Where was I? As a huge Phillies fan, I sat on the couch watching the game, frustrated that they kept leaving the bases loaded and not scoring. Then the news spread, and the game didn't matter. The Phillies and the Mets united - we weren't rivals anymore, we were Americans! Our Phillies lost in extra innings, but the US won!
@@blackairforcekaito say we weren’t united back then is revisionist history. While there were arguments and disagreements, it was nothing like what we’re going through now. The citizens of the United States were very much united back then.
@@Ivan.A.ChurlyuskiThere is no "we". They call one person racist, and you know who it is, so stop playing dumb unless you want people to perceive you that way.
I personally found out from John Cena, “we have caught AND compromised to the fullest extent, Osama…bin….Laden!” Feels like an acid dream but also a core memory of my childhood
I still get chills every time I see clips from this even though I was a child at the time of the 9/11 attacks and couldn’t grasp what was even happening.
I’ll never forget watching this game live! The game was so long and so boring but my boyfriend at the time was there with friends & I was trying to spot him on tv. Bizarre connections: - The announcement was made during the 9th inning, tied at 1-1 (9/11) - The color commentary, Bobby Valentine, was actually the Mets manager at the time of 9/11 & I believe was the first sporting event to happen after 9/11
I remember that episode of smackdown. Lillian Garcia crying so hard while singing the anthem and the whole arena just happy to be alive after such a crazy week. I think it took about a week or so for any other sporting type events to happen because everyone was being super cautious of gatherings
I’ll never forget that night. I remember watching the game as the news was breaking and we all changed over to the White House press conference and watching the celebrations break out across the country. Such a beautiful moment in history and something I don’t know if we’ll ever feel again.
Why are these two Brits admired? Because they are gentlemen. They have the drive to learning anything without embarrassment. They found a pitching machine in the UK. They don't curse and they don't condescend. Great podcasters. Although, they must adopt the exciting Detroit Lions. Win or lose, one pride. Honolulu Blue & Silver!
I still remember exactly where I was this night. My band was playing a show in Wilmington, NC. I’m a veteran, and spent time overseas, so when we found out what happened, my band decided that I would announce it to the crowd (we were the last band to play that night), so we came onstage, I had a shot in one hand, a beer in the other, I told the crowd what happened, downed the shot and chugged the beer, then we played our set. I was supposed to be one of the drivers to get us back to Raleigh, NC that night (2 hours drive). Needless to say, I had several drinks bought for me that night and I didn’t drive. I’ll never forget that night for as long as I live. Just like watching the events on 9/11 unfold which led me to join the military. Great reaction, man. Keep up the great work!
Great video guy's. I sensed some discomfort about a controversial subject (joy about a death). As a retired firefighter which I was on 9/11 I felt justice had been served for 343 of my brothers. How old were you guys in 2001?
Justice was definitely done, I (Nick) was 15. I came home from school and mum had it on the TV, I sat there for what seemed like hours just watching in disbelief, I 100% had to visit ground zero when I went to New York earlier this year!
The Mets, Phillies and Braves basically share a three way rivalry in the NL East pretty equally since each fanbase are by far some of the most passionate in all of baseball. I’d say most Phillies and Braves would say the Mets are their biggest rival, while Mets fans would probably be split between Phillies/Braves depending on their age/location.
Congrats on 30k lads! Proud to have been here from the very beginning, your passion for sports and learning shines through in every video and it's why I'm proud to support you guys. Here's to the next milestone!
Another interesting event you should watch was the live film of a major earthquake that hit near San Francisco just before the start of a World Series game in Oakland.
Really the only other major event going on in the country was WWE's Extreme Rules PPV. At the end of the night, John Cena came out and announced Bin Laden's death to the crowd. Still one of the most surreal things I've ever watched.
12:07 To answer your question, yes. Last season, Seattle lost to the Astros in the playoffs (ALDS) after Jeremy Pena hit a walkoff homerun in the 18th inning. The game ended 1-0. No score for 18 innings! The Astros completed the sweep and moved on to the ALCS to beat the Yankees in a 4 game sweep.
This still makes me weep. I wasn't watching the game. I was driving and the announcement flashed on a highway sign. I was on an American Airlines flight when the attack occurred and all planes in American air space were grounded as soon as possible. If you have never seen how every place a plane could possibly land was turned into a parking lot for planes, you should check it out. At least one was grounded in Canada, where the passengers were stuck for days. The Canadians really came through to help them.
