As an ethnically mixed metal head, the songs speaks to me. Growing up I had an immediate attention to metal music and as I got older and learned more about my African American heritage, I fell in love with Negro Spiritual. This bands sound is somehow the thing my ears have been begging for since the first time I heard SOAD.
A A black metal? Black metal is like Goth dark death metal stuff, or maybe Danzig. Unless they mean black person who sings metal? Which would need to be called something different then
Listen to the album. It is. It's a mix between Black metal, Blues and other sub-genres. And the musician himself said that : noisey.vice.com/en_us/article/zeal-and-ardor-interview
There is so much soul in the vocals, the authentic early blues sound(plus the call and response), something that I personally haven't found yet in metal.
Talk about an underrated band. I checked them out because of the Apple Music description: "Metal, African Spirituals, and Electronica thrillingly collide".
Saw them at Bloodstock yesterday, really enjoyed them, they probably recieved the loudest applause I'd ever experienced at Bloodstock for a Sophie stage band
I saw their live in Devilstone Festival, Lithuania. Guys, you should see them live! It was something, that I really don't have words to describe how good and brilliant they are. Unique, soulful, magical.. Every second of the concert was taking a breath away. It's one of the most incredible and unique music & band I have ever seen and hear.
this is, genuinely, no exaggeration, the most beautiful song ive ever heard. the juxtaposition of southern gospel and black metal lyrics mades my heart so happy.
Saw these fellas 12/13 and it was far beyond my greatest expectations. Production was clear and not too loud. Manuel was hilarious. So good. Don't miss it!
The devil in the song has nothing to do with God or Christianity. I guess you didn't understand who is the devil in the song. Listen to the sound of chains in the song. Maybe then you can understand what they meant by the devil.
I heard this on a British radio station about 3 months ago and thought it was so fresh and expressive compared to the monotony of modern pop and even rock music. I didn't catch who it was until about one month ago and found that zeal and ardor stem from birdmask and Manuel Gagneaux. Great blending of genres and experimentation from artists like this keep music alive in my view.
Saw them Monday opening for Meshuggah in Brussels... No coincidence these two bands tour together. Two bands with an incomparable sound... Just listened to their last full this evening... Great!

I hope they put this in Lucifer s5 soundtrack, more people need to hear this band!
Thanks to MayansMc for always having the best music… I haven’t found any good blues or music this damn good in years hell since 2015 when I lived in the Dirty South down in Baton Rouge Louisiana …. The music from that area. The whole south shit this song just has that whole vibe, I could just feel the vibe, listening to this while driving through Mississippi or Nashville.. this song is damn good
I'm sitting here right now working on Broken Saints: Miami Charter, a Sons of Anarchy/Mayans literary spinoff. And I gotta say: this song inspires me to keep writing. 👍
Absolutely stunning stuff. Buying the whole discography and looking forward to the future from this amazing band. Secretly wondering what Varg would say, though.
This song is phenomenal. This song to me, as I say this in a nice way, comes off like an old slave song, one that they’d sing with words instead of instruments. This song is one of the most strongest songs I’ve ever heard as Z&A fully understands that words are as strong as actions, like blood used as ink to describe pain, as the devil is easily manipulative, as Mother Nature as it’s put is his playground.
Only the Devil is NOT fine. The reason this song is so beautifully orchestrated, so perfectly played, so pleasing to your senses, well, you guessed it, it’s from the lake of fire, otherwise known as hell. Keep your souls guarded - Jesus is returning and the Devil deceives us ALL. Amen, God Bless
I am not a black metal fan but I heard Mille from Kreator mention this band on the Jasta podcast and wow what a recommendation! Literally the word art is the only way I could describe this. Thumbs up!
I really like this sound it gives the old feel of how the old blues singers/ how slaves would sing songs back in the day of slavery. I would totally buy this album =0)
I know I’m seven years late but the whole band was founded by some black guy who was interested some 4chan racist’s question which was “what if the slaves (he said the n-word before slaves) adopted Satanism” and the black guy said “Yeah? What if?” And he got to work.
Only first heard this band today, in the couple hours I’ve been listening to them, I ordered Devil is Fine and Stranger Fruits on vinyl, and ordered 2 shirts. I’ve never done that before. I love this band

Afro-American Blues inspired metal band… idk who thought we needed this, but they were right.
That's a funny thing: A 4chan troll came up with it as a way to troll Manuel Gagneux, who took the Idea and made this great concept band.
this is so good
@Hidrobyte Never thought I'd feel grateful to a shitty 4chan troll. Truly the Devil works in mysterious ways. 😂
Str8 slave chain gang music. To keep workin. Spoke in code. In this case we talkin bout slave masters and over seers.
