I live in Kellyville OK, just starting to try and be more self sufficient, was thinking all my life I've got to get cows but now I'm gonna buy my first goats this month thank you for the videos, ive binge watched like 5 so far, off to your next one
I love watching Houston and love it when Jacoby speaks up. He's not as extroverted as Houston and I appreciate it when you notice that he spoke up and make the extra effort to get him on the video. It's all very sweet.
I'm a college student near Seattle, and I just used your video as a source on a paper talking about the use of donkeys as guard animals for goats. The price I could theoretically lose to a pesky coyote was compared to the price of maintaining a donkey. Thanks for the information
Thank you for these videos! The husband and I are recovering city-slickers raised in cities our whole lives. We’ve recently moved to a rural area and looking to start a little family farm to raise our child on. We’re going to start with chickens (or chikums as my kiddo calls them) then work our way up to “Go-Gos” (again, kiddo’s words). You’re videos have been building our confidence. Thank you!
wow this was interesting stuff, very informative. not a homesteader just enjoy living thru a few families like you on utube. my family was mostly all farmers with a few exceptions, from the midwest. i respect this lifestyle so much.
Plus,if you kept them until spring you’d have more cost into them for feed ect..So not a bad deal really.. Just noticed the date on this video..but still good info. Farm exemptions... good point
Hi... I'm up here in Canada and would like to start a small goat farm in Alberta (close to Calgary) early next year. I have raised dogs (Great Pyreneese)for 25 years but have never farmed. I am interested in Kikos and will be visiting farms for tips and direction. What I'm getting at is I have never been to Oklahoma and would find it an interesting learning experience to visit a goat farm.
I'm not sure if your interested in fiddling around with it, but registered quality pure breed Kikos typically sell between 600 to $1200 per head depending on the quality of each goat. It will cost you that much to invest into your breeding stock, but after the first kidding cycle, your kid sales at 4 months should recover your initial expenses, with a decent profit because of the number twins they have. Of course that means dealing with the registration, and lacks the convenience of one stop drop on goat sales. However to your advantage, at least last time I checked, registered pure breed kikos, are typically sold out before they're even at selling age, because the demand for quality breeding stock is so high, with orders in advance, reserving picks on kids sometimes before the birthing season. Most people use a website, to list there breeding does, the buck used, and the offspring that is or will soon be available. Something to consider, especially since pure breed Kiko breed standard is zero imput. Zero de-worming, zero hoof work, and all pasture feed. You would only use feed if their's no pasture forage available, or to get them to follow you, like your handy feed bucket trick.
Yes I've thought about doing that several times. I just haven't followed through with it. I've looked at lots of other breeders websites and such. It would be a good way to profit more from the same input.
Thank you for sharing this. I'm thinking of starting a herd of boer goats-1 ram and 10 females to produce atleast 10 kids January 2022. He'll be a happy ram :-)
+OFF GRID with DOUG & STACY nner of a video, I been tryin to find out about "farming boer goat" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Great video! New subscriber and fellow Okie here, I'm near Tulsa. We also raise Kikos, both registered and commercial. Haven't made it to Perry yet, planning to next spring.
I like your goats they pay you when they are sold, they keep the land as you would like for hunting and fishing, they show that you are farming for tax befit if you had to you could eat them okay your not getting rice and you both work but boy d you have a lovely place to live and bring up the kids + large garden to grow veg and flowers enough to give away, do like your lifestyle
@@ArmsFamilyHomesteadI would be guessing butt when you get to the auction I presume like most you see them into a pen of some sort then later some body brings them through to the arena then when sold takes them back to the pen. I am guessing that is what yard fees are and may include water, hay and/or straw?
Daniel thanks for the auction results. It's interesting to see what livestock in other areas sell for! Where I am goats sell for more than sheep. I have sheep (Well and pigs, chickens, ducks, and turkeys). Tracy
Hi Daniel, I really enjoyed your videos, good honest info! I am interested in starting a small farm here in CA can use your help. If you would like to visit CA soon, I'd like to get some consultation or let me know how I can reach you for a more direct conversation. Thanks Cheers!!!
Thank you for posting and sharing this. I have been looking to getting back into goats. I have been trying to decide which way to go. Im def interested in the kiko goats. I have some dairy goats and I plan on add to my dairy goats, but those would be more just for personal use, but I want to get into some thing for market sales. Not sure how the market goats sale are in Ky but I plan on looking into it. I think you did pretty good at the market. This kinda gives me an idea how the goats may go.
im curious to know ur feelings on watching em go:( how do ya cope etc? i like goats but think if i raised em id end up living off cheese and milk:) thanks for the videos!
Oh no those poor goats went to the meat market.....":( haha. That's a good profit for just 16 weeks good job....you got some Vaca money now. $2.51 a pound is good priece. Lamb prices are close to that. $2.60-$2.80lb
I had a friend that sold several lambs at this sale and the prices really dropped. They had tons of sheep show up and I guess that drove prices down. I think he only averaged about $2-2.25 a pound. It's crazy how much better the goat market is than it was just a couple years ago. I would have never dreamed they would sell for $2.50 a pound.
Arms Family Homestead Dang sheep prices have dropped down there, up here in Northen Oklahoma they are still high. yeah I would be very happy for $2.50 a lb. almost make you wanna sell some more lol. I like selling on Craigslist if I'm not on a hurry to sell. if I don't want to mess with that I do what you do. just take them to the sell. Good job. My wife didn't get why I wanted to raise sheep until she seen the cash in my hand hahahaha
I have found that timing is everything when it comes to auctions. I haven't sold any larger livestock, just roosters. When there were lots of roosters at the sale, I didn't do so good. But when there weren't so many, my boys tended to do pretty good. I tried to not take more than 4 at a time. Auction was local, so didn't cost me much to get them there. (my "better quality" birds I preferred to sell privately)