As many as 238 planes were grounded in Canada. 47 were diverted to Halifax, which is a fairly small airport and doesn't have anywhere near the capacity to handle that many flights, but they somehow managed. I remember seeing a special on TV about it. I think there was a miniseries and a movie about it, too.
Thank you. I couldn't remember the details. I remember the sight of my plane grounded with many others and having to stay on it for more than an hour without having much of an idea of why. Then I had to find a way to get home two states away.
As a Mets fan, I personally mark the Phillies as our co-biggest rivals with the Braves with the Yankees also there as not necessarily a rival but the team that everyone hates and for whom we despise their success.
Hello fellas, this is my first time sitting in with you today, thank you for allowing me to do that! I enjoyed the time I spent here with you both so I subscribed and left a like for you while I was here! Loved your reaction to this!
Being from Philadelphia and being a Phillies fan, it is tough to say what the Phillies biggest rivalry is the Mets are certainly up there on the list but I feel the Atlanta Braves are the Phillies biggest rival, at least at this current moment. It will go back and fourth between the two, at the time this video was made the Mets were the Phillies biggest rival.
Mets and Phillies are probably each other's biggest rivals. The subway series rivalry(IE Mets vs Yankees)is a bit heated too, though as a New Yorker I would argue both respective teams have more of a rivalry with their divisional rivals than each other(the Phillies for the Mets, and the Red Sox for the Yankees). So I would say your assumption of the rivalry is correct. Realistically in the North East most if not all of the major cities are all within 5 hours of each other by car/train, which is not very common for North America. So the rivalries between teams from Boston all the way down to Washington DC are pretty big. The area is referred to as the BOS-WASH Megalopolis, it is where a large portion of the US populace is located. From NYC, Philly is only 2 hours, Boston 3:30, DC about 3:30-4, etc. Most of this corridor is linked by rail as well unlike a lot of the USA, so there are a lot of transport options and movement of people back and forth between the cities and regions etc. The NHL really took it to the extreme by having 6 teams all within the area in the same conference, 5 of which are even in the same division. It is just one of the few regions in the US where states are small enough and major cities are within close enough proximity to one another where you will actually see away fan sections etc in professional sports. That is less common in other regions of the US on the professional level, though not entirely unheard of.
Having it be a New York team is just perfect. Would have been cool if it was in New York, but Philly is pretty close by and has as much historical significance as any city in our country. Fantastic place for Americans to come together
d say either Philly and new York would be a more intense a reception since one of the planes went down in pa as well, it made the whole thing way more personal for both new York and Philadelphia
There was a 14 inning game this year even with the ghost runner, but yeah it’s a lot rarer nowadays. Some of my favorite memories of watching baseball as a kid was my dad letting me stay up late to watch the 16, 18 inning games. I love those games.
Guys, biggest Jays fan you’ll ever meet here. I was just at the Jays Red Sox game 2 weeks ago. Went 13 innings. Jays walked it off in the bottom of the 13th
I was about 15 and some of my friends were attending the game. Baseball was pretty popular because the World Series a couple years earlier. I was very jealous. It was passed my bedtime 😂 all of us started texting each other my friends at the game stated live streaming. Everyone in the city came out onto the streets 😂 in the suburbs not so much!
Since the ghost runner on second base to start the 10th+ inning is the player to commit the last out of the previous inning- many refer to that base runner as the “zombie” runner- he came BACK from the dead😅
Everyone remembers where they were when that happened over here. I was not at all watching that game. I lived in Louisiana at the time. However I can definitely remember running out to the streets and hugging neighbors. We were so excited that we ended up going out and partying until the early morning hours. I didn’t know how much of a relief it would be to finally get him
Even though it would've been nice for this game to be in NYC, there still was plenty of reaction from there to see. What I remember most from the Big Apple celebrations was a guy holding up his iPad that had a black screen w/ white lettering saying "Obama 1, Osama 0!".
It was the only game in the entire nation being played. When the announcement was made, the score in the NINTH inning was ONE to ONE, . . . . . 9/11 and, it was the New York Mets.
