Red Hot Chili Peppers | Rock legends | Sunday Night

- The Red Hot Chili Peppers are rock and roll survivors. Despite their crazy antics on-stage and their wild and reckless behaviour off, they're still together delivering hit albums and groundbreaking music. Aussie band member Flea puts their unlikely longevity down to mateship. They live to perform together and absolutely hate missing a show.
In 2016, when lead singer Anthony Kiedis was rushed to hospital, they were unable to play an Australian concert - and it raised a lot of questions.

“I don’t think it’s possible to make good art without profound pain.”
-Flea
What a quote!
Never make Flea cry. Cause it destroys my heart seeing this amazing person shed tears.
😍
Seeing sex offenders cry destroys you?
Crying is beautiful, natural, healing and healthy. I don't trust people that don't cry. I don't trust people that are ashamed to cry. Flea crying only makes him human, heartfelt, relatable and more beautiful and soulful. He says he wants to feel EVERYTHING and sadness/crying is on that spectrum. I respect that and can relate.I feel that entire spectrum, too. I know people are uncomfortable with crying. I cry anytime that expression naturally comes up and it makes people uncomfortable. THAT makes me sad enough to cry but I don't care... Learn to cry!!! Learn to FEEL!!!
@@oldbastard3641Who hurt you little buddy.
@@profile2047 Anthony Kiedis had sex with a 14 year old. Go read his Scar Tissue book.
The genius of Frusciante took RHCP to a stratospheric level. Deserved to be referenced with all due respect.
Well, maybe this level is the reason. How can you normally talk about someone who left your family after such mighty years?
Ilya Litvinov RHCP wouldn’t be on this interview in the first place without JF
very STRATospheric hehe.....I'm gonna go now.
Without a dout. Just watch the Live at Slane Castle concert. It's one of the best shows ever.
And can sing
SN: ''Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer''
Also SN: Show footage of John Frusciante in every clip
JOSH IS A MILLION MILES FROM GALACTIC'S JOHN GUITAR PLAYING.........
To be fair, they showed Hillel Slovak and Dave Navarro as well. Clips from every era of the band, not just John.
joe coquerre John found josh. He plays on some of his solo stuff.
If he’s good enough for johns solo work he’s good enough for chili’s
Sander. Josh who? Lol
10:57 By the way. Josh playing.
gotta love how 90% of the music in the video features frusciante tunes with no mention of the guy
Was thinking this throughout the whole vid
LfunkeyA John is a true artist, he wanted to be a rockstar unlike most other members and did just that, Such a beloved human amongst rhcp fans
Sursurk no one had to ask anything. they could have just mentioned him once during the narration.
Well, the thing is...
Look at from their perspective.
He left them not once, but twice.
His COwriting was a major reason why the Chilis even became the Chilis.
They will always quietly (remain) the jilted lover.
First ballot HOF band, 100% nonetheless.
Hmm I wonder if maybe it’s because he’s not in the fucking band??
I love fleas heart. He's such a beautiful person with a huge heart.
Love Flea. I could listen to him all day. He feels things so deeply. It's been 30+ years since Hillel passed and he still has to compose himself when asked about him.
Have you listened to his audio book?
@BryanHRBrodie yes I have. Planned on getting the book but when I heard he was going to voice the audio book I got it as soon as I could
You can see the pain in flea’s eyes when they talk about Hillel’s death :( genuine emotion
Anthony is honestly pretty damn intelligent. He's gone through so much shit in his life that his perspective on it is really interesting. He has a lot of wisdom to share.
Yeah he's a real philosopher.
His lyrics prove otherwise. He appears to be superficial with little depth. That comes from a RHCP fan.
@@emile5921 May I ask what you think about Flea?
What do you think about the personalities of the four of them?
@@korkunctheterrible4302 Flea, Chad, John/Josh are musicians. They are neither frontmen nor lyricists. They prove their worth by writing and performing music, and they are pretty damn good at doing that. Their personalities are irrelevant while doing that. On the other hand it's Anthony's role to be the mouth of the band and his writing is the direct extension of his personality and experiences. I listen to the RHCP since Calrifornication and I honestly can name only a couple of songs that make sense. He is wellspoken and really likeable, but let's not pretend he is doing something extraordinary with the lyrics. He even forgets them at lives. It's a recurring thing.
@@emile5921 Yeah, I agree to a great degree, although I also think he can come up with well written lyrics if he really tries but his choice to not try is what, imo, betrays his lack of interest in being a person who honestly wants to be decent because there's a lack of introspection there and that is troublesome for me as a consumer of RHCP music...
You said his writing was a direct extension of his personality, that was exactly what I meant to ask. Thanks for being specific about it.
Man, that pause when Flea talks about Hillel😔
It saddens me, interviewers asking that, knowing they will never get over him
He looked like he was on the verge of tears
I was going to cry, so deep😍
You could see himself holding back the tears so hard
I was all like”oh no don’t cry flea!
"It takes faith, and it takes work, and it takes sacrifice".
I knew Anthony and Flea were married really.
Chad smith is a silent killer. I literally don’t think I’ve ever seen him miss a beat. Whether a jam session or performance. Top 10 ever.
A very, very loud hard hitting killer that is really good at it lol
He is the anchor of that group for sure. Drummers don't get enough credit.

