With the MGS collection coming out and finally getting to play them again after 20 years, I remember why for so long mgs 2 was my favourite ever game. And now I've realised, it still is. It was my first MGS game so I didn't care about playing as Raiden, for all I knew he was who you played as in the first game too. So I never got angry about that. I later went and played mgs 1 and loved it and mgs 3 and loved it. It's my absolute favourite series. I'm now playing MGS 5 for the first time. I know it'll be included in the 2nd volume of the collection but I had to play more MGS, and I knew it's a prequel so it won't spoil MGS 4 which I haven't played yet. I'll be getting the second collection just for MGS 4 really. And Peace Walker too, it looks like fun. But yeah mainly just MGS 4, I'll finally get to play it after all these years. Brings a tear to my eye.
That's crazy was just rewatching your mgs retrospective series it's my favorite mgs retrospective on UA-cam just finished the final video and then I see this
A whole section dedicated to VR Missions, hell yeah. When i was younger I saw someone playing Metal Gear Solid and i wanted to play it so bad, i'd later end up at a store where i picked up a copy of what i thought was MGS. It was VR Missions. After realizing that it wasn't the game i decided to keep it and continue on, like if it was practice for the real game. I ended up falling in love with it. Wish it had more ninja missions though.
It's great to see more talk about all those weird side modes. While I dug into the VR in MGS1 most I have some weirdly vivid memories of watching a friend do the Snake Tales of MGS2 on the original Xbox over the course of an afternoon after a very tense begging his girlfriend to buy it for him (we were 18 and fresh out of high school, she being the only one who held down a job). And of course any more discussion of the AC!D games always thrills me, even did a play of the first game not too long ago as both games are among my absolute favorite PSP titles.
It baffles me how this man isn’t already at 1million subs. The amount of work and how wholesome these videos are is why Thor is such a big inspiration to me. Keep it up man

Yep. Reiko Hinomoto & her heel persona, Rowdy Reiko were unlockable skins in Metal Gear Online. Fun fact: Reiko Hinomoto was partially inspired by Ridge Racer's virtual race queen Reiko Nagase.
Thanks for making this. It was really great to watch. We have similar experiences with these games and with Kojima at large. Thanks for taking the time to do a separate video on MGO, the one on MGS4 has some very treasured memories for me. And it was very sad to see it shut down. So I look forward to seeing your take on it and how it brings mgs insanity to the multiplayer arena. Keep up the good work.
The mystery missions and genola have stuck in my head for over 20 years and are what come to mind when I think of the VR missions. Shame you have to do a bunch of less interesting missions to unlock them.
I loved that MGS VR Missions expansion back in the day. There was a rumour going around that if you beat it 100%, you could use it to unlock ninja as a playable character for the main campaign. Of course that would make no sense. I did it anyway.. but I wasn't disappointed by the realisation, as those missions were awesome! Some of them were really clever and entertaining - and they sure did work as well, I was insanely good at the main game by the time I was done. I could pretty much just run through it like a ghost.
As a kid with no internet most of the time I loved this shit. Also the music choice at around 24:00 is masterful. This video just unlocked a ton of memories for me lol. Thanks for putting a big smile on my face like always dude.
20:49 no joke,it left something in me,i have a primal fear for 3d models you are not supposed to see. Also that game music is so wistful and melanchonic that it trickles in my soul.
Snake Tales has one cool moment though (well aside from the Gurlugon mission): It's when you try to locate an agent called Jennifer (a nod to MG1 i guess) ,a la Richard Ames in the game, with the directional mic and you have Snake saying "You are Jennifer right?" Like they got David Hayter to record one fucking new line for Substance lol. I always found that amusing.
I played vr missions a lot as a kid when it came out. Years later I went back and got 100% and saw the Metal Gear Ray secret and thought "wow, this would have been cool 10 years ago before MGS2 came out
I bought a disc of Metal Gear Survive for $1 on a lark and it sat on the shelf for years. When I finally popped it in, I had vastly more fun with it than I did with MGS V.