I remember watching that game. It was how I learned that he died. It was surprising to hear a "USA" chant break out and not know why. Players aren't allowed to have phones with them in the dugout, which is why they didn't know what was happening when the crowd already did. WWE was running their Extreme Rules PPV that same night. I was watching both. After the PPV, John Cena can out to give that announcement to the crowd. I'd argue that the Braves are the Mets biggest rivals now, but they definitely have a long rivalry with the Phillies. This isn't the only time the Mets have been associated with 9/11. I recommend looking up when they hosted the first major sporting event in New York 10 days after 9/11. It was a big event for NYC. The biggest highlight being Mike Piazza's go-ahead 2-run home run in the 8th inning.
Mets and Phillies definitely have a significant rivalry, especially when both were good in the mid-late 00's. But I'd say personally as a Mets fan (and I think the Phillies fans would agree), the Braves are the biggest rivals for both teams. If you're a (football) Giants fan in NY you may hate the Phillies more because of some residual hatred of the Eagles, but the Braves being so dominant in the division historically means they're prob the main rivals right now. But all 3 hate each other big time.
I think you’re right as far as the braves being the top rival for both the Mets and Phillies but the proximity of New York and Philadelphia plus the residual rivalries between the giants and eagles makes it a little more bitter
I'm a Phillies fan and while I recognize the Mets won that night, I would like to point out that the Phillies won the division with a 102-60 record while the Mets finished 25 games back in fourth place with a paltry record of 77-85. Any time you finish with more than 100 wins, you are going to the playoffs and you are a good team. This season, the Atlanta Braves have the best record in baseball (currently at 102-56 with 6 games remaining and headed to the playoffs), the Phillies are in second (89-69 with four games left and headed to the playoffs) and the Mets are, once again, in fourth place with a paltry record of 72-86 with four games to go and headed home for the off-season. The more things change...
So technically speaking they were not the only “sports” event WWE was actually having a PPV event the same time and John Cena actually broke the news to the crowd after the main event
Definitely one of those "where were you when" moments. I remember clear as day watching this on a barely functioning 12 inch tv in my freshman year dorm room haha
This was a bitter sweet night for me. As a combat veteran who served in Afghanistan I had just moved to Georgia from Italy. My wife was in Texas because she was doing job training. She was also in the Army. She was National Guard and I was active. Anyway, I had learned earlier that day she was cheating on me and I told I wanted a divorce. Later that night this happened. Crazy timing.
I remember that night well. My father, a former navy service man cheered, my mother who used to work in manhattan fell to her knees and cried with joy, I was calling my friends and yelling over the phone to anyone who would answer, "WE GOT HIM! WE FUCKING GOT HIM!"
It’s a shame they didn’t give the Mets radio play-by-play of the announcement, as it’s the generally considered the best version (or Phillies radio). This video was an ESPN production and they don’t like to acknowledge anyone else.
I don’t recall what I was doing when the announcement came out but my sister-in-law texted and gave me the news! She said she wanted to make sure I knew since I lived in NY on 9-11. I spent the rest of the evening thinking that my friends can now rest in peace. Phillies and Mets are the biggest rivals in the National League. Yankees and Red Sox are the biggest rivals in the American League…just FYI.
That night is still so fresh in my mind. I couldn't sleep so I turned on my tv. The president came on tv to announce that we got him. I couldn't sleep the rest of the night. The adrenaline was pumping. The next day at my college program for adults with disabilities everyone was cheering USA USA and wearing patriotic shirts. What a night to be an American!
A few more things to react to are, Seal Team Six rescues Jessica Lunch, another is Rescue of Jessica Lynch. The 911 boat lift, Operation Yellow Ribbon.
I went to HS in the SF Bay Area during 9/11 and I will always remember one of my classmates had to be taken out of class as her dad was a passenger on that flight.
the two teams playing represent the two communities directly affected by the attacks and where the game is being played is only three hours from where flight 93 crashed
I think 14 innings will happen even with the extra runner. It probably won’t happen often and probably will be extremely rare to go past 15. It would have to happen in the playoffs
That was the day Obama won re-election (a year and a half before the election itself). It may have also been the last time the country was United in any way. Definitely check out the Mike Piazza home run in 2001. It’s a good prologue for this video. Both events were Mets related
@@DNReacts Yes! I remember watching live. I was jumping on my bed and then I saw him and was screaming "Jimmy!!!!!". Which I'm sure my neighbors appreciated given the obscene hour! 🤣
You don't get a runner on 2nd in extras during the playoffs. So it's more likely in the more important games! This is bc the nature of the rule is simply to shorten the games/innings pitched during an 162 game season.
