ONT is built into 320 modems. AT&T also utilizes three distinct wavelengths of "light" for their fiber network (GPON, XPON, & ALT) which each SFP is responsible for receiving. However, a GPON SFP cannot receive a XPON signal, incompatible. Essentially, once the signal passes the SFP then the ONT converts light into electrical data, modem converts the electrical data into digital data (1s and 0s) for computing devices. 320 combines all this into one package. I'm a current tech with AT&T, hope this helps!
ALSO: Your SFP won't work because every ONT has to be activated and your plug in may not be correct wavelength as said before. The reason for this is that we have "splitters" that basically are segmentations filled with customer signals. The only way to differentiate these signals and not accidentally activate your neighbors gateway under your account is through manual activation in the AT&T database. So, your plug-in may be flagged for one, and also no one is going to activate because your gateway was already activated.

I have a stand alone ONT box with my BGW-210. I have a tech coming out to install the BGW-320.. I should just be able plug into the ONT RJ45 plug on the 320 (and not use the SFP), correct?

    • @handle854
      @handle854 Рік тому

@@YzerWings if they are installing the 320, the older Ont & 210 Modem will be removed. An sfp will be used with the 320. Although the red Ethernet port is meant to be a rj45 connection to an external ont. it is not standard practice, & will most likely refuse to install the 320 in this way. I’m pretty sure AT&T systems have this feature disabled anyhow to prevent tech laziness so they’ll have to run a new line and relocate the modem. Usually where the original Ont was for the 210 is not an ideal location to put the wireless access point function of the 320. An example would be an Ont installed in the garage, then an Ethernet cables from there running to the living room where the modem / router is. When the tech comes to replace this setup with the 320, Obvi the modem / router being in the garage is a bad idea, quality service-wise. So now the tech will have to re-run the fiber line into the home to install a 320.

    • @YzerWings

@@handle854 they will definitely not be running a new line across my property. I will tell them to try the ONT RJ45, see if it works. If it does, then he can leave and I can do the rest. ATT has already had to lay fiber across my back yard 3 times, what a total PITA. What a waste of time to have to reconfigure what is already in place. Makes zero sense.

I love it when people associate gaming and Gig speeds. If all you do is game on your PC and browse anything close to a gig is a waste of money. Now in some areas you mind a well have it only due to cost. For example in Dallas I can get 1Gig plus HBO Max for $60 a month. Where 300Mb is priced at 45. So mind as well get the gig, but I have seen some people have to pay alot more for gig because they either use another service or ATT is just higher in that area. If that's the case 200-400 Services are well above what you need to game.

Bridge mode? Interesting. I believe att gateways authenticate to the network by MAC address and if I had to guess doesn’t allow 3rd party equipment authentication. In the case of the 320 I’m not sure if the network is looking for the MAC address of the RG or the Mac of the SFP adapter. The SFP adapter used is dependent on the type of splitter in the PFP you are assigned out of where the fiber from the office splits it’s signal into the distribution cable to the field. There’s standard optics, alt optics and the newer gponx splitters that are 64 port splitters as opposed to 32 ports. The BGW 320 I’m looking at right now has a red data port that’s labeled ONT so I’m not sure if you can feed it with an Ethernet cable from an 010 ont like the 210 does or not. If I had to guess I’d say no. I’m about to do a 320 swap coming from a 210 that’s fed by a 010 ont. if anyone knows please post.

Currently have the NVG599. Using it as just the modem, no wifi, and instead using an old Apple Airport Extreme for house Wifi, and Ethernet to master computer. Would love the BG320 to do the work of both routers. But a few questions - how's the range and strength of the WiFi on this? (Figure it has to be better than my Airport Extreme from 2015). And did I hear you right? If I plug in a drive to the USB port on this, my home network won't see it? Good to have this review. Wondering if I should just stick to having two routers and replace the Apple router with a Netgear Nighthawk AX8 or the TP link Archer AX 6000, and keep the old ATT router as just the passthrough.

    • @SPXLabs

I'm in a 1800ish sq ft home and it covered the entire place, as far as strength I'm not entirely sure, casual browsing and youtube watching worked but the gateway was and is already mostly centralized. There is no way to configure USB storage devices to be available to the network. So with that in mind it sounds like no matter what you will have to use two routers if you plan to continue using the Airport.

For those who want the bgw320: long story short from my struggle with att cs. Say your bgw210 is constantly dropping, request replacement with the bgw320, INSIST that a service appointment is made with a tech to install. The is a necessary modification to the bgw210 ONT to run optical to the new bgw320. You cannot request a mail in replacement to install a 320 for yourself, as att system will “correct” the order made by cs and you’ll get the same old 210 in the mail.

