other blue wizard.
Sauron didn't help making the THREE rings. "They were never touched by him"
Thank you…. Seems like the main thing anyone making a video like this should be aware of 😵💫
Exactly
Technically, no-one made any rings. You guys are getting your panties in a bunch about fine details in a fictional story about the making of some rings. This isn't history, it's make-believe.
Is it not correct that 16 were made for the elves before the three that Celebrimbor made with the knowledge to do so alone?
Still, Sauron in one way and/or form, definitely had a "hand" in making them without a doubt, just might not have literally forged those three.
Actually helped, he taught Celebrimbor and gave some technology. The exact creation of the rings is not described. But the elven rings were linked to the One Ring, the elves did not wear them until the One Ring was lost. And in LotR the rings on the hands of Galadriel/Elrond/Gandalf were seen only by Frodo, as he was the bearer of the One Ring, for the other creatures the Elven rings remained invisible.
In the TV show they also made the Elven rings themselves, Sauron had fled by then.
Doug being genuinely hurt and going through so many emotions until he gets to calm is exactly what i needed. I felt for him 😂 One of the funniest moments of this show. 🤣 😂 hands down.
“This orc is licking his blade.” So much lore. 😂
4:11 Gimli knows about the fall of Moria. After Hobit, Balin tries to repopulate Moria but it has failed and Gimli doesn't know that. That's why he thinks Moria Is a working operation.
I also don't agree that S1 was too focused on "who is Sauron". I think the *audience* was focused on that and groupthinked themselves into following that line as part of the hate train. But Galadriel was the only person seeking Sauron, and there were a lot of plot threads without him.
people don't form their own opinions these days, thus the hate trains!! I liked almost everything about the first season :)
This could be part of social experiment if even our opinions are our own or we just translate them from another person to you and to another different person with zero experience.
That's the wildest conspiracy I made today. xD
@@lakshyabamne What did you like about Galadriel?
"Groupthought"?
That side break by Doug about Roadhouse was awesome 😂😂😂
I enjoyed season one and am excited for season 2. I may rewatch the 1st season again right before.
Haha Doug lost it for a sec 😂😂😂
That was AMAZING. I'm sitting here like "am I really seeing what I'm seeing right now?"
Thinking the stranger is one of the blue wizards. You pointed out Gandalf arrived much later than this & pointed out that the stranger is far in the east. The blue wizards arrived long before Gandalf & headed east, later returning west only to be sent east again by Saruman. The stranger is doing everything that the blue wizards are meant to do. Also, the staff “thing” isn’t exclusive to Gandalf, it’s reasonable to assume all 5 wizards would use the same actions for spells as we know they each had a staff from Saruman asking Gandalf if he demanded the 5 Staffs in Return of the King
The stranger said the Gandalf quote though, “when In doubt always follow your nose.” But I’d love it if he was one of the blue wizards.
@@BubbaBuckSwisher he did use the quote by Gandalf but Radagast also sniffed the air in the Hobbit, insinuating that all Wizards might use that saying. Think it’s a deliberate misdirect.
No, the Valar sent (all) the 5 Istari out twice. The first time they were more hands-on and their efforts considered unsuccessful. When they were re-sent to Middle Earth much, much later, their remit was different and more subtle.
@@adb9231 depends what you’re actually reading though. Let’s face it, one story said all 5 arrived together & another said the two blue wizards arrived first. The story in which the blue wizards arrived first seems to be the story being told, which is the story where the blue wizards head east then west, then sent east again by Saruman. You are talking about the story where all 5 arrived together, from Unfinished Tales again, that does not appear to be the story they’re using. Thanks for trying to correct me but I’m going by Silmarillion & LotR appendix’s 👍
The Doug rant is my new favorite Screen Crush moment!!😂😂
Yeah unashamed to admit I'd watch the heck out of that 😅
i watched it twice hands down amazing !