I lived in a town of 30,000 that night. in a few minutes the streets were clogging and horns blaring. Every flag that anyone could get in their hands was out or waved.
Y, the Mets and the Phillies were og rivals, that said as Philly has native, we usually act as if we have a rivalry with every team, their grandmothers, and their dogs.
Its so strange, but watching this is bringing out a lot of emotion for me. I feel a buzz in my body like the day I had heard the news. Baseball and 9/11 are tied together in my mind. 9/11 happened right as the playoff race was heating up, and the attitudes towards teams such as the Mets and Yankees embodied goodwill towards NYC. The attacks delayed the games for almost 2 weeks, and as a result, the playoffs and World Series lasted into November. Almost all of our Fall was a time of meloncholy and uncertainty, but baseball was a bright spot in our lives. Guess who made it too the World Series that year....the Yankees of course. While it didn't end in story book fashion for them, it still was a great series that went to 7 games. For fans, what more could we ask for.
What made this game so significant was these were also the first teams to play after 9/11 happened. Plus one of the hijacked planes crashed in Philadelphia ❤
I was at the corner of lake Murray Blvd and Navajo road in San diego coming home from softball, blew through a red light to cause a scene at home. Ill never forget that (pun not intended)
I was only 6-7ish and I remember everyone driving around with American flags cheering and happy and as a kid I looked up to the military I still have a usa patch a soldier gave I turned on the tv and saw that osama bin Laden was killed and now I realized why everyone was happy and waving the us flag and I was happy to be part of the crowd
Mets, Phillies and Braves are all big rivals to each other. Right now Phillies and Mets fan probably hates the Braves equally right now. Cause the Braves have win the division 5 years in a row and won the world series in 2021 and has the best record in baseball this year. Also look up Braves lead off hitter Ronald Acuna Jr. He just made history
I've genuinely enjoyed watching your videos. It's been a fun trip watching you learn American sports. But if you stray into politics that may produce rifts you're not be prepared for. Politics is bloodsport in the US. This is just a friendly heads up. Of course, it's your channel and you can take it any direction you want.
I’d say the Braves are the Mets biggest rival although it’s been a bit of a one sided rivalry. Phillies might consider the Mets their biggest rival, but honestly the Braves might be theirs too. Essentially everyone in the NL East just hates the Braves.
12:38 If only the last gathering at the White House had been like this. Around 13:16 knocking each other's teeth out??? Ask an Eagle or a Flyer about knocking each other's teeth out. Gently joshing.

Last year the Seattle Mariner's and Houston Astros had an 18 inning post season game with ghost runners in place. It was amazing baseball to watch!
The extra innings runner is called the ghost runner, but also colloquially called the Manfred runner. That might be the phrase you were looking for.

That’s a good point
It’s not as big as the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry
I think you’re right as far as the braves being the top rival for both the Mets and Phillies but the proximity of New York and Philadelphia plus the residual rivalries between the giants and eagles makes it a little more bitter
This happened a month before I graduated high school. I was playing my Xbox 360 when I got the notification. I still remember the smile on my face
12:18 Fun fact: the longest professional baseball game (it was a minor league game) went 33 INNINGS.
This my fav baseball video. I've watched it so many times
Yankees/Red Sox is the more historic rivally, but Mets and Philles is the more heated rivalry.
So technically speaking they were not the only “sports” event WWE was actually having a PPV event the same time and John Cena actually broke the news to the crowd after the main event
She said the only *major* sporting event
The only non-scripted, competitive sporting event 😉
8:23 yeah the players had no clue because, while in uniforn, they are not allowed to have their phones.
Makes sense, appreciate the comment!
I remember that Sunday night.
I can imagine it was a crazy night!
Definitely one of those "where were you when" moments. I remember clear as day watching this on a barely functioning 12 inch tv in my freshman year dorm room haha
@@zacharyliles8657 lol yeah. Pretty amazing how these impactful moments are so solidified in our memories.
30k will feel like such a small milestone in a year or two :) congrats
Hopefully so 🤞 Thanks Seth, appreciate it 🙏
I agree saying it should have happened in NY. But it Happened in Phillie were the Declaration Of Independence was signed.
