My mother ran Paycheck's tour merchandising for a couple of years. I smoked the very first joint I ever smoked in my life with Johnny on his tour bus when I was 14 years old. As he put the joint out, he told me that if my mama ever finds out that he got me high, he was going to chain me to the back of his bus and take me on a wild tour of the country. Johnny was a good guy. He could be the best friend you ever had if you were a good person. And he could be the worst enemy you could ever have, if he thought you were a bad person. He was a Hell's Angel and he would behave like one if he felt the need for it. God bless Johnny's soul. The world needs more people like Johnny Paycheck.
@rickyking1790 I just asked my mom about it. She said that he was definitely a member of Hell's Angel's. He just didn't talk about it a lot, because he didn't want it to mess with his career. But he was 100% a Hell's Angel.
The story on the shooting was that he was headed home and stopped at a little bar in Texas if I remember correctly. Some guy recognized him and wouldn't leave him alone while he was drinking so he pulled out a 22 pistol and shot him in the head but the guy survived. Paycheck spent several years in prison for it and got released in the early 90s. He was also in the Navy when he was younger and got sent to the brig for beating an officer. He was definitely a real outlaw and lived the type of life he sang about
I thought it was over a dispute about a hat. Either way, watch Mike Judge's 'Tales From the Tour Bus,' because the Johnny Paycheck episode is excellent
It didn't happen in Texas, it was a bar fight right here in my home state of Ohio. It happened in Hillsboro Ohio and he spent 22 months in prison before being pardoned by the governor. Ohio is also Paychecks home state. Paycheck always claimed it was in self defense and the bullet grazed the guys head. He wasn't seriously injured.
@@dianaspears571 Yep! You got the story correct. Larry Wise was bugging Paycheck & insulted him according to Paycheck who pulled his 22 and meant to fire in the air to scare him but the bullet grazed Wise's head.
He was a hell-raising mo-fo, but talented musician. If I recall, he used to be in George Jones band in his early years, so I bet that was an education right there.
Im 58 y/o and been loving this guy for a long time. my Momma had a " honky tonk" in Bacliff, texas I grew up in . Rough necks, oil refinery workers the whole nine.. sawdust on the floor, pickled pigs feet at the bar, and a pay phone with a hundred thousand tales...love that a cool dude like this "feels" it ....hell dont get me started on R & B either cause that was da shit when growing up in Houston in the late 70's early 80's..sooo sweet to see the appreciation from both sides..
I hope you will react to the song that I think was his masterpiece, "Old Violin". He was older when he did that song. It gives me chills. It's a good one. If you do, the one that says "original version" is the one. He sang his ass off on that recording. I usually like live versions of songs the best, and a lot of his are great. But this recording of Old Violin is haunting.
Johnny did a concert in my hometown. The promoter hired the Hells Angels to keep him on ice and to show up to the gig sober and on time and devoid of cocaine for a change. They only gave him burgers and beer till show time. He was escorted to the gig and showed up on time and sober and did the best concert he'd done in years as the story goes. Apparently Johnny liked the Brazilian Marching Powder quite a bit and was quite the A-Hole when on it.
I love these videos because it introduces country music to everyone. Anyone that listens to music not labeled or in a box earns my respect. Awesome video.
This is a country classic, the rhythm guitar and the pedal steel were just killin' it, I played this song in a band last week. Try "Colorado Cool-aid" and "Satin Sheets" they're dope.
It's very obvious through the raw sharpness of his lyrics, his look, his facial expressions, and his mannerisms that Johnny was... 100% about that life. This man didn't just sing about prison and violent street life. He lived it at a time when it was super violent. Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash helped to get Paycheck out of prison. Attending hearings and parole board meetings for him and paying for lawyers and advocates. Paycheck could sign about Jesus, Mom and prison in one song .. and you knew he lived it.
Johnny sit the guy in the top of his head .the guy survived. Johnny was in the navy when he was young and he hit his officer in command and got thrown in the brigg
My Mom is from Manchester Ohio, Johnny was from Greenfield Ohio close by. Farm country Johnny was in a bar in Hillsboro Ohio and got in an argument with a man there and Johnny pulled a .22 pistol and shot him in the head The man lived but Johnny did six years at Lucasville pen Johnny died broke, and his lifelong friend George Jones paid for his plot and funeral He is buried next to Jones
A quarter lb. of coke was his personal stash. Wild as a Comanche mule. He shot that dude accidently. It was his bass player. He never carried a gun & he said he didnt know why he did that night. He has some really pretty songs if you care to check him out. I like your reactions.
In December 1985, Paycheck was convicted and sentenced to seven years in jail for shooting a man at the North High Lounge in Hillsboro, Ohio; he had fired a .22 pistol, and the bullet grazed the man's head. Paycheck claimed the act was self-defense. After several years spent fighting the sentence, he began serving his sentence in 1989, spending 22 months in prison before being pardoned by Ohio Governor Richard Celeste.
I can identify with;:"They put those handcuffs on me, how I fought to resist, but they just clamped them tighter, and feel that metal bit into my wrist, they took my belt and my billfold, finger prints, and a profile of my face, then they locked away the only hell my momma ever raised."
My momma told me not to drink it or date her, but I did, and trouble ensued.. I can relate to the lines where they put the cuffs on and take his belt and billfold, and they locked away the only my momma ever raised.

He shot him with a .22 and the bullet grazed his head. It happened right here in Hillsboro Ohio just 30 minutes from where I live. He served 22 months in prison before being pardoned by the governor. It was self defense. I don't know where these wild stories come from.

The story goes by everyone in the bar is that guy was drunk and being a ass and Johhny had a hair trigger temper anyway. I mean he did 2 years in a Naval brig for nearly beating a officer to death. But this guy in the bar kept pushing it and Johhny finaly snapped and BANG. The guy kept running his and Johhny asked leave me alone he didn't and paid the price

Paycheck had serious drinking and drug issues in late '70s. He was in Ohio and probably drinking. Got in argument with a guy in the bar and shot him. Not sure but think that's the story

So you might already know this but I’d love to tell you anyway. I love Johnny Paycheck, all of his stuff. The funny thing about Johnny paycheck and quite a few other very famous country dudes is that all of their songs that were hits were actually written for them by black R&B dudes. I believe most of Johnny paychecks were written by a dude name Swamp Dogg and another dude named Gary US bonds. I love all of Johnny Paychecks stuff but the stuff you can tell he wrote himself is super simple and kind of garbage. My favorite song he wrote himself is called 15 beers. It’s stupid but it’s really fun drinking music. It’s just crazy to think that Johnny paycheck would seriously be a nobody if he didn’t have multiple way more talented Black people backing him up that ended up getting no recognition.
"Don't take her she's all I've got", was written by the two men you mentioned, and they admired Paycheck. Swamp Dog was his friend. Donald Eugene Lytle began guitar at age 6 and was performing by age 9. He left home in his early teens and performed as "the Ohio kid". He made it to Nashville and CA and sang, played bass and steel guitar with many very famous artists. He was sought after as a harmony singer and was an excellent bass player. Also, he had perfect timing and pitch. He backed Faron Young, then changed his name to Donny Young. U
As Donny Young, he recorded the finest honky tonk ever done. He was George Jones' front man. Some say he taught Jones his distinctive phrasing. He wrote many well crafted songs for himself and for others.