I’d love some of you to have been alive in the 80’s when Fantasy and Sci-fi had the budget of a thimble. And when I could only dream of them actually adapting my favourite book beyond a cartoon that only covered half of it. So not only have I had three amazing films, another three good films (The Hobbit should have been two films) and a series based on the appendices and other writings that I read and thought “I’d love to see this adapted one day” and now that’s what we are getting, and whilst Tolkien himself didn’t go into detail but sketched out with dates and events. Only when we get to Numenor do we get anything of any weight. So as kong as they hit the right event "beats" they can fill in the rest to make it an entertaining narrative. I enjoyed S1, it introduced characters, worlds, a mystery that kept people thinking, and culminated with a revelation, a huge setpiece and an important part of Tolkien's lore in the forging of the three Elven Rings.
S2 will build on that, and there are several events that should take place during this season and by this trailer probably will.
As someone else who can remember Ralph's version, I can relate to exactly what you're saying. I just love that the words I imagined so many decades ago are now being shown so beautifully on screen. I never thought it would happen.
Loved season 1 and enjoyed your breakdown. Looking forward to season 2.
Coming this summer, Doug stars in the remake of the remake of Roadhouse!!!
What was sillier...Galadriel and her crew sailing all the way to the undying lands in some "At attention" Pose....or her thinking she could swim back to middle earth with no water?
Im so glad we have charlie vickers playing annatar.
I’m really looking forward to this next season!
Sadly it tells that you did not read the legendarium. For example, Gimli does not think the original people of Moria were still there. Long after its fall, Gimli's relatives tried to resettle Moria.
Ok, never go full balrog won me over
I think the season 2 trailer looks cool, and I like the show, but I agree with all that stuff. And everyone has to agree that the line, mice were dancing a proper jig under the floorboards was gold 🪙
Doug: Warrior Poet
We need this as a shirt.
Did you not know Doug was at Bannockburn?
11:31 i think it is the fortress of Angband fron the first age. Because it can't be Barad-dûr, Saurons body isnt destroyed yet. And it can't also be Utumno because it is destroyed.
Its Durnost fortress from season 1
It’s the same fortress design from episode one in Forodwaith - hidden in that snow/ice storm, could be a flashback as to how it got that point.
@@RamseyGarnaoui honestly would be cool. That place was dope. Sauron standing there with his orc army? Even though the whole show was mid - that one shot is some of the best shots from all lotr media.
The orcs are probably marching to Eregion to destroy Ost-in-Edhil. As for Elrond riding his horse with an army at his back, it is said in the books that he tried to assist Celebrimbor against Sauron but he was overrun and was forced to retreat to Imladris. Sauron then sent a force to keep Elrond and his forces busy while he continued his campaign against Gil-Galad.
This was a great breakdown; the Tolkien lore is so dense; I have read almost everything and yet totally forgot about Sauron's elf disguise, so I don't mind if there are minor errors. I can't wait for this season and have very similar hopes.
Dumb question: how can Isildur be alive in this series? Isn’t he human?
He's part of the dunedain or is a numenorean. They were blessed by having longer lives. And he's not even born yet in the lore of the silmarillon the time period this series is based on
Celebrimbor and Isildur are 1,600 years apart. So yeah they've not only butchered the books basic lore but the timeline. This show isn't Tolkein but "based" on Tolkein. Depending on your view it's either "progressive " or antiwhite racist casting.
Isildur and his father, Elendil, were present at the Last Alliance. As was Elrond and King Gil-Galad.
We get to see the formative years as father and son in Rings of Power, but we saw in the prologue of Fellowship of the Ring film their deaths and how the Ring corrupted Isildur in his grief after wounding Sauron.
We also see Elrond’s mentorship under High King Gil-Galad. Elrond, of course, is present through most of the fighting against Sauron’s forces in the Second Age as Gil-Galad’s Herald, and inherits Vilya from Gil-Galad when the King is slain at the Last Alliance.
I predict these two scenes of Isildur and Elrond obtaining their Rings of Power will be the final episode of the series, a compare and contrast exercise for the viewer, then finishing with Elrond coaxing Isildur to follow him to Oroduin, presumably to “cast it into the fire! Destroy it!” But Isildur won’t be able to, of course.
