Very pretty location Thomas. E-Class is truly one of the best cars in the world now. I am fan of the Exclusive line. It is reminiscent of the old Mercs from the '80, and '90. God those were good cars. In both looks and build quality. Your smiles, and excitement in this review say more than words, and really explain how epic this car is. Like teenager in love, you just get overflown with emotions. I just adore this car. Elegant exterior, and otherworldly interior. E-Class sedan with few options on is my new dream car.

+1. .. Agreed. .. The E-Class wagon fitted with a traditional "Luxury" front fascia get's my eye. .. Better yet,, take a look at the currant S-Class front fascia. .. Wow, Powerful yet restrained. .. Elegantly simple. .. Very sharp front grill design.

I think the T-Modell looks nice!
Had I had the money, I would've opted for the Exclusive Line, with the designo (not ''disegno'', which is Italian!) Macchiato Beige/Sattelbraun interior package and dark brown linden wood veneer for contrast!
Its interior looks ace and the ''String of Pearls'' air vents make it look like a yacht's living room!
But I bet someone's going to have a heart attack once they spec all those nice optional extras:
the aforementioned designo Macchiato Beige/Sattelbraun interior pack,
the nice dark brown linden wood veneer (''designo Zierelemente Holz Esche, glänzend'' in German!)
or the designo Flowing Lines, for even more majesty,
the analogue clock,
the ambient lighting,
the active multi-conture seats for driver and passenger,
the Burmester High End Surround sound system,
the big 12.2 inch displays,
the Comand center infotainment system,
the Head-Up Dislpay,
the rear-seat entertainment,
the panoramic roof,
the auxiliary heating system,
the special acoustic comfort pack (since it's an estate, and a big one, the big empty space behind you enhances tyre-noise),
the air suspension,
the Drive-Pilot mated with the adaptive Multibeam led head- and taillights,
even the Macchiato Beige leather headliner!)!

With a big engine of course! Speaking of engines, will there be an E500, with the S500's 4.6 Twin-Turbo V8? I think it could easily fit in there! And since the 9G-Tronic has its gear lever on the steering column, Americans could love it!
Also, why does it still have the old 3.5? The 3.0 Twin-Turbo V6 should be in there, with its 333hp and 9G-Tronic, just like the C400!
As for the front end, both styles have their pros and cons:
The Avantgarde Line (and the AMG Line, with its lower air vents!) looks more athletic but the grille integration is not successful; it's too flat! I remember the W204 C-Class Avantgarde and it looked sculpted! It had some very nice detailing! The W213 E-Class sporty grille also looks a bit Korean or Chinese, like a Daewoo trying to be luxurious!
The Exclusive Line looks more majestic, more ideal to a T-Modell in my opinion, but some (not me, I like it!) might say its grille is too big (unlike the Avantgarde's and AMG's, which is too small, say I! I forgot that!)!
Also, the sensor cover in the grille is familiar from the S-Class, so I'm used to it! But I want to say that its integration in the MB Star (Avantgarde and AMG Lines) looks a bit better!

Yeah, that is a very expensive specification and I really don't see the point! 100k seems waaaay too much for a run-of-the-mill version!
I've just had an idea: MB is going to launch a new engine! It's called the M176, and it's a tamer version of the M177-M178 V8 of the 63s and the GTs! And, in the S-Class, it's going to replace the 4.6 Twin-Turbo V8! That new engine should be in a new E500, because there is a big gap between the E43 (400hp) and the E63 (571hp) - E63 S (612hp)!

However, IMO those rear reflectors are a big fail from Mercedes-Benz, since they are so exposed to damage while loading and I could bet they are not cheap to replace either.

Really great Review. Quite funny - at 36:28 you say, look at that camera resolution; but we can't see it! I like that! I also like and respect very much that you did not edit out the incident of the sudden 'brake warning' on the autobahn at 46:38 - very interesting. We're driving along in a silent relaxed car and whenever one of these systems works, everyone gets a shock, which I suppose is better than running into the car ahead! Question: were you on Adaptive Cruise beforehand, and did it not sense the distance and slow the car earlier? Great stuff. Keep up the great work. Many thanks, Thomas.

Hello Thomas. Do you have a E- class review of the previous model S212 T modell ?
Can you show us the front seat base extension movement? In my BMW comfort seat, the front seat base extension is a separate block, that moved toward the front, or retract. In this E-class, I cannot see there is a separate block in the front seat base, but there seems to be a seat base extension control. Can you show us how it moves?
If you change the Units between miles and km/h in vehicle settings, does the speedometer in the widescreen cockpit change as well, to reflect the change?

