and kudos for flagging the overspray of the pond greatstuff. Probably just saved me from making the same mistake with that overnight expansion surprise.
I like this design! Those are some lucky frogs! It was a nice bonus to hear the frogs calling in the background. Thanks for sharing this video of the build and also for the footage of supper time at the end! 💕
This was fantastic. This is one of my personal favorite dart frog vivarium builds because it looks complete and professional but this is something I can realistically do as well. Thank you!
Pro tip, When scrapping any kind of gunk off a glass tank with a blade, wet the glass first, really helps the blade sliding on the glass and alot less chance of scratching the glass, you wouldn't sponge down a dirty car when its dry.....
very nicely done and clearly shown. I am getting ready for a dart frog build and Dan from Amphibicast gave me the homework of watching some of your videos. Thank you!
Awesome build ! I've had my exo-terra built for over a month now while I've tried unsuccessfully to raise fruit flies. Giving up, I've put in an anole (from my electric meter). He has adapted immediately. :-) On the top, I've had glass cut to fit on the existing screen. It works fine so far.
@@NorthernFrogger Just my fault. Drowning them, suffocating them, mold, etc. It takes a couple of weeks to recover. Having frogs depending on me feeding them fruit flies would not be good. There is plenty of readily available food for lizards: crickets and all sorts of worms.
@@ravingcyclist624 I'm pretty late with responding, but perhaps newborn red runners would suffice? They're very small, being slightly larger than adult fruit flies. Once a large enough colony population is achieved(after 4-6 months), you'll have baby roaches constantly. They're far easier to maintain than crickets. The easiest and simplest solution for preventing mold in a FF culture is with bakers/brewers yeast. I can confidently say it works, after nearly three years of breeding the same flies year round, I've never had mold problems after mixing a fair portion into fresh media when making new cultures. As for drowning the FFs, it shouldn't be happening if you make the media evenly balanced between damp and on the drier side. Slightly more damp than the consistency of mashed potatoes is best. I'm probably too late to respond, but I thought I'd give it a try.
I didn't on this one, but I have has that problem on a couple other builds, so I would probably try using silicone first if I use spray foam again. I think my next couple builds I will be using the foam insulation panels, similar to many of Serpa Designs builds
It's a mix of EcoEarth/Plantation Soil, CocoHusk, some type of fir bark/orchid bark pieces, and some sphagnum moss. It will slowly wear down/come off over time, but I find pretty good results just being very liberal with the silicone and pressing the background mix down into it.
man just yesterday i had one of my Dendrobates tinctorioous bahkos die. Idk what happened it was like 1.5 years old and it just stopped eating and reacted weirdly to the water i misted it with. What was weird is that the other frog inside didnt react to the water at all and is completely healthy. It started getting skinny because it wasnt eating, so i made sure to put extra flies inside, but it still didnt eat.
what is super weird is that the other frog inside never bullied it, is very healthy right now, and is fat if anything because she ate all the extra flies that i put in there for the sick one.
Sorry to hear that, it's always rough losing frogs with no explanation. It could be any number of things, from parasite or bacterial infection, or maybe even something like a congenital defect that finally manifested. The other thing to keep in mind with tincs is that sometimes you won't see outright bullying, but the weaker frog may still be stressed and living in fear. This can lead to them not eating as much, which can make them even weaker and less outgoing and create a feedback loop that is hard to recover from. Or even small/temporary stress could be enough to suppress the immune enough for an infection of some sort to take hold. I would keep a close eye on the other one and try to get her to a vet if she starts losing weight or refuses food.
Yeah I don't like using plexiglass... I find it will always warp/sag over time, and it gets scratched up easily. I do remember reading something a long time ago about it not transmitting as much light as glass, but I have no idea how reliable that info was. I imagine it also depends on the thickness of the piece as well as the exact type, because not all plexiglass is created equal. Where I'm at though, glass tends to actually be cheaper than plexiglass, and I've found most glass shops will cut it to size for you for no extra charge, so it's a no-brainer to use glass 🤷♂️
I live in New Zealand so I can't own amazing frogs like yours But this video was really helpful for my whistling tree frog enclosure.I can't wait to see more of your videos. Good job 👍
Those whistling tree frogs are cool! They look kind of like the chorus frogs we have here... :) Glad you liked the video and thanks for the kind words!
Hey brother I was just curious as to your light set up for your dart frogs and tree frogs do those LED lights you use and I know you use a variety supply UVB or is that not necessary if using a Day spectrum
I love these videos, I would like to own a dart frog one day because they have beautiful colours, don't need cockroaches or critters as their diet and hqve amazing setups
Not really, no. They are not poisonous in captivity because their toxins come from their diet in the wild. There may be some small salmonella risk that can be mitigated by just washing your hands, but you shouldn't really be handling them anyway. Dogs and cats are more dangerous to keep as pets than dart frogs lol.
My buddy told me frogs smell really bad is that true because I really want one in my home but I don’t want to deal with a constant smell? Great build btw
Nah the frogs don't really have any smell at all. The enclosure could possibly start to smell if it's not maintained properly, but a healthy bioactive tank just has a nice earthy smell like the woods after a rain
My family won't let me own any dart frogs as pets. Cause to them they consider frogs to be a "kids" pet. But I want to do something like this with carnivorous plants.
Can someone level with me. If I do a planted dart frog vivarium Will it still smell? Reptile shop said it won’t but I’m not convinced. Thank you in advance for any responses.
I really like the way you did your glass lid, much easier than disassembling the mesh top the tanks come with. I’d use Velcro or strong double sided tape just so it’s not permanently attached though.
Use lots of silicone, and then press the substrate into it. Also, make sure the substrate is completely dry first. It does still slowly wear off over time though...
Very nice tutorial... No blabbering, clear and informative. Thanks 👍

