Apparently, farming is quite difficult but it touches everyone in one way or the other. Those who are in it can attest to it. Therefore, repelling others because they aren't farmers would be killing the potentials that would be awesome to uncover the fact that they are in one way or the other intrigued by the subject: farming.
Me and my husband have two different approaches on making money on our farm, both which have worked fairly well. We have the standard "shop" we're we sell fresh produce, eggs, and things such as cheese and fudge from our goat milk. The shop doesn't make a huge amount of money considering we're we live we have many neighbors who sell the same products but it's our SERVICES that really hit the jackpot. We have weekly classes on many different things involving the homestead life, we have cooking classes in which we teach people how to easily cook more healthy meals from the produce that they can grow themselves, we also have gardening and animal info/caretaking classes. We are the only one in the area with these opportunities so we get all the business🙂
As a small homestead I consider myself a great success when my egg sales covers the costs of chicken feed, plus a few free eggs per day for my family. If my numbers are correct that amounts to about 25 heritage breed hens and a few roosters. I'm on my way there! Great success here I come!

Contrary to either of your's or John's conclusions, money can be made on eggs. It's all in marketing them, and developing a client base. This allows you to get top dollar for your eggs! If there are people out there who'll pay 50k for a car, and 15k for a car... there's people out there who'll pay $7/dozen for eggs, vs. $2/dozen. Research your feeding methods, shave costs, and think outside the chicken coop! All it takes is the right approach and it will happen, I did it the slow route myself and learned along the way. Only way I can keep any eggs in stock now is buy more chickens, and build more nest boxes. Egg price hikes don't even phase those who want quality. So show your clients superior quality, and they'll pay superior prices!
John was charging premiums, still had trouble getting much profit. But at a smaller level it can be done, just hard to do at a business scale. Not impossible, but hard.
Doodley Squat what's the point of even keeping chickens? If you want a plant to throw your scraps then make a biodigester and never pay for cooking and some heating again. Ask for free oil and food scraps from restaurants.
For the bi product, called "eggs" You have the kinda time on your hands to manually do the extra work, more power to you. Me, I'll take advantage of natures free farm labor, and move onto bigger projects. Chickens just aren't for everybody I guess :)

You are right . I always let them free range in the day time . In winter I feed grasses grown under a light in the shed or garage it's good for them and I grow enough barley and bran and oats to feed them . Or I should say I did . Sold them all . I'm am currently raising parent stock to breed red sex links . Red chickens that are laying age ho for around 20 25 dollars a bird .
Nice I'm not very good with technology lol. But it's not really hard . There us plenty onnu tube and Google info . Sunflower fodder is really good high In protien. I always at it to the Dry mix. I only use organic feed grains when I feed grains . I'd you feed whole oats and wheat soak it first over night so they can break in down better . Really drafts are bad in winter and for baby chicks drafts will kill then fast the chicks . So make sure you have no drafts in the brooders until they get feathers .

Now we’re calling 20 farmers who would like to stream their animals and sell calls with them. You only need a smartphone with a camera and Internet connection, and a funny animal that you’ll stream.
I grow fodder from wheat and barley seed to feed my chickens. this increases your profit margin by huge amounts. when you break it down its around $.05/lb of feed, you feed 20% of your flocks weight in fodder per day and you can see how this can greatly increase your profit margin. Also fodder fed chickens produce the best tasting eggs you've ever had along with being organic and knowing exactly what your birds are eating because you've grown it yourself. Fodder growing systems are simple and easy to build, plans can be found on youtube. I built mine for about $100 using wood I had around our farm and wash tubs bought from the dollar store, water pump and timer.
Actually, you're just adding water to the dry grain by doing this, since there's no soil involved. Much of the carbohydrate energy in the grain is being used up in its growth. There is a nett LOSS in doing this. Chickens do better on the whole grain. Their crops are made for grinding and digesting grains and seeds. You need to work out what the Dry Matter Content of any livestock feed is, and compare them and the cost per each unit, before deciding that one is cheaper than another. Grain is about 90% Dry Matter; "fodder" grown from that grain is only about 10 - 15% Dry Matter. So the animal or bird will need to eat about 8 times the total weight of green feed to supply the energy, protein and minerals in dry grain.
MrSpencers5 Another way I have seen to feed your chickens for free is to start a compositing. And they can eat the bugs that come and any left over food rhsts thrown in.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I have goats, both meat and layer chickens and meat rabbits but raise them for our own meat more like a hobby than a business. Here in western WA feeder pigs are expensive also. Two years ago we bought them for 125 a piece. Too much meat for 4 people so we are going to try just one this spring.

