I’m new to the hobby but been doing research for almost three months before I pull the trigger. This gives me confidence about my first build I’m about to make. Thanks for the tips man, great video!
Fantastic build buddy! Really loved the narration and step by step process! I feel like anyone has the potential to make a beautiful vivarium thanks to this tutorial! 🐸🌿
I really love the build video and watching it all come together. i love how you went plant shopping in your reptile room, GOALS!! One day i maybe brave enough to make my own background as they are unique and will always be different to the tank next to them.
I'm currently working on making a Mantis Terrarium! I've recently picked up the plant hobby so I wanted to get a terrarium for plants that like higher humidity anyways and while browsing I realized I could just make the terrarium be a mantis enclosure in the future! So, like you suggested, I will be caring for the terrarium for several months before I actually get the animals, so that my plants can acclimate to their new surroundings!
I emailed them a couple of years ago to ensure that their enclosures are not made of tempered glass because not only did I put a drain in my Paludarium, I installed bulkheads for my small canister filter that I run. Im glad they at least incorporated a drain into the design.
Exo terra tanks, at least their smaller models aren't tempered, you can always do the polarized lens test to see if it's tempered or not. But yes, I'm thrilled they included a drain
@@MikeTytula Would all of this work for a Poison Dart Frog? specifically the Dendrobates tinctorius? of course, I would make some adjustments to the topography but overall yes?
These vivariums turned out so cool, and I absolutely love the built in drainage system on the terrarium, I will definitely be swapping out a few of my current terrariums for these.
Awesome video! Preparing a vivarium for some red eyes now and using a lot of advice I found in this video. One question, does the water you have in the pond cover the entire bottom of the tank or do you have it sealed off to only be in the pond?
Amazing vivarium! Good tip with sealing the background too, why didn’t you add isopods or millipedes to this viv as extra cuc? Is it so to do with the substrate or water ?
Awesome as viv! I just got my first one for Green Tree frogs (Aus) and wanted to do a shallow 'pond' at the bottom. How did you do the filtration for the water or is that not needed?
How would this be done exactly? Putting an external filter into a paludereum with a closed lid tank… there’s basically no info on this when searched. I have an exo terra 24x18x36 and want to turn it into something similar and was going to put a normal pump in for water circulation. With 3 whites tree frogs I feel that won’t be enough but don’t know where to begin with putting an external pump in.
Hey Mike! I'm currently putting together a setup for my first amphibians, a pair of WTF's. I wanted to do a bioactive, but I got a little ahead of myself and didn't research enough before putting substrate down, so I don't have a drainage layer. I'm wondering if 1. It's 100% necessary to have 2. I could find a way to salvage the substrate and getting a drainage layer under it
For something like a whites I would definitely have a drainage layer. Shouldn't be too hard to just remove the existing substrate and put a drainage layer down.
i had a juvenile grey tree frog stumble into my kitchen last night he was on the floor and i was schockedd i grabbed him and put him in a cup then woke my brother and we took him out during the thunderstorm and released him near a pond still have no idea how he got in he was so cute though! God brought nature to me i have been pretty housebound since corona maybe i should get out more! thanks for a cool video!
Really nice, I look forward to exo releasing a slightly bigger version! How does the water you have there not become stagnant? Or do you need to replace it every now and then?
I am currently doing some research to set up my first tree frog enclosure and I am very grateful for your video! I have some questions regarding the water part of your build. What kind of circulation pump did you use? The link is not working anymore. The second question: How often do you recommend to exchange the water?
Thanks for watching! Honestly any small aquarium pump would work. And I would recommend picking up a water test kit and testing the water and go based on that. I'll leave a couple links at the end of the comment. You can start doing a substantial water change once a week for the first month of the life of the tank. Aquarium test kit (I never trust the strips): amzn.to/4dauE2X Aquarium pump (I haven't personally tested this one, but it should be good): amzn.to/3WAB9VE
Hey Mike! I’m currently making a similar setup for my fringed leafs. How is your water feature doing without any filter or pump? Is there cleaning problems that come with that? I’m thinking about not using a pump in mine after seeing this.
When securing your rocks for the water portion to the base of your tank, did you just silicon/glue them straight to the glass? What's the best technique?