I feel so bad for chad. He’s gracious about it, but I’d be so sick of the Will Ferrel references 24/7
Man Chad Smith just has to be sick of the whole Ferrell thing... he is an awesome drummer and deserves much respect
I think he just finds it funny
Maybe you should post a video about the beatles, but not even mention paul mcartney.
they mentioned.... Know... Show Must Go On... Not soley with RHCP, with EVERYONE ON THIS PLANET!
I guess that is a reference to John Frusciante? Seriously, that dude is probably the best guitarist ever.
"I don't think that it's possible to make good art without profound pain. For me I want to feel everything..." I have so many things I want to say to this, but it would take too much time. Thank you.
I like seeing how comfortable josh has grown around people and the crowd, he seems like a really good guy
''I don't think it's possible to make good art without the pain''. - Flea
Broke my heart when Flea got choked up about Hillel
I was a young man when they were a young band and I wasn't crazy for them, now at age 60+ I absolutely love them.
Me too!! Just saw them for the first time live in Orlando and I've been obsessed ever since!!
Same here. As I've aged I see how true to themselves they are, how genuine they are, and that's beautiful. They have the courage to be exactly who they are. Love it.
Go off of man stay off your lawn
@@DR.DisInfect What?
It was kind of rude that the only thing they asked Chad was about the Will Ferrell thing. I imagine he's pretty sick of that and would have liked to have talked about something else.
@@LJP12330 Hey! hope things are going well for ya. God bless!
Flea - genuine. I cannot imagine him being malicious.
Watch The Big Leboski lol
I was really hoping they’d mention John somewhere in there
Growing up listening to this guys!! The RHCP have a place in my heart always and forever!!!
Same here. Not only a great band, you can see they really are good friends of each other. And thats refreshing, because thats not very common with bands that make hundreds of millions.
Same here! Found myself crying over these minutes!

* *Doque Che Cultura* * - Every member of the RHCP's would sell all their left testicle to OPEN for Iron Maiden, on a Maiden World Tour (with Bruce as pilot). They'd be allowed decent seating on the aircraft, I'm assuming.......Then again (thinking back) I was told that Slayer (WOULD NEVER) open for another band. Really? - They licked the boots to tour with Maiden and would gladly do it again. I know, I was there and still have the ticket stub.
I bet they think Frusciante is Klinghoffer and not a completley different guy.
The Krinklebein ha!
Lmao some people actually do 😳

“I don’t think it’s possible to make good art without profound pain.”
Flea
man whether u love the Chili Peppers or hate them u gotta admit, nobody sounds like them and their very unique with their sound and stage performances.
i saw these guys live at this grungy, dirty little venue in downtown Los Angeles back in 1986 when they were still just a local L.A band. we were blown away, and i remember saying to my girlfriend, "these guys are gonna be huge one day". turns out, i was right
Wow! I saw them too maybe a year or so before that in some grungy little venue. I think it was in orange county. I was born & grew up in OC but we moved to Alabama in 1980. I was back in Cali visiting and my childhood friend took me out and somehow ended up there. I got their first album when it came out and have been a lifelong fan ever since. I wish I remembered more of that experience but I certainly was was impressed with their unique performance and energy. I too thought "wow! I just want to see more and more of this" (they haven't disappointed!)
Memory Lane...
I'm so glad they're healthy, that John's back and that they continue to grow and are such wonderfully creative human beings.
I'm 18 and I've been obsessed with rhcp for months on top of months. Their music is amazing; and not to sound like a cliche, but their music is constantly saving me. Helping me through the days, with passion, poetry, love, and sound. It's amazing. God sent :)
Same. I am 34 and it still helps me to this day. It isn't just their music, it is their constant struggle to just live and do it right. It is inspiring.

