    As a short rider, it is sometimes inevitable to put the right foot down when coming to a stop, when the ground is sloping towards the left, and so the left foot can't reach the ground. That means practicing front brake only stops 😬 scary but unavoidable for shorties on tall bikes.

  • @jasonking4209
    @jasonking4209 2 роки тому +6

    That is almost exactly how I stop already, I go to first gear using but I let off the clutch in between gears for some added engine braking while simultaneously slowing with my front brake and switching to my rear brake just before making my stop so that my brake light stays on while I at the light. That sounded more complicated than it is.

    This is one of my favorite exercises I learned from this channel. Honestly. It was mentioned before- finishing the last few feet of breaking at a stop with only rear brake. Wow! First time, off the front brake there was a huge lurch before I got the rear brake fully pressed. I learned my rear-brake intuition was waaay off. Today, when I think to do it at a stop, it’s a great reality check.

    Hey Greg, love your vids and learned a thing or two following your drills. Also our intructuctor from the driving school also made us very comfortable making emergency brakes as long as you squeeze the brakes. Anyway, now that fall is coming and the roads get wetter, colder and generally nastier, maybe it's a good time to make a series on braking and safe riding in wet weather conditions?

    Passed my M class ride test last week. I purchased his book on Amazon. But this exercise was most important for me. I am a shorty with 29" inseam riding a Suzuki DR650. I barely tippy-toe on a stop/light. The tester wants to see the left leg on the ground and the right leg on the rear brake. Dragging both feet on the stop/light would have failed the test. This technique helped. Now I can confidently ride and stop in downtown traffic like a pro:)

    Or another example would be if I was in 4th or 5th gear cruising along the highway, and a car pulls out in front of me; it’s okay to pull my clutch in and jam all the way back down to first in a single clutch pull? (As well as braking to a 1st gear speed of course.)

    Something along the lines of this that I find very satisfying to do, is to come to a complete stop while turning- say at a dogleg stop sign. Like at the end of my street here, it intersects with a road that is maybe at a 30 degree angle. So when I come to a stop there intending to go left, I have to bring the bike to a stop turning to the left before I can pull out. Hope that makes sense 😋 It makes it slightly easier for me that my street is also sloping slightly downhill for whatever reason as well 👍

    I’m coming to a stop in a different way, but maybe wrong. When I come to a stop in traffic, I slow down to a safe speed to approach a car in front of me that’s already stopped and then I will actually come to a point where I put the bike in the friction zone while I’m using the rear brake to come to a complete stop. In your opinion, is that acceptable or is it completely wrong or is there a reason I should not do this but instead pull in on the clutch and just use the rear brake to stop? i’ve just always felt more comfortable having power to the rear wheel when I’m coming to a stop just in case I need it to quickly move out of the way for some reason. Thanks Greg!

    And then just as you are about to stop you hit a bump, the bike leans to the right , you aren’t prepared and it drops.
    Interesting how different countries have varying approaches .
    Uk advanced riders learn ability to select foot down according to road conditions , a right foot down means final stop with light front brake .
    Question- how would you force the bike to lean the way of a foot down at stop? Shift weight? How?

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  2 місяці тому

      Counter steering makes the bike lean one way or the other, if I'm coming to stop and want to put my right foot down, the last foot of the stop, I'll push forward on the right handlebar to make it lean right...and maybe scoot my butt off to the right so I have more reach if I'm on a tall bike

    I just completely lost my loved and perfect set up (for me) 2018 1200GSA from Hurricane Ian’s storm surge last night. It was under 7 feet of saltwater in a place that’s never on record (forty years plus) ever flooded. Super bummer right now. 🫤

      Clymer Book's the best money you can spend on your bike, and a competent mechanic can get the tear-down and clean out done relatively pain-free. JUST DO NOT try to start the bike before you've cleaned her out completely and replaced fluids, filters, and gaskets... Most of the parts washing can be done with ordinary mineral spirits (yes, pain thinner) or even Kerosene or Diesel (which ever is cheaper for you)... It's a lot of labor, but beats the hell out of scrapping "Baby" (in my opinion). Good luck, whether you tackle the rebuild or take on the insurance company!! ;o)

      @@gnarthdarkanen7464 Yeah, it’s a huge bummer and I’m a firefighter, so I’m not going to be able to do anything for it for another 48 hours while I’m on duty… beside the fact there isn’t any fresh water available for rinsing for at least another couple days (water pump stations had major damage).
      If it isn’t toast now, it will be in another 48 hours with saltwater in it. Luckily I have insurance but not nearly to the amount I have in it, besides all the upgrades I put into it. (Full Akro titanium system, full Clearwater setup, Sargent Seats, BMW performance rear sets, blah, blah blah….
      But at least I’ll get some $ for it. 🤷‍♂️

      @@SpecterSeventy2 I don't know. 48 hours shouldn't create a total loss... Some of the most exposed and sensitive stuff, maybe, and obviously electronics are an issue, but I've salvaged quite a lot from a standing flood damaged machine, bike or otherwise...
      Most engines are aluminum blocks, which corrode a bit, but only just. Once there's a crusty white layer of oxide, it actually protects metal underneath without a lot of hell to pay (for instance)...
      In any case, it's ultimately YOUR call whether it's worth it to continue investment or where to cut losses... AND yeah, kinda sucks to be stuck behind the 8-ball before you even get a chance to really inspect anything. Hope you get a decent settlement out of the ordeal, just so it's not a total loss...
      I'm just high enough in the mountains, here, that my insurance laughed when I asked about flood coverage. The agent simply shook his head, "Man, I'm telling you now, if YOU ever file on a flood claim, there won't even be a company left to file with!"
      SO... that was that... Even though there was an entire neighborhood WASHED AWAY about 5 miles from my house about a decade ago. Turns out my agent wasn't wrong, though. None of those people (who survived) had any recourse. ;o)
