I couldn't ever do zone cleaning, because I had too much clutter- you can't clean if there is clutter!
Now I've started to declutter... I'm on the road to house and mind clearance.

Get in the Fly Lady habit by decluttering in the zone for each week.

  • @girlswantpockets

In the beginning instead of doing the zone cleaning, I did zone decluttering. It was hard for me to deep clean when I have so much stuff in the way. I did 2 zones a month in the beginning instead of one zone a week for decluttering. Now I'm able to get into the detailed cleaning lists after 10 bags of trash and 30 boxes of donations leaving my home.

This my biggest struggle. We live with and care for my parents (pay all utilities, half the mortgage, buy all the household food and goods etc) they are mid 70s and will not part with anything that "might be needed someday" so I'm moving stuff and struggling to deep clean constantly. If I try to get rid of things my mom freaks out and will tell me to move out, but obviously they would starve and be stuck here with no social life or utilities without us. Sigh, I know she needs to feel like it's her home and she has "control over her environment" but it's so exhausting.

@@tishyj53 I'm not sure what your storage situation looks like but would a wall of clear totes in a garage help your mother? You'd have all the back up items sorted by room or season so she feels like you're not tossing out her stuff but you also have the house free for things that are used daily/weekly/monthly. I hope you find a happy spot for both of you as that's a rough situation.

I'm currently re reading sink reflections(fly lady's first book) and she says in the beginning if your house is really out of hand, you start with decluttering instead of the zone cleaning. I love the flexibility and adaptability of this system. I stated this past year and I like the structure which keeps me on track. Yes, there have been weeks where no zone cleaning happens, but that's ok. It's important to give yourself grace and let the system work for you instead of being a slave to the system.

I'm a not so secret slob, but I'm trying to change that. I have lupus, fibromyalgia, and several other auto immune illnesses, so I stay so tired and I hurt all the time. I must admit I've let my house go, but I'm retaking it. I've been working on my kitchen for a week or so and I've decluttered most of the cabinets, wiped down the microwave and the stove, swept and mopped, and today I started on my pantry. I'm feeling accomplished, but I can only work for about 30 minutes to an hour at a time.

I found the Flylady system years and years ago. Honestly, it confused me so much that after trying it numerous times I always gave up. It wasn't until I found your channel, hearing you explain it so simply, that I finally was able to make the system work for MY needs. I can't thank you enough for that. My house used to be so messy that it was causing tension in myself as well as my marriage. Using your tools has transformed me as a person. I love having a neat & tidy (but lived in) home and hubby likes it too. Some weeks I "fall of the wagon" but thanks to you, I realize we all do at times and I just start at the beginning and get right back on. Thank you so much for all your tools, support and your positive attitude. Thanks to you I'm now a reformed slob - lol.

it's thanks to this channel of the secret slob I started working with the fly lady system, on the website of the fly lady itself I felt totally lost in all the details. I am still finding my way around it. It's not that I lived before in a total mess but more an idea of finding ways to make it easier. I love the morning and evening routines. One big win for me is, doing my dishes every evening (by hand, don't have a dishwasher) and putting them away in morning, and every morning a quick bathroom clean. And another game changer for me was buying a cordless stick vacuum cleaner and one of those floor mops with a build-in water-soap reservoir. Where I could postpone this task forever vacuuming and mopping, I now almost enjoy doing it.

Frog stuff, though minimal mom definitely discusses it, is originally a Mark Twain reference to his quote, “If the first thing you do in the morning is eat a live frog, you can go through the rest of the day knowing the worst is behind you.” Brian Tracy adapted it to a productivity system called Eat That Frog. Your frog is your worst task, and you should do it first thing in the morning. The rest of the day is a breeze.

This is great! I get stuck with keeping on top of all the different focus areas. Would love to see your schedule for a week in cal. format where u allocate time for each task (morning and evening routine, daily focus, zone cleaning, decluttering, and most importantly where do u fit in meal planning, tidying up after your kids and doing the actual cooking). I find the last three really hard to juggle with a 2 and 3 year old who need a lot of attention especially as the day draws to a close.

I personally don’t use the “daily focus” portion of the system. I just do those types of things as needed - the extra daily focuses on top of all the routines really seemed overwhelming to me. I just focus on a morning and evening routine as priority, and the weekly home blessing. Zone cleaning I’m not so strict with, and I don’t do it daily, but I do try to do it at least a couple times a week. It’s not set in stone you just make it work for you❤️

I'm brand new to your channel and I was wondering if you have a video on how to organize a kid's room and tips on decluttering it. I have three sons and two of them share a very small room. It can get very overwhelming because there isn't much room for storage and they are "not so secret slobs"! hahaha, It's one of those spaces that is in desperate need of a revamp, but just walking in to wake them up each morning overwhelms me. Thank you so much for all the videos you do, they are so informative and have really helped me a lot!

I don’t.. yet! Thank you for the suggestion. I do not keep toys in their rooms almost at all (just stuffies) and that helps a lot!

Watch The Minimal Mom. She has 4 kids and they're happy with less stuff. Sounds like the key for you. Maybe each boy only needs 10 outfits, only 10 toys, etc. How many can they wear or play with at once? Teaching them young about contentment is important and less stuff is the key to being tidy. Teach them now so they're never overwhelmed like you are. Get them involved with the process of donating their clothes when they outgrow them so there's less to wash, fold, store, etc. Teach family to not give toys as gifts so you're intentional about how much they have and when toys come in that they love, they can donate toys they're too old for or don't love. Separate emotions from things. It can be hard to live without the first "this" or something you remember from baby-hood, but you, and they, need to separate the emotion from it for a healthier life or they'll be 30 and overwhelmed with a garage or basement full of boxes of "crap" they've been moving every time they relocate. Less stuff should be taught early. It comes from parents. It will solve your overwhelm as well as prevent it from them getting there. Incorporate a "giving" 15 minutes once a week into your routine where you sit on the floor with a kid and decide on what you can bless someone else with because they enjoyed it, but it's time to go live in someone else's house. This might be clothes they don't wear or a toy they don't love or don't play with anymore. Keep them involved and after you've done it weekly with each kid for a while, then you can start recognizing and acknowledging with them how there's more space to play and easier to get dressed in the morning and being tidy is easier. You can connect the act and existence of less stuff to the feelings of less overwhelm and the benefits. Don't skip this step, where you praise their ongoing work of blessing others with the positive feeling and life change it has on them (and you). This is where they learn less stuff is so good and they carry it with them. If you don't connect the dots, the light bulb moment won't happen. But I stress, wait for weeks to make them stop and observe the benefits of less stuff in their room. They need to see a big change. This is where it makes sense to take a couple pictures now, when you go in their room to wake them and feel overwhelmed. Then weeks later, when there's really a difference that less stuff makes on their room, you can sit quietly with them and reflect on the difference and they will actually feel it. Don't do this step too soon. The Minimal Mom stresses the importance of "managing less inventory" in every room of your house. It doesn't mean you have nothing but it means your kitchen drawers aren't overflowing and you don't dread folding laundry and putting it away because it all fits. Sorry to carry on and on but I had to learn this as an adult and I think teaching kids this is valuable. You shouldn't look at it as being an overwhelming project you have to do, but instead, a loving project you can teach your kids that they can take with them for life (like math class!) and they'll never experience this overwhelm you have right now. To them it's normal, so change their normal over the next few months.
