  • During the height of the Cold War, weapons ran hot in the jungles of Vietnam. Combat along the overgrown trails, the wide open fields of rice-paddies or the marshes of the Mekong Delta, was not only exhausting and relentless, but also the place where many of the old doctrines of warfare did no longer apply. The western coalition had to face the elusive Guerilla-methods of the North-Vietnamese forces, who prepared ambushes and traps along the marching routes. The eerie quietness of the jungle was all too often broken by a sudden explosion of violence as troops marched right into the fire.

Small thing, but Indy’s comments about being a kid reminded me of this. My mom, who was also born in the ‘60s, talks about how three of the defining memories of childhood were watching the napalm explosions on the news, her quiet and generally kind brother coming home from Vietnam and being utterly changed, violent and angry all the time, and also the time she forgot to close the window and the DDT spray came through her window. She said she could feel it coat the insides of her mouth and nose as she was breathing and it made her sick for a few days.

And the big issue is, it did not was away.
Plants and animals got in them, and where eaten by humans, wich made it pass into us. and our body could not break it down.
A theory goes; That is probably why so many people died earlyer for 30/40 years ago.

Our WWI vets are gone. Soon our WWII vets will vanish as well. Talk to Korean and Vietnam War vets while we still have them and learn their stories. My dad was a med-evac pilot with the 101st, who flew into combat zones to retrieve the wounded. The VC would intentionally wound GI's because they knew it would bring more to get them out. My dad's helo got hit by sniper fire as they descended into a narrow opening in the jungle. Aborting the landing because it was too hot, he took off and made an emergency landing at a nearby friendly zone. As they shut the aircraft down, the engine didn't ease down as you normally see a helo do; the engine ground to a screeching halt just a couple minutes after landing. They had taken a hit in the transmission's vitals somewhere. Had they been in the air as if routine, the whole crew and aircraft would've been lost as it would've seized up midflight. He received the DFC for quick thinking, immediate action, and saving his crew and aircraft.

Now we enter my Dad's era of being in War. My dad served in Vietnam, he was a demolitions expert and would be the person to call when they had to blow up a roadside bomb. He handled C4 and all kinds of explosives. I've seen photos he shot. Some cool, like a Huey going down in a field, and an airstrike. And some....not so cool looking pictures, like the aftermath of a roadside when refugees got caught up in it. My dad is lucky, nowhere near agent Orange, and seen lots of death and destruction that he was able to walk out of it without his mind breaking. He is the most caring, critical thinking man you would ever meet and would be surprised if he said he was boots on the ground during that war. And later he became a Drill Sergeant! That was a great growing up experience, lol. He is still alive, and very healthy.
A funny story he told me was he was arguing with his CO about something, but he had a brick of C4 in his hands. Now for those who don't know, C4 needs a charge to blow up and is very durable by itself. So he sat there and emphasized his points by slamming this brick of C4 on his CO's desk during this exchange, making him jump each time. He told him "why are you so jumpy, it's harmless now" when he left.

My father arrived in nam at the height of the Tet offensive. He was a member of the 199th Infantry Brigade, was a bodyguard to a chaplain and Medal of Honor recipient named Charles Liteky, also moonlighted as a tunnel rat. He was not so lucky in regards to Agent Orange exposure or PTSD, especially since he was assigned to Walter Reed's Traumatic Amputee ward when he returned home. To say he saw some shit is an understatement. He IS quite literally too angry to die, seeing as he's survived cancer and a heart attack.

I may not agree with the government sending soldiers to die in Vietnam, but I respect those who served. Respect to the Vietnam veterans and I do not think their treatment after the war was justified at all. My grandfather might have also been in Vietnam but he's not a good guy for unrelated reasons so we don't really talk about him. Nevertheless, those who served do deserve respect for their service

My Dad is a Vietnam Veteran.🇺🇸 Knowing now what happened to him over there, I don't know how he didn't come home in a flag-draped box, obviously God protected him. It was a horrific war, that should not have happened, and Washington DC tied the hands of the military.
My brother and I were very little, both still in diapers, when my dad went to Vietnam for 13 months. He came home with a lot of issues. As little kids, we thought it was funny that my mom would wake him up from a nap, from across the room, with a broomstick; we grew up to understand why.
My mom also, sometimes has to sleep in another bed, because my dad thrashes around so bad, fighting someone in his dreams, and leaving my mom accidentally with bruises.
The nightmares went away for a long time, but they came back when he lost his beloved SonIL, who was also in the Air Force, and killed in Afghanistan. My mom had told us that "they" came back, when we saw her with bruises. I was over at their house, waiting for one of my kids who was up flying with a friend, and I opened a soda can, and saw my dad go immediately into combat mode, from the sound of me opening the soda can. We immediately got him help at the base.
Despite the issues that plagued my dad from being in Vietnam, my mom always stood with him, she is a proud Air Force spouse. They're going to be married 58 years in a few weeks.
    ❤💙
My Dad just knew he was going to be drafted, so he enlisted when he was 17, so he could choose the branch he went into. He did go into the best branch, which is the Air Force. He made a lifetime career of it, and my siblings and I grew up proud AF Brats! 💙🇺🇸

Yet, you can feel effects to this day.

While MASH was set during the Korean War, it (and especially the film) was a condemnation of the Vietnam War. It was a work-around to be able to criticise the war without drawing too much political flak from supporters of the war (mostly hardline, pro-war congressmen). While it is a funny show (I still don't pass up the chance to watch re-runs), it did not shy away from the trauma and hardship US personnel faced when it could get away with it. The episode where Hawkeye keeps telling the story about killing a chicken is particularly harrowing when it reaches it's climax, and was obviously a story more suited to the realities of Vietnam, not Korea.

The 173rd were the SEAL Team 6 of Vietnam; first men, last men out. Elite troops and top of their class. He was deployed to Okinawa after which he was stationed at Bien Hoa Airbase in Southern Vietnam. He was also the commander of an M56 Scorpion self-propelled anti-tank gun vehicle. He survived as well. Two tours he served in Vietnam, and I am very proud to call him family.

Have you considered making a playlist that has the songs in chronological order? I know it can be tricky because some songs aren't about specific battles (Aces in Exile) and because sometimes two songs cover the same battle, but I find listening to the songs themselves chronologically interesting. Like, I never realized that Winged Hussars occurs in the middle of the Carolus Rex album. But it would be nice to have an official listing to base my playlist on instead of guessing in those tricky cases.

The only TV series about the Vietnam War that I know of is Tour of Duty, but that was a military drama, not a comedy (still a good show, though). It was my weekly fodder when I was a kid.
And if we're talking about bands that had songs about the Vietnam War, I feel it's only fair to mention German thrashers Sodom, who made tons of songs about it (with Agent Orange being their most famous one).

There are stories about the Americans making simple arse mistakes that the Aussies already knew how to deal with (the most famous being the Aussies having camo drinking flasks while the US had Stainless Steel ones) but those could be just that....stories.
What I can say is that from an Aussie perspective my Uncle (who recently passed but fought in Nan) always held that that Americans were scarier then the VC. The VC would always intent to kill you and rarely risked Friendly fire....you knew where you stood with them.
The Americans urge to fire into blind scrub as Indy pointed out got a lot of friendly fire incidents, and as he hinted at, their was far to many friendly fire accidents with Nalpalm.