First time I seen someone silicone their doors, I am definitely going to try that :)
Nicely done, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Very helpful video! Thank you for making this.
What a great video thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
as a new bee to this kind of stuff watching this vid your showing me what not to do. thank you
So dope I’ll use this vid as my guide
Nicely done

Beautiful, great work
Outstanding build

another vid full of knowledge , I'm so excited I go pick up a order to build my first Dart Frog Viv . T - 3 hrs and counting till stores open
The content was amazing, but I'm really caught out by that guitar track. It's really nice, I need more of it on loop haha
Do the exo terras have a sort of divider on the mesh top? Does it pose any problems with placing the lights or heating elements?
Thanks for the video.....
New sub, brilliantly well put together full tutorial. If only I was in Canada.
Good job bro! Came out awesome!
As someone looking to get this very vivarium for a tree frog/dart frog set up, can I ask why you replace the mesh top with glass? Is that essential?
I truly appreciate you. I just subscribed.
Thanks for the sub, I truly appreciate it! 😉

I am a wannabe frogger, and enjoy your videos. Thank you, I am just a bit worried about starting as I may be too old, early 60s', you give me hope!!
Never too old, I say go for it! 😉
What is in your background mix? I really like the look of it!
It's Eco Earth/Plantation Soil, Coco Husk, some type of fir bark chunks, and some sphagnum moss
Did the foam pull away from the glass if you don’t use silicone on the glass first?

Great video man ! Can you make a video on Ranitomeya tadpole care ?
I do want to do another tadpole video, but I don't really treat the Ranitomeya tadpoles any differently than the Dendrobates tadpoles
After applying the sillicone layer on the foam, what is used for the background mix? Will the material deteriorate after a few years? Thanks.

Nice video. Do you have to change the clay balls?
No, the clay balls pretty much last forever
Mine molded for a but after I built it. I didn't add any springtails yet.
can you use the background that comes with the exo Terra for the frogs?
Yep, the included background will work just fine!
What part of Canada are you in?
I'm in Calgary

Do you think there is a difference between glass top or plexiglass top?( like for the light or something)

@@NorthernFrogger interesting opinion , the only problem in my mind is for drilling it
Where do you buy dart frogs? I'm in British Columbia Canada
Mostly Just Geckos is in BC. There's also West Coast Amphibians that I think sometimes has dart frogs.
Wohhh 😘😘
What is the foam brand model? first time i see it in black
Where did you get the glass on the top im in canada too and I need that glas in mine I got the same terrarium
I got it from a local glass shop. I just called them with the measurements and they cut it for me and I picked it up the next day.
Where do you get this nozzle ?????????????

What did you cover the net pots with?
Can you tell me where to get those cups you put on the back for planting plants? Did you say net cups?
Yeah, net cups, or I've seen them called net pots too. I ordered mine off amazon
Would you reccomend silicone or gorilla glue for gluing substrate to the background?
I've never tried the Gorilla Glue method myself so I'm not too sure, but I want to give it a try in an upcoming build

I have some dart frogs in 24x24x24

@@NorthernFrogger thankyou for the explanation!❤️
can you show installation of the light system and misting system?
Sure, I will try to address that in an upcoming vlog!
I am setting up a dart frog tank. Is Gorilla Waterproof Patch and Seal safe to use in it. This produce is different than regular Gorilla Glue.
I'm not really sure, I'm not familiar with that product...

Just a cheap daylight spectrum LED strip

A healthy vivarium will have a bit of a smell, but it shouldn't stink. It's more of an earthy, forest-after-a-rain type smell

Use lots of silicone, and then press the substrate into it. Also, make sure the substrate is completely dry first. It does still slowly wear off over time though...
