If I remember correctly, Murray Schwartz was involved in the syndication of Wheel of Fortune in 1983. Susan Stafford mentioned his name when he and Merv had put together the deal. At the time she left Wheel in 1982, she knew it was in the works.
This format had a lot of problems, but the one that kept bothering me most: They kept saying the odds were x-to-one, yet they kept paying them as x-for-one - i.e., when a bet won, they paid out the odds but didn't return the initial bets to the player's bank.
Marjoe Gortner starred as a crazed National Guardsman in the 1974 movie Earthquake and a prisoner who shoots up a jet in the 1976 made for TV movie Mayday At 40,000 Feet amongst other movies and TV shows.
Marlise was another one of those co-hostesses who didn't do much but was only there because Vanna was popular at the time. At least K.C. Winkler (Wink's old "High Rollers" hostess) did more than serve as set dressing.
This is a pretty good concept as stated it is very similar to others. The set looks good and the show is entertaining. It is has play along value as long as you understand how the odds work. Simple enough to understand. Wonder why it didn't make it to TV
I may have read about this on a thread from Game Show Forum. Here’s what I know: This was from either 1988 or 1989, Monty Hall was the host and Paul Anka was a producer. The game was a “bet on will they or will they not complete the stunt” type, just like The Guinness Game. Viacom was the planned distributor.
Coming back to this, I was right about this, except that Monty Hall had no involvement at all with this. Unless there was another pilot in which he hosted? Lots of 80s cheese within the pilot; the theme, the logo, the set, and host Marjoe Gortner’s hosting was a bit cheesy. And also Dean Goss was the announcer.
Since Steve Friedman was the writer and producer, I would've thought this was a Merrill Heatter production. Especially, since the sound effects were also used on Wink's High Rollers.
Interesting but it's not that original, Wanna Bet, You Bet (uk), the Guinness game have all done more or less the same. The networks were probably a little resistant with the amount of money being handed out here too. I found Marjoe a little over the top as a host.
Entertaining game... the game tries too hard to give everyone a chance to win or lose in the final round. There seems to be very little benefit to not betting all 100 points in the first three rounds.
Only 8 minutes into this and I can't take it anymore. This show is horrible! It's like a Saturday Night Live parody (only without the comedy). The host is awful and there is no play along factor. I've seen pilots where I am confused as to why they didn't make it to air because I actually think they are good. However I'm not confused about this load of trash at all. This should be burned in a fire.
Gortner looks like he could have been a decent host, trouble is this has a limited format, can you just imagine being the talent coordinator for this show? Argh the horror!
Roving reporter K.C. Winker was a model on Wink's High Rollers.
i know “daily double” is a horse racing term but it’s so ingrained in Jeopardy at this point
KC Winkler was one of the models on High Rollers (1987).
I read that hostess Marlise Ricardos is married to Paul Boland. Who was the winner of the Gong Show 1989 episode Wink posted on his UA-cam channel.

This was a very interesting pilot to watch today. It'd be nice to find out what other events would the contestants bet on.

I had the same irritation watching those payouts.
Dean Goss was the shows announcer.
K.C. Winkler looks so gorgeous and she is a great water skier, Betcha is a rare and a super game show classic!!

You betcha Wink (or his estate) have every single game show pilot ever created.
I wonder how many people remember when host Marjoe Gortner was co-host of the Real People spin-off Speak Up America.
Interesting to see singer Paul Anka help produce and write the theme song for this show!! Very entertaining!!
I think it's a different Paul Anka.
Dean Goss (the up & coming announcer from the 2nd half of the 80s) doing the announcing. The host reminds me of David Sparks.
Marjoe was clearly reading from cue cards like Sparks, and both hosted poorly.

It was considered for Syndication in 1989 by Orbis Communications.
Well Marjoe Gortner is hosting here, maybe there was another pilot with Monty?

Excited to see!
the odd stopper sound fx sounds like if its from a Mark Goodson production fx. namely Family Feud.
Since Steve Friedman was the writer and producer, I would've thought this was a Merrill Heatter production. Especially, since the sound effects were also used on Wink's High Rollers.
It was also used on Trivia Trap.
It's like Family Feud with a bit of Wordplay mixed in plus an old Atari 2600 for the "wheel".
And also "Trivia Trap" with the sound effects.
I'm hearing some old school Atari 2600 sound effects in there.
A future hostess on a game show that the announcer on this show would do as well 🙂
Alright -- so who among you know anything about our new friend Marjoe Gortner?
Did he read the entire show off cue cards?
Interesting but it's not that original, Wanna Bet, You Bet (uk), the Guinness game have all done more or less the same. The networks were probably a little resistant with the amount of money being handed out here too. I found Marjoe a little over the top as a host.
Yup he brings an unwelcome manic energy to the proceedings
Actually I thought Marjoe was energetic without being annoying
i wonder if you block the music due to copyright issues and use substitute ones? i heard a little bit of the Rocky theme at the end.
Lack of Background Music in the Pilot?
Given the overall pacing, I betcha this didn't make air.
the host was in earthquake
I liked the show .
MARJOE GORTNER ONE COOL DUDE
That locked in noise later came in as a sound effect on Mad Libs. If this was on fox today, KevonStage would host it.
Virtual sets back in the day really were awful.
I liked this game. It had a similar betting format to the Final Headline round in Wink's Headline Chasers pilot. Which I liked better than the series.
Awesomeness video please do more thanks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The announcer was Dean Goss.
This pilot was not picked up because the show's estimated production costs were too high.

I Still Can’t Stand The Viacom V Of Doom
