Another professional in-depth review Thomas. Also, thankyou for providing the links that helped give me the answers to my various questions. Your channel is really first class, I particularly appreciate your teams assistance, and your rapid reply and on point guidance, makes me appreciate Autogefuehl even more as time moves on.
I realise you were happy to help, but it makes me feel justified, In my subscription to your channel. I will now become a donor to Autogefuehl, as I can see your teams efforts in providing "Excellence," a real "Top Tier Service," in my opinion. Which goes far beyond the 99% of other Automotive channels. Again thankyou to your team, and to you Thomas. Sincerely, Mark.

Thank You for this review. I happy to get my E 220 d AMG Dynamic here in Thailand in august, even when the DRIVE-PILOT not available here. In a western country this is a good thing. Here it is better not to have, because here is an other kind of driving, mostly without makings on street

    Impressive review.
A lot is happening in the car industry right now... how long will it take for a person, without a driving license, to move around autonomously in his/her car, I wonder?
Talking to the car should not be that far from now neither. I think in the near future a person will be able to address his/her car and say 'Leave me here and park near by.' and then phone the car and say 'Pick me up where you left me.'
Beautiful car. Mercedes excelled in this series.

Drove this car e220d, on eco mode, 250 miles to Cardiff and back. Was stuck in a huge Saturday jam - trying to get to car park - got 50mpg overall ! Including cough (80mph) on motorway. This is a perfect car ; performance with economy. I can't trust the autopilot. But the 25 mins waiting to get to car park is a perfect use of the system, you can relax and let the car get you there. Pity north Americans think a 2 litre motor is a joke, it's not, and this one is better than the BMW which has lag.

Thank you for this excellent video, I've not seen your channel before so I've subscribed. I'm changing my car in March, I have a E350 2015 model, I think based on your video I will buy the E220 with the Driver Assistance Plus package - which is £1700 in the UK. I don't like how Mercedes (and other brands) make their advertising look like these advanced features are standard on the car and then you find out you have to pay extra for everything! But I think because I do a lot of Motorway driving, it will be perfect for me. I would be interested to see if rain/darkness/fog has any impact on the performance on the autonomous driving.

  • @wuokawuoka
    @wuokawuoka 8 років тому +1

Thanks for the video. For me it was especially interesting that the autonomous mode lets the car ride right in the middle of the lane. I shudder at the thought of cars driving like that in future. It would prevent me as a human to perceive the intention of the driver (ha, the car, really) in front of me.
As a human, I may tend to the left side of my lane more or less subconsciously to signal my will to take a left turn or to change lane. Following an autonomous car perfectly occupying the middle would make me - as a human - a worse driver. I'd be deprived of information and out of nowhere, that thing in front of me would change lane.
Car to car communication done via special ad-hoc networks won't help either because that would imply that I - as a human - had to integrate with a computerized driving environment. Even without discussing percentage of cars with car to car communication, I want it the other way round. I want autonomous cars to integrate with humans driving cars.
The same goes for stopping because traffic in front slows down. As a human, I do not only care for the car directly in front of me, but - if ever possible - cars before that.
You had the situation in the video. Obviously, autonomous cars are not good at that at the time being. What are the implications for traffic patterns as of now? Car to car communication is a way to solve that problem, but again the question arises, how can these systems integrate with a human centered driving environment? And how can slow adoption of those systems make traffic safer for everyone along the way?

Interesting video, yesterday i drove the Volvo V90 and it's autopilot was a disaster. I'll have the Mercedes in a few days for a drive and will see if its worth specifying over the normal radar cruise control. If the volvo is anything to go by, these current systems are just expensive and dangerous toys.