Amazing video as always 🥰 and love to see the MGSurvive gospel be spread, I hate to see that game get put down even now just because of everything that happened surrounding it
I think all of the reasons he gave were equally weighted, but a large part of why he called it metal gear "solid" had to be because it was the first 3D metal gear. There are many synonyms for something with a 3-dimensional form, but he chose "solid" because it was also part of snake's codename in that game and the previous 2. Kojima's writing has tonnes of puns and double / triple + meanings in it all the time. It was back in the 90's when 3D was still new and moving a franchise from 2D to 3D was a big freakin deal, so I don't know why this is so hard to believe. Look at all the games from that era that have "3D" in their title. Or the ones that have "HD" in the title from the PS3 Era. Kojima just wanted to show off his superior brain dick by going for a pun on 3D instead of just calling it "Metal gear 3D" Just thought I'd nitpick because I have no idea how you could come to that conclusion when the guy has a notoriously literary approach to videogame writing, and the writing and themes in games like Death Stranding are enormous, tangled complexes of interlocking, overlapping and often dual-purpose symbols, words and concepts. The title "Death Stranding" probably has at least 3 different meanings / reasons for being the title. Also I think a lot of the issues here obviously come from English not being his first language and him finding it hard to directly port his ideas over into English and then explain them in English. The translation in that part of the video makes Kojima look stupid. Either Kojima's English is bad or the translator wasn't amazing. Like the "solid" means "to the third power" part. I presume they mean "cubed" there instead of solid. And this also makes sense as to why he would mention the "cubic structure" of the graphics. Cool video btw, very much enjoyed. And sorry this comment sucks.
But he ALSO called it Solid because Solid Snake. Like, if the character's name was Iroquois Pliskin, the game would not have still been called Metal Gear Solid just because it was 3d. He might have tried to call or Escape From Metal Gear or something (the game is escaping the constraints of 2d!) , but the point is that putting the other reasons first comes off as incredibly pretentious.
@@Gatorade69 yeah but in all fairness, wasn’t he Solid Snake in MG 1 & 2? Maybe I’m remembering wrong but I think it was because of the 3d since it wasn’t the first time we met played as Solid Snake.
Tbh making puns and double meanings is more fun in the second language, at least thats my experience. Because youre not learning it in your crib and have to do it sad cringe way by reading books and talking to teachers different meanings of the same words kind of stick to you as more fascinating than your own. Like, i was obsessed with how "english" is also a term for a ball doing a spinny, and id certainly used it in some kinda fun way if homestuck didnt do it first. I dunno, i kinda believe kojumbo that he thought about all these things. Basically i agree but said with tons of words
lmao when you got to that MGS2 hallway I grabbed my phone, scrolled down in my camera roll and there it was, a photo I took of the screen of that exact same corridor from the exact same angle, as I was replaying the game a few months ago, precisely because of how cool it looks.

1:06:55 it was really funny thinking about than, something that would perfectly happen to me as a kid... fast forward three weeks, playing it for the first time, i was there, sneaking thru a mine field scared af because there is a bear i can't see stalking me while Snake shakes uncontrollably when he aims his gun...
The first person MGS2 VR Missions have an alternate control scheme that plays more like what you'd expect. Also Tomb Raider III used both analog sticks on PS1 and multiple N64 games supported dual analog by using two controllers - such as with Goldeneye's modern dual analog control scheme.

Oldhead Metal Gear Purists: "Metal Gear's an extremely serious tactical spy game for serious hardcore gamers and was never wacky or goofy til post-MGS4 Literally every Metal Gear ever since the MSX Original:
@@ToshisGarden Hey PS2 was the era when games started gradually going brown on grey, and all so gruff and serious and so on. I found the mid 2000s games to be despicable. MGS was something that both determined the trend, since visually it was muted and that's what other games were emulating, and also something that ran completely counter to it with both serious themes and also just not taking itself too way seriously. I hate many studios' obsession with "immersion" which they read as "no fun allowed".
@SianaGearz @SianaGearz I mean, you're not wrong! XD There were certainly still a lot of games that had vivid aesthetics similar to the more lively games of the 90's and games that still allowed themselves to have fun, but the signs of the forthcoming "brown future" were starting to show. I feel you pretty perfectly described MGS, and the whole "too much realism" thing is why I prefer MGS2 to MGS3 and prefer Peace Walker to The Phantom Pain, although still love all of those games in their own ways. I think other games that struck a pretty perfect balance between fun gameplay, vivid aesthetics, and serious tones are Ninja Gaiden 2004, Metroid Prime 2, and Twilight Princess. Many people often sleep on the more insteresting visual designs of those games, such as the variety of areas in Ninja Gaiden that look like they could be from different time periods as well as different games (comparing the early game that looks more like it could be from a time period similar to the first Onimusha to the futuristic Tsiron's military, or the Core of the Fiends' Underworld from the late game). Metroid Prime 2 had a lot of variety that floated between eerie, realistic environments like the Temple Grounds and Torvus Bog to colorful, otherworldly/futuristic locales like Sanctuary Fortress and basically any place on Dark Aether, lol. Twilight Princess is similar, but often leaning more fantastical. It has one of the best Castle Towns in any Zelda, and that's a very distinct location alongside other greats like the Arbiter's Grounds, Snowpeak, the Twilight Realm, the Hidden Village, and heck, even Ordon Village, lol.
I think the "Johnny" glasses are a Johnny Silverhand reference not Johnny Sasaki. Kojima also shows up as an NPC in Cyberpunk 2077 in one of the clubs.