Another pretty untapped market-depending on your area- is a farm preschool program. In my area farm preschools are 4 hours or less and have zero licensing requirements and makes BIG money. Like $1,000/mo per kid. I’m a preschool teacher and like farming/animals as a hobby so when I opened my own farm preschool I found the real desire for parents in my semi-urban area to send their kids to a farm preschool.
This is a older video but I will go ahead and say that I if you can sell farm fresh eggs for $3.00 a dozen, you can make top dollar $6-$7 for free range chicken eggs with high levels of omega3s, its as simple as growing some flax and adding more labor into working the ground but it tends to pay off well if your willing to go the extra mile. We have found flax to be a good way to help reset a garden from most bug problems anyway, then we have fresh flax seed to sell to people and we feed to our animals which in turn adds the needed value for our eggs to become profitable. :) happy farming all!

The fact of the matter is the projects I do on my place have to produce either savings or income. I can't afford for my little Homestead to be a constant outlay of cash. So all my projects are geared towards one of four goals. Goal #1: making a little profit so that I can keep doing what I'm doing. Goal #2: save me some expenses elsewhere, so I don't have to spend money elsewhere, so that I can keep doing what I'm doing. Goal#3: make some Capital Improvements to my place so that when things come up I can handle more of the problems myself and thus save or make more money. Capital Improvements should also big geared towards paying off when I go to liquidate this location whether it be for retirement for relocating to a bigger place. Goal #4: teaching my family to be more independent and better at managing their time and money. So hopefully they can have a better life. I guess I would have to add a fifth goal in there somewhere. The goal of just enjoying my life some. But I can only do that if I succeed at the first three goals. I don't have thousands and thousands of dollars to constantly throw away losing money on a hobby.

Too many eggs...? Make Lemon Curd, (or any curd for that matter). You can sell it on, way above margin 1000 glass jars cost little so its ingredients, energy and time. Easily sell good stuff at $4 a jar. Get a stall, also do it with Honey, you can rock up and sell stuff at a stall...
I buy grass raised (I didn't even know there was grass raised pigs). The taste is unbelievably different. To be honest, I never liked eating poem, but this pork I will eat very occasionally. As far as farm classes I couldn't personally do it just because I'm not very good at lecturing people. Great video!
I have actually made a large profit margin with meat rabbit breeding stock. Just selling rabbit meat produced a slight profit...but selling breeding stock made huge profit margins
Yes it does. Its nice when i can sell a live rabbit for $20 but only sell a dressed one for $5. Plus i dont have to worry about all those laws and the money involved in being compliant with those laws.

I have liked farming all my life because I grew up on a farm for my grandparents. Surprising am not farming but I own a 4 Hector farm where I live. Am 45 years and I work as an art Lecturer but my heart burns for farming everyday and I really want to earn a living making my own money from farming. Possibly I want to make my self the last person in my family to be employed. I want my descendants to be self employed through farming. My interests are in: bananas, goats, dairy cattle, chickens and dogs. How can I make this a reality?
Said the same thing on John´s video about this. Not to be rude, but you guys need to do more research on ´free´ food for chickens. There are fairly easy things you can do that are no more work than feeding ´feed´ but are almost free. Worm Farm composting, Comfrey, duckweed and barley fodder.
Another possibility for meat sales that exists today which did not exist 25 years ago, is goat and lamb. If you live close to a city that has decent Middle-Eastern or Mediterranean immigrant populations, you can capitalize on serious shortage of these meats here in the US. From a health-food perspective, the CLA content of these meats is much higher than beef, hog, turkey or chicken. So there also exists a niche market in the health-food-minded population. But you need to do the research yourself and find or create some literature, so you can market it effectively.
Agriculture and farming will continue to be a bog deal as long as food continues to be a big deal. Food is essential for good health and wellness. This is how farming will continue to thrive.
I would love to know more about sheep farm and wool. I really want to have sheep(wool/meat goats) , wooly goats, alpaca, angora bunnies, and meat/milk goats. I would love to spin my own wool but not dye it. Or just sale wool as is too raw. I can’t find much good information about the wool business. I know the more you do with the wool the more you get out of it. But I would love more details. I don’t mind even having some other meat on the farm.
Oh my, watching that method of butchering a chicken is torturous! I grew up on a small farm, and my mother trained us how to butcher the old hens by skinning, instead of doing all that plucking. All you do is make a small hole near the base of the breastbone, and split the skin up to the neck and down to the vent. Then, "undress" the bird, pulling the skin inside out down the wings, cutting the big wing feathers off that one side of the bone. Takes a second or two. Repeat with the other wing. Then, "take the pants off" the chicken. Just pull that feather-skin mess off, inside out, down over the legs, to the second joint. Whack the underside of the joint with the butcher knife, and cut off the feet, which are encased inside the skin. Drop the entire package into a 5-gallon bucket. cut carefully around the vent, and open the tummy area large enough to slip the hand in. Pull out the entrails, dropping them into that same bucket. Insert the hose into the bird, and give it a good rinse. Pitch the finished bird into a bucket of clean cold water, and without missing a beat, reach for the next dead bird. The whole process is very quick. Why bother with the skin? It's not that full of nutrients, is it?
Watch them butchering a duck. That's A LOT OF WORK that could be solved by just skinning them. And since quails are always skinned, I don't see why larger birds aren't.
Selling eggs is profitable right now. It’s cheaper to buy farm fresh and that’s the way people are going. People prefer farm fresh. It’s all about marketing.
Taking away the profit side of business, I believe that breaking even after feeding your family and covering the cost of upkeep is a wealth in of itself. Self sustaining and save money going to the grocery store.

