Defence of Moscow - Autumn 1941- Sabaton History 103 [OFFICIAL]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 чер 2021
- While it is legendary, there is a lot of confusion and a lot of myths about Operation Typhoon, the German drive on Moscow in the fall of 1941, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union that summer. Today I talk about the first 5.5 months of Barbarossa, and then Joakim and I discuss covers and covers of covers.

Yep, we're back! As we said at the end of 2020, we will continue to make Sabaton History episodes when the boys release new material or something else comes up that we feel we need to cover. And this song is a cover... of a guy that covers Sabaton. Confusing? Nah, just watch the video and it'll all make sense. Enjoy!

One song that I'd love to hear Sabaton take on would be an account of the sacrifice of 155 Battery, Royal Artillery at Sidi Nsir in 1943.
That battery fought to the muzzle to buy a crucial 24 hours to organise defence and indicate the path of the German offensive, allowing half the german army in N Africa to be shredded in Hunts Gap.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!
Can you ask joakim what he thinks of all the different sabaton Nightcore covers of songs on UA-cam because there are a couple of channels that do it really well in my opinion but there are plenty more that do a terrible job in my opinion
"History is what actually happened, not what we would like to have happened." That is one of the best quotes I've heard in a long time
Alternate history is what we would've liked to happen.
Too bad one cannot fully trust history as it is totally biased in favour of the country it is written in. All do some whitewashing. E.g. today the Germans try to whitewash the Wehrmacht and make the Nazi's and the Waffen SS the only bad guys.

I really, really missed this. I grew so used to ending my terrible, pandemic Tuesday workdays with my favorite nerds that I have felt a bit adrift since we ran out of songs to make new episodes with. I know that things have been difficult to even get everyone together, so I am grateful for all you have done to try to keep this channel running. Tack alla. It's great to see you back in the saddle. Giddyup y'all. \m/
We missed it too!
Unfortunately, just a number of myths about Eastern front. "Stalin didn't believe in German invasion", "Russia had endless human and land resources", "Wehrmacht has been stopped by mud and frost" and so on. For the second statement I advise for those, who are really interesting in, just to type in Google something like "the population of the Soviet Union in 1941" and the same for the Third Reich. I don't even consider German allies. Just to see, that the advantage is not huge. About mud and frost - oh yeah, the Red army got some different stuff probably. Our trucks never stuck in mud, diesel engines of T-34 and KV perfectly turn on at -30 (in reality, Russian crewmen had to build a fire under the tank to start the engine), German rifles and machine guns freeze while Russian do not etc. It was said, that on the 4th of December the temperature was -37 degrees. While the next day the Soviet counter offensive began. So weather prevented mostly for the Red army. Meanwhile, in November, when German army advanced towards Moscow, the temperature was not lower than -5. Not something outstanding for Germans, is it? Like our Russian historians joke: " If general Mud and general Frost served in the Red Army, they would have been executed as traitors".
Me whenever there's a new Sabaton History video uploaded:
*Return of the King*
From the south, the Germans were stopped about a 100 kilometers from Moscow. I grew up in a small town of Protvino, on the north-eastern bank of the Protva river - the town itself was only built after the war, but as children in the late 70's and early 80's, we've played in the actual trenches remaining back from the war - the whole nearby forest was full of those. The land was filled with remains from the war - everything from exploded (and sometimes unexploded) artillery shells and bombs to rusty helmets to rifles and submachine guns. My parents' house is literally 200 m away from the place the Germans had been stopped by the warriors of the 49th Army.
Wow...dude, that is amazing. As an American who loves going to historical places and seeing things from the past, that must have been amazing to see the things that were used to stop one of the biggest invasions in history.
Cool
It's not true that Stalin did not believe the Germans will invade the USSR, the problem was there were tons of reports with an extremely wide range of dates, and the Soviets were too afraid to start concentrating the Red Army near the border, because that could've given the Germans an official casus belli to attack.
That doesn't justify him not doing anything for that. Red army was humiliated anyway because of literally no preparations. And btw, there was a moment, when it was already known of the planned invasion and when an invasion as swift as Barbarossa would be impossible. Stalin is responsible for all of these men to die and a lot more during the war and it would have been much better if he fucked off at least in some military matters as Zhukov will say later.
@@user-vr3xx9tb1c the alliance of Britain and France (two military superpowers of their time) was fully prepared, did it help? Again, everybody knew the invasion will happen, and guess what? That's why Stalin doubled the number of the Red Army personel (2,265 million soldiers in 1939, 4.8 million in june 1941), that's why the Soviets built tens of thousands of tanks and basically that's why they took over Eastern Poland. There were preparations.
Besides, nobody knew how to fight the Germans and their panzer groups. They steamrolled the entire Europe like if it was a bunch of helpless kids, do you really want to blame just one man? That's an incredible oversimplification
@@Solidinius_Snake Don't forget about plants and factories that were prepared to be evacuated to Siberia. It was a hell of planning and preparation. You can not just move your industry over Urals and start production.
Well, after the Germans did invade, Stalin had mental breakdown.
@@EerieV23 He was still resolute though. Stressed to all hell but not quite broken

Will one day Radio Tapok become a guest for Sabaton History? Who likes to see this happen?
As far as Sabaton's covers go, I like Camouflage.
YES!!! Heard the cover recently, relistened to the original. Both classic!!!
My favourite would be Twilight of the Thunder God, which is surprisingly good, when you consider that original is melodic death metal. And also it shows the scale of Joakim's voice when he growls.
Gotta give it to "All Guns Blazing" for me.
I Love hells bells
I love Camouflage, but Defense of Moscow is now my favorite and it is simply because I watched the Radio Tapok song around the time it originally came out.

