Reverse Sneezing In Pets

  • I finally got a video of a doggo reverse sneezing! You guys have only been asking for this video for about a year, and I’ve only been trying to make this video for like, 2 years! I can’t thank my lovely actress, Lilly, enough for her commitment to the role!
Now, typically reverse sneezing will resolve either on its own, or with one of the two methods shown in the video. It can look pretty intense too (falling down a bit, eyes super wide or slightly rolling to the back of the head, etc.), but even those intense episodes will generally resolve without veterinary intervention. But if you are concerned, you can always bring your pet in. We may just pat your pet on the head, give’em some chin scratches, and send them on their merry way!

The correct technical term for this outburst is "Sniffy Fit". As lifelong property of multiple Shih Tzus, I can assure you they are correctly called Sniffy Fits.

We experienced this a couple months ago and called the vet in a panic. They told us it was reverse sneezing. It stopped on its own. Our boy just has a long snoot.

WOW so that's what my dog has been doing for the last 10 years. I thought it was asthma or a sign of a respiratory infection, but the vet always said he was healthy. Thank you for the info.

Yeah my vey missed my dogs for 5 years and she was actually diagnosed with asthma, but the specialist just diagnosed her with a floppy larynx which was somehow missed on the original X-ray.

Picking up my dog, Swiffer, and placing him in front of a water bowl will pretty much always get him to drink, and immediately stop his reverse sneezes (especially post kidney failure… baby boy is ALWAYS thirsty!)

You're not going to believe this: I literally had just opened YT on my pc, my cat walks into the room, and as if on cue, begins reverse sneezing! So I stop what I'm doing to watch her and ask if she's okay, include an "Awwwe, poor Meezie", wait for her to finish, then watch this video!! This happens more often when the pollen is high (for me as well 😆). Thanks Dr. Bozelka!

…good timing, our cat just got diagnosed with reverse sneezing (“mostly”) on Friday/today. (Labs and X-rays came back with no infection today.) We have some behavioral issues to fix before going after the root cause of the reverse sneezing, but since we already ruled out infection, it’s likely mild asthma or allergies. And this IS the cat who will find dust, should dust ever exist. So my vote is allergies. Be interesting to try these reset techniques on him!

I lovingly refer to this as "having the snorts".
It usually stops on its own without intervention, but I would definitely intervene if it's been going on for over a minute. The dog is compulsively taking short inhales during these episodes and can end up light-headed.
I had a dog that was prone to reverse sneezing (and he wasn't brachycephalic) and I knew to intervene as soon as the episode started, because it always went on for quite a while. Pinching the nose to block the nostrils was also my go-to move. Leading them to swallow afterwards is also a good idea, because the sneezing can start up again.

Dude, I wish I'd had this video like a year and a half ago! The first time my Frenchie had a reverse sneeze it scared the hell out of me! I thought she wasn't able to get enough air. I stumbled across the term a few months after her BOAS surgery and Google informed me of the little hack to stop it. She gets them more in the warmer weather or when she insists on playing with my guinea pigs' hay.

Our younger whippet has a fit at bedtime a few nights a week, and in the car if he’s excited. Usually massaging his throat helps. It’s not completely inhaling though. He has snorked out a wad of booger on me. I was a little grossed out but he seemed to feel better. And really, if the worst thing I have to deal with is wiping off whippet snot, it’s a pretty good day.

My bengals do this occasionally. Cats I had previously never did. I read it can be related to having a hairball. It's the saddest noise in the world, but then they swallow and continue to do whatever cat stuff they were previously engrossed in. Vet was not concerned.

My 21 year old cat does it but it stops when I make her purr (I pick her up she purrs!). But yes this is the only cat I have ever had that does it so I thinking it's an age thing with her.

    • @khills
      @khills 2 місяці тому +4

According to my vet, it’s a LOT more common in dogs, but it can happen in cats. Owners often dismiss it because it does sort of look and sound like a hairball, but it’s not.

I've never seen anything like it either, but one of my cats started doing this about a year and a half ago. Could never get her to do it at the vet, so they brush me off. Finally got them to give her antibiotics and a steroid shot which cleared it right up. I'm gonna try this massage technique. Much cheaper.

My pug gets scared with both of those methods. My vet said that the stress makes it worse for her. He suggested that I leave the room because he thought I was also causing her stress. I asked a few questions and he said that worse case scenario she would pass out and resume normal breathing. I now just tease her about being a honking goose and a silly girl since pugs are hardwired to make you laugh. It seems to distract her enough to stop it. I have not tried to blow in her nose though 🤣🤣🤣

Ooooh so that's what it is. My family had a carin terrier with allergies for years. He would make this noise every so often and we assumed he just had a stuffy snout and was trying to clear his sinuses, per what we were told by the shelter vet tech when we adopted him ( he had a little bit of a kennel cough).

My dog had this and it turns out she has a floppy larynx that was made worse by allergic rhinitis with an underlying infection. Her floppy larynx was missed with an X-ray 5 years beforehand when the reverse sneezing started and was diagnosed as asthma, but the specialist vet diagnosed it a few weeks ago when she was intubated for the scope and she could see the larynx collapse with her breaths.

My Beagle, he passed recently, did that. I would hold his nose and it stopped. Several tries was often necessary. Do you know he started to hold his own breath when I reached for his nose, after awhile he seemed to do this for himself when a backward sneeze started. I am hoping my beagle mix, who also has frequent b-sneeze attacks can learn this too.

Sounds rather gross saying it but I would do anything for my babies. My neighbor and his Pit Boxer were visiting a few weeks ago and she started doing it so I blew into her nose, I don’t know who was more surprised the neighbor or the dog. Stopped it, and he was so grateful he didn’t know what was going on or what to do for it and always forgot about it while at the vets.