And one f them did go down in pa
2:31 as a Mets fan yes can confirm Phillies are our biggest rivals
Regarding the extra innings Cleveland and Houston went 14 in in Cleveland earlier this year
United Airline Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville ,Pennsylvania on September 11 2001.
Brought down by the passengers! Such brave people that don't get the recognition they deserve. ❤❤❤
I went to HS in the SF Bay Area during 9/11 and I will always remember one of my classmates had to be taken out of class as her dad was a passenger on that flight.
yes it was brought down by the passengers who fought back!@@mcm0324
This year, Arizona and Chicago went to 13 innings lasting 4 hours 24 minutes.
the two teams playing represent the two communities directly affected by the attacks and where the game is being played is only three hours from where flight 93 crashed
I’d say the Braves are the Mets biggest rival but it’s pretty close between the Braves and Phillies
One of the four hijacked planes went down in Pennsylvania, so OBL's killing was significant to both the Mets and the Phillies.
I was vacationing in DC and proposed to my girlfriend. Walking back we had Obamas motorcade drive by
I hope she said yes 🤞
The photo you used as the thumbnail is my cutie pie nephew showing his U.S.A. t-shirt! ❤
Is it really? That’s so cool. It’s a great picture!
@@DNReacts Yes! I remember watching live. I was jumping on my bed and then I saw him and was screaming "Jimmy!!!!!". Which I'm sure my neighbors appreciated given the obscene hour! 🤣
@earthling8585 yeah I’m sure they were fine with it 😂
@@DNReacts 🤣 I believe you are correct! I was in Philly! 💞
You don't get a runner on 2nd in extras during the playoffs. So it's more likely in the more important games! This is bc the nature of the rule is simply to shorten the games/innings pitched during an 162 game season.
As an American watching this I have goosebumps!
I lived in a town of 30,000 that night. in a few minutes the streets were clogging and horns blaring. Every flag that anyone could get in their hands was out or waved.
Yeah, runner on second in extras IS called a ghost runner. Manfred Man is also acceptable in most circles.
The rule book refers to it as an automatic runner.
Y, the Mets and the Phillies were og rivals, that said as Philly has native, we usually act as if we have a rivalry with every team, their grandmothers, and their dogs.
12:20, probably not, combine the "Ghost Runner" rule, with the new Pitch Clock, and 14 inning games will probably never happen anymore.
The runner on 2nd rule isnt used during the playoffs so we will certainly still get 14 inning plus games but they will be much rarer
As a Phillies fan I hate the Mets guts, I’m glad they suck
Bro nicks face when he says the correct term 12:21
Awesome video.
Thank you as always Christopher, really appreciate your support 🙏
I was at the corner of lake Murray Blvd and Navajo road in San diego coming home from softball, blew through a red light to cause a scene at home. Ill never forget that (pun not intended)
That's Ryan Mason the was A HELL OF A RELIEVER
I watched WWE at the time. I remember John Cena coming out and breaking the news, and I think my dad was watching this game.
Happened day after my bday, great belated birthday present!
You should watch the short documentary of George W. Bush throwing the first pitch at Yankee Stadium in the 2001 World Series.
Gotta do Bush throwing out the first pitch after 9/11
I remember whe this happened I got teary eyed when i found out we got bin laden
I think the Atlanta Braves are every NL East team's biggest rival.
Mets and Braves are probably considered the bigger rivalry these days. Though, Braves and Phillies are right there.
well thats a picture worth a thousand liv... i mean words 1:02
I fucking miss him. Drop the mic Northern California No Woke here.
I hope we are still this united deep down
I’d say the Braves are the Mets biggest rival although it’s been a bit of a one sided rivalry. Phillies might consider the Mets their biggest rival, but honestly the Braves might be theirs too.
Essentially everyone in the NL East just hates the Braves.
I watched John Cena announce Bin Ladens death live on WWE ppv extreme rules 2011!! One of the most insane nights I’ve ever experienced 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
The braves are the Mets biggest rival it's close between Yankees and Phillies for second.
12:38 If only the last gathering at the White House had been like this.
Around 13:16 knocking each other's teeth out??? Ask an Eagle or a Flyer about knocking each other's teeth out. Gently joshing.
Phillies 🤘🤘 Seal Team 6 👍🇺🇸
Rivalries:
Yankees, Red Sox
Cardinals, Cubs
Giants, Dodgers