Just rewatched season 1 and enjoyed it just as much as the first time i watched it. I honestly hope the wizard does end up being Gandalf and he leads the harfoots away from there normal path closer towards where they live in the third age with some of them staying in the area. I think it would tie in frodos ancestors with those of smeagol/gollum and it would also show why gandalf had been drawn to the hobbits in all of the movies. I also hope they show him meeting the other astari, the blue wizards radagast and saruman and they have a discussion on how to fight the evil.
We need a Drizzt movie.
The new DnD movie was really good, but failed to make big bucks. That said, a tv series is on the way, so if that does well, maybe they could give Drizzt a try.
We really do.😊
We do, but not right now. I waited MANY years for a WoT series and look what they did to that. We need competent writers and showrunners back in Hollywood.
To dark. Literally not metaphorically
My favorite Easter Egg is when they do subtle nod to Tolkien by using name like Sauron and guy..i mean Galadrielle ...it's almost like this was inspired by Tolkien books, it is very subtle you might miss it when watching the show
Quite a rant from that lil fur ball.
Against the popular opinion, I really liked The Rings of Power S1. I've now watched it three times and found every time something new that I missed earlier. Middle-Earth does not feel as magical as in Peter Jackson's films but is really interesting all the same. And Galadriel isn't psychotic in my opinion. I would be just as determined to destroy the evil race that murdered my family as she is. :)
You watched season 1 three times? 💀
Correction: Sauron did not gift the Elven Rings. Sauron coveted them zealouly after the Elves forged those Rings, 'after' they made them, themselves. (As was seen at the end of Season One.)
yeah, you have to admit though, this one is kind of on Tolkien for making the most well known part of his book (the dark lord on his dark throne poem) kind of imply that he did make them to trick the elves. You have to read quite a bit to know that that's not 100% how it went down.
0:34 20 months isn’t almost 3 years by my count
Have to say as a massive fan of Tolkien's writings, I loved S1 of RoP, the amount of very obscure lore details is amazing and it really delves deep into ALL of Tolkien's writings. Can't wait to see how the show expands and raises the stakes every season (as it seems).
doug going on that huge rant is hilarious and one of my favorite doug moments in a long list of awesome doug moments.
Can't wait to see what im good, and lady frodo are up to in Rhun.
the show is already 3 years old? wth...
doug casually quoting roadhouse XD
I really enjoyed this show, was so happy that its getting a second season and that its coming out in only three months
Well you will be the 1% of the 40% who actually finished the series to actually wish that
@@ewjiml I'm not sure about that 1%. More like 0.5%.
Well you are in the minority
I’m glad someone was able to enjoy it.
At this point Mirkwood should still be called Greenwood the Great and shouldn't be dark and infested yet. And it is wayyyyyy to early for the Balrog to be showing up. And the reason the elvish rings were able to be used for good was because they were forged last without Sauron. They're tied with the rest through the skills used to create them, but he never touched them.
I love Doug's sweet little paws :))
Pretty sure we just witnessed the start of Doug's villain arc
Doug has been a little unhinged lately... Doug you ok buddy?! 🤣
This and House of the Dragon Season 2's trailer dropping on the same day.
It's strange to see the same actor playing Annatar and Halbrand, it's like Clark Kent taking off his glasses. I hope these scenes are from after they figure out he's been there all along, and before that, it's another actor that they haven't disclosed yet.
Sauron coming to take celebrimbor for a little trip to mount doom
I think this show is way better if you aren't completely obsessed with shows following source material beat for beat every single step of the way. Let some directors and writers put their flair into the ip It can help in major ways
LMFAO!!! Dougs rant and the facial reaction!
I don't understand how people weren't hooked by season 1. You don't have to be obsessed over this show like me I'm 26 I grew up with the movies, the hobbit was alright but this show kicks ass. The last episode of season 1 when the volcano erupts my jaw literally dropped for a solid 2 minutes! Oh I love this show im so happy it's getting more seasons!!!
