The set is too dark and sparse compared to the old one. I wonder why they ditched the contestants choosing their categories. Still it would have been fun to see it picked up. Andy isn’t Dick Clark but did a good enough job.
It is ironic that years later, Andy Richter would be an actual celebrity guest player on "The $100,000 Pyramid" hosted by Michael Strahan, taped in NYC during the spring of 2018, and seen on ABC-TV in prime time. Done on an actual set with game pieces and props that mirrored the classic game format (including the big and small pyramids), but with an updated and modern look. That's all I am going to say here. And so it goes...
I've seen clips before but not the whole pilot, my understanding this was meant for TBS and they would have held tournaments for $100,000 and $500,000 had it been picked up (hence the twisting logo in the intro)
@@TimothyMischka Well sir, I attended the THE $1,000,000 PYRAMID taping -- the Tim Vincent-hosted shows -- and you're not missing much. Even with an IFB earpiece guiding him, he wasn't a good fit. As accomplished as he was as an actor and presenter, I gotta believe he must have sensed that, too. I left the studio thinking that this PYRAMID iteration wasn't going to sell.
Mr. Martingale, if these game show on your channel were drugs, I’d be addicted, for these games you can never die from, but just can’t get enough of. So keep the good stuff coming’!!!😅
The $25,000 Charade-amid, is what I’d like to call this. What’s with everyone standing up? I know Pyramid allowed for pantomiming in the front game, but seeing everyone standing instead of sitting just didn’t sit right with me (pun intended). 😂 Overall, the pilot’s OK; Andy was ok and the set was ok. Just didn’t like the fact that the contestants didn’t choose their categories. Some more lost media found; thanks again, Wink. ❤️
It did last more than one season after all and was even made famous by being on the iconic sitcom "Friends". They did a couple things right here - keep the 80's "Tuning Up" theme and a nice introduction graphic. Andy Richter was fine as host and competent but more hyped-up than I personally think a "Pyramid" host should be.
I believe you’re correct. Andy Richter turns out to be a decent host. The set takes getting used to in that there is no physical pyramid. It probably would work better for this time for Game Show Network as long as there is decent game play.
Glad this didn’t get green light. This is definitely good host bad format. Set heavily borrowed from Million Dollar Password and is almost completely non existent.
Well, out of the three incarnations of this show, this one had some spirited contestants. I do like the fact that they did a few things different here. For instance, they did something like Now You See It with the contestants doing an elimination style competition. Pre selected categories was different but keeping with Pyramid tradition, still had to get the best out of 7. Although there was no Mystery 7 or 7-11 involved, least for the round they were on, they got a prize for getting all 7 so it's a nice incentive. The double down is a nice approach for high risk, high reward but it wasn't constrained by getting 21 as in the traditional version. This was experimental for a pilot. Can't fault for what it tried doing. I feel what should've been done was just keep it at the $25,000 Pyramid in the logo and say IF it was picked up, later down the line, increase it.
We're used to people having a choice. What bothers me is that they went to the trouble of giving "clever" names to the categories when they don't have a choice.
I'm cool with this version. The whole not-picking-your-own-category deal makes the game just a bit harder but there's nothing wrong with that. The essence of the game is still there. If your only main complaints are cosmetic, I'd say the pilot did a great job. I wouldn't have minded seeing a season or two of this versus the mess GSN gave us.
Not a fan of this version. Teams got to pick the categories in the original, and that could easily have been done with all the video screens. Richter I a funny host, though!
I'm glad that this version of the show wasn't picked up. Having everyone standing up looked weird, plus you couldn't get the celebrity and the player in the same shot that way. No real strategy since the players couldn't pick categories, plus too many players. No switching pairs midway through to ensure fairness. Plus doubling down was a cheesy play, and the comments by the host about the lights and the sound effects got repetitive very quickly. And let's not forget that the straps on the chair in the winner's circle looked like torture restraints. All in all, they tried, but they changed too much to where it was weird. Pyramid plays best in its classic format.
It would have fit in with the Early 2000's torture gameshows. Also this set is just no. They should have done a videodoor pyramid with trilon turning screens and some seats as well as a few other pyramids for the show.
I didn't hate it. I liked it better than the Donny Osmond version. Andy Richter is a better host. I missed having an actual Pyramid on the set, but at least the set wasn't overly dark and Blue. It felt warm. The 80's version of the theme was also nicely used. This was fun to watch. The bar these days is set pretty low for game shows, but in today's world, I feel this is a keeper. I would gladly watch this on TV every day.
Andy is actually a decent host, and the casting of Mo and Aisha was just as good. Everything else? Not so good... the set was terrible (let's just hang a bunch of giant TV's and call it a day) with no real set pieces aside from the square version of winners circle, and the sound effects and music were just boring and uninspired. Worst of all was the format - three rounds? No choosing the categories? This was doomed to fail.
I agree with the set. It's way too many screens, might as well call the winners circle the winners square. Two things I did like was the theme of course and the double down.
....and I thought "Pyramid" was bland, and uninspired. At least that looked like the game. No choices of subjects? Even worse. Glad this never made it. Never saw the one that did later on (ABC), but they blended the screens with functioning trilons. I believe it's original to how it was.
so…i don’t -hate- this, because the spirit of pyramid is there and andy is a good fit. But the changes made- the lack of a physical pyramid (because the set is sorta shaped like one) the weird cuts and mix of a classic theme and new sfx make this a jumbled mess. However, from what i read about the 90s pilot…this looks positively classic.
There was a lot wrong with the pilot. Why can't the contestants choose their own categories. I hate the Double-Up option. I did not like that noisy contestant. No Mystery 7. The host and the players were fine. There should only be two games in an episode. I did not like the pilot.
This pilot is weird. The set is too bland and too many screens. Andy didn't do bad hosting this pilot. I don't like the categories been chosing for contestant/celebrity. I do like the double down part. Alisha should've gotten buzzed on the slippery things category for saying wet.
I must have watched the wrong pilot. I didn't find much to like about this pilot. Assigning categories saves a few seconds, but seems unnecessary. Surprised by how many people are losing sleep over that. The opening female contestant was hard to watch. I'll admit, there's not much anymore that you could do with the format, I'm thoroughly bored with the game.
Actually no, this is better than Donny's. Donnymid has the "Pearson-APT tries too hard and fails miserably" stink all over it. Donny's not a bad host, but i'll take "lack of set with something resembling the game any day.
@@Superlad9494 I disagree, Donnymid did much better than this pilot. Sure Donnymid was different; but, it's still faithful to the classic. Also Donnymid didn't stink at all, it was great.

The only thing good about this pilot: they kept the Pyramid theme from the 80s.
And they still use it during the 100,000 dollar pyramid years ago. Well deserved 👏

Love it when Thay used the 1980s Pyramid theme from 25k and 100k Pyramid from the 1980s.
Agreed on the theme. The problem with the current $100,000 Pyramid is that they run a midi version of that great 1980s theme.