I would like to see a video where you just focus on how well the autopilot performs under various conditions. Don't take over, don't make excuses for it. Test it. And don't talk to fill the time. Edit it. And point the camera so we can see where it is driving. Tesla has difficulty with strong curves and curvy hills. Also sun in the camera and road obstacles like cones and road blocks. Some have reported that it's not stable on the road. Try snaky forest roads.

on 6:10 mercedes saw car coming in left line and instead off just wait to that car pass him like tesla do and then change line he completly turn off autonomus drive..that is just stupid and dangerous.
I dont see 2 much point off this autonomus drives in this stage..they are more dangerous then you have benefits ..because you must be always 1000% ready to take over in milisecond and that put more stress on driver then just driving...only thing that i would use is adaptive cryise control

  • @sonnenscheinsommer4754
    @sonnenscheinsommer4754 7 років тому +1

Why I say: all the autonomous driving systems are not good (on motorway or not): because you never know BEFORE in WHAT situation it makes the wrong decision. You don't know in WHAT situation, so, if you don't want to end in an other car or on a tree, you have to stay ALLWAYS COMPLETELY attentive - the same way, as if you would drive completely your own. But when you make the experience, that the autopilot is doing it right 100 times, you trust it more and more and you get then a little less attentive. But how do you want to be able to SUDDENLY make a correct quick reaction (steering or so), when the autopilot SUDDENLY makes the wrong decision? It works only 100 times but one day it wont, and then? As you don't know before how the autopilot will decides things - in all this constantly changing situations on a street - how do you want to know before in what situation you could trust the car for a couple of minutes? It stays unclear and so that system is not safe (or statistically correct: sometimes it makes the driving safer but sometimes - as you cannot see problems coming, but when you start relaxing and trusting the system - sometimes it's a worse safty because of this sudden failures.

Why pay for an autonomous driving that requires you to keep touching the wheel?
    Waste of money.
People saying "it's to check if you're awake": sure, because if you're asleep Mercedes will save you by disconnecting the only system keeping you in your lane to allow your car crash on the truck/car next to you or into a ditch. Really smart engineering lol
An indoor movement detector might be slightly less stupid and monitoring other actions such as infotainment system interaction: if I'm browsing songs/channels or using the GPS, changing the safety distance there is a high chance I'm not doing it in my sleep.
If so, then I would bother getting their autonomous driving. Until then it is like buying a nice pair of pants with only one leg.

I would prefer E class over tesla.
First reason Mercedes has engine, tesla dont
Second it has safe and restricted auto driving, Tesla dont.

i cant believe no1 has written the reason as to why u should constantly grab the steering wheel. Its simply so that u dont make a habit out of the anomtous(not the correct spelling obviously) driving experience. If the guy from the video( havent checked ur name yet sorry) shows signs of his normal driving habit; wanting to break earlier for a better feeling when stoping for a red light, driving less 'dangerous'. He fights his instinct to intervene and drive like a 'normal human being'. i guess Mercedes 'self drive' is better than tesla, since tesla would probably be the reason u crash ur car once u drive another car and for a split second forget ur driving a 2002 car.

    hei,

@Autogefühl "Tesla system keeps the same speed usually when you set the speed" Really? You just tested the Tesla TACC in this video and the system also accelerated and braked: ua-cam.com/video/BiU4LcprwnU/v-deo.html

    • @autogefuehl

Yes it does that when a car is in front of you, my point was a) the traffic sign recognition and b) the recognition of upcoming obstacles/corners etc. which shall adjust the speed. Not sure how the update of the Tesla works meanwhile though

I've driven both cars and the E-Class is so much more quiet, you dont even have to compare. Maybe it is about the acoustic package that is optional with the E-Class and didnt go into this ranking. The E-Class is the most silent car ever in the interior, I have driven over 400 cars and there is no doubt.

Pretty much everything he said about Tesla is wrong. Tesla Autopilot does adjust its speed based on location, road conditions, traffic, etc. Tesla Autopilot does not make driving decisions (turns, etc.) based on GPS destination and route information. And did the car even steer itself at any point in the video?! Seems like all Drive Pilot did was drive straight in perfectly marked lanes. Really un-impressive.

Dream on! Mercedes are lagging behind just a bit with Autopilot (debateable) and definitely with the method of propulsion but in many other respects it Is Tesla that has the catching up to do.
