I saw Waylon in 1973, 2 years before this. He opened for the Grateful Dead, which is why I was there. Waylon impressed the hell outta me that sunny afternoon. He was on fire. I regret not seeing him perform live again. I tried though when he performed as a Highwaymen but those concerts were sold out. I suggest you react to his classic "I Don't Think Hank Did It Thus Way" , preferably the live version as a Highwayman.
Yayyyyy!!!!! So happy you listened to my favorite Waylon song!!!!! This live version actually is short a verse from the studio track but it’s still fire! Now you got to check out “Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way”, “Are You Ready For The Country”, “I’ve Always Been Crazy, and “I Ain’t Living Long Like This”.
It is called ""OUTLAW COUNTRY"" - Waylon is the GOAT of Outlaw music!! He is my absoluter favorite singer & I have been listening to him since 1972!!! I am 74 & played his concert today!!!
Waylon wrote and recorded some great songs, but for many he was best known for the theme song & intro and outro for the TV show "Dukes Of Hazzard". "I've Always Been Crazy", "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way", and "Ramblin' Man" are quintessential Waylon. He also did duets, like "Storms Never Last", with his beautiful wife Jessie Colter.
Waylon was a little bit of a rebel. He didn't let any record label control his music. Total respect and love.❤❤ "He's a Taker" is the song that turned me to country when I was 17. I had to correct the song title....The Taker.
Classic Outlaw Country! The best! We had Waylon’s Greatest Hits 8-track (yes, 8-track) and we wore it out while playing pool in the basement in the early 80s.
Saw Waylon in concert around this time. it was this " Outlaw " movement that hooked me on " real country music ". Other songs from Waylon to give a listen to: " Amanda ", Are you sure Hank done it this way", and " Only daddy that'll walk the line"...
He has a really good country ballad called "Amanda" I love the lyric "Amanda light of my life, fate should have made you a gentleman's wife. I got my first guitar when I was 14 now I'm over 40 and still wearing jeans" also "good hearted woman"
I was fortunate enough to meet Waylon in Vegas in the 80s and he talked to me and my Wife for about 20 minutes 😊! It was the highlight of my life, been listening to Waylon since the late 60s!!! Greatest singer evva!!!
Waylon is my favorite artist of all time! His sound is so unique and his band with Ralph Mooney on the steel guitar to me is untouchable. Glad y’all liked it!!
Great covers of many of their songs by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristoffersen and Johnny Cash as the Highwaymen at Nassau. Maybe Me and Bobby McGee because Kris wrote it.
Wow, two country songs in one day! Yay!! For the Highwaymen, check out “Ghost Riders in the Sky”, “Big River”, or “Good Hearted Woman”. They pretty much did all the hits of their respective solo artists, so anything you pick will be fire!
Waylon was the King of Outlaw Country. To understand the Outlaw Country music movement, you've got to understand the era. The Vietnam War was just ending and some of the veterans felt a connection the old west outlaws. And Country artists were experimenting with new sounds. Mixing in some Rhythm and Blues with the traditional Country sound, while changing the lyrical content to more rugged and rough topics that resonated with the returning veterans, who were coming together in various biker clubs. So, the lyrical content became a story song about their every day lives, mashed up with the life of a country artist on tour. And there you have the creation of the outlaw Country music movement of the 70s. It really was an amazing era for the country music genre. I grew up listening to it, and as a child, I hated country, because all the adults listened to it, while I wanted to hear AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynyrd etc. But it grew on me and to this day, I absolutely Love outlaw country.
Ralph Mooney is playing the pedal steel guitar and he is hands down the greatest steel player EVER. Waylon was a huge fan of Ralph's. Every song from this set is fire. Look for the It's Not Supposed to be That Way/Slow Rolling Low video from this same concert. Ralph's playing on Slow Rolling Low is phenomenal and Waylon smiles and gives him a whoop. Ralph plays the songs a little different every time.
The guy sitting down is playing a Steel Guitar. a slide guitar is where a person uses a metal tube over one finger and slides it back and forth on the neck of the guitar. Bonnie Raitt plays a slide guitar.
So many good Waylon songs you gotta check out "Only daddy that'll walk the line", "Are you ready for the country", "Waymore Blues", "Good ole boys", and one of my favs "Slow Rollin' Low". Big Waylon fan thanks to my younger brother who is such an Outlaw Country fan he just named his first kid Waylynn, she's just 6 months old now but she already is a music lover.
This is the 1st country song I heard that I fell in love with (other than anything by Johnny Cash) I was in my early 20’s in the early mid-90’s & hated country music….my buddy moved backed to the DMV from Texas & played this for me & 🤯🤤just the authority & the …..🤔….the balls,f•ckin legend 🖤
The best Waylon Jennings song will always by "Good Ole Boys" the theme song to the tv show Dukes of Hazzard. A great song for a good, clean show set in Georgia. I highly recommend both the song and the tv show.
It wasn't about Tina, he wrote it after he seen her sign, and said that was a good name for a song..Waylon wrote it..and Willie got credit on it because of the word he put in it. Country artist should be thankful for what Waylon did for them all including Willie because none of them had the balls to do what Waylon did and there wouldn't be no Willie as a singer if not for Waylon..