Really refined and beautiful in all respects. I would really be curious about a full-length regular C-Class estate review, to experience the differences in equipment and space. I was checking and I didn't see such a review, at least for 2017. I guess I am an estate kind of guy I guess.

Thomas - very nice to see your very details review on the e classe wagon! I will use this to show my friend the functionality, she just got a e classe sedan. I want to know how good is the semi autonomous driving. I drove a Porsche loader car Panamera a few weeks ago. I love the way it drives, very confident feel on the freeway. Tell me how is the Mercedes e classe drive, which model e classe would compatible to the Panamera base model ?

@@autogefuehl apparently so, older Volvo and Merc estates used to have them. Rear facing fold out 3rd row benches. Seems only Merc e400 in the US has them as standard now

T-modell dreamcar
I definitely like the exterior design of the luxury line the best... but paired with the AMG line wheels. I believe part of MB identity and uniqueness is the traditional ornament and nicer fascia. I know comfort wise, it is better with the smaller wheels. P.S. I CAN'T WAIT to see the new 5-Series and its T-Modell compared to this. Although, I would always pick the E. Also, new E-Class AMG AWD vs the new M5 AWD. That will be so amazing to see.

How would you compare the sound insulation of this E-Klass T-model (with sound insulation package) and the Porsche Macan GTS you tested 2 months ago (and you considered very quiet also, because you supposed it had the double glazing option also) ?
I own a BMW 35xD F11 5 series and sound insulation is very important to me.

Funny fact: those 4 air vents in the center console are made of metal/aluminium in the E-class. S-class has similar vents but they are made of plastic

What would you choose between the E-Klass T-Model 43 AMG and a Porsche Macan GTS/ Turbo/ (or even a BMW X4 M) ??? (relativelly equal prices presumed).
I'm interested in having a confort and quiet ride on normal driving, but a sporty reaction with some power when driving hard on motorway or small roads.

How about new engines, have you heard anything from MB themselves? The 3.0/3.5 biturbo V6 is from the M276 family, MB promised new modular inline 4 (M254) and inline 6 (M256) engines with new E-class. Well, the new E-class has been with us several months now and no mention of the new engines anywhere... wondering if MB is having some development issues?
Not that I have anything against current vee-sixes, had the opportunity to drive ML 350 petrol some years back and the non-turbo V6 was probably the best non-turbo V6 I've driven in terms of refinement and performance, very smooth and linear power delivery from idle to redline. Goes actually much faster than it feels, 350 diesel felt much stronger but speedometer hit the 120 mark roughly at the same time as petrol. Seems that diesels and their high torque can be a bit deceptive, always look at the speedo to get the real numbers.
But still I think that straight-6 and Mercedes would be just perfect together. :-)
You say its your favorite interior ever. Does that include the interior or the S65 coupe ? Thanks for another great review. I prefer the exterior of the amg but interior of exclusive .... Does meercedes let you make a mix of the two?
The S-Class does not offer as many animal-skin-free-variations like the E-Class. Therefore I prefer the latter one

Hi Thomas, overall would you recommend the air body control or the dynamic body control when speccing? We drive mainly on narrow, twisty roads, and so body control is very important for us, though ride comfort and refinement are also key. Which setup gives the better balance and is better suited to the car? Would the dynamic body control option make the car as dynamically capable as a 5 series touring with adaptive drive, or should we wait until the new 5 is released? Also what wheel size would you recommend? We are looking at 19 inch
19 inch should be maximum. Wanna keep the car for 10 years? Skip the air suspension. Lease it for 3 ? Go for it ;)
Autogefühl but would you recommend it over the dynamic body control or not for my situation? My sole concern is that the air suspension will reduce body control and handling performance
the pure air susp is focused on comfort, the one in the amg is still very comfy but a lil stiffer
+1. Agree with "Air Body Control" suspension option, however you're scaring me. * About 10yr's plus is our ownership practice - given the high expense level of these cars. * When selecting the Air Body Control option its service cost after 10 years crossed my mind more than once. * Fingers crossed.

I think the 2013 version T model still looks the best out of all the newer versions
Here is what I have found as far as I can understand the E class and the C class are the economy versions. Although what we can hear from most Mercedes of these classes are most similarly compared with the hybrid or electric vehicles which would be the new economy standard, for efficiency that may even be considered economy plus or a fossil fuel alternative. Especially because of the entry price level point, further compared on with the higher standard of engineering in all of the rest of the luxury sedans or the higher end AMG line.