In the summer a 100% Boer goat in upstate NY goes for adult female: $120-150 100% boer adult male intacked $350+. How does that compare to you guys? Considering getting some female Kikos and a male Boer. Before this video I was going to do %100 Boer. I have 16 acres of woods no pasture. Trying to learn as much as I can while I work on my infrastructure. I have experience with dairy cows and goats no so much meat animals.
Thanks for the info. Hoping to get some female kikos next summer once the cross fencing is in to clean up the woods and provide kids for sale. Do you see any difference on prices between the different breeds?
I heard that certain animals on personal farm u can document? / taxes can you do a video on how to go about that and more information and your personal Experience
Hey man, love the videos! Thank you for your service to our fellow Americans...an old army buddy of mine is also in law enforcement, County deputy for Tulsa
Do you think it's easier having goats than cows? Like do you have to brand, castrate, goats like you do cows? If not it seems like there is less work to do in goats but more to have to get an equal price as you would cows.
They will have to have a scrapes tag to be sold at the auction, but I've never had my own. They charge a couple dollars per goat to put them in at the sale.
As he says, it helps allow him to keep a farm exemption. I do not know what state he is in. Some states have tax breaks for farmers. Such as no sales taxes on equipment you buy for the farm. So if your farm needs a new ATV (for farm use), no sales tax. Plus property tax breaks.
Daniel, my question, other than 'Where's Houston?' is can you kindly remind me of the name of the author that your young neighbour studied regarding how he set up his garden. I can't seem to find the interview with him as I can't remember who your guests were that interviewed him for their UA-cam channel.

Well those are questions that don't have just a short answer. In my area 5-6 month old goats are selling for around $2.50 per pound. You might want to start out with goats that are already breeding age so they would cost you a little more because they are bigger.
Not much at all on the babies. I spent just under $100 on feed after I weened them. Now I did have to feed the momma goats grain and hay through the winter. The hay didn't cost me anything since I baled it off of my property.
If you hire a butcher, can you sell the processed meat directly to a consumer. I live in California. I’ve ordered online ducks from MapleLeaf Farms, Indiana.

