    It would have been easier to get the steering column surround off if you had pulled the knee panel first before removing the two pieces that surround the steering column. On my 2002 Ranger the back nuts holding the column did not unscrew. They are studs and the studs turned out, but they did not drop out. If you are turning your back nuts and they don't seem to be coming out you are turning the studs out. The studs are an external torx. You can put an external torx socket on them to hold the studs and use a box end or open end to unscrew the nuts. I used plastic compatible grease on the inside of my bushings to make them last longer.

    When l worked Ford parts every time l sold those bushings l gave them a quote on that tube and the shaft in the center of it. 30% of the time the person would come back.
