I feel like this game is similar to what I imagine would've happened if instead of going to 3D dungeon crawling, the Persona series kept the grid based first person dungeons from Persona 1 and SMT If... and I am living for it.
I'm glad someone is bringing attention to Kowloon Highschool Chronicle. It's amazing how this game just kind of randomly came to the west, but it's a great game! I really want them to bring over the series it's spun off from. No Tokyo Majin game has come to the west.
you know what THH always praises games for having a cozy comfy sweet and chill atmosphere, and i'm sure i'm not the first one to say this but thats the kind of vibe i get from his videos. they make me so damn happy and chill inside. his voice has such a nice cadence to it too.. it's just nice!
Thanks Thor. Everytime I'm feeling down and lack the motivation to make things, all I have to do is watch one of your videos. Shit's instant, inspiration up the ass.
I really love just how chill and aesthetically pleasing your videos are. It’s not often that a UA-cam channel has such a strong eye for visual design and unique aesthetics
WOW! Amazing video as always. One of my favorite creators on the platform, and I am so glad you are still posting. The transition at roughly 8:15 was top notch. Keep up the amazing work, I love your content!
Don't know shot about this kind of games 99% but thats why i love this channel, also your humour and editing i love and just in general at least for me you do very original content, no mentioning current real life events, other popular youtubers or anything just 40 minutes where i can truly disconnect and enjoy
I never get tired of your narrative style and your intertextual analysis weaving well known games in with these more obscure titles. You are a treasure Mr. High heels.
Content like this is exactly why I subscribed. Really niche games no one else covers, covered in a chill, thorough way. Made me want to try both titles.
I could listen to you talk about games all day, I dunno how you manage to be so creative with your wording and cadence, but it's awesome, I love it, and at the same time I get to learn about obscure games I didn't know about...or did.
You are my all time favorite youtuber and I love your style, how you write, your grade A funky boy accent, and the games you talk about, and long form format
Over the past few years you've genuinely become one of the best game critics around. Who else is so in love with obscure and experimental games they'll play them in a language they don't speak? Who else finds the charm in the things most reviewers would consider flaws? Who else approaches every game like it's a work of art, and adjusts their mindset to find what the developers intended? I just don't see that anywhere else, I feel like you're way ahead of the overall community in terms of truly analyzing games as an artform and understanding the breadth of the art's horizons.
Your consistent dedication to games with an indescribable tone of comfiness and a dedication to their own vision is what persuaded me to buy this game. I am very glad you did, dude.
You are 100% right on Kowloon needing a guide haha. Loved the game but a couple puzzles really stumped me (And brute forcing the answers was not always easy) but more so than that.. I'm still not entirely sure how all the parameters for levelling up worked.
Thanks for the recommendations. Kowloon looks like a good jumping-in point for dungeon crawlers for me, a genre I'd always been turned off of due to difficulty and always being one thing. I love the appeal of the whole Lux-Pain style overworld thing this game offers, even if that emotion wheel gives me serious Oblivion flashbacks.
I gotta say I love the consistent quality of THH. Slowly grown to be my favorite youtuber. the style of all the videos you have is amazing. That is all :) always looking forward to a new video.
Kowloon has been on my radar for a little bit since it popped up on my Switch news thing around the release of the remaster in Japan and the trailer had me :O so thanks for making this video and convincing me to pull the trigger on getting it!
@@jac1011 indeed, i was randomly watching videos about Super Famicom games and was impressed by the amount of VN/adventure games that has with high quality pixel art, mot pc98 quality but quality nonetheless
The Famicom Detective Club games don't have less mystery solving gameplay elements because the genre started at that base only to be built on later by DGR,AA,HD,etc. Games preceding it like Portopia and contemporaries like the Jinguji Saburo, Todo Ryunosuke or JB Harold series' had more in depth puzzles or mystery solving elements. Some other Nintendo adventure games of the era did as well, like Time Twist. The progression of the JADV genre is not intuitively understood since the western releases were so few and out of sequence. But throughout each era there have been some games with more interactivity & problem solving and some without. Especially for the mystery titles.
i love how traditional and old school japan is that they straight up go like yeah lets release this 20 year old game in english on the switch. makes perfect sense lol
@@wolfgangamadeus232 you almost literally cannot buy something that plays games cheaper than a used switch unless you built a horrible frankenstein PC that barely works and pirate Windows. The only way they could have put this on something MORE affordable is if they just went ahead and re-pressed old PS2 discs with a translation patch applied.
