My first "band" was actually just a 6FU cover band playing songs from their first album because the material was simple enough for everyone to learn in a short period of time. That album still has a place in my heart.
I wish I could hear this because I'm sure your vocalist was a lot better than Chris. Sounds like you guys were just playing Six Feet Under without the suck
Replacing Chris Barnes with Corpsegrinder was the best thing Cannibal Corpse ever did for themselves. Barnes' voice started to die off right around the Bleeding, and CC were getting better musically with each passing album. Barnes was the only person in that band who wasn't interested in growing his skills. He was happy just writing about stabbing queefs or whateverthefuck and blazing in his hotel room. And at the same time, the rest of the band matured and focused on being the best they could be. He may be a Warcraft-obsessed manchild, but he’s still 100% committed to his craft and takes care of his voice very well. And look at where the two bands are now. CC are still making solid albums in their 50s, whereas SFU and Chris Barnes are walking memes. Cannibal Corpse saved their careers with that move.

6-7 years ago when I was still on Facebook and followed their official page, they announced an European tour. It was mostly circling around Germany, Belgium and the surrounding countries. I was six beers deep, an asshole and commented, that doing gigs in four countries doesn't count as a tour of Europe, when you leave out close to ten other countries. A few hours later I got a private message from their page. Someone was asking, if I could organize gigs for them. I've never booked gigs, even with my own band and nothing on my page suggested, that I knew anything about booking a tour. At that time I was working in a warehouse. Took it as a sarcastic joke. But it wasn't, they were serious.

If they have somebody commenting on how they are missing countries, well, maybe that person knows somebody who can book a venue? Maybe a strange move, but worth a try, at least.
I love the early Steve Swanson era of Six Feet Under. That dude came up with some crushing riffs that were so simple, and his tone was quite unique at the time too.
I feel like Ola secretly distanced himself from Six Feet Under quite a while ago when he listed bands he was in and he said something like "Yeah that's all" without mentioning SFU
Me and a few fans were lucky enough to meet Paul Mezurkiewitz after a cannibal corpse show not to long ago, i’ll never forget when Paul let out a genuine laugh when a fan asked him what he thought of the new 6FU album lol

I'll always like SFU for the same reason I like Jungle Rot. It's knuckle-draggy shit that knows what it is and is fun. Unborn/Undead is a great pair of albums.
I was listening to DM when SFU was formed, and it was a breath of fresh air in a daily expanding world of Suffocation and Incantation clones. CC and Obituary were doing well, and I remember reading Barnes and West wanted a side project to write simpler, catchier, groovier DM, Haunted was brilliant and immediately as Allen left, it was obvious who the creative force was.
I'm disappointed nobody is talking about that hilarious "Barnes Isn't Noble" joke at 7:31. That almost made me spit out my coffee, keep up the great work!
@@pixelbasedlifeformsBarnes and Noble is a bookstore chain in the US and maybe some other countries. Kaylen replaced the "and" with the word "isn't" because Chris Barnes isn't noble.
True Carnage and Bringer Of Blood may aged badly, but they were pretty important at the time. They were heavily influenced by Nu Metal and Six Feet Under became an important gateway band to extreme metal. You saw young kids running around in their merch, who probably never heard about Cannibal Corpse and didnt give a shit about the "classic" DM sound on albums like Haunted. They were there for the stoner guy with dreadlocks doing rap growls over groovy and bouncy riffs. Heck there were straight up guest features by rappers. Thats what started the journey into DM for many people and deserves some credit.
You're exactly right here. I loved Six Feet Under, and when metal music went into the Nu era, SFU seemingly followed suit. Old heads like me hated it, but it honestly catapulted them out of the obscure and onto some huge metalfests. For that next generation of kids, SFU just was Death Metal. They didn't know the better stuff yet and the internet was just getting going. I cringed at him repeating Bringer of Blood over and over to that lame riff, but it was exactly like you stated, a gateway to extreme music.
Exactly my story:) SFU and Chris' lyrics dramatically expanded my mind and knowledge about extreme music as a 16-yo bong smoker in 2003, and I will always be grateful for those memories. The only real problem is - they should have quit the band when Steve Swanson left, and I still don't get it why Chris didn't just start a new band with Jack Owen instead of using the same old brand that once stood for something. Fans of fast music might find True Carnage boring - to me this is a stoned masterpiece.
@@KJKanon You guys are right. I was a huge fan of SFU back then, and loved them for the grooves. Might not of heard of much of the other death metal, or did and didn't care for it. I still pull up the live video here on youtube of Bringer of Blood in Germany. Love that song. ua-cam.com/video/nfqFydpp2Hg/v-deo.html
I'd argue that Undead was slightly better in terms of writing and song direction. Rob Arnold breathed some new life in that band and while I love Ola with all my heart, Rob was the better fit for that band in that era, but only by a slight margin and doesn't get the credit he deserves for it.
You might not remember, but there was a period where you could buy a set refrigerator magnets that had words printed on them, so you could make your own poetry or whatever. I found them helpful for writing. Anyways, there were various sets of them, and I really think there should have been a Cannibal Corpse set. When when Barnes makes that 'EEEEEEEEEEEEEEe" sound. Reminds me of Wes Scantlins version of 'About A Girl."
I love SFU. Don't really care about the personalities of the members of a certain band as long as I like the music. Death rituals is amazing, I think you should give it another go. Great video. Earned a sub :)
As someone who writes and records their own music and has very high standards for production value, idk how a record label, band manager, or even the bandmates themselves would let some of these albums get released to the public. Its a legit health crisis.
The gall that that man has to insult Trevor and Corpsegrinder is unbelievable. My grunts after taco night diarrhea are more brutal then his 2020 album…squeaks?
My neighbors and I love Six Feet!!! They have been excellent on some and goofy on others. I agree they released some subpar shit, but they are tons of fun and total party material

