My Italian mom would sweeten the ricotta cheese with sugar. The sweetened ricotta would add tremendous contrast in flavor with the GRAVY! Not too much sugar. Our dinner guest were amazed at the flavor!
As a child of a American Italian home, please don’t rinse the shells! I drain & place them on a parchment lined baking sheet to cool & stop cooking. Then they are just right to handle & fill! We love this dish & have it each Christmas Eve with an antipasto! Merry Christmas everyone 🎄
How come you recommend not rinsing in cold water? I came across a few videos before this one instructing that we do 😅 and I just would like to know why they do the opposite
I also love the smell of freshly grated Parmesan. I haven’t made these in a couple years. I will get ingredients when I go shopping again. They taste even better the next day 🤗
For the first time in a very long time have I seen such joy explaining a very simple dish filled with such compassion. I'm making this for my son whom just got home from camp and he and I both will be happy. Thank you so much and love that your a left. 😊❤🍲
Thank you for such an inspiring recipe! I made your stuffed shells today, using fresh oregano and some freshly grated lemon zest for the ricotta, and just because I had them anyway, I slipped artichoke hearts between the shells. The result was divine!
PASTA COOKING HINT!!! When baking pasta, cook it for HALF the suggested cook time on the box and even if you think its not done enough the pasta will be perfectly al dente when your dish is done. Don’t be stingy with the marinara remember the pasta acts like a sponge in the oven!! Happy cooking everyone from this crazy Sicilian to you’all!!
i have made stuffed shells so many times and tons of different pasta recipes. tonight i made some stuffed shells and with your tip , which i’ve never done before, and now i have a whole dish of hard undercooked stuffed shells 😭😭😭 i can’t put in any longer or it will burn its already started. so sad and i was in a budget ! definitely do not recommend this tip !! ive always followed his video exactly and came out with amazing shells. wish i would’ve done that this time 😭
I’ve been watching these videos for ages and only now realized John is left handed. I’m left handed also but learned to cook from my mother in the 70’s and since can openers and other kitchen devices are generally right handed I learned to chop and do my kitchen tasks with my right hand.
I love this simple, fool-proof stuffed shell recipe. It's always so satisfying even without a meat main. And if we make our own sauce we can use some Italian sausage to rachet-it-up into a compelling dinner that is sure to receive high marks. I like to put my filling into a zip-lock type bag, cut a corner and pipe it into the shells.
Okay, I was literally looking up recipes to make jumbo shells yesterday and was hoping you would have a video but didn't, and it's like you read my mind! I'm excited to try this recipe, thank you for sharing
Looks amazing John! I'd love stuffed shells, and so many other pasta recipes. Nothing like cheese, tomato sauce, pasta, and other things! Thanks for this recipe. Looks amazing 😋😋
I made this for my dad’s birthday earlier this week and it was a HUGE hit. We devoured it all. It was simple to make but had maximum flavor. Thanks for the recipe!
I made this but changed it up a bit, my family doesn't really like marinara sauce so I made a Béchamel sauce and added Italian sausage I love your recipes keep them coming! thank you
Splendid recipe! Pro tip from an amateur: sprinkle just a bit of mozzarella and parmesan on the base layer of sauce before layering with the stuffed shells. Second tip: the chef used Rao's marinara sauce which can cost upwards of $10 a jar. It is very good, but a simple 4 ingredient marinara you can make from scratch costs 75% less and is just, if not more, delicious. Ingredients: One 28 oz jar of San Marzano peeled tomatoes blended until just short of perfectly smooth added to 3 cloves of minced garlic sauteed in 3 T EVOO. Season with salt, pepper (and a bit of sugar if you are so inclined). Bring to a boil then simmer until just thickened (20 minutes or so). The last five minutes of simmering, add 8 leaves of fresh basil. Remove basil before proceeding with the recipe. Thank you so much for all of your great recipes!
My mom only made stuffed shells for parties/holidays back in the day... I was up at 6am making them early so we could do yard work, been nibbling a couple here and there, hubby approved... This recipie is very good! I could only fit 23 shells, almost exact lol.
