I love how jerry describes the difference between playing live and making a record, "its like the difference between trying to build a ship in a bottle and being in a rowboat out on the ocean." Clever.
The story of how Bob met Jerry is so classic. New Year's Eve '63 I believe (maybe '64). Bob walking the back alley's and heard some music, popped into the store, saw Garcia waiting for his students to show up. Bob told him it was New Year's Eve and they probably weren't coming. They got some instruments out and started playing, the rest is history. Bob didn't know where he was that night, Jerry didn't know what day it was that night, yet their path's managed to cross and they played together for the next 30+ yrs.
oh my god, I've ben trying to explain the dead to my generation (those who dont get it) about how its what they called Electric Chamber music, much like orchestral concerts with suites and verses and time changes, completely live and impromtu. When I was real young the only music I liked was classic, fast forward and the GD is like an incredibly intense orchestra.. and gave me a place to call my (OUR) own.