Well I guess Waylon lied about it, in his interview he did, that I watched. The song came from a story written in the news paper. He called Willie and ask him to come in on the song with him. Again Waylons words. The article was a controversial story about the ups and downs of Ike and Tina
First concert I went to was back in 77. My buddy's mom and aunt took us to see Waylon, me and my buddy's hero. We were in 7th grade at the time. He's still me and my buddy's hero. You need to check out Waymore' blues. That's definitely my favorite song of Waylon Jennings.
Waylon Jennings❤ you gotta try "are you sure Hank done it this way$. There are several audio only videos with Waylon, but look for his live performance version.
The steel "slide" guitar has its roots in the Hawaiian culture, and today the types played are varied. Love Waylon. Willie left Nashville and pulled Waylon with him. Together they helped transform Austin, Tx into the "Outlaw Country Music Capital" of the world. 😉♥
That song is pure ear candy. One of the first hard driving outlaw songs ever…recorded back in ‘73. Waylon sang from his soul and you hardly see that these days.
It was Ralph Mooney playing the "Steel Guitar". He retired from Buck Owens band and Waylon talked him into joining this band and he helped set Waylon's sound throughout the 70's. I first heard Waylon in 1965 and loved his music to this day. Try "Are You Sure Hand Done It this Way. It was his breakout hit. Also Honky tonk Heroes from 1973
Seen Waylon everytime he got within 100 miles or so from the 70's until he passed. That's Ralph Mooney playing the pedal steel guitar. Waylon said he was the best steel guitar player in the world. Waylon called him Moon.
Guys, the instrument you refer to as a "slide guitar" is actually called a pedal steel guitar. It has knee levers and foot pedals that the player uses to bend notes. The player must use both hands and feet - as well as both knees to become proficient at it. Also he controls the volume with a foot pedal. It is one of the hardest instruments in the world to get really good at. (I tried for a while a few years back and finally gave it up.) So, needless to say I have great respect for anyone who can really play it. There are only a few masters of the instrument in the world. A friend of mine whole plays it really well once told me that it takes at least 20 years to learn. Just thought you'd like to know.
That was not a slide guitar. It was a pedal steel. Very different instrument. The pedal steel helped to give the older country that distinctive "twangy" sound.
Yeah I always enjoyed Steve Young. Saw him perform in the early 80s in Knoxville, TN, and I own a couple of his albums. Some time in the late 90s I heard that Steve Young would be appearing on the David Letterman Show. So I tuned in to watch him perform, only to be disappointed that there was a football player by that name. Steve Young died in 2016.
Waylon started Outlaw. He can sing anything. His ballads seep into my very soul! His guitar playing is great. His music is pulsating! My favorite male country singer!🔥💙
Can’t go wrong with a Waylon song. He was such a great singer and entertainer. Jessie Colter and Waylon have a few duets. She’s beautiful, with a beautiful voice and he sure loved her. ❤
Awesome song and singer, too bad he's gone but not forgotten. I love all of Waylon Jennings music plus his son Shotter is awesome too just like his dad and mom Jessi Colter.
My Dad played slide bar Steel guitar. My parents professionally toured most of my life, with my Mom singing while Dad played Steel. I was raised in a tour bus, sleeping in a top drawer when I was a baby.
Waylon created a genre of music all his own ,for the simple fact is that nobody,& l mean nobody can replicate his sound/his music. No one can come close to Waylon Jennings.Waylon stands alone on what he created. tands alone on
Gonna throw my suggestion into the ring: The Conversation by Waylon and Hank Williams Jr. Great story and and great vibe. The official music video is a fun watch too.
Thank you for doing this, as Waylon is my favorite artist of all time. I was blessed to see him perform 3 times back in the day. This was right around the peak of his career, which was basically the early to mid 70s before he started losing his voice. The studio version was released in '72 or '73, and is worth looking into as he has stronger vocals on that version. Oh, and if no one mentioned it earlier the pedal steel player was Ralph Mooney (no time to read comments right now).
I love Waylon - especially when he sings with Willie Nelson. Another bunch of good bad boys are the Allman Brothers (you may have already done these guys) with Statesboro Blues or Not My Cross to Bear. Love you guys - you make my days always have some great music.
The steel guitar player is Ralph Moony, Probably thee best steel picker around. He was a true pioneer and played with Waylon, for many years. Love your channel.
Great reaction. Waylon is the definition of Outlaw. My favorite songs of his are "It's Not Supposed To Be That Way", " Honky Tonk Heroes" and "Dreaming My Dreams".
It's definitely worth listening to the studio version. I'm a big fan of a good harmonica, and this song is one of my favorite harmonica songs ever. This live performance doesn't have it. It's still great, but it changes the song.
Back in the day (about 40 years ago) most of the guys named their pickup trucks. On the bug shield of my brother's truck was "Lonesome, Onery and Mean". He still has the bug shield but sadly the truck doesn't run anymore.
"Silver Stallion" by the Highwaymen A steel guitar is tuned to an open chord, and the player has a metal bar in his left hand which lets him change chords just by sliding the bar up and down the strings.