Hi Johnathan, I made this recipe for the first time a few months ago. It was the first time I ever made stuffed shells and this recipe was delicious so I’m making it again for my Mother and Sister. Thank you!❤
I love all types of pasta!!! This recipe reminds me of manicotti, with pasta being stuffed with a filling. When I made manicotti for my family, everyone loved it so I’m definitely going to try this recipe too! It looks delicious! ✨
I find a lot of recipes are basically the same just with a different pasta: jumbo shells, manicotti, cannelloni, even lasagna. I use the same filling base for all and every one of them is delicious
Thank you so much for this recipe. I buy these pasta shells all the time, but have never made this wonderful vegetarian option. I’ll definitely be cooking this for supper. Thank you from a sunny London 🌺
I’ve made this multiple times now and my family adores it! I’ve made manicotti in the past but prefer the jumbo shells as they’re so much easier to fill (I use a piping bag which I always have on hand) and manicotti shells are floppy and awkward. It’s been awhile but I’m actually making this tonight for dinner lol! Thanks for another great easy recipe. You’re my favorite UA-camr! ❤
I haven't had stuffed shells in ages. My great aunt had a recipe for spinach stuffed shells. It's basically the same recipe except using spinach to replace some of the cheese. I made it for company and at the last minute my SIL informed me her brother hated spinach. He ate one to be polite then asked for a second serving.
OMG I made a double batch today and your stuffed shells are totally totally totally amazing. I thought it was going to be too salty but the sauxe I used, traditional Prego, which is sweet, counteracted the salt and it is fantastic. Thank you for youtubing the recipe and I will use it forever and ever and ever.❤️❤️😁😁 and by the way, your directions were perfect!
I love everything you make..so happy I stumbled upon your videos..I will make this tomorrow for my Italian friends who will be visiting...hope to impress..
Watched your lava cake. And stuffed shells. Im a first timer. I like your videos. Thanks for helping me make m Valentines dinner. Your good in what you do
Hey John, thanks for another great recipe and I got some lg shells and everything else I need and I will make these and refrigerate over night and bake off Thursday. I think I will make a meat sauce for mine and can't wait to eat these. Love and blessings to you, Brian and boys.
I sub out cream cheese for ricotta since I just can't STAND ricotta! I also find breadcrumbs work well in the cheese filling. I got lazy last time and used my stand mixer for the cheese filling, working in half batches at a time and it worked just fine. The best part of this recipe is that it makes many MANY meals, perfect for freezing, thawing and reheating.
I love this recipe and have cooked it several times. However, I’m not able to get the jumbo shells so I substitute the biggest shells I can find. It’s still very delicious!
I have lots of recipes of yours saved to try and make hopefully soon but this is the first and it turned out amazing. Family loved it. It will be a repeat.
Wooow absolutely wonderfull and mouth watering recipe looks so delicious and tempting fantastic presentation feeling just heaven and very unique creation stay blessed
Please teach us how to make horchata! I remember your mom is from Mexico. Does she like it? Did you grow up drinking it? I’m from the U.S. but I’ve tried it and I love the flavor. I stopped at a gas station once while traveling that had “frozen horchata” in one of those slushy machines. I’m sure that stuff wasn’t authentic at all but I always wish I could have more 😂
Hello, John! I followed this recipe for Christmas Eve dinner, and they were delicious, and so easy to make, thank you! Looking forward to trying some of your other recipes as well, new subscriber here :)
Beautiful! Wonderful recipe, between shells or manicotti, it's hard to choose a favorite!😛 I've also stuffed them with spinach or Italian sausage (or both) as well. I love your recipes, but your pastries take the cake (pun intended😁). Your cakes are works of art!
I think he's a lovely very talented man good father I love watching every video he does even when I can sleep at nite I turn my phone on and just watch his play list xx
Lasagna seaside. I also add eggs to my filling. I use the same filling in other pasta dishes. Sometimes I roll it in Lasagna noodles or stuff it big noodle tubes.
you cook in such perfect relaxing way love the fact that you dont talk or add any disturbing music its just so relaxing to watch this

@@michellelyon3149 Ah, I see! Thank you so much :)
Thank you! 😊
Looks delicious. You can also try omitting the Italian seasoning and use freshly grated nutmeg. As a first generation Sicilian, that what we do.
Yes to freshly grated nutmeg! Thank you!
Thank you!
I’m first generation Canadian Sicilian, pleased to meet you!!!!
@@PreppyKitchen Did you use Rao's marinara? The label looked sort of like it.
I was confused as to why no nutmeg. That’s how I learned to make this recipe.
Thanks for bringing it up. ❤
I love stuffed shells! I put my cheese mixture in a pastry bag to fill the shells. So much easier and faster
I do the same with manicotti, can't imagine trying to stuff cooked pasta with a spoon lol. John, you have more patience than I do! Looks sooo yummy!
Same here... for Manicotti!
Smart
I also love the smell of freshly grated Parmesan. I haven’t made these in a couple years. I will get ingredients when I go shopping again. They taste even better the next day 🤗
Thanks Caroline and very true!!