Is it good?
@@shivs_nb It's pretty good. RTS/FPS aspects are fun, although I found the campaign lacking in design - sort of splintered into 5 lengthy scenarios that are not tied together and a randomized skirmish campaign that has continuity but lacks in mission variation somewhat. I just love how joakim praises radio tapok. He is a really great musician and worth to check out.
Mayor respect and appreciation to sabaton!!!
Thanks for your support!
I’ll be honest, feels very weird this song. Like it is a complete 180. Instead of Radio Tapok doing a cover of them, or them collaborating with Radio Tapok like they did in Attack of the Dead Men (funny how Radio Tapok released the song one day before the official Great War Album release), Sabaton is doing a cover of Radio Tapok of which was done in their style. Feels oddly fitting.
Classic - you start immediately with the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, but for some reason you prefer to forget about the Munich agreement that preceded it
This is common western point of view "we did nothing to start the war, russians did it".
I just want to remind of words one british journalist said about Chamberlain and Munich pact "you were given the choice between war and dishonour, you chose dishonor, and you will have war". This journalist's name was Winston Churchill, you might hear about him)
Did the Soviets even participate in Munich?
@@talknight2 No, only in Eastern Pact. btw 30-40 really madness. everyone shares something, everyone makes pacts with someone with strange wording
At the time, they were abiding by the M-R Pact, but you have a fair point.
We need more Sabaton history

@@SabatonHistory This episode is another fine addition to my collection.
Glad to see you are back. I like how Indy either mentions events that were covered in WW2 in real time here on Sabaton History when a song is about a WW2 event about which he might have already spoken (as they happened in the early parts of the war like Ghost Division or Aces in Exile or Coat of Arms) or talks in WW2 channel about events he might have already covered through Sabaton History. For instance two weeks ago was time to talk about the battle of Midway about which he had talked on Sabaton History.
I hope that both Sabaton and Time ghost team can continue for a long time. Your work is really important dear friends.

The set looks cool
Always great to have new episodes. I really liked that song and the guitar cover of the soviet/russian anthem was something i wasn't expecting to be on the song.
I was waiting for this.
It's kinda hilarious how overstated the "siberian divisions" are. Those 8 divisions, although veteran divisions owing to their experiences with the Japanese, are barely comparable to the tens if not hundreds of thousands of men being brought up from the volga area, central Asia and the Urals. The 8 divisions from siberia were hardly going to stop all of army group centre on their own.
They where well experienced and geared for winter warfare though. The Germans where not and badly prepared for the Winter warfare. The counter attacking Russian units where able to operate in even extreme winter conditions.
@@alexh3974 the "winter" argument makes literally no sense. The siberian were not in fact any more equipped for winter than the other soviet division fighting in Moscow since November. Also the winter wasn't as much of a factor as is usual stated. When winter really got going in January, the Germans somehow managed to stop the soviet counterattacks, but in December they froze to death?
All I'm saying is that because much of the "traditional narrative" of the Eastern front was written by a certain nazi chief of staff and later on reinforced in the literature of the post war era because of the cold War, winter and "special siberians" are used to excuse the German defeat in front of Moscow as circumstantial instead of the all out desperate defence by the whole red army.
@@darthcalanil5333 At -86 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 С), it is extremely inconvenient to be outdoors for a long time. Especially when it comes to being not in urban conditions, but in the field. Considering that the troops were on the line of clashes on a regular basis, severe frost becomes quite a significant factor for itself. In addition, let's not forget that in 1812 Napoleon was already in the same conditions. According to his notes, the French army literally froze to death.
For comparison: in Germany or France, weather conditions comparable to Russian winter are found only in the Alps or similar regions. With the significant difference that in Russia, the "Alps" come almost throughout the country for 2-4 months and the temperature is much lower than the Alpine.
@@Sharptowns -30 C = -22 F
@@Sharptowns The cold was certainly a factor, but hardly the defining factor of the german defeat in Barbarossa. For some reason people conveniently forget that in january when it was just as cold, the germans managed to defend against the soviet counterattacks.
I love your channel keep up the great stuff!!!

Soviet troops provided fierce resistance from the first days of the war, the city of Peremyshl, was occupied by german troops on the afternoon of June 22, but the next morning was liberated by units of the Red Army and border troops of the NKVD . The 99th infantry division of general Dementyev, acting together with the border guards and battalions of the Peremyshl fortified district three times knocked out parts of the german 101st infantry division from the border Peremyshl. The city was held by soviet troops until June 27.