In other words, you do not make a profit. You are not even counting in your labor or the cost of the space where you keep them or the vet cost. Just like farmers, never a profit. Lucky if you break even.
So if you have a young doe weighing 40 lbs. you would sell her for $120.00? How old are they and approximately how much do they weigh when you would sell after they are done nursing from their mom?
Well overall we have 110 acres but the goats don't use all of it. They have a small pasture that they are in during the winter that is about 2-3 acres. During the summer they roam around on about half of our property.

im sorry if its to personal but do you have to pay taxes on selling livestock?
Thank for sharing. How about keeping sheep 🐑 for rack of lamb.
I've thought about sheep but they just don't bring quite as much in our area.
Pretty decent
Here in NM I can't buy one for less than $100. $150 to $400 for an adult.
I just bought some property in inola Oklahoma and I just bought my self two kiko goats how often do you feed them feeder ?
I don't feed them much feed at all except when the are getting close to kidding and while they are nursing. Congrats on you land purchase.
What about chickens? Do you sell those as well, or just use them for meat and eggs?
We sell a few here and there but only to get rid of some of the extra roosters. We mostly just use them for eggs.
If you hire a butcher, can you sell the processed meat directly to a consumer. I live in California. I’ve ordered online ducks from MapleLeaf Farms, Indiana.
That is only true if it's a USDA inspected facility. We have several meat processors in our area but none of them have the USDA certification that would allow for the sale of meat. Actually every package of meat is mark on the label "not for resale."
Arms Family, there are other ways to sell processed meats directly to consumers, and that is to enroll them in a CSA group(Community Supported Agriculture Group). Where can I buy some goat meat? It isn't exactly sold in the grocery stores around here in
my area.
Well that's a tough question. The only option here is to buy a goat from a local farmer and take it to the meat processing plant.
In other words, you do not make a profit. You are not even counting in your labor or the cost of the space where you keep them or the vet cost. Just like farmers, never a profit. Lucky if you break even.
are you still selling small goats and if you are what do you charge for one?
I just finished kidding this year but I don't know for sure if we will be selling very many this year.
What part of Oklahoma I’m from Meeker
The Sun is shining and it’s raining. The Devil is kissing his bride!
I live in Northeast Oklahoma. Where do you buy your goats from?
I bought most of mine from a couple local farms. I have a video on my channel called Copperhead Farms Kikos. Check it out.
Thank you sir
I live in Blaine County Oklahoma 😱😱😱😱😱
I notice me mo said Zero de-worming, zero hoof work for pure breed kikos. Do you have to worm and trim hoof on your goats.
I don't have to trim their hoofs at all and I've only had to worm a couple of the kikos. That is a huge advantage of Kikos.
So if someone want to buy a couple of baby goats how much would you charge.
I don't have any now and won't until next spring. Lately the going price has been about 3.00 dollars per pound.
So if you have a young doe weighing 40 lbs. you would sell her for $120.00? How old are they and approximately how much do they weigh when you would sell after they are done nursing from their mom?
Yes that would be about the price. We usually sell them at around 4-5 months old or about 50 pounds.
Thank you that is good to know and very helpful too :) have a great day.
Was it profitable?
Yes, but like I've said many times. I don't put a lot of money into them on feed.
do you RFID chip the goats?
No.

Hey where's Houston? Jk but he really is super cute.
Thanks.
How many acres is your pasture. It looked like quite a bit more than I realized in your last vid
Well overall we have 110 acres but the goats don't use all of it. They have a small pasture that they are in during the winter that is about 2-3 acres. During the summer they roam around on about half of our property.
That's a lot of work raising goats ! Does your chicken lay a lot a eggs ! My dad say a the y the best I think so to ! I have a good Question. What happens when you have hail storm. How do you protect your garden ? My dog Chummy he s a beagle he loves being lose but in Massachusetts their a leash law how come laws are different ! From state to state !
Yes the chickens lay way more eggs than we can eat. Hail storms can destroy a garden. I don't have any way to protect it outside of the greenhouse.

This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "boer goat facts" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Chloetey Boer Goatify - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my m8 got cool success with it.
So how come the other video shows you selling 14 goats for a fistful of $100 bills. 9 were babies but 5 were older. It looks like those reaped you lots more. (Never did any farming, therefore the ignorance) think that sale was this year.
How you pay bills 2 thousand in a year ?
I pay my bills with the income from my job not selling a few goats here and there.
How do you get the ear tags?
I buy them at a local feed store or on amazon.