All I did was tell customer service that my speeds would rise and drop drastically, which it would if I moved from one room to another in my tiny house. This warrants a replacement by their standards, and you can ask (ie demand) for a 320 replacement done by a service tech appointment (the only way to get the 320 is by tech appointment). Once you have an appointment, cost covered by warranty, it doesn’t matter how much work or line they have to run. The $100 cost is the same for any tech appointment, no matter the work, so either you pay or it’s covered by att (this is my understanding correct me if I’m wrong). My old ont was 4’ away from the router, all they did was remove the old powered ont on the wall and run an optical cable to the new 320, so that cable length is dependent on how far your old ont is to your router location. But again, it doesn’t matter the amount of time or materials because the cost is flat rate.

Most of it would be pretty easy except for fishing through a wall (including a firewall) UNLESS I relocate where the new modem would go. I suppose it could go in the little IT cabinet since from there I could wire the house via my gigabit network switch. I’d then need to get a wifi 6 router for the downstairs. What arrived today was the same old model that I already have (BGW 210, which drops wifi connections all day long). I tried asking them to fix the mistake via online chat, but the rep (and the supervisor that I escalated to) were completely useless and wrote tons of typos and nonsense. So I decided to call. The person I spoke with said there is no way to request a BGW 320 in particular. What I receive will be random. I said it doesn't make sense and is a waste of everyone's time. I asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor refused to take the call and said that I *could* request a technician to bring a BGW 320 but that it would cost $450 + installation (required). Obviously I would never agree to that nonsense. I'm so tired of AT&T. What would you recommend I try tomorrow? Thanks for your great video.

The SFP port is ONLY for the AT&T fiber connection, not for you to hook up to your own hardware.
STOP USING PORT FORWARDING and look at using a reverse proxy.

WiFi 6 is a standard, meaning the hardware on board can achieve the parameters established that details what wifi 6 can achieve. 2.4ghz and 5ghz are radio bands that WiFi devices are allowed to operate on. So there is nothing you need to do to enable WiFi 6 because the hardware is already doing it.

I'm very surprised you were able to get them to so easily switch you to the new gateway. I've read on AT&T forums that it's virtually impossible based off the experiences of others. Some users tried it up to three times, but just kept getting the old gateway. I'll be getting the new gateway soon, but ONLY because I'm upgrading to either the 2 gig or 5 gig fiber tier and the BGW 320 is necessary for those speeds. I'm even more surprised that they didn't charge you a fee to come out and switch you to the new gateway. I wish I had done this a year ago. But the difference would be limited because I still would've been using pass through mode.

    • @Eliminator5555

@@SPXLabs You definitely had it easy. Very surprised the tech didn't say that your old gateway was actually working fine and thus have you charged for the $100 service fee. The techs are CWA members and while they're generally fair, they won't hesitate to charge for their time if they believe it is merrited.
One time I called to have a faulty gateway replaced with a newly delivered one, and it resulted in them starting to charge me a $10 per month equipment fee, rather than the inclusion of the equipment at no cost, which is what I had contractually agreed to during my first year of fiber service with AT&T. So that was incredibly annoying. And rather than putting me back on the original monthly promotion that deducted and zeroed out the $10 monthly equipment fee, all they could do was give me a credit of $10 per month, which resulted in me being charged about $1 per month in taxes for the equipment rental fee. Whereas it should've just zeroed out the $10 monthly fee leaving no taxes.
Instead I was being charged the $10 fee plus tax and then just credited back $10 per month, which technically left me paying the dollar in taxes per month for the gateway. It wasn't about a dollar breaking me. It was about the principal of them breaking the terms of the contract and trying to charge me any amount at all for the gateway during that first year of service.
So I then had to call back and have that additionally adjusted. It was a real pain. And this was all just to have what was actually a defective gateway replaced. The whole experience was VERY frustrating and annoying because I never made a change to my services or consented to a change. It's AT&T's responsibility to provide functioning equipment and holding them to that doesn't authorize them to change the billing arrangement.
So I'm really shocked at how smoothly your entire process went in getting the new gateway. You should take advantage of the get the 2 gig and 5 gig speed tiers for at least a month each and then post a review of each new tier to your channel.

But if I’m a new customer they will provide me with a WiFi 6 gateway, but if your an existing customer you will have to wait and we don’t know long that will be. And by the time they get around to me WiFi 7 gateways will be available, but for new customers only. I estimate my wait time will be between 10 - 12 years, but by then it really wouldn’t matter because we will probably be dead from global warming. Such is life.