The production is indeed impressive, yes, but the narrative needs a lot of work. People who were unaware of what Tolkien actually wrote and how he envisioned his world were totally hooked. The ones upset with it are the Tolkien fans- the books' fans. It's a very subjective thing tho. Enjoy the series
Because much of it is utterly contradictory to the books and established world Tolkien created.
how did you put this out so fast lol? jeez!! Did y'all get to see the teaser early?
Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the shot of the snowy tower is going to be a flashback to the creation of Durnost (where Galadriel was in the first episode of season 1), maybe the flashback is when Adar tries to kill Sauron since in the s2 BTS footage they've released in the last week they show Adar with snow on his coat.
I really do like the perspective of how and why places in season 1 looked a little too clean and how its gonna slowly change into darkness over most of it season by season as many places end up getting destroyed or corrupted . Its a little detail that i hope Amazon takes advantage of for the next few seasons. Like a scary Hourglass effect as time goes by, darkness creeps in episode by episode taking over the light
The Lord of The Wigs: The Wigs of Power
I loved season 1 but I gotta admit, it had a lot of problems. Still super excited for the second season!
What problems? Just nice storytelling which made sense enough
@@stob23 no I agree, the show did a very good job at storytelling and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just noticed some problems with continuity across episodes, mostly having to do with the time it took for people to get places. Nothing major or that ruined the show for me.
@@stob23 What problems!? What problems!? There was nothing but problems!
the scene where it circles around them do you think the figures with glowing eyes in the background could be the nine??
Barrow wights
They’d be Wights, the Nazgul don’t exist yet but we’ll definitely see them sometime in the show.
@@crabberdabberye I really hope so! Praying it doesn’t get cancelled before they have the chance to go into that storyline I think that could be the shows redemption in some fans eyes, well as long as they do it well!
"A few mikes"... that says all you need to know.
/Sauron puts on a wig/
Elves: "Where did he go?"
4:23 . I think its the barrow-downs . In that one shot you can see some creatures in the background. Probably barrow-wights
In J.R.R. Tolkien's written Middle-earth canon, Sauron did *NOT* gift the Elves the three Elven Rings of Power. These three rings were forged by the Elven-smiths led by Celebrimbor, independently and without Sauron's direct involvement or knowledge. These rings were intended to preserve and enhance the beauty and magic of Middle-earth without domination or control, unlike the other rings Sauron influenced.
Therefore, the Three Elven Rings were forged in secret by Celebrimbor and were hidden from Sauron to prevent him from exerting control over the Elves through them.✨
The dark, *Dark* Lord Sourotton and his one master Wring.
8:53 dudeeeeeeee 😂awesome
Appreciate Screen Crush! Yes the haters would just look at some feeble things and keep hating instead of moving on with their lives.
For those interested to know what the teaser showed.
Siege of eregion
Wizards in the east
Pharazon challenging manwe sulimo or his vassals(the great eagles)
Sauron/celebrimbor dynamic
Elrond leading gil galads army.
All of this happens and is written by Tolkien in the appendices,Unfinished Tales and Silmarillion. Don’t let some blind hater tell you if the show is good or not.
In the books, Gandalf state that he has lived for 300 lives of man, figuring the average life span of a man is 70 years, that's 21,000 years, and then we really don't know when he actually started to help man
Create channel great breakdowns but Sauron was never an eye in the book he had a body Golem saw him read the book
Isn’t there some new material from Christopher Tolkien saying Gandalf came to Middle Earth one time prior to the Hobbit?
RoP1 is so laughably detached from Tolkien in terms of world, plot, themes, and characters - there’s no point in calling out specific lore issues.
Setting that aside, on its own merits: a very loose string of plot contrivances and generally shallow or one-note characters. A number of the actors did a fine job with what they had to work with, but good acting doesn’t fix a bad script/vision.
You want a good Tolkien adaptation? #1: 1981 BBC LOTR radio drama, Ian Holm as Frodo. #2 Bass-Rankin Return of the King. #3 Bakshi LOTR “part one”), #4 1977 Bass-Rankin Hobbit.