One of the only bands who's members are almost equally recognizable and carry equal weight. I didn't think I liked the sound of AK's voice for years but the older I get, the more I realize...there could be no other sound of the RHCP, it simply has to sound that way and I wouldn't want it any other way. Flea is the madman that is usually reserved for the drummer, and one of the most influential bassists of all time...Frusciante is the genius who single handedly took them from good to iconic and Chad, while being Will Ferrel, is also rock solid and underrated as a drummer. Not too many bands have all 4 members that could be guests on Kimmel or Fallon by themselves...
One of the last true mega star rock bands and the more that time goes by, the more I realize just what I was witnessing with them, how rare it is and how great they are
I saw them in Brisbane in 2004 and I was so stoned I couldn’t move. Sitting in the front row center of the seating section elevated to near stage level, my friends and I stood out like sore thumbs. Motionless. I know at least Anthony saw us because he kind of paused and looked straight at us with disapproval. Best show ever!
Edibles?
That way you.....?!?!?!
@@johnkiedis27 Nah it was purple tho
How can you not even mention JF in this?
The Slane Castle Gig/DVD was their prime time. Unbeatable, Iconic Live Gig that right there.
Dude check out Pinkpop '06, in terms of vibe, it's like the sequel to slane castle. Mindblowing! Literally had tears flood down my face in the overloading, awesome musical energy. The way they improvise is something special.
The intro jam to Slane Castle is one of the most underrated, iconic riffs of all time. Any time you're with a bunch of musos having a jam, start playing that riff and you will see every RHCP fan's eyes light up, it's so good. Also, the outro jam to Throw Away Your Television - they were on another level, absolutely incredible.
Best version of Zephyr Song imho. Especially the mid-solo
Woodstock 99 is their best gig
Man, i love Frusciante. Always.
William Jensen Me, too! 😊
John
I don't know how this video isn't pissing off more RHCP fans. An entire 3 minutes alone of this is about Will Ferrell and Chad and another few just on Anthony's model girlfriends, but literally highlights nothing about their music and the height of their career (early 90s - mid 00's). Not even a single word is mentioned about Frusciante, you know, the longest serving guitarist, close friend to the members, most talented member, the man behind the bands 20 best and most popular songs and who was arguably crucial in the its modern day success. Its outright disrespectful. Its clear that the lazy Sunday Night writers probably spent 5 minutes researching before forming this shithole of a story.
She asked the most boring questions ever. “So you guys just did what you wanted?” Like bitch of course they did
I know
@@EWBLIVE They're talking about a different guitarist here. Frusciante didn't die.
Mainly the reason why I began watching this. Sad. Seen it a million times... nvr giving credit were credit is due.
Love Johns work but he left them abruptly and years later they welcomed him.back but it's time to focus on the now. They as a band get emotional especially over Slovak. Slovak was a.brilliant contributor and John emulated him. Interviewer s should lay off the past painful times it's obviously still raw fire flea.
I know people always asking questions about John and they might not be comfartable about this, but john is the reason why people see RHCP as a "rock legend" today. Almost all of the songs you used for this video are made with John. At least you should've mentioned John a little bit, he was the essence of the group and i don't know why the Chili Peppers are afraid of using his name at the interviews
Barış Dincer they arent, they have talked about him and his departure several times during interviews, flea talks about him in the rock and roll Hall of Fame induction. I guess its got to be a really anoying and repetitive set of questions anyway
People seem to forget john does not *Want* to be talked about. there is no wierdness on there end, you have to remember john wants to be so far off from "Commercial music" that he dident show up to his own awards ceremony
"comfartable" That's a new word!
"i don't know why the Chili Peppers are afraid of using his name at the interviews" - Because they know their music isn't as good without him.
Flea shows what it means to be a bass-player in Rock´nˋRoll. He brougth the bassplaying to an extraordinary level. Thank you flea.
Saw them in Melbourne 1992. Man, such a joyous, crazy, intense time! Never forget that gig....
I love how Anthony describes his experience with fatherhood. It's happy.
I remember being a teenager living off my McDonald’s job mostly starving most days but Blood Sugar sex magic was always playing on my little radio I found at a thrift store . These guys was always there in my life through all the good and bad times . Since summer of 1994 I’ve had a crush on Anthony and been a fan of their music ever since. I wish they knew how many people go through dark times in their lives and under the bridge is playing in the background somehow giving people hope .
That was beautiful
Your my age
how relateably sad. feel for you love. and yeah they certainly evoke all sorts of feelings within me too
Right
i love these guys so much, you can see just how HUMAN they really are
He was mentioned. But not explicit. Those pieces of music and video do the job. It's so huge no words could describe what they've done together. Thank John, it will stay with us forever.
I love RHCP!!!! Been listening to these awesome guys for 30 years. Their music got me through some really good and also really bad times!
Anthony isn't lying.. I was at a show where he was sick & not only did he do the show.. he did every song on the set list + some
I might be just a fan but when it comes to my hero’s from my coming of age, I feel connected to them. So when it comes to Anthony missing a show I look at it like I’m glad he’s taking himself cause losing him would almost feel like losing an old friend. Definitely someone who’s art has been with me through a lot of hard times, helped me through it all. Always excited for new RHCP’s albums and live shows
