  • A user, Cats, informed me of a SFP+ Module that would work with the Ubiquiti UDM Pro. This module allows for 1G, 2.5G, 5G, and 10G modes. So by connecting my UDM Pro to the 5Gb Ethernet port on the BGW 320, I was able to overprovision my network and get more bandwidth from my ISP.

Hey that's me! Glad it worked out, I've seen a few comments that mention Comcast - yes, it does work with them as well as long as you have a modem capable of doing a 2.5Gb link. I use a similar Flyprofiber one (I provided two options) and it works just the same. UDM Pro, Cheap ConnectX-2 card, etc, all work just fine.

If you had 5GB/5GB, then you are on their new XGS Fiber Network... This means you can bypass the White AT&T Gateway altogether. You'll need a WAS-110 SFP+ ONT Module, and the programing takes only a few minutes. It continues to work after power outages, restarts, etc. It allows you to plug the Fiber Directly to your Unifi System. I am using it myself, and its impressive that the speeds are so much better without AT&Ts equipment. Highly Recommended!

An AT&T technician told me this morning that they always provide speeds faster than what you purchased by quite a decent margin sometimes up to 20%, and the only reason it slows down to the speed you paid for or lower is because of copper wiring

It's not really "over provisioning" , most providers will set your bootfile bandwidth to a speed higher than what you are paying for to account for overhead, etc... and this is common in shared residential or business class areas for ISPs.

Frontier (x-verizon) always gave me 10-20% more bandwidth - My guess it's to make up for their crappy routers (Actiontech, Greenwave) so that the customers 'see' the full speed during tests before they call support and complain (eg you get only 480 instead of 500) ... because on their side (Terabit Nokia/Lucent Alcatel/Ciena routers) they are able to control the speeds very well

I think there's some misunderstanding of the provision. You the end user can't overprovision anything THEY control it all. You the end user are just increasing YOUR bandwidth or capacity allowing you to maximize your connection. A device will NEVER reach full bandwidth it's rated for, 1Gb maxes at about 940Mb. But if you put a 10Gb in you can reach 9000Mb so you can potentially max out your 1Gb, 2.5Gb or 5Gb connection

AT&T uses 802.1x authentication, which is why you have to use one of their modems to connect. If you have the older combo with a separate ONT and modem, you have two bypass options: 1) eap_proxy method, which still requires the AT&T modem for initial authentication, or 2) getting valid certs off the AT&T modem and then configuring your own router to use them to authenticate.
Option 1 is well documented and fairly straightforward to do. Option 2, to my previous experience with it, was a nightmare that I was never able to get working. I ran the eap_proxy method for a while, but honestly it's kind of pointless because there was no perceptible performance difference and, again, you still have to keep the AT&T box around for reauthenticating after a power or service outage.
l think you could potentially bypass the BGW320 if you can get a set of valid certs, use those with your router to do the 802.1x authentication, AND have a router with a SFP port and the right SFP module to connect the fiber line directly to your router, but honestly I don't think it would be worth the effort.
Sure, it would be nice to get rid of one extra piece of equipment, but unless you have issues with being double natted or some other uncommon use case, I really question the need to go through all the hassle to get around it. I have the BGW320 now and honestly don't have any issues dealing with bridge mode.

Can't. With AT&T you need to use the BGW320 (that gateway) because it's both an ONT and router in one. There are currently no bypasses or ways to use any external device to run it, unlike the older non-XGS-PON installs (that used a separate ONT) - but they also don't support >1Gb. Maybe we'll get something at some point, but for now this is what we have.

You merely put a module that can handle XGMII in your UDM, which, by the way, is a pretty horrendous appliance to start with, Ubiquiti stopped being a reputable company in this space when they abandoned their edgerouter product line, which was one of the best back then. You were literally limiting your speed yourself to start with, you didn't "unlock" anything here. Cute though. Also love the Ubiquiti shirt, I guess you need all the help you can get to give yourself some semblance of authority on a topic you do not master at all.