Yeah let's give Elves long hair and add some eldritch monsters to make them forget that we don't care about the source material
-Amazon, Beezos Harkonnen
NOT RYAN OUTING HIMSELF AS A HOUSEWIVES FAN 🐁
I actually really dig the show. My thought with Gandalf arriving so early is that I think the form we see is more his Olorin self and just like Gandalf the grey is reborn as Gandalf the white so will Olorin be reborn as Gandalf in the next age of man. Bit of a loop hole but I could see it working
I love the effort you put into the dogs dialogue
I think the stranger is more than likely one of the Blue Wizards, or Gandalf 😅
Honestly, if the stranger is a "wizard" and goes to Rhûn, then he's one or both of the blue wizards. They disappeared in the east.
the dog 😂😂😂
Amazon committed a billion dollars for 5 seasons. No matter what, they’re making all 5 seasons so I think over time we will get the characters fleshed out way more and the story will end up being loved by fans over time (like Revenge of the Sith).
Doug’s roadhouse rant had me rolling!
Watching Rings of Power again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
Bro, had me Trippin when he said it streamed almost 3 years ago. I thought I lost track of some years of my life for a second. It was almost 2 years ago, not three.
the city is Minas Tirith, not Gondor. Gondor is the Kingdom.
“The visuals were to perfect” they should’ve made it look more like She hulk that would’ve made it better💀
IT'S NOT GANDALF! IT'S A BLUE WIZARD!
Ahhh yes…Elrond. The half elf, half Dr Oz hero of middle earth
The stranger is a blue wizard
Looks good same as the first season i just hope the story , and pacing are better.
A great breakdown as always! It has been three years, but I feel like there was an opportunity to keep Gandalf within the lore of Tolkien, if the Harfoot storyline doesn’t happen on the same timeline as everything else in season one? Or did that get written off in some kind of overlap?
Those dog, angry rants are amazing
Doug went full Roadhouse...lol
Can't wait for season 2. I'm a big fan of Peter Jackson's adaptation but I enjoyed season 1 ... Very beautiful visuals and intriguing story 🥰
Hey,.. where'd Sauron go?!?!?!
Perhaps this new elf ringsmith that just came along has an idea!
the Enemy, the Necromancer , the shadow of the Past, in Amazon looks like Barbie
Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think that Doug can really talk.
It is not CONFIRMED that the wizard is Gandalf, I still have hope that it will be revealed as a blue wizard since he is going to Rhun and Gandalf says that he does not go to the east!
Doug… that was the greatest rant in all of UA-cam
So many lore mistakes (talking about Ryan, because listing lore mistakes in the show would be WAY too exhausting)...
2:48 Ryan mentions Gandalf arriving a few thousand years early as breaking lore, but not the Harfoots breaking lore for the same reason.
4:02 Ryan is right to question the appearance of the balrog so early (he shows up in the 3rd Age), but Gimli (and everyone else) knows that Moria fell long before the Hobbit and Gimli was thinking his uncle Balin had retaken it. It is unclear who knew (if anyone) that Durin's Bane was a balrog.
6:20 Sauron did not gift the three rings to the elves. In the books/movies, they were made without his knowledge.
9:00 Gondor was not a city. Gondor was a nation - the Southern Kingdom established by Elendil and ruled jointly by Isildur and Anarion. The city is Minas Anor (later renamed to Minas Tirith).
10:50 In the books, it was the dwarves that came to the aid of the elves in Eregion against Sauron and allowed Elrond to escape.
11:20 Sauron fooled them in making the 16 rings (given to men and dwarves), he didn't know about the three until after he made th4e One. The elves instantly became aware of him and took their rings off. They didn't overcome his control, they avoided it. Only after he was defeated in the Battle of the Last Alliance did they dare put them on again.
8:09 Doug Rant Start. 🤣
Honestly i feel like the wanderer wizard is sarumon who is older than gandalf. He also threw his lot in with sauron way before the original trilogy and it would make sense that he was helped by the prehobbits and as gandalfs master told him to learn this world seek the hobbits.
Ballin retook Moria well after it was initially destroyed by the Balrog and taken by goblins
Holy crap it's been 3 years already? What happened.
Do you Doug...do you buddy...
I really hope that it isn't Gandalf.