I buy free range organic eggs up here in Canada for 6.50 a dozen ...these farmers produce a specialty item and everyone wants these lovely eggs! farmers clean up and make lots of money from a humane quality product. Eat just one of these eggs and the cheap ones taste like garbage even in a cake mix. I wont use cheap eggs. The person on this video has obviously been to business school or talks in those phrases. I suggest he goes into factory farming.
d torgerson Holsteins make most but, you'll need 5-10 grand in a stable no touch vet account per 5-10 head. That's per year, also supplemental feeding and meds. Also transport to a cattle auction $$ and avg 70+/-cents to 1$+/- a pound in the Midwest USA. Cows graze like a brush hog so 7acres kept clean and maintained would be to much money. Try goats/sheep and cost of vet Bill yearly is about up to 500 a head +/-. this is all to keep too dollar breeding and growth. If you cheep out you'll never turn a nickle.
What about a goat dairy farm, the product being milk, cheese and butter? I wonder how well it could grow as a specialty product sold primarily to restaurants.
+donald wycoff there is definitely a good market for goats milk and cheese. Making it a large enough size to sell to restaurants is a little more work to get the facilities you need. But hey, if you love it, go for it!

Man i see this same thought from others in eggs but o made money on my eggs. The peofit wasnt huge but with as many chickens we have laying we had extra by a long shot it was something we didnt count to make any money at all off of. Just sort of an added small income. Since we free range a lot it cuts the feed expense way down. But i would see if we were trying to turn a profit off eggs alone we might have a problem there. Just dont make that the center of your profit . Center your homestead around your needs not profits thats sorta what makes it worth it right there. I sold dozen after dozen after dozen of eggs tho. Which was great because it was way more than we needed so basically i used what we made off the eggs as our feed purchase revenue . As long as i can offset my feed costs that makes it much more desireable. Then again im not really trying to make a business out of this. I just dont know if i want to take it to that level. I could! But should i?

Pigs were known as the "mortgage makers" 20+ years ago. They do not make what they once did, but then everything is tighter.

Homesteady - I'm curious about whether your UA-cam videos make nay money? You obviously spend a reasonable amount of time working on them, and they are about the small farming you do, so I would think they're part of your homesteading enterprise.
Too many eggs...? Make Lemon Curd, (or any curd for that matter). You can sell it on, way above margin 1000 glass jars cost little so its ingredients, energy and time. Easily sell good stuff at $4 a jar. Get a stall, also do it with Honey, you can rock up and sell stuff at a stall...
I buy grass raised (I didn't even know there was grass raised pigs). The taste is unbelievably different. To be honest, I never liked eating poem, but this pork I will eat very occasionally. As far as farm classes I couldn't personally do it just because I'm not very good at lecturing people. Great video!
I have actually made a large profit margin with meat rabbit breeding stock. Just selling rabbit meat produced a slight profit...but selling breeding stock made huge profit margins

Yes it does. Its nice when i can sell a live rabbit for $20 but only sell a dressed one for $5. Plus i dont have to worry about all those laws and the money involved in being compliant with those laws.

I have liked farming all my life because I grew up on a farm for my grandparents. Surprising am not farming but I own a 4 Hector farm where I live. Am 45 years and I work as an art Lecturer but my heart burns for farming everyday and I really want to earn a living making my own money from farming. Possibly I want to make my self the last person in my family to be employed. I want my descendants to be self employed through farming. My interests are in: bananas, goats, dairy cattle, chickens and dogs.
How can I make this a reality?

