I’ve been told that the cut kick is a cross between a side kick and a front kick. The foot can land diagonally.
A side kick requires the knee being pulled back towards the sternum.

We used to call it "taekwondo powerless yop chagi", after many years in taekwondo, I appreciate a lot your explanation as I'm helping my child training for sparring.

Could you demonstrate the use of elbows & knees when near a clinch & breaking out of a clinch with elbows & knees. This could save a lot of lives on the streets.
    Thanks really, Thank You

Nice video. I just can't figure out why you leave so much power on the table with that front leg side kick.

This is the side kick used in Wing chun and Muay Thai.
In fact Muay Thai call it Teep because they don't distinguish between front and side kick, for them both serve to the puprose: stop an incoming attacker or push out to create distance.
The main differences between a side kick and a "cut" kick is as Alex showed are
    1. The knee on cut is raised directly to the front instead of to the side as a side kick.
    2. The feet in cut kick is oriented in about 45° instead 0° (horizontal).
    3. The contact part in cut kick is the heel or the ball of the feet, in contrast, side kick uses the edge of the foot or the heel. I know there is a variant using the ball of the feet with a full extended feet but it is uncommon.
    4. Cut kick is faster to launch but weaker than side kick.
    5. Cut kick enable to make combination but side kick it is not so easy make combinations because you compromise more your body weight and balance.
In summary they are good weapons for different sparring situations and worth perfect them.

Interesting, I have never heard of a side-kick being referred as a cut kick, why " cut " ?
I often see "cut kick" used in other martial arts to describe the trajectory of round kick either to the leg or head/neck of an opponent, cutting down on its target.
To your knowledge, is the term cut-kick ( as talked about in video ) a translation of korean terminology or does it originate from english speaking teachers ?

    • @alLEDP
      @alLEDP 3 роки тому +3

I think it's called fast kick in korean. "Cut" in english also has the meaning of "blow" or "hit". If you are german speaking: you can also translate cut with "Hieb". And that's exactly how i would describe the motion.
      Cherrio! Keep training!

Great question. From the "Power Era" perspective of the Cut Kick in TKD. I exclusively used this from a closed stance specifically targeting the hip (similar to a teep to the thigh in Muay Thai) to accomplish a few things. It eliminates any spinning counter & conditions my opponent to react. They can either take it, move, or attempt a counter. I would draw out certain techniques I believed I could easily land power shots after causing them to break their posture. Moreover, the foot angle is 45 degrees as well during contect (hips are more forward for following up). The foot should also skim up their lead leg into their hip (shortest route of travel & mitigates any lead leg countering attacks).

I would say this is similar to how you would specify a "check hook" or a "shovel hook" in boxing as opposed to just saying "hook"... Yes, all of them are hooks, but using those different terms just helps to place the technique in context.

For those who still have Qs, If you think of it as being used primarily to "cut" the Opponent's INERTIA it may make more sense. As I understood it, the foot('s lateral border)alignment is not vertical (as in Ap Chagui) nor is it horizontal (as in Yop Chagui), it is about 45 degrees. More to say, but thumb typing! :-D Tae Kwon!
