The world is such a better place because Jerry Garcia lived. That being said, there's not a day that goes by that I don't wish he was still with us... Have a Jerry Christmas people.
Jerry was a very kind person. At my first show I was among the first people in and I looked over at the stage and Jerry was sitting on the stage with his feet hanging over the edge and playing his unplugged guitar. I just walked over and because the stage was low to begin with I we were eye to eye. Asked him if I could sit behind the amps the whole time he just smiled at me. He sure just go to the right side of the stage and Ramrod helped me move the equipment cases that blocked people from entering. I work my way up to the first opening that I can get through and be behind them. The first person I meet is Bear dropping liquid acid onto the back of people’s hands and then they licked it off. I stuck my head out and he put four big drops on it and I licked it off. The first song Sugar Magnolia ,which was new then. I found a piece to sit and it was behind pigpen. I really liked him because he played some songs by Lightning Hopkins . I at the first set break I wandered over to check out their gear. Jerry spotted me and walked over and passed me a big fat joint of some of the best weed I had ever smoked. So we passed it back and forth until it was half of it gone and bye then people saw what we were doing and started over. so I thanked Jerry and went back to where I had been sitting behind Pigpen. I asked Bear if I could get some of his acid he hooked me up with his local dealer. Also good people. I really liked Phil and now he is only a great memory, like Jerry along with all the other people that I were in the family. Roll Away The Dew sisters and brothers and keep the faith ❤️⚡️🎸⚡️
thank you so much for this post. such intelligence piercing through, riding on, overwhelming the coke, the perish, whatever...no worries....like bill evans....purity shines no matter what. : ) you can see, feel, hear the clarity manifest in the personality. i miss this man.
what a presence, naturally generous, expressive gentle conversation. Always something to learn. This part: solo career happened almost by accident when the Dead wasn't touring he was horny to play and met Merle....
Hold up - MTV used to like, play music and interview actual musicians?! Jerry Garcia>Jersey Shore?! Nah, I don't believe it (even though I saw it with my own eyes).
Ha, Buckwild, I haven't thought about that godawful show in years. Didn't that get cancelled because one of those guys got drunk and flipped a four wheeler and died?
Woahhh whoever is saying this is from 80, 81, or 83 (you know who you are), you guys are way off! A quick google search will show you that he looked nothing like this in those years. I'll keep the real date a mystery :) As has been said before me, have a Jerry Christmas!
Not to burst your bubble but this is actually 1983. The '82-'83 JGB tour was the only time drummer Greg Errico and the two girl back up singers toured together,
So fascinating and relatable. This man cannot be replaced, Jerry is a one of kind.
He's very right, there is a certain type of person in every generation that enjoys and gravitates towards the Grateful Dead 💙
Jerry is missed and always will be ... He's standing on the moon now

The kindest person I've even know of!!!
what jerry says about only playng one guitar to me makes sense, I never understood why some musicians go on stage with a bunch of guitars.
portraitphenomenon makes sense to me also
I saw mastodon last night and Brent switched guitars like 10 times it was so annoying
A very genuine man..
Major trauma. 😂😂😂
this is hilarious
wouldn't have expected blues for allah to be the stained glass one. god, i would love to see the Skull & Roses cover like that
PinkFloydrulez... that'd be so awesome
Jerry Garcia didn't do drugs. Drugs did Jerry Garcia.
Love u Jer
Because they may have separate tunings for different songs or want a different sound and have a different set-up for it.
Miss you Jerry! 😂😜🤙

June 2nd, 1983 Not sure it that's record date or airdate. People should include this info when posting.
when MTV meant MUSIC television
this interview date appears to be 6/2/83
I miss Jerry, man...
My taped might be coming untaped.....Happy Birthday
From this excellent interview to "buckwild". What happened ?
Ha, Buckwild, I haven't thought about that godawful show in years. Didn't that get cancelled because one of those guys got drunk and flipped a four wheeler and died?
Fuck to be honest this is me in 2020
Notice the black shirt
Why does she call him Willy at the beginning of the interview...
Anyone know what year this is? 1983?
Around then, yes
a true god, love the grateful dead!
He hated being called that. But I would die for any monicker, so yeah.

mjx71 Lol wtf I have no idea what was going thru my head when I wrote that. Looking back on it confuses me
Must be early 83. By summer and year's end his hair was much much longer. He looks more like he did in 82 here.
kind of a dumb name?
