From Chennai, India. We too have them in India. Most of the level crossings are replaced by Road over bridges.

You have one like this at Clonsilla railway station with an iron bell in the guardhouse, and the guard pulls the string every time the train comes... and that is just so lovely to watch.

Brings back memories of hanging around Rathbane level crossing (now unused) waiting for cargo trains from Foynes and Mungert. Always wanted that job. Thanks for sharing. Loving the channel as is my 5 year old.

Ashtown station i would guess. Filmed therevlast Tuesday. Clonsilla and Ashtown on the same line are the last 2 manually operated crosdung gates in Dublin

I think this is quite an impractical design. Even if done manually, It will be easier if the gates just went up and down in the either side of tracks to stop the vehicles. The train can be stopped using a Signal; the gates are not needed to stop the train.