I remember he also assaulted Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. I believe he posted something on Twitter along the lines of "not being a veggie burger eating pussy" and when Travis went to his tour bus to confront him, Chris sucker punched him. Cattle dropped from the tour, but played the same venues a day later for free with a few local bands, so fans didn't miss out. I got to hang out with Travis and he mentioned how sad it was to have someone he grew up listening to act like that. Cattle definitely showed what it was to be a masterclass.

Glad for all your opinion? But for me 6 ft is on top of the list of one of the most badass death metal bands out there. I like six feet under their sound is awesome and I will always be a six feet under fan I like Chris Barnes and I like the sound that his band makes
So in 1994 a 15 year old me was bored with 25 bucks and went to the only used books and record shop in town (at the time) and walked out of the store with: Autopsy's "Mental Funeral", Cynic's "Focus", Sinister's "Cross the Styx", Pestilence's "Testimony of the Ancients", Mortician's "Mortal Massacre", Six Feet Under's "Haunted" and Slayer's "Divine Intervention." I enjoyed it for about a week then stopped listening to it all together. The Slayer album lasted about as long as SFU, they both ended up back at that same pawn shop. The rest of those albums I still listen to fairly regularly.
I did not listen to this all the way through, yet. What I did want to say that while most of my friends in the death metal scene in the early/mid/ late nineties loved Cannibal Corpse and Chris Barnes, when six feet under came out and corpse grinder was doing his thing with Cannibal Corpse, we kind of dogged his shit because we were loyal to Chris Barnes and Hammer Smashed Face, and everything else kick ass that he did. I still remember the comparisons that "Corpsegrinder ain't no Chris". That much is true. But they are both unique singers and bring something different to the plate. As I've gotten older in the last twenty years I have come to both appreciate and respect corpsegrinder for what he did with Cannibal Corpse. I loved the absolute crap out of Vile, hit after hit, including Bloodlands. I also still love chris barnes and early six feet under as well. Innate biases of the past aside, I love them both.
I really liked Corpsegrinder with Monstrosity. Imperial doom is one of my favorite dm albums. That said I felt the same way when he moved over, but have really came to like a lot of his material later on. Gore Obsessed is one that comes to mind. I guess this is kind of a comment for another post, though.

I’m not gonna lie, I enjoyed listening to Death Rituals, I blew the hell out of my car speakers when I was in high school from listening to Seed of Filth and Ten Deadly Plagues, which were my two favorite songs from that album. Other than that I agree with everything else you pointed out in this video. Great video though, keep up the good work.
Got a personal story about him My dad who is a big fella 6'3 200 pounds was doing security for I think a six feet under show was doing usually stuff guards would do and Chris didn't seem to like it and told him to let them on stage and my father said no and they almost got into a fist fight.
Chris Barnes and fist fights seems to be a running theme. A friend of mine's ex was a frontman for a death metal band back in the 90s and he considered it a point of pride that he managed to get into a fist fight with Barnes at a gig haha.

Rob Arnold deserves so much more credit for what he did writing Undead. Unborn was great and Ola did a fantastic job with it, but Rob is an unsung hero in terms of what he did to revitalize SFU. I feel like Ola gets more praise because he's more popular.
I remember when Ola announced he got the gig. I messaged him with my congratulations and let him know it was recognition for his hard work and a great opportunity to move forward in his music career. But I ended by pointing out the obvious, that SFU are beneath him pretty much across the board. I was thrilled when he moved on from them.
I was really into this until about halfway through. You said something about youths and after that all I could think about was Joe Pesci in my cousin Vinny when he's talking to the judge. "two youts." I love that movie and that scene, so I'm going to have to come back to this. 😅
"It's death metal, you can never understand what the vocalist is saying anyways." Never in my life have I been offended by something that I 100% agreed with!

