Matt and Trey said Barbara Streisand was the first celebrity they mocked that they actually disliked (with the ones before they were just having fun), and she had called the people of Colorado a bunch of hicks shortly before this episode was made.
It’s weird because she was criticizing an anti gay law. Matt and Trey have been pro gay rights since the beginning, it least I think (the big gay Al episode). So while I get that it’s their home you’d think they would at least in part agree with her.

I had to watch that three or four times because it was cracking me up so much. There are so many random details/references they sneak in.
Robert Smith actually voiced himself in the episode, and when Kyle says "Disintigration is the best album ever!" He went on to say that it's one of the greatest moments of his life to see, and be a part of

I just love the complete lack of effort for such a big guest spot. He delivered the lines over the phone in what was clearly one take. He was clearly just reading the lines for the first time.

"While Trey Parker and Matt Stone say their pot shots at celebrities are mostly in good fun, Barbra Streisand is one of the few they openly dislike. Her portrayal in this episode was due to her criticizing the entire state of Colorado for passing Amendment 2 by a slim margin. This would have forbade gays from being recognized as a protected class, though it was later overturned by Colorado's Supreme Court. Streisand lashed out by calling Colorado "a bunch of hicks" and publicizing a boycott of the state. Despite being opposed to homophobia themselves, they felt her reaction was unjustified which says a lot about how much they hate her."
To be fair, they have a point in criticizing her. By insulting an entire state for passing this amendment, she also insulted the people who voted against it and the gay people affected by this amendment. Not the smartest move on her part.
I'm relieved that, by South Park standards, they were relatively kind to Sidney Poitier. That man's acting roles were inspiring to many people.

Giving the practice of deciding an argument by repeatedly kicking each other in the nuts the name of a French military officer is the type of subtle brilliance that makes this show my favorite. That and the running gag of cutting to a field reporter that is identified by an increasingly absurd combination of random things.
Few details that may have been missed:
- Why is Kyle wearing his normal clothes in bed 😂
- When Cartman mistakes Babs entrance for the aliens returning and covers his behind 🤣
- Streisand and Sheila are voiced by the same actress 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I always see in cartoons that classes go on these little archeology trips. I would have loved to have one of those when I was a kid.
Doesn't matter whether we're talking elementary, middle school, high school, or college; nothing about school in real life in my experience ever had anything remotely comparable to any of the adventures and hijinks commonly depicted in the schools in movies and TV.
Hmmm, I forget what class it was in high school and what the main destination of the field trip had been, but we stopped at the park next to an iconic formation in the area for lunch (didn't go up the trail onto the formation, it was just to sit at the picnic benches near the start of the trail) while we were out... And that's the most outdoorsy field trip I can recall us ever taking in high school or earlier.
There was also a sorta field trip in a college geology class. No bus for that, everyone had to get there themselves. (In a movie or show there definitely would've been a bus taking everyone even though it was for a college class.) It was open-ended too, with a few different possible days to go and you make it to whichever one you can. But we went to a little trail somewhere (different location from the high school trip I mentioned) and met up at the picnic benches near the start of the trail to get the assignment for the day, which was pretty much just to look around within a short distance of the start of the trail to spot and sketch different types of rocks nearby. That was the only college class that tried to have anything like a field trip and that was the only trip the class took.
OMG I've never seen any reactor get "Rochambeau" or how to spell it correctly. Dash, you're the man.

Barbara Streisand had a house in the mountains and kept it a secret. A journalist took a picture of it and publsihed it as Streisand's house. Barely any people saw that. But Streisand sued him because she didn't want anyone to know the house. Because of the court case it became a bigger story. More journalists wrote about it way more people knew it's her house.

They were some of the most Monty Python-type of jokes in the show. I know Monty Python is a HEAVY influence on South Park, but the news reporter gags in particular could have been written by the Pythons themselves.

Way back in the day we lived in south Florida and my dad owned a baggage company that would handle all the equipment for one of the Figure Skating tours and so we got like backstage passes and the whole bit when they came to Miami, somewhere my sister has a jacket she got signed that night, it has Nancy Kerrigans signature on one side and Tonya Harding on the other side.
Matt and Trey got annoyed with Streisand when she tried to tell the people of America to not use their air conditioners to save energy when she lived in a gigantic mansion blasting hers all day😂

For context, a few things:
1 Streisand’s said everyone in Colorado sucks, (at least according to Wikipedia).
2 Parker and Stone never cared for Streisand’s singing, so her statement on Colorado was basically the last straw.
3 By getting salty about the episode, Streisand basically retroactively validated its existence. Had she played along, then at the very least, she would’ve shown some decency. Instead, she gave Parker and Stone reason to double down against her.
I tried to look up why she said that about Colorado and found this exact, word for word answer on reddit... are you the same guy, or did you just copy/paste it?

To my understanding, of all the celebrities Matt and Trey have taken to task, apparently, Barbara was the only one that was truly personal and from the heart.
Barbara Streisand also returns in the episodes called “200” and “201”. They are called that because all the 200 actors and celebrities that South Park has mocked formed a class action lawsuit against them because they make fun of Tom Cruise AGAIN. You should totally check them out Dash. Barbara was totally upgraded in them.

Just liked before I even watched the video, that's how confident I am that I'll love this video.
It's always been my favourite South Park episode, as this was the first ever episode little ten year old me saw in 1998. This it was that started my love for this iconic cartoon series.
I always thought you'd love this episode too, as it has anime inspirations towards the end.
Hearing the translations had me crying with laughter. Twenty seven years I never bothered looking up what they were actually saying, so so so glad you translated.
Still amazes me I know this episode word for word even now, and still laugh so hard at Jimbo's exlamation of "That's the biggest God damn deer I've ever seen!"
Mecha Streisand's accompanying song sounds to me like an homage to the Jet Jaguar song from the end of Godzilla vs Megalon, one of the more well-known of the older Godzilla flicks. Checks out with all the other references in the episode.

Robert Smith's bday was 2 days ago! He's 65 years old. I made an appreciation post for it because I love The Cure. The great thing about them is because they have been so prolific and timeless that whether you realize it or not, chances are you like one of their songs. So when people talk about The Cure, my friends and I are of the mind that "everybody likes The Cure" because it's true. Oh man, Ultraman was one of my favorite shows as a kid!
The funny thing is, in my language (Serbian), 'babura' is the name for a type of big, long, red paprika. In slang, people also use it to mock or insult someone with a really big and ugly nose 🌶. What a coincidence! 😄😂

I was wondering when you were going to discover this episode. I was so close to recommending it, but I guess someone beat me to it. The Japanese Godzilla theme screamed "Dash reaction" to me. 😂
It’s always great seeing the references you catch. To be honest, Godzilla kind of scared me (and still does), but specifically the original show. I’m not sure if it’s the effects or the sounds, but it’s so uncanny.
