  • It happened during the last stage of the Soviet-Afghan War.
Already withdrawing its forces, Soviet High Command needed to display its might one last time by recapturing the vital Satukandav Pass. But to achieve that goal, the commanding heights surrounding the pass had to be held against continuous Mujahideen attacks.
In the Battle for Hill 3234, an outnumbered force of Soviet paratroopers held their own against relentless attacks from the Afghan rebels.

    They were only 39
They were told to hold the line...
I'm sure most of you know the rest of those lyrics. And after watching this episode of Sabaton History, you also know the real historical events behind those words.
What some of you might not know though, is the story of the guitar solo in Hill 3234.
As usual when Joakim had written the song, he sent it out to the rest of the band. Much to his surprise though, this time Thobbe Englund - lead guitarist at the time - sent a file back within the hour.
Thobbe had just plugged his guitar in and hit play. He was literally listening to Hill 3234 for the first time when the solo spontaneously popped into his head, and he recorded it on the spot.
And to make this solo even more special: it is that very first recording Thobbe made that ended up on the album!
    Not one single re-take.
Talk about a blessing from the Muses...

I want to break this rumor as well. The CIA did not fund anything that moved who was willing to fight against Afganistan. Remember the US wants to make Allies who would be useful in WWIII so they fund tribes and leaders who are friendly to the west both in idea and will. Bin Laden was not one of them. HIs supplies originated from Pakistan. People forget the top three suppliers of the Mujahadeen were the US, Pakistan, and China. And they all funded tribes based on their own ideas.

From the songs about Soviet troops that Sabaton has made, it seems as if the Soviets only really shined when they were outnumbered and/or under-equipped. The Attack of the Dead Men is probably the most famous example, but Hill 3234 was another one where they were vastly outnumbered. Night Witches showed their improvisational ability with the old, outdated planes they had to fly.
Let's face it. They got their asses handed to them in the Winter War, and they outnumbered the Finns by a HUGE margin. However, that takes nothing away from the heroes of Osowiec Fortress, Night Bomber Regiment 588, and the 345 on Hill 3234.

I guess main reason of that is when equipment is appropriate and reserves are plenty, high command starts passing orders like "you should take Berlin till the 1st of May" or "Finland must fall in two weeks", and haste leads to heavy loses. While when soldiers are at a disadvantage from the very beginning, high command be like "well do what you can, we don't care anyway". And that is time when people can do their best.
When the situation is desperate AND headquarters still interfering, unit commonly doomed. Like in Battle for Height 776.

"Meant little to nothing in the end."
Au contraire, it meant a lot for Afghanistan, just not really in a good way. Before the Soviets kicked in the door and installed their puppet ruler, there was an equilibrium of sorts. I'm not going to say it was a great situation (mainly because I don't know precisely), but it was at least moderately stable. Visitors from overseas came to cities like Kabul and felt safe (A number of hippies made their way there at some point in the 60s), for instance. That weird mix of feudal rural zones and nationally controlled cities is kinda a standard thing in Afghanistan, and it wouldn't make for the most stable of scenarios, but a national government that was willing to work with those other leaders the right way could at least accomplish some things.
After the Soviets swept that delicate balance of power aside, things devolved into fighting between the national government (supported by the Soviets) and the warlords. And when the Soviets pulled out, there was nothing left but the warlords...and suddenly nothing for them to fight against as one. And the West also cut relations, because they were only supporting the warlords because they were fighting Soviets. Civil war breaks out, and eventually the Taliban comes out on top, with particularly harsh interpretations of the old ways being imposed on everyone. Moderates kinda became not a thing. Stir for another few years and then we get Afghanistan in 2001.
So...yeah. It's impossible to say what things would've been like in Afghanistan if the Soviets had just left well enough alone (after all, that balance of power could've been tipped by something other than a Soviet invasion), but there's a lot of things that would've been different.

Unfortunately, all wars are based on politics, and all these goals of "providing international assistance to a friendly nation" rarely lead to a positive result. It hurts a little, because it concerns my country. But to hell with politics. It was a nice discovery when I first heard the song Height 3234, after all, the Russian-Afghan war is more modern events, and the fact that you guys paid tribute to those who defended this place and told about it here, just big thank you.
P.S. Waiting for photos from the barbecue

Both sides did terrible things in that conflict. However, the women in the Soviet controlled parts of the country had more freedom than ever before. Like any conflict, there were multiple sides to the argument. The song honors some brave men. To quote Rudyard Kipling, "Oh, East is East, West is West, and never the twain shall meet, Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgement Seat; But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed nor Birth, When two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth."

I really hope that one day Sabaton will write and sing a song about the battle for the height of 776, during the Second Chechen War. It was a very dramatic episode of the war. I posted the description on Sabaton`s website. I hope you read this.

a russian musician (RADIO TAPOK) made a song about it, im not sure if it has english subtitles though
fun fact: RADIO TAPOK is actually the original creator of the defense of moscow! Sabaton and RADIO TAPOK came together to make an english version, so maybe were getting an english version someday?

it no so good movie, there almost all die (in reality only 6), there is no help (in reality there is artillery and soldiers with ammunition help), in film no point in height (in reality this height help soviet force leave Afghanistan and only then every soldier leave Afghanistan height 3234 get abandoned).