The cover albums of course are hilarious (their cover of maiden’s The Evil That Men Do especially) but honestly I think bringer of blood might be their funniest record. I wholeheartedly recommend it on that basis alone
Barnes's guttural vocals on True Carnage sounded liked because he said that he tried bringing back his style he had on Butchered at Birth and Tomb Of The Mutilated.

I grew up with the old school Cannibal Corpse and though I liked them, the breakdown always lost me because they would have a killer riff and then lose it. I found six feet under accidentally at the mall. I took a chance on it because I saw that Chris Barnes and Geezer Butler on the Same album. Instant fan.. and my friends too
Bringer of Blood came out when I got into death metal and at the time I loved it but very soon after, I discovered Bands like Exhumed, Nile, Mortician, CC and so on. I bought "13" when it came out and it was soooooo bad, that I have not listen to the Band for years. Now I once in a while listen to some older stuff and even covered one song here on UA-cam. I think there was also a "beef" between barnes and Thy Art is Murder, because they also had a song named "Human Target". Barnes probably is not the kind of guy I would want to hang out a lot, also cause he seems to be some kind of Conspiracy Theory guy. Very nice video! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

@@brianperry2599 ok! That is cool! I just can judge from the stuff from the internet. Have seen them live 2 times but never had the chance talking to anyone. His influence from CC alone makes him "untouchable" in a way.
Regarding the music: I have to agree with most of your comments on all of the albums except the comments on Crypt of The Devil. For me this is a really really good album, and actually I find a reason for it to be: the songwriting credits go to the Hall brothers of Cannabis Corpse. I find it way more interesting than the one in which Ola Englund was involved, but I guess all the hype and reputation about him made everyone to think his SFU was a 'better' album (despite being credited in the composition of only 2 songs). Crypt of the Devil has a lot of great riffs, great drumming and sounds good (production-wise). Regarding Nightmares of the Decomposed, the only part which makes me feel bad somehow is that the songwriting credits are for Jack Owen, which for me it's one of the best guitarists in the whole death metal genre. Regarding Chris Barnes: one of the only complaints I have with the death metal fans / community is the fact that they should be more respectful with the 'iconic' part of Chirs Barnes. Of course the guy is special and probably belongs to another 'era' if you want to look at it like that, but let's be honest: he really had to cut through a lot of disadvantages and obstacles during his early Cannibal Corpse years. I mean, people tend to think that nowadays you can sing whatever you want and play your 'brutal' music because you have all the digital tools and all of that, but come on, CC was already playing Moscow in 1993! They had to go through a lot of barriers and censorship throughout the years and battle with prejudice and limitations. What we should understand, I guess, is that mostly no one, except the grumpy/cringy personality of Chris Barnes, could have been able to do the task of bringing bands like CC to the surface. If it wasn't because of his personality or eccentricity, most of Death Metal and subgenres wouldn't exist nowadays in the same way. Just let the old man keep growing old and stupid, who the f*ck cares anyway. If you don't like his music or shows, just stay away. Cheers!
You do realize that Brandon Ellis of Black Dahlia Murder fame was on that album too, right? It had a lot of very creative people working on it which is why many people regard it as a high point in SFU rather steady career of decent albeit lackluster music. Chris goes through phases where the guy either has his shit together or he doesn't. When he got together these great minds to play on Crypt of the Devil, he had his shit together. Is it the best album ever? No. Is it the best SFU abulm? No. But what it did do was give two up and coming guitarists a spring board to jump from.
@@Charles_Anthony Hey man. Didn't know about Brandon's contribution but he's such an outstanding player that his input definitely improved the other guy's work even more. And I agree with you with the CB phases.
I am not a fan of death metal whatsoever! But I saw these guys in Cincinnati, and they were so very good! I remember really getting into their performance, and the singer kinda noticed me I guess, because he gives me a thumbs up, I turned around and everyone else was just standing there with their arms crossed, watching. I thought they were very good and very entertaining.
Listen to em on occasion but they've never really hooked me. I do, however, really like the covers albums they've done. Really great way to discover new bands.
It’s hard to believe that the same guy who wrote the lyrics to Nightmares of the Decomposed also wrote the lyrics to the Bleeding…. Those albums are in different universes
Something must have happened with his mind, probably too much bad weed, and I don't even mean this as a diss or making fun of him - a friend of mine got his whole personality changed after what he called his "awakening", but people around him with some medical knowledge would describe as a drug induced psychosis. That's why we need to legalize stuff, so it isn't poisoned with lead and shit...
@@Knokkelman you don't get psychosis from "bad" weed - for some people with predispositions consuming it on a regular basis is just generally bad for them. Has nothing to do with lead and chemicals.