@@johannamegido8465 it may be hard to believe but there’re places where you can have only one console and the price is like a full salary or a high percentage of it.
Oh! Was this game made by the same folks who did Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters? That also had that emotion wheel and the focus on flipping between social and paranormal. I found it a little hard to ‘get’ at times, which may have been the localisation but watching this makes me want to give it another whirl.
Could you type include mentioned titles in the description? As a non-english speaker sometimes I have pretty hard time to understand what I have to type in the browser.
Yo does Kowloon really mean the big-pocket-penny-men are gonna see that this aesthetic is gonna dominate the next few years? I can't fucking wait for more official translations when they realize that everyone who watches videos like this would twerk their hands to the bone just for a sliver of that V I B E
btw Thor, I can imagine how huge your backlog is but is there any chance of you playing/covering Kwaidan: Azuma Manor Story? I think it might be right up your alley
I adore this Eastern Orthodox Church with a Pope speaking in a cadence bouncing wildly back and forth between Southern Baptist Preacher and Soul Calibur Announcer.
Kowloon reminds me alot of La-Mulana if it was done as a first person rpg. Gonna have to check it out. I'd also love to see Thor cover the La-Mulana series bet he'd really enjoy those games.
immediately bought kowloon after this video. I've been playing the older smt games, and i feel like they would go right along the slow pace of those, but without the annoyances
Oh man, this certainly felt like equivalent to SMT If and Persona 1, but remastered to today's standard. Not really sure how the setting for this game would be, saw a few demons here and there, but looks like it focus more on puzzle and riddles. Given the chance if i could get this game, i would definitely buy it. I'm always a sucker for grid-style JRPG. Speaking of SMT If before, is there any chances if you could cover the story about Shin Megami Tensei game? There's a lot of unlocalized SMT games in Japan and i figured it would be great if you play it, considering the hype following SMTV that's coming soon. To end it here, keep the good works going, man. See ya Edit: I know you did cover SMT If at one point, and couple other obscure games within this series. But hey, can't hurt to do more
definitely plan on watching this later as that i took a break from kowloon for the time being due to the fact that there is no good guides. and before anyone asks about that one Japanese guide for it has been giving me problems. but from what i played of it i like it and im glad i was able to play it for that i never thought it would ever get a remaster let alone being in English.
this video might as well be old as dirt now, not to be an archaeologist about this but - apparently folks who look into minerals and geology do sometimes have to lick the rocks.
There's two versions of the DS game in English actually - the second (Memories of the Past) is the one you want as it has all the cases and extras. There was also a 3DS game, and most recently a Switch game in English as well, but we could always use more.
The amount of new old shit I have been exposed to in recent history because of THH and others has seriously put a lot of games in my "to-play" list on the back burner for these gems I never knew about... Big ups T!
wonderful excellent amazing video :3c they're old games, but the crust adds flavor of course lucky us, midnight syndrome is getting a translation patch. traditional tokimeki memorial has never gotten a translation (big sad) but the girl's side has, the 3rd version for psp being incredible.
Very thankful for no spoilers in the video. I'm definitely interested in these games but I got too big a backlog and prefer physical stuff so they're a bit low priority right now
There are no other videos like yours on this platform Thor, man they're so creative. Also, Kowloon Highschool Chronicle looks so damn good, truly seems like the puzzle adventure i am looking for. Thanks for introducing me to some niche stuff as always👌

Famicon Detective Club felt very much like curling up with an Agatha Christie mystery, but with gorgeous art (and a few places of minor frustration).
Kowloon’s 2000s artstyle makes me feel nostalgic.
