    I like the printed instructions you overlay your picture with and that you mostly show what you're doing nice and close and minimize view of yourself which is handsome!
    Leaving the print on the screen a little longer would give me a better chance to read it. Thanks for your training and teaching.

      Thanks. I go back and forth with print as it can be paused. Some say its too long lol and blocks picture. Cheers.

      why not pause the video then read it at your leisure or you can take a screen shot and have it as a reference. If you are watching this on your TV and your screen darkens whenever you pause a video just tap the button that has the U-turn arrow and your screen will return to normal brightness while paused.

    This is my second year gardening. I've learned so much but still have a ways to go. I will be trying this method to get rid of the fungus gnats that have taken over my seedlings. I've tried Neem oil too but hydrogen peroxide seems much safer for my seedlings. Thank you so much for this video!

    Gary, QUESTION: I would like to prepare seed starting mix and have it reserved for next season. I’ve used boiling water to sterilize the mix as you’ve showed us. Should I use the boiling water even if it’s going to sit for several weeks or can I cover it and let it sit - will the potential fungus gnat eggs die? I have a 35 gallon barrel with a top, I was gonna either soak the mix with boiling water or maybe just cover it. What do you recommend?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Рік тому +1

      You dont need to use boil water again if it is sealed and sits some where safe. You kind of want it to dry in the house and they cover. Covering we mix makes mold and such.

    Gary for the first seeding H202 soil dredge do you let it fully absorb into the soil and dump excess or just let it sit until evaporated? I planted my peppers last night and used the mix at the same time, I hope I didn’t do something wrong by using the dredge at seeding time. The liquid was about a half inch in in the tray with the cells, I’m using medium cells i purchased from your shop, and this morning the liquid was fully evaporated and the soil is moist. Also, I’m hoping I won’t have to pot up but Im planting lots of peppers so the large cells wouldn’t work for me because of space restrictions.

    Gary, slightly off topic question. I will be expanding my container garden this year, mostly using grow bags, but some earth boxes. As far as medium, I've tended to just throw in Miracle Grow Potting mix. Everybody and their cousin seems to have a version of their own potting mix recipe and one of the main benefits that is mention is price. What I never see is though is mentioning that the diy potting mix does not by default come with the fertilizer that is included with Miracle Grow. The slow release fertilizer that it includes is supposed to last up to 6 months. Once you start adding the fertilizer/admendments needed to the DIY potting mixes, are you actually saving that much money? With DIY I know it gives you more control over what and how much is in the soil for the plants, but even if you have to tweak the Miracle Grow (or other pre fertilized mix) you are starting from an already establish base level of npk for 6 months that you would otherwise have to provide from other sources for the DIY mix. What are your thoughts on this? I know there are other benefits, but I'm curious as to this part of the equasion and completely avoiding the organic vs chemical debate right now.

      It is just expensive by the bag and the MG fertilizer works but it is low. It feeds, but feeds what, most likely flowers and not the more demanding vegetables. I treat bagged products that have fertilizer, as if they dont. So it doesnt save me money. Making it is a huge money saver. While you are at HD buy a bail of peat, and cheap bags of topsoil and mix them 50/50. That works well to and amend as you wish with compost and fertilizer. Good luck.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I guess I just need to sit down and actually do the math. It just always seemed that the DIY mixs "start" with Peat/coco coir/Pearlite/Vermiculite etc..but... then when it's time to actually plant it's "add some bone meal, add some lime, add some worm castings, add some epsom salts, add some rock phosphate, and .. and.. and.. then add these 3 things every two weeks, etc. etc. so started to wonder if in the end something like the MG bypassed the majority of that and all that was left was add a thing or two during the rest of the growing season to either top off npk, or address an individual need. Again I greatly apreciate you replying and I am slowing working through all your videos.

      @@nathanielsaville3361 I always think about that too. By the time you add this, this and that, could I have just bought some bagged soil?🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @nathanielsaville3361
      @nathanielsaville3361 Рік тому

      @@carleanr4051 I think it's a trade off between time, money and scale. I sat down and looked at what I had available to me from the various stores and started working out the math. There is no doubt that it is less expensive to make your own, but there is a trade off particularly if you are doing small scale or modest container gardening. To mix your own, particularly to match some of the most common ratios/recipes you end up buying certain things in bulk which inflates your starting cost. At the smaller scale, just buying the premixs can end up being a lesser expendeture (when you add time/tools/space) for that year. The cost savings (which aren't small) for the mix your own in bulk gets realized either at a larger scale, or over time. But space = storing the remainder of the bulk product somewhere till next year. Plus there is the cost of your time and labor. There is a differnce between just filling a container straight from a pre-mix bag and getting everything together to mix your own. To do your own requires space, plus things you don't think about like a tarp to mix it on, or a wheelbarrow, lots of buckets, etc. If you don't already own those things that is another up front cost, or replaced with time and effort, again, if you continue to use those things year after year the cost per year keeps getting smaller. So it's all a matter of investment. If you have the time/tools/space/initial up front cost etc.. You come out better as a return as it is realized over either a larger garden or split across multiple years of use/reuse. For a smaller garden/containers, and if time and space are precious, then going with a premix could have a smaller up front cost (when adjusting for time/tools/space) for that year, but if you repeat that year after year in the long run you are absolutely spending more overall. I figured out that I'm at a scale that crosses the overlap between the two for me. I will be mixing my own/but not completely. I've found a relatively economical premixed potting mix that seems to be a very good quality and I am ammeding it with Cow Compost at a 2-1 ratio. 2cuft mix, 1cuft Compost. I need 18 total cuft for my containers. If I went with a name brand premixed I'd need 12 bags and it would be about $12 per cuft. With the mix I am doing to get a total of 18cuft it will cost me about $6.30 per cuft, so almost half. But I have the time and space to mix and store working with 18cuft of material, I also already have on hand fertilzer to make up for what would have been already in the premix, not that buying it new would add that much spread over 18cuft. But heres the thing, if I were only doing say 6cuft, the price per cuft would remain the same for each, but I'd end up buying $72 worth of premix vs. $57 worth of the build my own and have 3cuft left of material that I would need to store etc. So $15 dollars savings for the year, but I have to spend time, tools, space to mix, and store + small additional cost to match ferts in the bagged premix. At small scale, not a bad trade off, as the scale increases though, it rapidly becomes harder to justify inital cost.

    So annoyed that I didn’t watch this two weeks ago. I kept waiting for my tips to dry out to pour the peroxide solution from the top🤦‍♀️ We had a warm up in November right before Thanksgiving in DE. We had our floors done and the guys left the front door open. We didn’t notice until the left that one of the room they were in had the window open with no screen and with the light in we noticed 100’s of gnats that I am still trying to get rid of. I’m finally seeing a few here and there but what a pain🤦‍♀️ I went in panic mode when I was starting my herbs and onions with worry they would all come back😂🤦‍♀️🤔🤨

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Yep. That is why it disinfects in part. H202 breaks to h20 an O and it cleans. I have had bottles sit for years and it stays good. You can actually take a small sip and if it bubbles you're good. Or put a drop on the soil and it will bubble. Once mixed, I use it right away as a drench. My spray bottle is opaque and it stays stable in there too btw.