A favorite Waylon song similar to this is I Ain’tLiving Long Like This. Another great one is America. For Highwaymen, I second any song in Live from Nassau to see them performing and interacting.
Waylon was one of the best! Waylon and Willie still ranks in the top couple concerts ive ever seen no matter the genre!
Anything from this show is absolute fire. Waymore in his prime.
I listen to this concert almost nightly
I saw Waylon in 1973, 2 years before this. He opened for the Grateful Dead, which is why I was there. Waylon impressed the hell outta me that sunny afternoon. He was on fire. I regret not seeing him perform live again. I tried though when he performed as a Highwaymen but those concerts were sold out. I suggest you react to his classic "I Don't Think Hank Did It Thus Way" , preferably the live version as a Highwayman.

I like Waylon Jennings. I've listened to him from my teenage years. One of my favorite country music artists!
"I've Always Been Crazy" would be my choice for your next Waylon song.
I absolutely loved Waylon Jennings! He was the epitome of Outlas Country!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

No that's not what he was known best for but it did sell the most at the time since he was the Bailadier and singer for the show..
Also, Waylon's Buddy Holly Medley. Waylon was the Base Player for Buddy's Winter Tour. The day the music died.

Lol we did too but in the mid to late 70s ✌💖☮
Gotta love Waylon.... he was awesome live.
You still gotta check out his wife, Jessi Colter - "I'm Not Lisa!" Another great live performance.
One of the greatest country singers, period.
R.I.P. Waylon
Gone but never forgotten!!
Rose in Paradise and Amanda are two of my favorites by Waylon Jennings.
My favorite Highwayman!

Anything Waylon is always good... and Waylon Live is even better
Waylon's best song... & he's got a lot of great ones. Glad you shared. RIP

Waylon, one my dad's all-time favorites is also one of the few country artists that I always enjoy listening to.
One of my late husbands favorite songs. My husband was a huge fan of outlaw country. The steal guitar featured here is a pedal steal guitar.
Thank you so much! This is such an Important Waylon song! This is so Waylon, strong vocals and his distinctive guitar!
Got to hear the studio version.

That’s Ralph Mooney playing the steel he is legendary. Helped pioneer several styles of country before a long career playing with Waylon.
Waylon is one of those artists that sound great if not better live!!! The harmonica is deep!!
The man on the pedal steel, the late great Ralph Mooney. You hear “pick it Moon..” on a lot of live recordings. Mr Mooney was the GOAT