Im just setting up a terra i don't know what type of plants to have inside the terra and the best subrate can you give me the what type of plants and soil for the plants
One more question. I noticed that you showed the liquitex matte varnish in the video, but had liquitex BASICS matt varnish (which I'm having a hard time finding) in the links. I'm certain they are both interchangeable, but I wanted to make sure you approved of either or for tree frogs? And also, I saw you used craftsmart acrylic paints. Are all acrylics from this line safe, are there colors I should avoid?
I use pretty much exactly what you see in the video, I would say if they are very similar they should be okay, but I obviously can't guarantee anything.
ya absolutely, thats why there is the lava rock base, so water can move freely. We have a small zoomed filter in the tank now and it helps a ton with water clarity if you have issues.
What is the dri-lock for? Do you need to use it if you are using silicone and sticking substrate to the background? Also, do you need any type of filter for the pond? How does it stay clean? Do you have to drain the water periodically and replace it? And if you dont have a "drain" how would you do this? Siphon it out? I am a little lost on the pond section. I have several grey tree frogs.
Did you watch the entire video? Because it’s a method used an alternative to the silicone and substrate method. I would strongly recommend a small filter, or at very least a circulation pump. It’s just like any other aquarium, weekly water changes at a minimum.
Question. Is a heat lamp required for green tree frogs. I’ve been reading they require 25-28 degrees Celsius during the day and lower temps at night. Going to have live plants and i know my mosses are dying because I have the old tank and it fills up with water too much and my soils are disgusting lol. Got this tank coming with the drain. I mean, I’m using the one I showed in the video. That’s all I can really speak to
Ever consider selling prebuilt tanks?
Absolutely! If someone is interested, I would happily build a tank for them.
Mike, I'd like info on a pre-built exo terra tank! I'd be interest in a tank like the one you've done. Size= 12x12x18. Not sure if Exo Terra makes one this size with a drain.
Will a pet store that supplies these actually build the enclosure for you? There entire store is fulll of them I am sure they are way better at it. lol
It really depends on the shop!
are there any discords that people can join for getting into building these and taking care of frogs?
Probably?
What is dry lock colorant? Why is it brown?
It's concrete dye, there are limited options when it comes to the colourants I used.
I bought some pre-colored Dryloc from Lowe's recently and was wondering if I could use it for a tank? From what I can tell, it's the exact same can you used in the Amazon Link, I just requested them to mix in grey at the store.
Uhhhh assuming it is the same colourant I would think it would be totally fine.
@@MikeTytula I'll call them to ask what colorant they used, but I can't confirm that it was the concrete colorant that you used in the video. Should I avoid using it if not? I just hate to waste a $20 can of drylok
@@valeriedavis6834 Im not sure. I dont want to give advice on something I am not familiar with
@@MikeTytula Nope, I completely understand! I'll call them today (who knows, maybe it's the same brand), better safe than sorry. Thanks again!
@@valeriedavis6834 Absolutely! Good luck and let me know what they say!
I need to find drylock but being in the UK I'm not sure on an alternative
Look for Elastopur! That stuff is like magic
@@MikeTytula thanks mike
Can i use this tank for crested geckos?
Absolutely you could!
What about lighting?
As in what lighting did I use on this tank?
@@MikeTytula yeah. What type of lighting setup is good for plants and tree frogs?
@@RichsRantMMAofficialchannel It depends on the tree frogs you are looking at getting but in general a LED grows plants well and provides a bit of extra heat for the frogs. I'd recommend either the TerraSky by exoterra or the skylight LEDs, both are pretty solid and reasonably priced.
@@MikeTytula thanks!
no problem!
Will there be a 30x30x45 cm version of this Tree Frog Terrarium?
I doubt it. But it's possible
Lovely setup. What the dimension o this. Thanks
This tank is 18x18x24
@@MikeTytula thanks. I've just ordered one. Same size
@@ilovemusic0023 That's fantastic! They are great!
How many inches off the bottom when laying down the foam?
Depends on what your scape is and how you want it to look.
Im confused, do they not sell this tank yet or can I just not find the buy button on their website?
There's no option to buy on their website. They are available from any place that carries Exo Terra products! You just might have to get them to special order them in for you
@@MikeTytula ok, i tried amazon but they didnt have but ill keep looking thanks for the info
There are no stores around you that carry Exo Terra?
@@MikeTytula Yes there are but for some reason they don't carry the new exo terra tank. maybe they will eventually.
@@teq0230 You'll probably have to ask them to special order it in for you.