You are my Angels, 15 to 45 fav. band ever. After a massive stroke, your music helped me learn to speak and walk again. I was born with EDS and your strength and sobriety and lyrics are nothing less than divinely majestic. My dreams coming true to go to MPLS concert after years being outside lollapalooza on a bench alone listening
Wow I am glad to hear this,,,from you,Thanks so much for your sincere love and support for our music this shows your a strong die hard fan...your special..Have you been to any of our shows?
John Frusciante has always been the architect for RHCP's only really effective albums. Their other albums are good, but pale in comparison to those which have had Frusciante's guidance.
I don’t know, I really really loved the last album
AMEN
1Javichr it wasn’t terrible but it doesn’t come close to the classic albums
So true
Whoa. Pale is like the perfect word to describe ‘em. Bang on!
Frusciante is what got me hooked on RHCP. His talent is what sets the feeling and vibrations that this band gives you from his iconic riffs to his incredible solos. This video would never have existed without John.
If all you got from the band is Frusciante's guitar, well you re missing on a lot of beautiful things, the rhcp sound is dominated by the bass, Chad's drumming is exceptional, and Anthony's one he'll of a poet and entertainer
The fact that they didn't even mention John Frusciante in this 20 minute expose about the band is just straight up disrespecful.
What a time machine, I can place a peppers' song to so much of my life. I am eternally grateful to the band for a beautiful soundtrack to life.
Glad they still wanna keep doing the music.
Rhcp is the rolling stones of their time, one of the best bands of all time
I completely understand why people are upset at the lack of mention of John. He is incredible, and honestly the reason that most fans started listening are his riffs. But, let’s show Josh some love too. He kind of gets forgotten about, or considered a replacement for John, but really he has contributed a lot to group and doesn’t deserve to just be known as the guy that replaced John. In some ways he has held the group together over the past few years.
All of the members contribute something special to the mix - themselves. True themselves. I think that is the number one reason bands stick around for the long haul.
Just shocked to know these guys are all older than me lol .They started when I was born! They saw the 70s. They even probably met Prince. I was, however born into the greatest Era of music.
My favorite band of all time ❤️
Oh god, This is beautiful, I'm crying, RHCP is my favorite band, Keep rocking
Flea is such a warrior and a well spoken gentleman
Anthony a true patriot and a survivor.
All round born to be entertaining musicians, thank you for the music.
love these guys! could listen to Anthony and Flea talk all day... the best of humanity!
These guys made my childhood, they don't even notice
Finally they're coming to Australia. If i don't get the tickets i will be so sad.
Hey +Krishna Raj Rai. I saw them at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. The seats were near the back. The majority of the show was drowned out by screaming chicks mid-concert. No seriously. Throughout the whole concert in the middle of every song. Constant screaming. If they were floor tickets it would have been less of a problem. Just letting you know.
@@jasonjackson3114 atm I'm more concerned of even scoring a ticket. I'll definitely try to get a good area, thanks for the advice.
These guys have to be one of the most polarizing bands I know. Most people either love them or hate them. I always liked them, until I heard Uplift Mofo Party Plan. Then I loved them.
Flea is my favorite. My favorite bass player in the world and I love that he’s so raw and funny and energetic. Like they have all this money and his teeth are all messed up. But I like it because it’s relatable in a way?
I really love the RHCP and it's awesome to see them like this now.
this is by far one of the best rock bands to ever hit anyones ears. anybody to disagree needs to rethink breathing.
Glad he 's gotten better health wise
I looked after Chad on Hayman Island around 19 years ago. He's a fucking legend. Wanted to party with the hotel staff the whole time he was there. Awesome dude. Incredible musician.
I saw RHCP back in the days of HIllel twice. They were incredible. Wish I had brought a camera (it took planning in those days of film). They did cool songs later, but that early TRUE first punk/funk incarnation was something special never to be repeated. HIllel was a seriously funky guitarist with a great sound and some great leads.
Why is it John Frusciante’s departure in the band wasn’t even asked? Smh
Have you never seen a video about that? It's like one of the most asked questions, SMH
Frusciante is the Best thing to ever happen to Anthony, Flea, and Chad.
didn't that happen ages ago, as aristotle said, i'm sure there is footage already on that subject, i hate watching people ask the same old crap about subjects that are 2 or more years old.
John=GOD
because it happened 10 years ago or something. Its pretty unrelevant.
Love the interview by Sunday Night program. I can't wait to see them play in Melbourne, Australia.
The Aussieness of the interviewer got the best out of the band and the interview. Credit to her. Great job.
For me, Red Hot Chilli Peppers ruled the 90's and beyond(as well as some other bands I like). There is a timelessness in their music that I do not find today with many modern artists.
Very well said! I am 52. Same age as John. Grew up with them. They have been the soundtrack of my life.

Blood Sugar Sex Magic was my first c.d. It has been taken or given away several times since then. I love that record, it's timeless. Thanks to these extraordinary men, music has been a constant positive in my life. No matter what