+1. .. Having pre-purchase explored both estates at their respective Dealership's I'd say interior volume is a coin toss - interior space is about equal. .. However the E-Class estate over the Volvo V90 estate any ole day of the week for my money. ..
Having owned estate cars from both brands; E320 and 960. .. - Volvo's 4cly arrangement with both exhaust turbocharger and electric supercharging sparks service concerns. ..

I liked your review and your opinion on things you like/don't like....the soft close function (for me) is annoying when you can't shut a door "normally"
German engineering is world class. Our BMV (as it sounds when the mrs says it - ist Deutsch) 530D Touring doesn't like 3 kids in the back :-((( our car got old and she's soon 12 years old while the family grew - only one small problem with the car which was fixed with a hair dryer and some tape is a GOOD car (water in the central locking system)
The problem I can't fix is the width of the car - 2 child seats and a booster JUST about works but far from comfortable on long trips to Croatia..(9 year old in the middle) SO we came across the old grandfather car ;-) (Or Asian in the UK, or a big market for old Asiens haha) It seems Mercedes have shaken that image off well - but I do see still upa (grandad) in an AMG 500+Horse power (Ps to you) driving like he's Fred flintstone expecting to join the other farm traffic on the A8 (in his own time - and actually quite dangerous)
I think a test drive is on the horizon.

I'll do a review for free but with passion... I mean common guys BMW, Mercedes....ok Porsche is "Other" have you ever been in a merc on its 3nd engine in another country? I have and it's nuts - these guys change wheel bearings like we put on our shoes it's the norm after half a million miles!!. Mercedes hit the nail where VW (the peoples car) have sadly missed now. - overpriced and nothing really special in my view. AUDI - immage great for boy racers that can't actually drive that well due to inexperience and are interested in image over true performance - BMW the sweet spot but loosing market share to people like me - 45 - some money to spend on a quality high end FAMILY car to last another decade or more but not in the box (the one in the ground) enough to not want some Ooomph under the bonnet..
Double clutch wasn't VW? not sure... anyway I was in 14 different countries before 20 years old. Mercedes Is the choice taxi overall beating the Japanese market even.

As far as I know there is no replacement tyre available for the entire E-Class.

Trully wonderful car and as complicated as it gets. I prefer the "classic" Mercedes look with the visually pleasing iconic star; alas, some people feel that it is totally fine to snap the star off the hood of somebody elses automobile. Ugh! What do you think Mercedes should do to make the star undetachable? Rolls Royce solution (retracting Spirit of Ecstacy), stronger metal ornament ... or something else ...?

No specifics ...just new straight six petrol engines to replace the current V6 in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms. All car scoops pointed out that these new engines will come out with the new e class but somehow nothing came through...maybe they are still under development

I wonder whether RWD version has smaller turning circle radius than 4-MATIC. Mercedes has been known for that. RWD cars don't have homokinetic joints in the front which allows front wheels turn more (wider angle). Is it still the case with the new E-class? I own an older Jaguar, it's RWD but the turning circle is relatively large.
in general: nice styling like all new Mercedes but always these useless big rims nobody want to drive in the regular daily routine

A few big mistakes by Mercedes, due to over design.
First of all. killing generations by making the topline have this ugly big truck/lorry logo. It doesn't look sporty at all. It really shames the brand and tradition. Loved the E62 with the classic star in the hood. As many people suggest, make the truck front optional.
Second of all they made 3 versions look all the same. The design isn't that good, to me German design are about masculine raw lines, this car looks very feminine compared to the older versions. Especially with the amber lighting, and the interior that is way too curvy, just like women would design a Barbie car. Skoda is more German design than this girly car, so im looking into AUDI or BMW for the next car. Looks like AUDI is getting some masculine profiles back now.
Third of all the steering wheel is still offset from the center line. What does it take to correct this. As well as the cheap digital display. Come on.

But they made one great thing, for the first time they move away from the cheap squeaky crappy bench, to a real driver seat in the e class. Bravo. Well done MB. Put that seat in the W212 2nd edition an ill be back as a MB owner next time. I'm currently driving a E350 S212, with the German rock hard design, star mounted ON the hood and real exhaust pipes.
So im already excited to see the S214 model.

I would also like at least mentioning if the car supports Android Auto - sometimes it's hard to tell from the manufacturer's information.
Is the noise level in this car even lower than the S-Class or the Rolls-Royce Wraith?
From our subjetive perspective probablyyes. If you would test it with professional equipment it might change.
Sorry Thomas l have to disagree with you for a change, that dashboard /huge iPad is so bland and the piano black plastics look uber nasty lol apart from that awesome presentation,you really are best on the tube