Its really shocking how no one mentions Steve Swanson's contributions to the band. His guitar work is brilliant. Its only after he left the band went to shit. Some of those songs you think are simple are far from it, especially on Bringer of Blood.
I was there for the Seth Putnam incident, yeah it sorta sent down like that with Chris retreating to his bus and refusing to come out. Barnes's era of CC changed everything and The Haunted was great, but it sorta ends there for me. I always end up jumping ship when I feel like it's finally set sail.
I saw Chris Barnes at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Meh, I'll give you that
You're exactly right here.
@@KJKanon I am not even familiar with that track and don't think I want to be! After Maximum Violence I was done, and never liked Warpath.
Unborn is a sick album,Ola was a breath of fresh air,it's a shame they didn't do more with him.

No.
But what it did do was give two up and coming guitarists a spring board to jump from.

six feet under is one of the bands who got me into death metal along side with cannibal corpse, morbid angel, death, Deicide and so many more
and they always will have speacial place in my heart
He's still a legend, he might act goofy sometimes...but he wrote and helped make some of the greatest death metal albums of all time.
The guy is a complete arsehole. There comes a point when it doesn't matter how good your music is if you're a terrible person
@@rorz999 I disagree.
@@rorz999 watch interviews. You know how the internet feels for people that grew up in the 80s that were respected by hundreds of people in real life face to face
? zombie apocalypse.. and the only ones enjoying it are the people that believe they havent had enough say.(the bitter kid)
I will always listen to and wear six feet under shirts when I was in school I was surrounded by scene and emo kids who all wore tight yellow pants and pink jackets, and both guys and girls had the same hair styles and make up. SFU also helped keep me in the mind frame of never letting anyone bully me. Not gonna pretend the last couple are anything great but everyone can admit at one point Chris was the deadliest voice and SFU was the deadliest sound in metal. At the end of the day though I could care less what you listen too as long as metal lives. Even if I think every band you listen too sucks doesn’t mean we can’t be friends
Its really shocking how no one mentions Steve Swanson's contributions to the band. His guitar work is brilliant. Its only after he left the band went to shit. Some of those songs you think are simple are far from it, especially on Bringer of Blood.
All of the terrible albums prior to Steve leaving were ones he played on. Everything from true carnage to death rituals was shit.
@@MarcusBlueWolf Death Rituals sucked? Are you fucking kidding me?
Steve's a bllllooooody legend
I like them
Me too
And that’s completely fine
Good for you
I was there for the Seth Putnam incident, yeah it sorta sent down like that with Chris retreating to his bus and refusing to come out. Barnes's era of CC changed everything and The Haunted was great, but it sorta ends there for me. I always end up jumping ship when I feel like it's finally set sail.
Back in 1999 when I played for the band Dead Centre, we covered Lycanthropy and Human Target. Loved Six Feet Under.
I am a Huge Six Feet Under's Fan ❤️.
I saw Chris Barnes at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face.
Some people enjoy getting really high and being dicks in public. It just proves that before Chris was metal, he was punk.
@@brianmorris364 it’s a Reddit copypasta origionally (supposedly) about the musician flying lotus
@@skinnyraptor9111 so this never happened lol I didn't think that sounded like Chris. He's fairly respectful and well mannered in public normally. Never heard of flying lotus. Lol
@@brianmorris364 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Lotus
Idk how much electronica/beats you listen to but he’s great. I listen to a lot of metal but this shit just gets me
@@skinnyraptor9111 I'd check it out, thanks.
A couple of years ago I saw Six Feet Under attempt to cover Hammer Smashed Face. It was absolutely ATROCIOUS.
More than half of this video is just slander. Haunted, Maximum Violence, 13, Undead, Unborn, Crypt of the devil are all good albums. Commandment, Death Rituals and Torment are even decent. I’d say the only sort of weak links I’d say are Warpath, True Carnage, and Nightmares. People just don’t like Chris, but like it or not he’s a godamn Pioneer and one of the most true and authentic death metal vocalists.
I found Bringer of Blood at a flea market for 3 bucks. I proudly laugh at it on my cd shelf when I see that "artwork."
🤣🤣🤣🤣
You overpaid
I always liked the album 13. Shadow of the Reaper and somewhere in the darkness are hot 🔥