I really wish the re-release of mgs4 in 2012 had mgs1 style vr missions and a special Game mission where you play as raiden and this was actually a demo of prototype gameplay of mgr.

32:00 using the nikita's new first person mechanics....... You could go first person with them in MGS1, it made the vulcan raven and 2nd sniperwolf fight much easier cause it also detected enemies and showed a box outline even when they were behind full cover. It was also basically required to be used for some of the VR missions due to you navigating through tunnels [though i guess you could use the soliton radar.]

Wish it had more ninja missions though.
you played the raiden way
Omg! A possible MGO series video in the future? Fingers crossed. I'm excited. MGO2 (mgs4's) is probably my favorite game. I miss it so.
Yay, you're finally back :3
An hour and a half of goodness
MGS2 has my fav side modes. The Bomb Disposal, Variety, Elimination, and Photography missions are worth trudging through the VR Weapon missions for!
Phew came in clutch almost ran out of thorhighheel videos to binge
Keep it up man
Thor doesn't play the UA-cam algorithm game.
Millions subs is for dumdums who make faces. We're nice and cozy here.
Lovely to see a video from you! Been re-watching some of your longer ones, this will fill that space quite nicely!
(also, the two ladies at ''the 2th screem'', at 34:16, are two characters from the game Rumble Roses)
EDIT:
And now I feel silly, seeing as you actually mentioned where they're from at 1:00:40 -ish...
This video should be on an episode of Ride With Norman Reedus
How I wish Document of MGS2 was standard for a lot of games
34:18 never thought I would see rumble roses in here, the only wrestle game that I bothered to learn.
Kojima reminds me of a Christian apologist. He puts a lot of meaning into words and definitions to obscure really simple choices and concepts.
Another great Thor viddy. Was especially happy to see Mesal Gear Solid get some love, since Ape Escape 3 was probably my favorite game as a kid.
the document of mgs2 is one of the coolest fucking things in gaming ever (even more considering it's about one of the best games ever)
20:49 no joke,it left something in me,i have a primal fear for 3d models you are not supposed to see. Also that game music is so wistful and melanchonic that it trickles in my soul.
Snake Tales has one cool moment though (well aside from the Gurlugon mission):
It's when you try to locate an agent called Jennifer (a nod to MG1 i guess) ,a la Richard Ames in the game, with the directional mic and you have Snake saying "You are Jennifer right?"
Like they got David Hayter to record one fucking new line for Substance lol. I always found that amusing.
Metal Gear Solid: The Forgotten Cheesy Sequel
Hey, that's the game that came included with my copy zone of the enders!
Wow that long one came outta nowhere...
Thanks for that, so good too see a lot of the quirky, weird and forgotten stuff of MGS. And Willem.
Really interesting video, this makes me actually want to track down MGS1 VR missions and MGS2 Subsistence
I played vr missions a lot as a kid when it came out. Years later I went back and got 100% and saw the Metal Gear Ray secret and thought "wow, this would have been cool 10 years ago before MGS2 came out
30:15 that looks dam near real right now
literally liminal space
God the bit about Iwata explaining the switch like Kojima had me in fucking stitches I needed that laugh today
That was an incredibly comfy watch. Im pleasantly surprised you found more to talk about regarding MGS
7:59 Such powerful and striking imagery.
Kojima-san has done it once again!
I bought a disc of Metal Gear Survive for $1 on a lark and it sat on the shelf for years. When I finally popped it in, I had vastly more fun with it than I did with MGS V.
I found your channel with the MGS videos initially and it's always good to see a new one. Evidently it was about a year ago I binged just about everything on the channel and forgot to subscribe. Glad this showed up in my feed, so I could remember to this time. Keep up the good work.
Woah, you actually taught me something new about MGS...had no idea that spoof existed in Ape Escape as well. Love this stupid series, can't wait for the online video. That was my shit back in the day.
Who knows when we’ll get it, but Very hyped for an MGO video.
I’ve always wanted to play ur on MGS4, but could never get my stuff to work.
Great vid. Looking forward to the next one.
The Vectrussy… Mark from Classic Game Room would appreciate
remembering your videos makes me feel like im trying to remember a weird dream
Kojima just wanted to show off his superior brain dick by going for a pun on 3D instead of just calling it "Metal gear 3D"
Just thought I'd nitpick because I have no idea how you could come to that conclusion when the guy has a notoriously literary approach to videogame writing, and the writing and themes in games like Death Stranding are enormous, tangled complexes of interlocking, overlapping and often dual-purpose symbols, words and concepts.
@@GalanthosDid you read what he said ? He clearly states it was also "Solid" because of Snake's codename. Second fucking sentence.