Said the same thing on John´s video about this. Not to be rude, but you guys need to do more research on ´free´ food for chickens. There are fairly easy things you can do that are no more work than feeding ´feed´ but are almost free. Worm Farm composting, Comfrey, duckweed and barley fodder.
I would like to hear about making money from sheep (both fiber and meat).

Another possibility for meat sales that exists today which did not exist 25 years ago, is goat and lamb. If you live close to a city that has decent Middle-Eastern or Mediterranean immigrant populations, you can capitalize on serious shortage of these meats here in the US. From a health-food perspective, the CLA content of these meats is much higher than beef, hog, turkey or chicken. So there also exists a niche market in the health-food-minded population. But you need to do the research yourself and find or create some literature, so you can market it effectively.

I would love to know more about sheep farm and wool. I really want to have sheep(wool/meat goats) , wooly goats, alpaca, angora bunnies, and meat/milk goats. I would love to spin my own wool but not dye it. Or just sale wool as is too raw. I can’t find much good information about the wool business. I know the more you do with the wool the more you get out of it. But I would love more details. I don’t mind even having some other meat on the farm.

Oh my, watching that method of butchering a chicken is torturous! I grew up on a small farm, and my mother trained us how to butcher the old hens by skinning, instead of doing all that plucking.
All you do is make a small hole near the base of the breastbone, and split the skin up to the neck and down to the vent. Then, "undress" the bird, pulling the skin inside out down the wings, cutting the big wing feathers off that one side of the bone. Takes a second or two. Repeat with the other wing. Then, "take the pants off" the chicken. Just pull that feather-skin mess off, inside out, down over the legs, to the second joint. Whack the underside of the joint with the butcher knife, and cut off the feet, which are encased inside the skin.
Drop the entire package into a 5-gallon bucket. cut carefully around the vent, and open the tummy area large enough to slip the hand in. Pull out the entrails, dropping them into that same bucket. Insert the hose into the bird, and give it a good rinse. Pitch the finished bird into a bucket of clean cold water, and without missing a beat, reach for the next dead bird.
The whole process is very quick. Why bother with the skin? It's not that full of nutrients, is it?
Watch them butchering a duck. That's A LOT OF WORK that could be solved by just skinning them. And since quails are always skinned, I don't see why larger birds aren't.
Chicken skin is often preferred intact by consumers. We never skin our chickens. It just loses a ton of flavor and moisture when it's skinned.
Have you ever tried to skin chickens I find it much easier than plucking . We bake or boil our chickens so the missing skin is no problem for us .

Taking away the profit side of business, I believe that breaking even after feeding your family and covering the cost of upkeep is a wealth in of itself. Self sustaining and save money going to the grocery store.

How do I get into sheep farming
I buy free range organic eggs up here in Canada for 6.50 a dozen ...these farmers produce a specialty item and everyone wants these lovely eggs! farmers clean up and make lots of money from a humane quality product. Eat just one of these eggs and the cheap ones taste like garbage even in a cake mix. I wont use cheap eggs. The person on this video has obviously been to business school or talks in those phrases. I suggest he goes into factory farming.

d torgerson Holsteins make most but, you'll need 5-10 grand in a stable no touch vet account per 5-10 head. That's per year, also supplemental feeding and meds. Also transport to a cattle auction $$ and avg 70+/-cents to 1$+/- a pound in the Midwest USA. Cows graze like a brush hog so 7acres kept clean and maintained would be to much money. Try goats/sheep and cost of vet Bill yearly is about up to 500 a head +/-. this is all to keep too dollar breeding and growth. If you cheep out you'll never turn a nickle.

Different reasons, sometimes to avoid all the roosters, sometimes because we want different breeds, always depends.
It sucks for me because in my country, we have stricter rules about keeping pigs then using soft and harddrugs.

+donald wycoff there is definitely a good market for goats milk and cheese. Making it a large enough size to sell to restaurants is a little more work to get the facilities you need. But hey, if you love it, go for it!

Man i see this same thought from others in eggs but o made money on my eggs. The peofit wasnt huge but with as many chickens we have laying we had extra by a long shot it was something we didnt count to make any money at all off of. Just sort of an added small income. Since we free range a lot it cuts the feed expense way down. But i would see if we were trying to turn a profit off eggs alone we might have a problem there. Just dont make that the center of your profit . Center your homestead around your needs not profits thats sorta what makes it worth it right there. I sold dozen after dozen after dozen of eggs tho. Which was great because it was way more than we needed so basically i used what we made off the eggs as our feed purchase revenue . As long as i can offset my feed costs that makes it much more desireable. Then again im not really trying to make a business out of this. I just dont know if i want to take it to that level. I could! But should i?
