UPDATE: Since this video was published, the US market version of the TD173d has been released: the XDT20. In my past experience with comparing Japan market to US Market impact drivers from Makita (and, incidentally, Hikoki/Metabo HPT), there's not usually a discernable difference.
Xdt16 best have most except the new jap. Ring light and the xtg but ya id say the 14 isn't far behind oh and I say that cuz the size the 16 smaller better lights and has the 6 settings... well it 3 speeds but you can change 2 different modes I personally keep it on low setting unless I need too raise it it's just smoother idk how describe i have the gen 3 Milwaukee and it's way more powerful then anything but even on low it's too much lol 😂
I know these are not as powerful as the red , yellow options but the way they hit and drive the screws or whatever just feel nicer to me it's just smoother
Ive been buying the Japanese versions. I have the 171,172 and the new 173. I have always felt that performance wise they are practically identical and to see that pretty much validated is nice. My main reason for buying each them, besides me being a makita fan boy and tool addict, is each new version just looks that much more comfortable in the hand. It is very true as well. I think they knew that performance was in a great spot with the 171 so it was just tweaks to ergonomics. The 173 is my favorite mostly because of the ring light and the shifted back base balances it really well. I gave my 171 to a coworker friend but i enjoy using any of the 3. The better results you got from the xdt14 perplexed me. I used to have the 14 and when i got the 171 i did some comparisons with different fasteners in a few different materials and the 171 came out faster most of the time. Not by a huge margin but therebwas a difference.
That's interesting - I mean, variation from tool to tool during mass production is definitely a thing. Although I've usually seen it with DeWalt, not Makita.
Makita drills and drivers are the best balance between precision and heavy duty work. I also beat the crap out of my xdt14 and my favorite is the oil impulse driver.
I’ve got an XDT11 that I bought used at least 10 years ago. I rebuilt my deck summer 2024 and that old XDT11 drove about 2,000 3.5” deck screws, several ledger locks, and some 8” structural screws. A 5ah battery would last all day and still had charge at the end of the day. I was looking to update this old impact driver but why..? It works great and I’m going to keep it until it dies..
Love my XDT14, IMO makita has the best feeling impact on the market. This is also coming from a Milwaukee fan boy. Yes there are others (Milwaukee, flex, and dewalt) who are faster but do not feel near as smooth and comfortable as the Makita. Glad to see the older XDT14 runs just as good if not better than the newer ones.
I just love the purple look of the dtd173 coz the impact driver I’ve had since I was an apprentice has a glow in the dark tip which is probably the same age as me and never had a problem with it. Just keeps getting slower and slower over time and has brushes.
GREAT JOB ON THE GRAPHICS!!!! Best one I've seen so far, keep doing this kind of videos LOVE IT!!! By the way I've been waiting for this video since the first time you mentioned on your channel, Makita fan for life!!

It's a little less balanced but I think it's the best for the money. Good power and all the modes you need if you can ignore the glow ring falling off.
Amen. The '14 has been the center workhorse of my tool bag since it came out. Just does anything I ask of it. If it failed at something it was certainly operator error. To such a degree I have purposely gone out of my way for things like impact resistant paddle bits, and leave my power drill for mixing buckets of concrete.

Got the XDT14 after watching your video. Very happy so far. Thanks! May not be the fastest of the market, but the trigger is very nice. Sinks the screws perfectly every time. I love the fact that it doesn't have 15 different modes and all that.

Hmmm, I had thought that the XTD19 was the US equivalent of the TD172, not the 171 though I think they're mostly just a different button layout from one another, so perhaps it's meaningless anyway. From that second test, it almost looks like it might not be the US equivalent of either of them, but a third different driver, or it's just testing (or production variance, who knows). I also have the TD173, it might not perform much differently in the day to day than the 172 that I also have, but I really like that tool a lot, that light is just really useful.