@@Gatorade69 yeah but in all fairness, wasn’t he Solid Snake in MG 1 & 2? Maybe I’m remembering wrong but I think it was because of the 3d since it wasn’t the first time we met played as Solid Snake.
lmaooo@@Gatorade69
Tbh making puns and double meanings is more fun in the second language, at least thats my experience. Because youre not learning it in your crib and have to do it sad cringe way by reading books and talking to teachers different meanings of the same words kind of stick to you as more fascinating than your own. Like, i was obsessed with how "english" is also a term for a ball doing a spinny, and id certainly used it in some kinda fun way if homestuck didnt do it first. I dunno, i kinda believe kojumbo that he thought about all these things. Basically i agree but said with tons of words
I love oh poor Johnny, oh poor pooping Johnny's tale!
I've beaten MGS2 VR, but I had no idea that MGS1 VR was even more weird
0:46
"You can't trick me! Battlezone looked WAY worse than that!" (the fact I knew that name off the top of my head frightens me)
27:35 That Killer7 reference was smooth af
I was just playing lunacid with this vid in the background and got your name popping up on screen, it was surreal
lmao when you got to that MGS2 hallway I grabbed my phone, scrolled down in my camera roll and there it was, a photo I took of the screen of that exact same corridor from the exact same angle, as I was replaying the game a few months ago, precisely because of how cool it looks.
my dude. i've been watching your Metal Gear Retrospective playlist on almost nonstop repeat since i discovered it about a year ago, and i gotta say you get better and better at these things every video. there was just SO MUCH SHIT jam packed into this one, it felt like i was sitting here for about a week lmao. good stuff
Also Tomb Raider III used both analog sticks on PS1 and multiple N64 games supported dual analog by using two controllers - such as with Goldeneye's modern dual analog control scheme.
i love this channel so much. this video is like everything i love about this channel
I can’t believe ive put off vr missions for so long i was mouth wide open absolutely floored these damn japanese and their amazing passion for the art its beautiful
Because it's Kojima
Oldhead Metal Gear Purists: "Metal Gear's an extremely serious tactical spy game for serious hardcore gamers and was never wacky or goofy til post-MGS4
Literally every Metal Gear ever since the MSX Original:
@@ToshisGardenI'm just gonna say one thing: oh poor pooping Johnny!
@@thelegendofner0 Yes, truly!! XD
Thank God - I needed this
Can’t wait for you to make a video about MGS delta whenever it comes out
I think the "Johnny" glasses are a Johnny Silverhand reference not Johnny Sasaki. Kojima also shows up as an NPC in Cyberpunk 2077 in one of the clubs.
when you said there were 3 disks in the MGS3+subsistance, I checked mine, and realized I'm american :c only 2
That’s definitely music from Snatcher in the mystery level with the office
very wonderful vid, love to learn more about the metal gear series and the various extras it has
jus what I needed
I think there was an option that lets you play whole Acid2 game stereoscopic along with Solid Eye Tobidacid thing
I love the cut from MGS to FF7.
this video certainly was one of them of all time
I really wish the re-release of mgs4 in 2012 had mgs1 style vr missions and a special Game mission where you play as raiden and this was actually a demo of prototype gameplay of mgr.
Love you Thor and your videos, keep up the amazing work brother, it's always a pleasure to see you upload.
ThorHighHeels X Metal Gear
Best kinds of videos
I haven't watched all of this yet, but the back half of 2023 has had some of the thorsiest thorhighheels uploads to date 🔥This, the back to back Tekken vids following back to back FF videos, chase the express; it's very clear you've made good on last year's promise to yourself to get back to your own personal good good, and not chase the new release/high view rat race. AND with a Coconuts release to boot, good shit 👏Good luck in 2024 if we don't see anything else this year
How I haven't found your channel till now is befuddling. Love this video!!!
1:19:01 as a german, that was a top notch impression and pronounciation
19:40 Love Dennis' Thunderdome shirt lmao
the electrocuted snake yell at 4:44 lol, subtle sample
aw yeah! new thorhighheels video! time to make everything it talks about my personality for the next 3 months!
Excited about the books Thor!
My favorite UA-camr making a video about my favorite video game? Am I in a VR mission right now?
Start of MGS2 section: 18:43
Actually talking about the MGS2 side missions: 31:30
holy shit this video has so much padding lol, i guess it was worth it talking about rectums and the same MGS2 points literally everyone already talked about for ten minutes?
he stretches out every sentence for like 30 seconds, like at 32:12 omg
Everytime i see that u post it makes ma day
When i was a little kid i used to watch my uncle play metal gear solid and ask to play. He wouldnt let me play the 'real' game but sometimes would put on vr missions and let me play that. I didn't play the 'real' game until years later.
